Toy Rotation 🧸🌈 I used to really enjoy doing Barney's toy rotations, so it was full of both happy memories and sadness setting one up for Amelia. Having a focus around play can both encourage different age-appropriate skills and prevent over-stimulation (for both parent and baby!) It also prevents toys from getting 'old' or 'boring' as they are only out for a focused amount of time and then cycled- so like new each time! Amelia is coming out of leap 5 'relationships' according to #thewonderweeks so I chose the toys around this theme. We are officially in the thick of the 5-6 month “Mama Just Hold Me” stage. The one where baby NEEDS to be attached to me at all times and is not happy with anything else. The one where Dad isn’t enough, sleep isn’t the most predictable, and being attached to the boob every hour or two is his ideal scenario 😅 It’s HARD, it exhausting, in my opinion months 4-6ish are the hardest of the first year. But man this last baby, it hits different with them. The hard doesn’t seem so permanent or taxing because I know how quickly these stages pass in the grand scheme of things. I remember getting so frustrated and anxious during this time with the girls. (This stage with Rylin nearly brought me to tears often with how strong willed she is.) With the girls, I was always worried I couldn’t get anything done, thinking about all the things I should be doing, wondering if my baby will ever be less needy, if I will ever do something with two hands again… counting down the days until we were past this “Leap”. This time is different. This time I know better. I know soon he’ll be okay with me putting him down for longer than 5 minutes again. Soon he won’t need my cuddles that extra time (or two) in the night, soon he’ll be a dirty toddler running a muck right alongside his sisters only coming over to ask for a snack. So for now, I want to be attached to his hip just as much as he wants to be attached to mine. ⭐️If you’ve never heard of developmental leaps, they are fussy periods that babies and children go through when they are going through a big change in their development. ⭐️Although there has not been a wide amount of research done on the developmental leaps, some parents find them pretty accurate. Some parents find it helpful to know it is just a fussy period, and it will end soon, so enjoy using the app. Some parents find themselves constantly stressing about up coming leaps & prefer not to follow the leaps, so it’s really down to the individual. ⭐️During these periods your little one may want to be held more, they may have shorter naps or appear to fight bedtime and nap times. Feeding may also be difficult and you may experience your baby being very fussy when feeding. Elimination Communication (EC) journey is not linear but more an up and down type of deal. It’s a skill to be learned just like with everything else. There are times when the baby is going through leaps, teething, sickness or is in the middle of learning a new skill such as sitting, pulling up, crawling, or walking. It’s normal and expected. A relaxed approach to baby pottying works better than trying to get it perfect every time 💕 Your baby 💫will respond better💫if they’re not under pressure to perform every time. Are baby ‘leaps’ and ‘weeks’ apps useful or not? More random thoughts from me this evening, but the past 3 days have been the most challenging days we’ve had with Flora since she was a newborn! Literally overnight she has stopped having long naps, cries pretty much all day unless she’s being held, is fussy when drinking milk and screams (and *screams*) whilst I cuddle her to sleep. Luckily she is still sleeping well at night (for now🥴). Where has our happy little easy-going baby gone?! I downloaded a well-known App before I had Flora (I won’t name it just in case I get in trouble) which predicts baby’s ‘sunshine’ and ‘stormy’ weeks and attributes the ‘stormy’ phases to ‘leaps’ and rapid development. I have never really looked at the App at all until today, when I clicked on it out of interest to see if this new-phase-of-Flora was attributed to anything in particular… Apparently we are in a certain ‘stormy leap’ caused by rapid mental change (you and me both Flora😂) and development in her understanding of space and relationships. Who knew 🤷🏼♀️ but it got me thinking about whether knowing this was helpful or not? Whilst it’s kind of reassuring to know we’re not imagining the sudden change in her, I do also feel that if we’re constantly looking for problems/reasons/explanations then we also tend to find them. I find it makes me a bit on edge to see what may be ahead - when in fact many babies breeze through these leaps with no obvious evidence of them, thus causing parents to worry or stress for no real reason. Is it labelling normal child development as a problem? Is it stopping us just ‘going with the flow’ and just simply being present with our babies here and now? I’m not sure I have the real answers to these questions just yet and of course every single parent / baby is different. What works for some won’t work for others. 𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁 - 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗔𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝟴 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀?!?! 😱 Just when you thought you'd gotten over the 4 month regression and all the leaps in between, you're now hit with another one! Traditionally called 'the 8 month sleep regression' - I like to refer to it as the 8-10 month regression, as it is normal for babies to hit this as late as 10 months. 𝘼 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙥 𝙤𝙣 𝙨𝙡𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨: your baby's sleeping pattern changes temporarily due to developmental changes and the impact these have on their brain. Sleep goes out the window, with short naps, difficult settling, fighting sleep, waking more often & restlessness. Regressions can affect feeding - some babies want to feed more than usual or can seem really fussy! At 8-10 months, there's a combination of significant mental and physical developments - we've got leap 5 & 6 going on, so your baby is now understanding the concept of object permanence - when something leaves (including you) it's gone. So we've got separation anxiety setting in here, along with the fact baby is learning to sit up/crawl/cruise around furniture... and maybe even walk (some babies do this early ~10 months!). A few tips to help: ✨ TIP 1: During the day, practice their new skills (e.g. learning to sit, crawl, & pulling themselves up). If they are getting stuck in a certain position, like standing up, show them how to get out of it. ✨ TIP 2: If your baby is sitting up/standing and not able to get back down, show them a few times how to lay down in their cot. This also shows them that this is what we do for sleep time. ✨ TIP 3: With your baby now understanding you're gone, you may want to implement my parent presence technique where you slowly work your way out of the room (I have a post on this - will share to my stories for quick reference!) ✨ TIP 4: Stick to routine as much as you can but make changes to accommodate bub's needs as required - e.g. more presence & reassurance at bedtime. Happy Saturday friends! Roman has recently started his 5th leap. Usually I don’t really pay attention to leaps but he’s definitely in this one 😅 Sometimes I find myself feeling overwhelmed, overstimulated and frustrated that he doesn’t want to be put down or nap on his own or only wants me. But then I remember something; I am his comfort. I am so THANKFUL to be his comfort. Sometimes I get caught up in what people say he’s supposed to be doing and I forget that it’s biologically normal for him to be this way. I’ve been trying so hard to stop putting expectations on a 5 month old just because society says I should. I genuinely believe every family should figure out what works best for them, without the fear of judgement (as long as everyone is safe of course). When you manage to catch your shy kitty being his sweet self 🥺😽👶 It’s first thing in the morning so it’s dark and he’s nuzzling at both of us after I open the door. Eleanor has been really unsettled the last week. Leap 5 has been the worst, the previous leaps we've barely noticed behavioural changes but this one has been something else, she's been going from sad to laughing to crying to smiling again all within 3 seconds. Bedtime has also become challenging with it taking over an hour to settle her where previously its been 5-10mins, it's been really hard to understand what she's needed but today we found out why. She's been working on a new skill and decided to show us, she sat unaided 💖 she's previously sat but wobbled and collapsed into her toes but today she just chilled and ate her pack of wipes 😂 it's exhausting for us as parents when babies learn new things but it must be 10x harder for them, like everything this too will pass and we will have our smiley happy girl back with new skills to show off. Open and honest motherhood - we were talking about social media at a baby group yesterday and how it's easy to fall for the illusion that everyone has it together. I mean, it happens in real life too, you look around at these parent and kid groups and everyone seems to have it. Whatever the holy grail of 'it' actually is. I took this photo yesterday morning, Rosie was being cute and I'd just got ready with my best mate, concealer. I bet it looks like I have my shit together and that breastfeeding my baby is the easiest thing ever. I actually had barely any sleep, same again last night, and all I can talk about is sleep and I worry that people just don't care about all the sleep chat but I talk about sleep anyway. Sleepy sleep sleep. Feeding has been easier this time round but it still has hurdles - she's currently very distracted and pops off all the time and kicks her legs like mad. Super fun feeding in the car when she bounces off the door! We are having a tough week but I know it'll pass. Babies go through so many stages and it could be all change in a few days. As a second timer I try to follow my intuition more but it's still hard in the depths of sleep deprivation. I want to reassure you so you know what to expect and when 🤗 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒑𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒑𝒖𝒓𝒕𝒔? These are key periods of mental and physical growth for your baby following a fairly predictable timeline. Leaps are when babies go through intense periods of mental/physical development - gaining new skills such as smiling, sitting, cooing or laughing. Growth spurts are when your baby grows more rapidly or intensely than usual. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒔 𝒅𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔? Both leaps & growth spurts are accompanied by "stormy periods" (disrupted sleep, clingy etc) - these can last from days-weeks, depending on what stage they're at. Babies also often change feeding habits - seeming like they're on and off the breast day and night. For breastfeeding Mamas, this can leave you questioning your supply as it seems like baby is insatiable yet keeps pulling off 🤷🏽♀️ It can be a mentally and physically demanding time for you too Mama but if this behaviour is occurring around the time of a leap/growth spurt, it's likely this is the cause and NOT your supply. 𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒅𝒐 𝒃𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒅𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔? Both comfort and the instinct to increase your supply naturally to meet their growth. With frequent feeding and stimulation, your baby is telling your breasts they need more 🤱 ✨Important for breastfeeding Mamas ✨ Some Mamas are concerned about their supply at these times and wonder if they should give a bottle. Please don't doubt yourself or think you need to give up breastfeeding. Persevere if you can, as if you introduce extra milk, it may interrupt the process that you and your baby are working on together. I always suggest connecting with other Mamas whether in real life, or in online communities (including here!) as you'll find babies of around the same age are often going through similar. 👶 LEAP 5: RELATIONSHIPS . . Yesterday Miss L saw a 🌈 rainbow just before bed and I think it was the first time she actually understood what she was looking at from reading our 'Weather' book from our sensory kit. When she woke this morning, she pointed out another rainbow in one of her colouring books which was another first. . With Mr B on his last day (supposedly) of leap 5, 'Relationships' and Miss L's new knowledge of rainbows, I thought today we would make him a rainbow 🌈 sensory tray to help him practise some new skills he has developed during this leap. . . Although I have not enjoyed the new skill of Mr B's of understanding the distance between him and myself 😆 (can not walk out of a room without him loosing it 🥴) I have enjoyed watching him experiment with the relationship between objects (inside, underneath, on top of, beside).
