My dad and I recently did the Paramount studio tour. I got us VIP tickets so we could get the full experience. Not only were we treated to a delicious breakfast, we explored the archives where Paramount keeps many of their original 35mm film canisters. My dad and I were able to go through their backlots, soundstages, prop houses, and get a comprehensive history lesson about one of the oldest studios in the world. Adolph Zukor, Jesse Lasky, and Samuel Goldwyn created something incredible that continues to entertain and inspire people to this day. I highly recommend this tour to everyone. If you choose to take the tour, do the VIP as there’s nothing else like it. #paramount #paramountstudios #paramountpictures #adolphzukor #jesselasky #samuelgoldwyn #tcm #vip #archive #soundstage #vintage #oldhollywood #hollywood #cinema #film #movie #classiccinema #classichollywood #classicfilm #classicmovie #goldenage #goldenageofhollywood #goldenagecinema #goldenagefilm #props

LASKY DRIVE (Beverly Hills) Jesse L. Lasky (1880-1958) was one of the first Hollywood bigwigs to get a street named after him, yet it wasn’t for his movies but for his role in the Beverly Hills Speedway, located here from 1920 until 1924. (Several streets were named for Speedway officers after the track was torn down. See Durant Drive for more.) The San Francisco-born Lasky got into motion pictures after a stint in vaudeville. In 1913-1914, he produced the first feature film ever shot in Hollywood proper: The Squaw Man. (The barn where it was shot is now on Highland as the Hollywood Heritage Museum.) It was not just a first for Lasky but for his soon-to-be-famous partners: brother-in-law Samuel Goldwyn and director Cecil B. DeMille. Lasky later cofounded Paramount Pictures. While his career would suffer several setbacks, and he lost nearly everything in the 1929 stock market crash, Lasky ultimately produced over 600 films. Picture 1: Jesse Lasky, date unknown. Picture 2: Sales ad for The Squaw Man. Note that Samuel Goldwyn is listed under his previous name: Samuel Goldfish. #jesselasky #jessellasky #beverlyhills #laskydrive

--- #vivienleigh #loqueelvientosellevo #gonewiththewind #escarlataohara #scarlettohara #clarkgable #oliviadehavilland #rhettbutler #melaniehamilton #hattiemcdaniel #mammy #victorfleming #georgecukor #samwood #lesliehoward #laguardiadelcardenal #metrogoldwynmayer #davidoselznick #drama #dramasureño #dramaromance #anecdotasdecine #anecdotas #curiosidades #curiosidadesdecine #romance #jesselasky #myronoselznick #laurenceolivier #hollywood

Merry Christmas from the heart of Hollywood! Mom and I had a great time visiting the Hollywood Heritage Museum today! Located by the Hollywood Bowl the museum is housed in the restored Lasky-DeMille Barn - which is the birthplace of “Hollywood’s First Major Film Company Studio”! The museum features archival photographs from the silent movie days of motion picture production, movie props, historic documents and other movie related memorabilia. If you’re a film buff of early Hollywood films put this museum on your “must see” list! We loved it!! #hollywoodheritagemuseum #laskydemillebarn #hollywoodsfirstmajorfilmcompanystudio #hollywoodhistory #cecilbdemille #jesselasky #paramountpictures #heartofhollywood @hollywood_heritage

Paramount Pictures Corporation founded this day 111 years ago ( 8 May 1912) American film and television production and distribution company and the main namesake division of Paramount Global (formerly ViacomCBS). It is the fifth-oldest film studio in the world, the second-oldest film studio in the United States (behind Universal Pictures), and the sole member of the "Big Five" film studios located within the city limits of Los Angeles. In 1912 Famous Players Film Company is founded by film producer Adolph Zukor. The next year, Lasky Feature Play Company is founded by Jesse Lasky. In 1914, Paramount Pictures is founded as a film distributor by W. W. Hodkinson, and in 1916, Famous Players & Lasky merge as Famous Players-Lasky and acquire Paramount. In 1916, Adolph Zukor put 24 actors and actresses under contract and honored each with a star on the logo. In 1967, the number of stars was reduced to 22 and their hidden meaning was dropped. In 2014, Paramount Pictures became the first major Hollywood studio to distribute all of its films in digital form only.  The company's headquarters and studios are located at 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, California. Paramount Pictures is a member of the Motion Picture Association (MPA). Our museum building itself is an important artifact of the history of movie-making in Hollywood because the barn structure was rented in 1913 to make the first feature shot in Hollywood. Jesse Lasky and Cecil B. DeMille, the men who made this historic film were also Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences founders in 1927. The Academy founding committee was comprised of white men, but the invincible film industry veteran Mary Pickford made the cut. Her husband, actor Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. served as the first president for the first two years. He’s in the center with the jazzy two-tone shoes. Producer Lasky and director DeMille are pictured as older men in the second photo at a premiere. As we know the Academy has made recent attempts to diversify their membership in all possible ways. #filmhistory #hollywoodhistory #jesselasky #cecilbdemille

Adolph Zukor, węgierski ojciec założyciel Hollywood, który uczynił kino popularnym i dochodowym, urodził się 150 lat temu. Osierocony w młodym wieku, przybył do Ameryki w wieku 15 lat z dwudziestoma pięcioma dolarami w rękawie i bez znajomości języka. Jego gwiazda zdobi Hollywood Walk of Fame. Adolph Zukor zmarł w Los Angeles w 1976 roku, w wieku 103 lat. #adolphzukor #zukor #paramountpictures #paramountstudios #losangeles #warszawa #hungary #hungary🇭🇺 #instytutliszta #magyar #magyarország #jesselasky #silentfilm #filmbusiness #silentfilms #pioneer #entertainment #polanegri #polanegriofficial #boss #ernstlubitsch #gloriaswanson #silentfilmstars

Hollywood’s first art director is the architect behind a local masterpiece: Las Orquideas villas on Orchid Avenue, just east of the Magic Castle. Wilfred Buckland—who worked extensively with Cecil B. DeMille and Jesse Lasky—built the Spanish Colonial Revival complex, a recreation of his favorite hillside village in Andalusia, in 1928. The nine units feature double-volume living rooms, balcony dining rooms, arched entryways, stained glass, and rooftop terraces. The previous year, Buckland concluded his prolific film career. Lauded as “the founder of Hollywood Cinema Art,” he’s credited with the introduction of artificial lighting (which allowed for interior shoots) and architectural sets. His crowning achievement: the epic castle in 1922’s Robin Hood starring Douglas Fairbanks. Buckland, his actress-wife Veda, and their son Billy lived at 1905 Orchid for several years before moving around the corner to a rented home on Pinehurst. Veda’s 1941 death devastated Billy: He suffered a nervous breakdown and was in and out of institutions. As 80-year-old Buckland feared his own impending death, he couldn’t bear the thought of leaving Billy behind, alone and helpless in the world. So on July 18, 1946, he shot his 36-year-old son in the head as he slept, then turned the gun on himself. “I am taking Billy with me,” Buckland explained in his suicide note. Despite success, his estate was worth $2,078 ($31,725 in 2023), most of which he left to Cecil’s brother William DeMille. Las Orquideas—a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural monument that was fully restored in 2019—is currently on the market … for $13 million.

📣 TONIGHT 7PM PST: Forbidden Paradise | Los Angeles Restoration Premiere The only American film that German-born director Ernst Lubitsch made with Polish-born star Pola Negri, a fellow European transplant, Forbidden Paradise is a sumptuous costume comedy about the seductions and infidelities of Empress Catherine the Great (Negri) as she tries to ward off a revolution at her doorstep. Staged against expressive, detail-laden sets designed by Hans Dreier (subsequent 22-time Oscar nominee for Art Direction), Forbidden Passage is lavishly madcap. Newly restored by the Museum of Modern Art from two incomplete nitrate prints and preservation negatives, this is the most comprehensive version of Lubitsch’s film in a century. Note by Academy Museum Senior Director of Film Programs Bernardo Rondeau. DIRECTED BY: Ernst Lubitsch. WRITTEN BY: Agnes Christine Johnston, Hans Kraly. WITH: Pola Negri, Rod La Rocque, Adolphe Menjou. 1924. 73 min. USA. Tinted and Toned. English intertitles. DCP. Restored by The Museum of Modern Art and The Film Foundation, with funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation. Orchestral score compiled and edited by Gillian B. Doctor to the stars Hans Schiff built a shining example of International Style in Whitley Heights—by architect and interior designer Paul Laszlo. In 1939, a decade after Whitley’s Mediterranean restrictions ended, German-born Schiff hired the Hungarian émigré to design his family’s modern home on Whitley Terrace, characterized by glass brick and a “moat of air” separating the residence from the street. The 3,000 square feet is split between two floors: garage and three bedrooms at street level, with the maid’s quarters, kitchen, dining room, living room, playroom, and study below. Capitalizing on the city view of Hollywood, all important rooms face south—and Laszlo added a cantilevered terrace for indoor-outdoor living. Schiff, an internist and cardiologist at Cedars of Lebanon, was the personal physician to some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Hedy Lamarr and Eddie Fisher. Filmmakers were also high-profile patients: Schiff assisted on studio boss Jack L. Warner’s gallbladder surgery and officially declared the deaths of Jesse Lasky (1952) and Cecil B. DeMille (1959), two pioneers who made the first feature film, 1914’s The Squaw Man. When actress Anne Sterling spiraled into mushroom-induced hysteria, she called on Dr. Schiff. So did Wynn Rocamora, agent to Gloria Swanson and Maureen O’Sullivan, who overdosed on pills at his Outpost Estates home—and left a note for Schiff to rule his suicide a heart attack. The doctor made house calls, but also opened his own doors: In 1943, the Whitley Heights residence was the wedding venue for Marlene Dietrich’s go-to director Josef von Sternberg and his 21-year-old secretary. In his spare time, Schiff practiced the healing arts as chief percussionist for the LA Doctors Symphony Orchestra. After he passed in 1962, while on vacation with his wife Alice—head of pediatrics at Mount Sinai—his legacy continued through USC’s Dr. Hans Schiff Memorial Chamber Music Scholarship Fund.

In March, I wrote about Burma Shave as I was at my friend Melissa Herron’s (@melucky_13) Estate Sale where she gifted me one of her father’s Original Bottles;  and I said I’d be chatting more about him on his Birthday. . I’ll say again Bob Herron is a name you may not recognize even if you’ve seen him a bunch … and still not known it.  Why?  Because he was one of THE great Stuntmen – StuntACTORS – who sadly passed in October ‘21.  I was lucky to meet him and he indeed deserves his own Post; because I love to champion the lesser known Actors, Pictures, Stories; and we’ve not yet focused on ANY Stuntperson. . Born in 1924, Bob grew up with his father in Hawaii, his mother remarrying Ace Hudkins, the famous Horse & Rig Supplier (The Hudkins Ranch – The Old Lasky Ranch – also a filming location that’s now Forest Lawn Hollywood).  After serving in The Navy in WW2, Bob wrangled for Hudkins, quickly learning there was better money falling off a horse than tacking it up.  He got his SAG Card in 1949. . Over 70 Years, it’s tough to cull his run so I’ll hit some highlights, mostly to underline it was SEVENTY YEARS.  And as a STUNTMAN (including as a Founding Member of The Stuntmen’s Association). . ‘Along The Great Divide’ (for Lone Pine Fans, indeed filmed there), ‘The Red Badge Of Courage’ (he did a bunch of Audie Murphys), ‘River Of No Return,’ ‘The Court Jester,’ ‘The Ten Commandments,’ ‘Rio Bravo,’ ‘Spartacus,’ ‘The Great Race,’ a ton of TV including ‘Wild Wild West’ (doubling Ross Martin throughout), ‘The Wild Bunch,’ ‘Shaft,’ ‘American Graffiti,’ ‘Blazing Saddles,’ ‘Rocky,’ ‘Poltergeist,’ ‘The Goonies,’ ‘Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure,’ ‘Three Amigos!,’ ‘The Untouchables,’ ‘Dick Tracy,’ ‘Batman Returns,’ ‘L.A. Confidential’ and ‘Lethal Weapon 4’ (then for ANOTHER decade, his last job at Age 90). . I’ll single-out ‘Star Trek’ because he had a number of connections there, first doubling Jeffrey Hunter in “The Cage,” then playing a Crew Member in “Charlie X,” and most notably playing Kahless The Unforgettable in “The Savage Curtain.” . Talk about an unsung hero in front of and behind the camera, Bob Herron made so many Stars we love look Cool … while keeping them Alive. .

📣 Milestone Films, collaborating with KINO LORBER, will be releasing Paramount’s epic 1923 silent film THE SPANISH DANCER across U.S. theatres later this year. This film was directed by the great Herbert Brenon, starring Pola Negri and Antonio Moreno, and cinematography by James Wong Howe. “When Pola Negri arrived in the United States in 1922 after a spectacular career in German cinema, the Polish star was the first European actress to be signed to a contract by a major Hollywood studio. Already famous for the films she made with director Ernst Lubitsch, she was glamorous, exotic, the very epitome of a vamp. But as movie audiences soon found out, Negri’s range went far beyond the temptress stereotype. Before Garbo and Dietrich, there was Negri.” — Margarita Landazuri for the San Francisco Silent Film Festival FACT: Originally commissioned for Rudolph Valentino, contractual disputes between him and the newly created Paramount Studios saw him suspended and the role was given to Moreno. The Spanish Dancer was restored by the EYE Film Institute, Netherlands. Naturally, we will keep you posted of further — exciting — developments. https://milestonefilms.com #paramount #paramountpictures #castofthousands #southerncalifornia #calabasas #adolphzukor #jesselasky #silentfilm #filmniemy #filmmuet #antoniomoreno #adolphmenjou #cinematography #jameswonghowe #silentfilmstar #silentfilmdirector #stummfilm #filmdistribution #kinolorber #classicfilms #herbertbrenon #polanegriofficial #polanegri #eyefilmmuseum

The Hillview/Harlan Residences - Despite regulations and the best efforts of preservationists, parts of old Hollywood have disappeared in recent years. Thankfully that’s not case for the big pink apartment building at 6533 Hollywood Boulevard. Movie moguls (and brothers-in-law) Jesse Lasky and Samuel Goldwyn opened the Hillview Apartments in 1918 to cater to actors and other movie people. “No dogs, no actors” was the mantra among landlords in early Hollywood as actors were viewed as dead beats and unruly tenants. The Hillview changed all of that. Notable residents in the early years included silent stars Viola Dana, Mae Busch, a young Clara Bow, as well as comedian Oliver Hardy (Photo 8, clockwise from upper left). The building has been faithfully renovated in stages beginning in 2003 (Photo 3)… (Contemporary photos 3/29/2022, 2003 renovation photo from hollywoodpartnership.com, interior photo from westsiderentals.com)… #theharlanresidences #hillviewapartments #hollywoodboulevard #hollywoodblvd #hollywoodhistory #hollywoodheritage #historichollywood #hollywoodlandmark #losangeleslandmark #lalandmark #lalandmarks #oldhollywood #oldhollywoodglamour #vintagehollywood #vintagelosangeles #vintagela #goldenageofhollywood #tinseltown #jesselasky #samuelgoldwyn #violadana #maebusch #oliverhardy #clarabow #oldmoviestars #historicpreservation #historicpreservationmatters #saveoldhollywood #turnerclassicmovies #hollywood

In honor of Mother’s Day we’re spotlighting Beatrice DeMille who raised filmmakers Cecil and William DeMille as a widow. As a woman it wasn’t easy in her day to provide for and educate children on her own. She continued the work of she and her husband as agents for playwrights and opened a girls school for a time. But the achievement near and dear to our hearts is that she introduced Cecil to Jesse Lasky - which led to them leasing the Barn that now houses our museum- to make the first full length motion picture in Hollywood. The Squaw Man was made over 100 years ago and from that, grew the motion picture capital of the world. #happymothersday #cecilbdemille #hollywoodheritage #strongwomen #mothersday #laskydemillebarn #silentfilm #hollywoodhistory #beatricedemille #jesselasky Read more about Beatrice here: https://travsd.wordpress.com/2019/01/30/beatrice-demille-mother-of-movies/amp/

Jane Winton was first discovered by Paramount founders Adolph Zukor and Jesse Lasky. She began her career as a dancer on stage with the Ziegfeld Follies. When she moved to California, Winton began a film career that lasted over a decade. She appeared in films like Tomorrow’s Love, Why Girls Go Back Home, The Patsy, Hell’s Angels, and Don Juan. Don Juan was a @wbpictures (Warner Bros) film and billed as the first film made using the then new Vitaphone system. This machine synchronized sound with motion pictures. Jane Winton, alongside lead stars John Barrymore and Mary Astor, helped launch the era of sound, forever changing Hollywood. In 1933, Winton made her operatic debut in a production of Pagliacci, playing the role of Nedda. In 1951, she published a novel called, “Park Avenue Doctor”, which was followed by “Passion Is the Gale.” All in all, Jane Winton had several pretty successful careers. From appearing in a film that started the beginning of sound films to transitioning into both opera and writing, Winton was truly a woman of many talents. #janewinton #womenshistorymonth #ziegfeldfollies #adolphzukor #jesselasky #tomorrowslove #whygirlsgobackhome #thepatsy #hellsangels #donjuan #johnbarrymore #maryastor #opera #writer #novel #vintage #oldhollywood #hollywood #cinema #film #movies #classiccinema #classichollywood #classicfilm #classicmovies #goldenage #goldenageofhollywood #goldenagecinema #goldenagefilm

The Day I Met Nellie Oleson, Pt. 1: This is a picture of the historic Lasky-DeMille Barn, a close-up of a photo of #silentfilm icon #LouiseBrooks painting the barn in 1927, and a pic of the window she was near today. The structure started life as a horse barn in 1895 on a citrus ranch at the intersection of #SelmaAvenue and #VineStreet (the Trader Joe’s near Amoeba Music currently sits on one of the corners). It is probably the oldest surviving #moviestudio building in existence, as #CecilBDeMille and #JesseLasky produced #TheSquawMan here in 1914. From this unassuming little barn, the mighty #ParamountPictures eventually arose. DeMille moved the #barn to the Melrose lot and it housed the #ParamountStudios gym until 1979. Author Christopher Long will give a special Art Deco-centric presentation on designer Jock Peters on Jan. 29 at 3pm PT on Zoom. Peters came to Los Angeles in 1922 and worked Famous Players-Lasky for a time. In late 1924 through early 1925, Peters spent most of his time working on the sets for a major science fiction film, The City of The Future (1st photo), being produced by Famous Players-Lasky (later renamed Paramount). The higher-ups at the studio abandoned the project when they caught wind of Fritz Lang working on Metropolis, which had begun around the same time in Berlin. In 1926 Jock Peters designed the sets for Mars, another science fiction film. The film was based on Edgar Rice Burroughs book A Princess of Mars, published in 1917. The film was never produced. 📸2) “The Judgement” 1924, the film this was sketched for is unknown. 📸 3) “The Palace” 1923, film unknown. 📸 4) Jock Peters around the time he came to Los Angeles. Happy Birthday, Cary Grant. . While he may need no introduction, there are always fun bits to share. He was born Archibald Alec Leach in Horfield, Bristol, England in 1904 (and did you know he himself mentions Archie Leach in ‘His Girl Friday?’). His childhood was Dickens-level Horrible and – at age 10 – he found solace in (get this) Acrobatics with which we started Touring including to The U.S. (and, legend has it, it was during this time that Jesse Lasky spotted him and he played shuffleboard with Douglas Fairbanks; either / both “launching” him). Acrobatics led to Vaudeville which led to Broadway which led to ‘Singapore Sue,’ a 1931 Short. His first Movie Hit was ‘33’s ‘She Done Him Wrong’ with Mae West (who said she “discovered” him). . Early notes of his Acting aren’t exactly great except – and this appears to be unanimous from Co-Workers to Biographers – his CHARM was there right from the beginning. I say his Acting is (became?) good, often great (he makes ‘His Girl Friday’ look easy), with a career spanning 30 Years with four Golden Globe, a BAFTA and two Oscar Nominations (his Oscar Win Honorary). A brief Hit List? ‘Topper,’ ‘Bringing Up Baby,’ ‘Gunga Din,’ ‘My Favorite Wife,’ ‘The Philadelphia Story,’ ‘Arsenic And Old Lace’ ‘Destination Tokyo,’ ‘The Bachelor And The Bobby-Soxer,’ ‘The Bishop’s Wife,’ ‘Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House,’ ‘I Was A Male War Bride,’ ‘An Affair To Remember,’ ‘Operation Petticoat’ and ‘Charade.’ . Of course, he’s as famous just for his four with Alfred Hitchcock: ‘Suspicion,’ ‘Notorious,’ ‘To Catch A Thief’ and ‘North By Northwest’ (from which you can see the enormous, beautiful Mt. Rushmore Backdrop in Los Angeles’ @academymuseum). . He retired from Pictures in ’66 to spend time with his daughter (with Dyan Cannon), Jennifer. He’d sit on some Boards – notably Fabergé and MGM – but he was effectively … well, Cary Grant. He famously said, “Everybody wants to be Cary Grant. I want to be Cary Grant.” And, when he passed in 1986, The New York Times wrote, “He was not supposed to die. He was supposed to stick around, our perpetual touchstone of charm and elegance and romance and youth.” . I say he still is. .

The Hollywood Heritage Museum museum is open 11am - 3pm Saturday & Sunday. Stop in for a docent tour like @katiemckinna did! Have we mentioned how much we love hearing about your visits to Jesse & C.B.’s barn? Our building is a Cultural Heritage Monument or HCM. That means that citizens went to the city and applied for this status and the city agreed that the building met the criteria of significance and should be designated. The process can take months, but you get the idea. The building is associated with the early movie industry and some key figures who helped to shape it. You can read more on our plaque. The Hollywood Heritage Museum has reopened! We exhibit artifacts from early Hollywood that relate to the story of our building, the “barn” used for production by Jesse Lasky and Cecil B. DeMille. Here is a chair used in the 1915 film THE CHEAT, directed by DeMille. The film stars Fannie Ward, Sessie Hayakawa and Jack Dean. You’ll have to visit the museum to learn about the other DeMille items in case. Paramount’s "The Spanish Dancer" (1923) is based on the popular novel Don César de Bazan by Vincente Blasco-Ibañez, and Pola Negri’s first American feature with the studio spending over two million dollars on lavish sets, extras as well as exquisite costumes. Directed by Herbert Brenon, the film features a cast of top tier talent such as Wallace Berry, Antonio Moreno and Kathlyn Williams under the guidance of future award-winning cinematographer, James Wong Howe. Pola plays Maritana, a gypsy dancer and fortune teller—she is electric! "FACTS from SIX BOX OFFICES: At the Rivoli, New York, “The Spanish Dancer,” broke “Manslaughter’s record” on the opening day, and has been the best draw on Broadway for two weeks…. At Grauman’s Rialto, Los Angeles, the picture has played to absolute capacity for two weeks…" In 2010, the EYE Filmmuseum compared six original international prints of "The Spanish Dancer” and determined that the full length version of this production doesn’t exit, which according to the American Film Institute should be nine reels long with a total running time of around ninety minutes. Based on the original continuity script, courtesy of the Margaret Herrick Library (AMPAS), EYE reconstructed the film to its original length using their own tinted nitrate print elements as the foundation of the project, plus the combination of three different prints from external resources to carry out a full length restoration. One Year, Two Brothers, Two Films, a Dog....and a Man in a Kilt. A new story from our archives! Cecil B. DeMille's older brother William met immediate success as a playwright with his first play, "Strongheart" in 1906. A tale of a native American, played by Robert Edeson who is studying law at college but also becomes a football hero on campus, it pleased audiences greatly and after its New York success, toured the country. At the very same time Cecil, Jesse Lasky and Sam Goldwyn were preparing their "Squaw Man" film, "Strongheart" was being filmed by theatre empresarios Klaw and Erlanger. Antonio Moreno would play the Native American hero of William DeMille's play on the screen and would be assisted by Lionel Barrymore. First released in March of 1914, a month after "The Squaw Man", the movie was not a success. An actor dog appeared on the scene in 1921, so DeMille changed the title to BRAVEHEART when he filmed the story himself in 1925. One of the greatest directors in cinema history was Cecil B. DeMille. He was part of the second generation of filmmakers who would succeed the likes of Georges Melies, the Lumiere Brothers and Thomas Edison. DeMille began in 1900 as a stage actor before switching to writing and directing. He worked with producer Jesse Lasky to direct his first film, The Squaw Man. This film not only was DeMille’s first feature, it was also the first feature film shot in Hollywood. The success of the film put Hollywood on the map as the capital of making motion pictures. Cecil B. DeMille would make a string of highly profitable films that made Paramount one of the first major studios that is still a major player today. His films focused on historical and biblical figures. Some of his biggest hits were The King of Kings, The Sign of the Cross, Cleopatra and Samson and Delilah. Incredibly, he would not win his first Oscar until his film The Greatest Show on Earth was released in 1952. The last film he directed is also his most famous, The Ten Commandments. It featured actors Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner. Adjusted for inflation, this film is the seventh highest grossing film of all time. DeMille is also the recipient of the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award and the inspiration for the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award for which he was also its first recipient. His most famous and memorable appearance on screen was in Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard in which he shares an unforgettable scene with Gloria Swanson, whom he made a star years prior. DeMille was a one of a kind director, whom was one of the few to combine grandeur with commercial success. #cecilbdemille #cecilbdemilleaward #irvinggthalbergmemorialaward #paramount #jesselasky #thesquawman #georgesmelies #thelumierebrothers #thomasedison #tcm #hollywood #cinema #film #thekingofkings #thesignofthecross #cleopatra #samsonanddelilah #thegreatestshowonearth #thetencommandments #oscar #sunsetboulevard #gloriaswanson #billywilder #classiccinema #classichollywood #classicfilm #goldenage #goldenageofhollywood #goldenagecinema #goldenagefilm

Continuing the segment where I look through the @turnerclassicmovies schedule and pick out A Little Guy I think you’ll enjoy (always airing The Next Day just to give you the head’s up). What do I mean by “A Little Guy?” Please see my write-up – The Essentials? – Link in Bio. . This time it’s the World War I Drama ‘Sergeant York.’ . @gary_cooper_official stars in the true story of Alvin York, one of the most decorated Soldiers in World War I. For overtaking a German Machine Gun Nest, including capturing 132 Men, he was awarded The Medal Of Honor and became A National Hero. . Born in Tennessee and raised in a Poor Blacksmith Family, he Drank and Fought heavily. With an Epiphany, he became Staunchly Religious. When drafted, he claimed Conscientious Objector, being persuaded his Religion could coincide with Military Service, which he took to heart. After The War, he returned to Tennessee where he championed Education; in fact, the money he made from Our Movie Today financed an Interdenominational Bible School. He tried enlisting again in WWII but his age and health wouldn’t allow it, so – still Famous – he toured Training Camps and raised money for The Red Cross. As staunch a Democrat, he continued Activism for the rest of his life. . The legend that York insisted Gary Cooper play him comes from Producer Jesse Lasky writing Mr. Cooper, pleading he accept the role, signing York’s Name. One can say it worked out, with ‘Sergeant York’ becoming the Highest Grossing Film of 1941 and Mr. Cooper winning the well-deserved Academy Award (the Picture also won for Editing). Based on York’s Diary and Scripted by a Slew of Writers including Howard Koch and John Huston, Howard Hawks directs the Character Drama with the right amounts of Action and Heart. . Co-Starring Joan Leslie (who, in sixteen months, had her three biggest hits: ‘High Sierra,’ this, and ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’), Walter Brennan, Ward Bond, George Tobias, Dickie Moore (who we just saw in ‘Out Of The Past’) and the wholly underrated Margaret Wycherly (“Mother York” here, “Ma” in ‘White Heat’), here’s Gary Cooper in one of his best: ‘Sergeant York.’ . I hope you enjoy. .

#igliterario #igdelivros #bookaddict #bookphotography #booklover #bookshelf #instalivros #bookstagram #lovereading #lovebooks #amoler #lovebooks #leiaumlivro #livros #booksaremylife #books #revenge #abcstudios #jesselasky #dicadeserie #dicadelivro #emilythorne

Lasky was producing the 1941 film "Sergeant York" Lasky can be seen in the photo top left with York. The film starred actor Gary Cooper who was given the Best Actor ® award for the role Cooper is seen with Lasky bottom left, and York himself, bottom right.
