🌱 The Tobacco Wives by Adele Myers 🚬 15-year old Maddie is dropped off with her aunt, an in-demand seamstress living in the heart of tobacco country - Bright Leaf, North Carolina. While learning the social customs of the area and assisting her aunt sew gowns for the “tobacco wives”, Marie comes across disturbing information about the effect of tobacco on women. What now? This was really good! I’d describe it as a historical fiction/coming-of-age novel. I learned a lot about tobacco and its history, and really liked the women’s rights components of the story. The plot moved along at a good pace and I liked the characters (both the sympathetic MC and the villains). Overall a great read, one that I think would be a great one for teen readers, as well. 👍👍 Rating: Highly Recommended

First time in NSW, Fina lived at Louisa's house at Hastings, and there was how she met Cash, Louisa's boy, a boy who was growing up too quickly because of his circumstances. With her Safe Haven Enterprise Visa, Fina is allowed to visit Port Camden detention centre and help those detainees until she decides to speak to the journalist, and her privilege is revoked Lucky, a private investigator, is sent to Port Camden to further investigate the suicide of a boy who's a detainee and a suspicious death of the centre's officer. Lucky's investigation will intertwine with Fina's future in Australia. It's an easy read book but with a difficult topic of asylum seekers detention VS the policies around it in Australia, plus trigger warning of suicide. The author also amazingly puts a mystery in the book that makes it more unputdownable. ✨ b o o k • r e v i e w ✨ Book 46 of 2024 The Betrayal of Anne Frank: A Cold Case Investigation 2022 This book was incredible. It's been decades since I read book The Diary of Anne Frank (yikes) and although I had forgotten the details, I could never remember my impression from the book. It's one that will stay with me forever. There were 2 investigations into who leaked the hideaway of the Franks and their companions. One took place a few years post WWI and then again in the early 60s. The first investigation was pretty ineffective, partially because Amsterdam's police force was decimated in the aftermath of WWII because all of the suspected Nazi sympathizers were fired and there was a dearth of trained policemen left. Because both investigations were unsatisfactory and because some suspects were no longer living by the second investigation, a cold case team was put together in the late 2010s. The investigators were rockstars and they had the help of computer programmers who designed a programmed to link all of the major players and suspects in these stories. Investigators decided that three main factors could have contributed to the exposure of the Franks' hideout: carelessness, chance, and/or betrayal. This book perfectly combined WWII history of Amsterdam with mini biographies of the major players. The saddest part of the book was reading about the Jewish betrayal of their own in the hopes of buying their lives, when in reality, that wasn't even on the table. This book was a heartbreaking but a necessary read. Let me just say, I was in the biggest slump of my life and I read this in 2 days not even (if I didn’t have work or school it would’ve been sooner)!! Should’ve known Wattpad would have my back 😂 I am obsessed with this story!! From the serious conversations to the dialogue that had me laughing out loud! I didn’t know I would be obsessed with this book. From Renie to Roux to Edmond to Jason to Ludovic. I loved each character, it was refreshing and easy to read! I was so engrossed in the story, I just had to know what was happening!! Some parts I guessed but I was never completely right! She twisted and turned to the point I actually gasped by the end!! I am already reading the second book as we speak 😂 I don’t have the third yet and I’m actually upset I don’t, I want all of it!! This is a perfect, quick fantasy romance! It was wonderful! Are you a short story collections fan? I didn’t give much thought to short story collections until recently - now I find myself gravitating towards them more and more. Especially as my attention became a bit shorter and when I was in the mood to pick something up and put it down. This is why I jumped at the chance to join @thewritereads tour for Takeout Sushi by Christopher Green. Takeout Sushi is a collection of 17 illustrated short stories set mostly in contemporary Japan that explore feelings of belonging, displacement, and the strangeness of everyday human interaction. Takeout Sushi is was a mix of stories that I really liked, coupled with a few that weren’t for me. But it is a great example of the variety that I love in short story collections. As a reader who is particularly invested in endings - my biggest struggles were down to personal preference. There were times that I just wanted a bit more from the story itself. And maybe a bit more consistency to the overarching theme. Overall I enjoyed this collection and am still thinking about some of the stories! Aquí se encuentran con Sara, con una vida aburrida que necesita un hobby para desconectar; Catherine, la más mayor que vuelve a coser y a reencontrarse con su juventud; Margarita, una mexicana que está lejos de su país y se siente sola; Laura, una madre que necesita un respiro y Marta, las más joven. Todas ellas forman una familia muy bonita. 🥑El libro tiene una trama tierna, con una pluma delicada y elegante. Es un libro que contiene lo necesario para ser devorado de forma rápida ya que te sientes una más en el grupo tan bonito que tienen. 🥑Es una historia que deja con un buen sabor de boca, puesto que a pesar de que los personajes atraviesan dificultades y las afrontan desde la serenidad y con buenas vibras y una energía positiva, haciendo ver que los problemas son más llevaderos si los compartes con las personas adecuadas. 🥑Citar que me ha resultado muy curioso que lo que une a esas mujeres sea la costura, una actividad que creo que con el tiempo ha perdido valor y aprecio. Gracias a este libro y a la autora he viajado a mi infancia, en aquella época mi madre cosía, y se pasaba la tarde entre hilvanes, patrones e hilos. 🥑Por último y como reflexión final, creo que todos deberíamos tener un hobby que nos sirva de terapia.
