Feather-legged Flies Genus Trichopoda Trichopoda is a genus of tachinid flies, often referred to as feather-legged or hairy-legged flies. These small, brightly colored flies are typically found on flowers, where they feed on nectar. Their halteres are covered with yellow scales, and their hind legs feature a fringe of flattened hairs. The larvae of Trichopoda are parasitoids of true bugs in the order Hemiptera, targeting stink bugs in the family Pentatomidae and leaf-footed and squash bugs in the family Coreidae. English below! Moth Monday! Een tijdje geleden zag ik een raar beestje met sterk gereduceerde vleugels. Bij nadere inspectie bleek het een mot te zijn, en dat de vleugels helemaal niet gereduceerd waren. De mot was pas net uit de pop gekomen en naar een plekje gekropen om de vleugels op te gaan pompen. En dat deed de mot ook. Het allereerste begin heb ik net gemist met de camera. Maar op de eerste foto zie je dat de vleugels nog niet compleet uitgevouwen zijn. Op de tweede foto had de mot de vleugels opgetild om ze te laten drogen. Op de derde foto werden de vleugels in de typische rusthouding gevouwen, waarbij je heel goed de camouflage van de mot kunt opmerken. Er waren vele dorre blaadjes, maar deze had precies te goede kleur voor de vleugels van de mot! Nu de mot "af" was, kon ik pas ontdekken dat het waarschijnlijk ging om de zuidelijke stofuil. English: a while ago I spotted a strange insect with reduced wings. Upon close inspection it turned out to be a moth, but not with reduced wings. The moth had just emerged from its pupa and was getting ready to fold out the wings. I missed the very first part because I had to go get my camera. So in the first picture you can see the wings have not fully folded out. In the second picture, the moth had straightened the wings to dry. Then, in the third picture, the wings were folded again into the typical resting state of the moth, where you can see that it is well camouflaged against the dry leaf. I noticed that there were many different leaves with different shades of brown, but this one matched the moth perfectly! Tree bark. More complicated than you might think. Fast growing tree bark, like in oak trees, helps trees quickly recover from damage, such as a fallen branch. But often forms wrinkles that are perfect for burrowing insects to hide in and potentially damage the tree. Slow growing tree bark, like in beech trees, forms a smoother surface to reduce potentially harmful insect numbers, but is slower to heal injuries, allowing bacteria to get in and cause disease. Check out that looooooong tongue! I caught this Rhingia campestris hoverfly grooming itself last weekend and showing off the extended mouthparts it keeps hidden away in that cute little snout 😆. This particular adaptation allows it to reach in to feed on tubular flowers like the white dead nettle in picture 3. Larvae of Rhingia campestris develop in cow pats making them a fairly common find in hedgerows bordering pastoral fields at this time of year. Monkey slug caterpillar under the weather. Compared to the jolly creature I posted recently, this one looks terrible. Of course, being dead doesn't help much, but what happened? (2) If we look closely, separating the caterpillar from the leaf surface is a whitish layer. (3) Prying away the insect, we see the leaf venation impressed upon the whitish surface. (4) Upon teasing apart this layer, the exposed parallel-sided cells suggest cocoons. (5) a further look into the caterpillar carcass reveals literally nothing, an empty shell. 🐜 Matabele ants have been observed using a form of “antibiotic” protection for their wounded members. After returning from termite raids, some Matabele ants may have injuries that could become infected. In response to this, other ants in the colony have been observed licking the wounds of their injured comrades. This behavior is thought to apply a form of antifungal secretion that acts as a natural antibiotic, helping to prevent infections and improve the chances of the wounded ant’s recovery. Familia: Oxyopidae Especie: Peucetia viridans (Araña lince verde) Para identificar especies arácnidas un primer paso es conocer la disposición y cantidad de ojos. La mayoría tienen 8, pero hay excepciones de 6, 4 y 2. En este caso dudaba entre la araña lince y la araña cangrejo, ya que el presente ejemplar tiene sus patas posteriores muy largas, característica física de las cangrejo. Sin embargo la disposición de los ojos en forma de diamante me confirma que se trata de una araña lince. Las arañas cangrejo, también de 8 ojos, tienen 6 en fila y dos arriba. Pensamientos y descubrimientos de un novato en la materia, si alguien tiene información más exacta sobre este apasionante tema, estaré muy agradecido de recibirla. Orden: Coleóptera (Escarabajos) Familia: Elateridae Especie: Monocrepidius falli (?) Uno de cada tres insectos que existen en la actualidad es un escarabajo. Perteneciente a los elatéridos, esta familia se caracteriza por su inusual mecanismo de “click”: una pequeña espina en el protórax (el primero de los tres segmentos del tórax) puede generar un chasquido cuando entra en una pequeña muesca del mesotórax (el segundo de los tres segmentos del tórax). Esta acción genera un violento “click” que lanza al insecto por los aires, evitando ser cazado. La especie no la tengo identificada, sospecho que puede ser “Monocrepidius falli”, aunque la mayoría de registros son de Norte América.. cosa que me despista un poco. Familia: Lycosidae Genus: Lycosa A este género (Lycosa) se le suele llamar las “verdaderas tarántulas”, si bien no están cercanamente relacionadas con las comúnmente llamadas “tarántulas” en América (la popular araña peluda del Amazonas). Este género estuvo asociado con el tarantismo, una dudosa aflicción cuyos síntomas incluían temblores, sudores fríos y fiebre alta, que (supuestamente) solo se podía curar con la danza tradicional de la tarantela. Importante aclarar que no se conoce ninguna fundamentación científica de ese mito; El veneno de las arañas Lycosa no es dañino. La palabra “tarántula” procede del italiano “tarantola” y alude a la ciudad italiana Tarento en la región de Apulia, en cuyo clima árido meditrerráneo abunda este género. Na relação polinizador - flor, existe uma troca de favores: néctar para o polinizado, mas as vezes o polinizador tira néctar sem polinizar, rasgando a flor perto da base. Hand carved chalk - interpretation of the Comet moth or Madagascan moon moth. I've carved this moth with 13 chalk pieces over a span of 3 days. Around one million insect species have been described so far in the world. However, apart from a few details about their morphology and part of their distribution, we know little about most of them. More than 80% of Madagascan species are endemic, meaning they live nowhere else in the world. 🌼The newly published paper ‘Sustained mangrove reproduction despite major turnover in pollinator community composition at expanding range edge’ in @annalsofbotany by Mayda Nathan and Daniel Gruner is now #free for a limited time. 2- 🐝🦋 If pollen generation is hampered by a lack of pollinators or if abiotic stresses influence the allocation of resources to reproduction, reproduction at the range edge can be limiting. 3- In this study, researchers looked at plant-pollinator interactions that may have an effect on the reproductive of the black mangrove, Avicennia germinans, which is moving north in coastal Florida, USA. 4-They assessed the pollen loads of the most prevalent insect species and the amount of pollen received by A. germinans stigmas, and recorded the number of insects visiting A. germinans populations in proximity to the geographic range edge. 5-Despite an 84% decline in floral visits by insects in the northernmost sites, pollen receipt remained high for Avicennia germinans. Interestingly, the assemblage of flower-visiting insects changed along the latitudinal gradient. Large-bodied bees and hoverflies became more common in the northern sites. 6-Northern populations of A. germinans showed elevated flower production and higher per capita reproductive output at the range edge. 7-Surprisingly, the mean propagule mass in the northern populations was 18% larger than in the southernmost ones. 🌿This study reveals the resilience and adaptability of A. germinans populations at range limits, enabling them to rapidly expand their mangrove cover in coastal Florida. 📗Read the article 👉 link in bio #AoBpapers #pollinators #insectecology #mangroves
