I'm very blessed to have spent the weekend eating and spoiling Nephew #1. We ate our way through Syracuse NY and Niagara Falls. The Tangs love to eat! I'm glad he had time in between his studying and homework. I definitely remember college was hard...lots of studying! Then I took a detour to Cooperstown to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame on my way down to Valley Forge where I met up with my coworkers and ate some more. So much history to see at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum! Got there just in time to watch a 17-min film that really gets everyone emotional with interviews and footage from baseball's finest and then 2 floors of baseball history (lots of artifacts from pivotal and epic events) and finally the Hall of Fame. Had a super fun time exploring Niagara Falls with Nephew #1. I haven't been back since I was a kid and he has never been. We drove 2.5 hours through the slushy upstate NY snow. When we got there, the clouds covered the sky so the background of the falls were muted, but as the day passed, the sky cleared up and we ziplined and explored some more. Niagara Falls is such a natural beauty even in the winter. Took a tour on the grounds where the Battle of Franklin occurred on November 30, 1864, one of the deadliest battles during the Civil War. The Battle of Franklin took place over 5 hours, from 4pm to 9pm, 10,000 casualties. The Carton House served as a field hospital, right on the Eastern Flank (now a park called Battle Field park with a walking trail with markers describing the battle). The Carter House was right in the battle where many of the houses still have bullet holes in the walls. The Lotz House was across the street from the Carter House and also suffered from great damages from the battle. This tour really helps me appreciate how we now have the freedoms that we do. [9 Sept to 16 Sept 2022] A whirlwind tour of the riverside towns along the Main, Rhine, and Moselle rivers in Germany. These quaint towns were all charming with churches and castles. It was very interesting to hear/read their history. Commonly, these towns have seen various kingdoms take over and then destroyed by the French, Germans or the Americans. Also just caught the day many artists came together to repaint the John Lennon Wall (the Czechs seem divided on this action). On the tours, the tour guides often point out the impacts of communism on their country. It's been a few decades since and the sting is still raw to many. I can understand. Lake Tahoe Basin National Forest hikes with @liltwetee & @jenc.32 : Fallen Leaf Lake, Logan Shoals Vista Point (Lake Tahoe), and Cave Rock. Fallen Leaf is a small lake walkable from our campsite that had lots of hiking trails around the scenic lake. It's definitely a hidden gem in the Tahoe Basin area. When we got to the Logan Shoals Vista Point, we decided to blaze trail down the hill to an unmarked trail to find breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe. Finally, the cave rock has such rich history of the Washoe tribe. Cruise to Santa Cruz Island (Channel Islands National Park) for a hike with @liltwetee and @jenc.32 . The ride was rough 🤮 heading there and we were so tired on the ride back, we napped most of the way except for whale, dolphin, and sea lion sightings. Quick day trip to St-Jean-de-Luz in France with @meggiep83 - walked around the Old Town and dined at Kaiku (Michelin *) for lunch. The duck and pumpkin were my favorites! The pumpkin quinoa was perfect in taste and texture profiles. The duck was eyes-rolled-back delicious. The way they prepared it with the figs really brings out the duck's natural flavor. Arrived in San Sebastian (Spanish food heaven) with @meggiep83 and our Airbnb super host, Clara, reserved us a dinner reservation in Old Town. Conclusion: we had foie gras (hola, my long lost delicious friend)! Everything was delicious!!! The cod fish taco was scrumptious. The hake in the creamy sauce was melt in your mouth flaky goodness (the Spanish olive oil kicks up the flavor intensity a notch). Also, the grilled octopus was tender and the flavor profile was just perfect with the pepper sauce, onion and potato. I love that they lay out the pintxos (Basque Country's term for tapas) on the bar for you to choose. Overall a very successful day! . . .
