📍 @galmisdale_bay_cafe_and_bar first vegan lasagne of the season from the wonderful Galmisdale in Eigg! They have a fantastic winter bar snack menu & a wonderful lunch menu (just incase anyone ever wants to visit Eigg, hint hint) and I am so delighted that the evening meal menu is back on the scene! The vegan lasagne is unbelievably delicious & the chips are ridiculous - would recommend both whole heartedly. We are pleased to announce that Lizzie Henson, the recipient of the 2023 Lyon & Turnbull Graduate Showcase Award, will be spending one week at Sweeney’s Bothy this spring! Lizzie Henson is a recent graduate from Edinburgh College of Art where she studied BA Painting. She is now based in York, UK where she was born and grew up. Lyon & Turnbull’s Graduate Showcase Award was launched in 2017 to provide an opportunity for a graduate to further their practice during the crucial twelve month period after leaving university. My first tiny exhibition is here! I am so happy about it ❤️ We installed it last week at the outside wall of our studio at Elandstraat 200 in The Hague together with my lovely colleague and pattern designer Eveline @studiowonderroom Both of my risoprints are inspired by the stunning landscapes of the west coast of Scotland, the views from a little cabin on the Isle of Eigg, and the wild rock doves flying above the sea to meet the sunset. These rare birds are the wild ancestors of domestic and feral pigeons. It was so nice to see them in their natural habitat in the purest nature far away from the cities…. To create the atmospheric scene I have played textures and colours and managed to come up with these lovely shades of warm vibrant blue by mixing fluorescent pink and blue ink. I hope that these art prints bring a bit of peace and quiet to the passerby on this busy street and a perhaps moment of reconnection with nature. I opened my eyes this morning and saw bright blue sky through the hatch above my bed. My morning ritual is writing my thoughts down in a journal with a huge cup of tea to wake up body and soul (Thankyou to the friends who gifted me the notebook and Christmas mug). When I saw this new day so shiny and quiet I jumped up to see if the boat was facing the right way at mooring. Yes! The sun is streaming into the cockpit, sheltered from the light but chilly breeze. Perfect morning for writing and tea drinking on deck. The FIRST of 2024. I have this morning to prepare Selkie for sailing. There won’t be much wind but maybe enough for a helping hand to the engine. The tide starts in my favour a bit after 12. Catch the rising tide going north around Ardnamurchan heading to Eigg. I am looking for that magic number, 3.9, the number of metres of water I need to see on the tidal graph to get Selkie onto her home mooring. It will take me about 4 hours go get from Tobermory to Eigg - so much quicker that’s going ferry, road, ferry, road. There is a pier clean going on at @isleofeigg sprucing up for the season. The Easter ceilidh is next weekend and @eiggguiding has officially opened their doors. What a day for people want to go out on a paddle board or guided up the Sgurr and for those wanting to rent bikes and kayaks @eiggadventures is the place. We can finally tell you about a brilliant adventure we had last autumn. On a beautiful flat-calm day, we took a @calmacferries boat from Mallaig to the #IsleofEigg, for the @scottishwildlifetrust. They had asked us to record a #podcast episode showcasing Eigg as an example of community-led conservation. Eigg is in the Inner Hebrides, and has been community-owned since a groundbreaking buy-out in June 1997. The brief was to create an immersive listen complete with the sounds of sea, birdsong and island life - to tell the story of the buyout, as well as the benefits to both people and wildlife that it has helped to unlock. We met brilliant folk on this trip, all of whom were incredibly generous with their time. Chief among these were guide Norah Barnes, and Camille Dressler and Maggie Fyffe, who have gone down in history as instrumental in the 1997 buyout (pics 2, 3 and 4). The finished episode is part of the Trust's new National Lottery-funded community stories pages - designed to give people inspiration and tools to take local action to protect nature. It was such a privilege to be part of this project. We hope to get to go back to Eigg soon. It's an incredible place. We've added a link to the Trust's community pages to the linktree in our bio.
