Sometimes you see a book and in an instant you know--without even knowing how you know--that this book is special. Seed, co-edited by teacher, seeker, and spiritual guru Ram Dass (nee Richard Alpert), is just such a book. It was published in 1973 by Harmony Books. It is a unique work of spirituality and inclusiveness, consisting of pages of text in green ink on brown paper, followed by photographs--four to a page--on perforated card stock, followed by Tarot cards, also four to a page and once again printed in green ink on brown paper. The book also comes with a *large* psychedelic/spiritual poster, which has a small tear along one of the folds but is otherwise in very good shape (and vibrantly beautiful). The book is in almost perfect condition. A bit of the front cover is scraped off (see photo) and the binding is broken in one place due to the weight of the card stock pages. The least expensive copy of Seed that I found was $120...and was missing the back half of the book. The most expensive copy was $900. Yikes! Just finished reading ‘Be here now’ - a very interesting book which covers Harvard professor Dr Richard Alperts experience with psychedelics and his transformation into Baba Ram Dass in India, and contains a very interesting book ‘from Bindu to Ojas’ which I must say is difficult to read and doesn’t conform to a usual format - it’s more like a collection of posters, artworks, sayings and short stories. The final chapter ‘a cookbook for a sacred life- a manual for conscious being’ was a lot for me personally, but I can understand and respect the Buddhist beliefs. Years ago at the spiritually eclectic Lama Foundation in northern New Mexico, I was fortunate to be able to do the month-long practice of Ramadan, which is considered a time of great blessing. It was hard and beautiful. Hearing the call to prayer coming across the crisp pre-dawn morning in the high mountains, joining together in prayer, having a meal together before dawn, was very special and completely different from what I was accustomed to do. Working in the middle of the day, without food and water, was challenging. My community work at the time was on a construction site in the hot sun. My boss, a fellow Lama member, quickly realized that I’d be better off helping somewhere else in the community. I still remember his kindness and wisdom in transferring me to a different job. If you are in Ramadan, how you experience mood and food may be completely different than at any other time of the year. Yet some of the supports for balance could be the same. Taking deep breaths with a longer exhale when you find yourself accelerating in mood, working with tone and chant to ground, making healthy connections with loved ones as you move through each day, can be part of the healing. A lot of people have been asking about my hermitage experience in New Mexico, what it is, what it’s like, why I go every year, etc. so here’s some pics and vid to get a sense of the kind of rustic isolation involved. No electricity, no wifi, no cell phone or computer, no running water, no human contact. This is the fifth time I’ve done this and every time there are new struggles and epiphanies. It’s hard to describe the level of complete silence up there and how time creeps at such an incredibly slow pace. The days are long but the nights are even longer as you sleep in bursts a couple hours at a time to keep the fire going until the sun returns in the morning. It’s like a thousand small deaths and rebirths. Profound loneliness and existential angst coupled with an overwhelming feeling of awe and peace and oneness with the universe. It’s just you and your mind - no running from your thoughts, your baggage, your anxieties and fears. Nothing to do but work out those mental knots, meditate, read, journal, watch the clouds drifting by, make tea, cut firewood, build a fire, make some soup… you get the idea. The @lamafoundation website probably has the best description of the space and it’s purpose: The hermitage experience exists in the pause between the in-breath and the out-breath. It is our transport to other dimensions; to our deeper and truer selves; the loving containers that embrace us as we step from our ordinary lives into sacred silence and solitude with the prayerful support of the community. As this eclipse approaches I’ve been reflecting on all that has happened since the last eclipse in April. It has been quite sobering and humbling to say the least. In the best and most challenging of ways. The day after the last eclipse I fled the Hummingbird lands as the fires were literally roaring over the ridge onto the land. I was graciously received at the Lama Foundation as a climate refugee, where I spent most of the summer until they closed for the season in late September. Then went back to my mom’s in Oklahoma to prepare to move there only to find out that’s not happening till spring. I am now without a home, back at home in Taos. So much has happened within and around me. My world has been uprooted again and again and again… and again. There is a deep journey happening around home, placita or home place as Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes calls it. In the language of Tibetan Buddhism, finding true refuge in the groundlessness. Something deeper is arising in me as life offers me the opportunity to release old patterns, face my demons, and be more present with myself, others, and the world than I ever have been before. Within it all there has been consistent journeying with grief. And the paradox of gratitude being the medicine that resources me enough for grief to naturally move through. There has been and continues to be so much to be grateful for. I find myself in awe. The wisdom of the body, elements, and earth guide me. The deeper intelligence beyond concept. I’m learning to trust. In a deep unraveling. Juicy and confronting. Finding out who I am and deciding how I am going to show up to it all. So that’s a vague update on my life. Because how much can you really fit into an insta post? And these pics are a small representation of the infinitesimal moments of beauty in the mosaic of my life. Yes, yes, yes it’s that season again in the Sangre de Cristos of Northern New Mexico 🍄🌲🍄 In the name of foraging I’ve had two legit mushroom adventures, and been generously gifted half a bag of these beauties. I so badly want to share about the foraging adventures! Adventure Mikyö! Rain and hail! Wettest of wet feet! Yoni shaped caves! Aspen forests! Sacred mushroom groves! Singing heart prayers with the Mountain! The floopiest of floopy legs! 😂 Yet what feels most potent is the medicine. The curiosity. How long have these mushrooms existed? Where did they come from? How are they woven into so many cultures throughout human history? The fact that they are literally poison or medicine depending on how you prepare them blows my mind. The poison, ibotenic acid, turns into muscimol as you dry or cook them. Or as they are digested by another being and passed through the urinary track. Some theories name these as the Soma elixir spoken of in ancient Vedic texts that assist in enlightenment. I have deep respect for strong medicines such as these. I don’t normally mess with them. These magical beings called me. They have consistently led me off trail to find their secret spots. Last year I dried some after my first encounter and subsequent foraging. I forgot I had them until I was in a really dark and stuck place in early winter. They started whispering to me. My friend had told me they could be used as winter tonic. I basically took a micro dose and made them into a tea with wild rose hips, ghee, and honey. Yummmm. They gave me the capacity to be with the depths of darkness whilst maintaining connection to love, joy, and compassion. They aided the cultivation of my awareness at I time when I was deeply struggling. I feel so honored to get to play and explore with them. To sing them mantras as I prepare them. To take these holy New Mexico mountain lands into my body through them. I know we’ve only scratched the surface. Resting into reverence with them. The beauty I’m blessed with wanted to be shared. This is what I see when I walk out of the door to my room at Lama Foundation. Then when I walk past the building I am greeted with amazing view of Northern New Mexico. Gardens of flowers and oceans of mountains. Deep blue skies of clouds interspersed with afternoons of rolling thunders, lightning, and rains. Dry, rough earth turned sponge. Sacred springs in aspen coves, blossoming mushrooms keeping guard. Lands of enchantment. These lands are energetically thriving even under conditions of drought and climate change. I believe this is because the original peoples of these lands have been here for 15,000 years. There is power here that opens the soul and brings deep healing. In my short time here I’ve watched people go through healing and transformation. I continue to do so myself. With this Aquarian full moon I reflect on what I want for all beings. And it’s this. The beauty. The beauty. The BEAUTY! Lands that are in deep communion with the humans that tend and inhabit them. Bodies unraveling trauma and deeply healing. This is the Lama Foundation in Questa, NM. Just north of Taos. A large community gathering place where ecstatic dances are held regularly. People gather, sing and dance for Peace. There's a huge outdoor kitchen. Lots of little campsites, tiny homes and off-grid structures. It's a bit of a hike up a mountain to get there. Leave your car far behind. There's a meditation room built like the Native American kiva, fire pits surrounded by seating areas, a beautiful temple room with well-stocked metaphysical library attached, greenhouse, garden, outdoor kitchen, solar power, compositing toilets and pee screens. Qigong Invitation ✨🌕✨ Here’s some picture moments from fire evacuee life. It’s deeply challenging being displaced, and so beautiful to be closer to Taos Mtn and on the beautiful Lama Foundation/Tewa lands. As I write this I’m aware of the fires moving through Angel Fire, coming closer to Taos. Over 236,000 acres burned and still going. There are Hummingbird community members spending all their time putting out spot fires, protecting our home and sacred lands. It’s heart breaking for me in so many ways, excruciating and beautiful. And what else is there to do in these liminal spaces we face, when so many things are out of our control? For me there’s nothing to do but be with it all. Come back to my connection to the earth. Come home to this soft animal body. Bring balance and harmony in any way that I can. Connect with Essence, that within me which is indestructible even as all else is stripped away. Qigong really supports me in all of this. I’m gonna be leading a free 6 Healing Sounds and Inner Smile Qigong this Saturday at 10:30 am pst as part of Rev Fa Jun’s Alchemical Immersion. Back to basics. @babaramdass Ten years it's been since I woke up Randomly I took 5meo dmt and that flicked alot of lights on, and alot of ego death ensued. Then my ex gave me this book, I read it and the depth became magnanimous all encompassing awareness. I haven't stopped since and if it wasn't for ram dass, I just don't know what influence would have taken my squishy pineal for a ride at that time. Today I received my third copy, I opened the first page of the bindu tojas part of the book, "Be Here Now" and this message hit right in the heart, of course.
