Still feeling quite reflective today (but a lot less exhausted thanks to a much more regenerative deep sleep last night 🥰).. A sad but beautiful image of this last resting place for a beautiful butterfly on this late season dahlia bloom. Feeling this change of season more than ever. Had some really lovely connection with my honesty cart customers this morning as I loaded up one of our last big harvests of seconds out there.. we’ll have bunches out there intermittently over the next few weeks as we cut the last blooms of the season that aren’t needed for our breeding program seed. Also, we’ve made the definite decision that we won’t do an online tuber sale this year, and we have also decided we won’t be selling the large amounts of seed we did last year either (so don’t forget to save your own - I promise it’s not that hard and if you start with some cultivars you love and just cut back anything you don’t, then you’ll be on your way to some beautiful new seedlings that you have bred yourself! 🥰🥰🥰) My complete 3-month blackout on social media will start soon too, and I’ll post just before I uninstall everything. I’ll miss you all terribly of course! As I do truly love the connections I have here with my dahlia-growing community! Around the age of 25 because we have endured all the levels of school being both primary and secondary followed by going to university to achieve an degree that will not guarantee a job in your trained field at the end of it but one thing you can be guaranteed about is, you will be in a whole load of university fee debts without absolutely no results to show for it! With this hard hitting reality blow, we decide to settle for the first job opportunity that appears as vacant and then that’s when the viciously repetitive cycle of working for a living being work, eat, sleep and repeat begins and seems never ending! We may not get actually buried until the age of 75, but if we really look deeply into the eyes of our fellow human beings, we will be haunted to discover that too many of us have died inside long before, our soul, spirit and creativity destroyed by the conditioning of society and the government. There is a definite crisp coolness to the air here in the mornings now and a certainty that the season is shifting. Everything is letting out a gentle exhalation of relief that the hottest harshest days have passed and that the ferocity of those summer storms are gone for another year. With Autumn Equinox this coming week, day-length sensitive dahlias will be triggered away from feeder root development and into winter storage mode and they’ll be shoring up the food source in their tubers, and laying down that corky suberin layer just under the skin of the tubers which will toughen them up to help them store well. This is the reason it’s best not to be tempted to dig your tubers too early. But there are still a few weeks of blooms to go yet, so let’s enjoy them while they are here! We end our florist orders at the end of this month because our attention then shifts to hybridisation and collecting seed for next year’s breeding patch (and all going well we’ll have lots of packs to sell again this winter too 😊💕🌸) I will miss this lovely morning routine of harvesting. We cut blooms 7 days a week because it’s a workflow that suits us and the plants best, and it’s a great way to start the day (even rain, hail or shine 🤪). But working with nature means working with the seasons, and so this harvest routine will pass and shift and there is joy in that too 😊 Surrender, acceptance and letting go are lessons that seem to come back over and over when we are growers. I think this year with my breeding work I’m learning the “letting go” part a lot better. This third year seedling in the photo was one of my absolute favourites when I first discovered it. I still loved it last year but realised it had limitations and faults and rarely did a stem make it into a florist order.. but I was blinded by how pretty the colour was and that slight twist to the petals, so I grew out a whole row this season but it was worse if anything and not even consistent enough to release as a garden cultivar. So I’m letting go. It’s being rehomed with a florist friend who will enjoy it in her garden (always easier to let go if you know it will still happily exist somewhere). 💕🌸

Life lately has been focusing on what I have now. Each person reading this can relate to getting caught up in what could be different, what you should have done, “shoulda, woulda,coulda” mentality. This is what my life has looked like lately, you might look at these photos and think seems pretty simplistic. That is the whole point, to absorb and focus on what you are doing now instead of how it could have been different. I’ve recently been more aware that I tend to be more of a planner but looking back at this month the times I logged that mattered are the times that weren’t planned. The unexpected and unplanned… ✨intentional dinner with an ace that was after a work day ✨cousins engagement gathering that was the day of the Super Bowl ✨not being able to sleep and catching the sunrise ✨recording a podcast with an ace who just wrote her first book ✨angel numbers that I wasn’t aware of ✨pizza night with a side of learning more about me ✨moment of your goddaughter being herself ✨time with my parents and dogs that I don’t get as often since I don’t live home ✨tea with a side of laughter with an ace If I were to focus on the differences in this past month or what I wish happened this past month I would have missed out on all the above. Truth is all of the above is what life is about. To be able to go with the flow, grow through the unexpected, ditch the plans and allow yourself to just be. A big colourful bunch of dahlias all stuffed in a vase for a birthday girl yesterday who loves pink & yellow 😊💕🌸 Nothing fancy and arranged just a heap of bright pretty colours all in together 🤪 It’s going to be a bit of an easier, quieter day on the farm today. We went down to Brisbane for a music concert yesterday which was a bit fun & different 😊♥️🎶 Any other @fleetfoxes fans out there at the show last night? They played at dusk at the outdoor Riverstage and their rich harmonies played out as the sun set, a few bats flying overhead.. It was such a different thing to do when our heads are full of mid-season dahlia doings 🤪 and hanging out with dearest old friends of course added to the soul food ♥️ So we’re still awake at dawn as usual, even though it was a late night .. those circadian rhythms are strong.. so I’ll head out soon and just do a smaller harvest today… and then through the day some easier jobs and might sneak in a good nap somewhere along the line to catch up 😉

We interrupt this constant stream of dahlia seedling spam to bring you the most beautiful Dragonfruit flowers being pollinated by pollen-drunk honey bees 🐝😎 As they are growing in one of the dahlia patches I feel like it’s still technically dahlia farm content 🤪 And golly isn’t that flower just exquisite anyway! And bonus it turns into a fruit in a couple of months 😊
First day in weeks that I’ve woken up without any florist orders to fill. Phewf it has been a busy stretch (but so grateful for all the orders ♥️!) When first light begins I’ll still wander out to the patch with the pooches to get that precious morning sunlight in my eyes (so good for the body rhythms) and will still cut a couple of buckets to bunch up for our honesty cart. I do love these summer season routines. My focus will shift now that Valentines Day is over. I really need to get onto double checking IDs and tagging everything in the patch so that there are no errors with digging tubers when they all look the same in winter! Also have to make some tough decisions about which of the seedlings will graduate into their next year. In some cases the decisions are straightforward - so much so that I may start pulling out a few that are clearly just not doing well enough - often if their stems are just not suited to cut flowers and particularly if that’s coupled with a less-than-inspiring bloom. Others I’ll keep for now but tag them to cull end of season. I’ll also start doing some early hand pollination of selected crosses. The bulk of our hybridising will happen later in Autumn, when the petal count naturally drops back with the shorter days and centres blow open.. but there are some petaloid crosses I’d like to get working on sooner than later, so I’ll start bagging blooms after this week’s forecasted wet weather passes. And I’ve also just started taking more cuttings. Backups for the favourites in the first year seedling patch (and random self-seeded standouts), increasing stock for second year seedlings that I want to grow a lot more of next season, and a few favourite names cultivars that I find difficult to store tubers for, so I back them up with plants and pot tubers through the winter. Happy Saturday everyone! 💕🌸 Our patch is looking very devoid of colour at the moment - such a huge couple of weeks of constant harvesting until it’s almost back to buds.. and we had to deadhead a lot of damaged blooms after some really heavy rain bruised a lot of the more delicate ones yesterday too. But we’ve given everything a nice feed and the rain would have washed that down into the soil and there are heaps of new little buds coming through… so if we can give the plants a bit of a rest for a couple of days and only do minimal harvests, we’ll start seeing some more colour come back through again soon 💕🌸 With only 6 weeks left of our dahlia season we’re pretty much at capacity for orders now through until the end. We are so grateful to our florists who make the trip up the mountain to collect their blooms- truly supporting local flowers in a very real and practical way 🥰💕🌸

St Lucia #mudbaths - this is the definition of YOLO man! 🚤 A bumpy bumpy speed boat ride with rum punch, past Mick Jagger’s house (casual site) and the hotel where they filmed ‘Entourage’. 🏔️ We saw a closeup of the Pitons 🏔️ 🦇 A butt crack in the rocks that was actually a fruit bat cave 🥵The mud baths were SO hot! 38 degrees coming from the volcano! Healing from having lived a full 43 years. It’s been hard. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever tried doing. And I keep having to try every day. It’s been the hardest year and the best year. I stayed at the #stanleyhotel in #colorado this month. It's my #teenagerbirthday #tradition to do #hauntedtrips together. Yeah, I raise awesome humans, I know. I have to say, Stanley was the most haunted trip we've had yet. We stayed for two nights in this stunning, historic landmark. We did the paid tours, our own sneaky tours, and just chilled in places where they didn't kick us out. My rating for this stunning beauty is a solid four stars. I'm picky, five stars is perfection. The restaurants were great food, the drinks fun, the tour guides engaging, and the ghosts perfectly curious. Our experiences included noises in the walls, doors opening and closing on their own, and objects appearing that weren't there before in closets. Haunted indeed. Time to breathe. ♥️ So much hustle bustle in these days leading up to Christmas that I have to consciously remind myself to just. slow. down. This morning was way too hectic trying to get as many dahlias cut into their orders and bunched for the cart with the many beautiful lovely customers waiting at 8am… in those moments it’s so hard to not get caught up racing around and getting flustered 🤪 But taking time now to untangle all that craziness with a slow breakfast and nice cup of tea. I just want to know how you superhumans (otherwise known as parents) manage to do this kind of thing AND have kids. Boggles my mind, truly ♥️. I hope everyone can find a few little moments of peace and rest in these next few days… 🌸 Dahlia pictured is one of my self-seeded ones, blocking a path but guaranteed that she’ll be kept for the season regardless, as she’s a lovely colour, beautiful shape and excellent cut.. and she’s one of the petaloid seedlings I pointed out a week or so. (But pinker and has lost her white glow in the centre) You can’t see the petaloids much in this photo, but they add a lovely little textural element in real life. 💕🌸

We’re having some much needed and appreciated rain today, but fortunately we had a window between showers early this morning to do our daily harvest which was helpful. 💕🌸 It seems this is a very florally Christmas for so many people - we’re booked out almost every day with our florist buckets and the honesty cart is selling out every day too! Dahlias everywhere! 😊💕🌸 This photo was of a quick top-up harvest I did yesterday when the scores of bunches on the cart had already sold by mid morning so I darted around the breeding patch and cut these pretty seedlings that aren’t all florist quality but still full of colour and happiness 💛💕🌸 For locals the cart will be stocked up with fresh bunches every morning from 8am and we do still have some availability for buckets next week, and moving forward into January. Nature and the beauty in it is so good for us. Looking at these perfect dahlias for hours a day surely must be doing such good things for my brain. Must be time to do some research and go down the rabbit hole of fractals in nature and effects on the brain…anyone know of some great books or resources? @hubermanlab maybe you can do an episode for us on science-based benefits of walking in nature and viewing fractals? I’m so grateful to live only minutes away from national park walks through the rainforest and I make sure I get some shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) in regularly.. but I’m sure every morning harvesting these blooms for several hours must be nourishing my brain too. ♥️ Well the birds have started outside so it won’t be long before it’s light enough to start.. have a beauty-filled day everyone, and don’t forget to get some time in nature today 💕🌸

Look at that petal count for days! This is ‘Vera’s Elma’. She’s a sport (or genetic mutation) of ‘Elma Elizabeth’ (which I also adore and grow a lot of) and she has sooooo many petals! This is what I’m looking for in my breeding patch - blooms that are heavy and full with petals and open over many days still keeping a beautiful full centre. I managed to collect some Elma Elizabeth seed this year and have a few seedlings growing so I’m looking forward to seeing if that trait tends to pass through to her offspring. 🤞 🌸 Another very hot one here in SEQld today. The plants are not enjoying this heat wave, (and nor am I) and we’d also like some rain soon. Thunder storms forecast for the next 4 days.. so hoping to get some rain out of those hopefully without any damaging winds or hail. 😳 But not much we can do about the weather, so I’ll just focus on this beautiful morning which is just unfolding and go and cut buckets and buckets of blooms for today’s big florist order 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸 Happy Friday 😊

This is a fun second year seedling that is flushing at the moment and I really love the 6”, full depth, high petal count heads on this one, as well as the slight kink/twist to the petal tips.. too messy for the show bench, but that’s the way I like it 🤪 Interestingly the first individual blooms that came through a few weeks ago were so low in petal count and had open centres, and I though I had mistake when labelling the seedling last year… but probably just finding their groove and needing the longer days to develop all those lush lovely petals! Interestingly my notes on this bloom described it as watermelon/peach.. so the colour is quite different to what I remember - but we do tend to get a real shift in colouring in certain cultivars through the season here with deeper pinker tones early in the season.. so maybe it will get warmer and lighten up a bit as the months tumble along 🤔 🌸 I can hear whipbirds outside my windows this morning. I’m just waiting for it to be light enough to go and harvest today’s orders.. just 3 buckets today.. we’re easing into the season since only a small portion of the plants are producing. One bright cheerful bucket for a florist arranging bunches to sell at a market, another bucket of specific bright colours for a corporate event florist, and a third is a mixed bucket for someone making up bunches to gift friends for Christmas. I love knowing where our blooms are going.. as I work through the patch I do imagine where they will end up.. bringing a sparkle to someone’s eye and a smile to their heart receiving them as a gift, or the delight in buying a beautiful bunch from the markets, or being a component in some beautiful event artistry that creates an environment that inspires and delights people. I’d never want to do things on a larger scale where i lose that connection, as it’s part of the joy for me ♥️ Plus I wouldn’t have the time to enjoy breeding them so much.. and exploring the nuance of each new bloom coming through. Any particular thoughts on this new one? Nothing is coming to me for a name, so it’s just 22-160CAL (yes she’s a Cafe au Lait baby which is a bit of a surprise…)
Happiness is dahlias, (obviously!) but it’s also deep connection and a matched generative drive between people. I’ve been having a lot more social time with family and old trusted friends lately and it feels so deeply good. As an introvert, and someone who has struggled with social anxiety at times, I’ve found in stressful periods of my life I’ve really tended to withdraw, but in this last year or so I’m finding so much joy in sharing time with my special people. This soft toned bunch of dahlias is sitting on our kitchen bench at the moment awaiting a visit from special friends, one visiting from US, and we’re sharing a simple lunch together to catch up. Happiness to me is simplicity. It’s satisfaction and joy from hard work done, and having small but meaningful goals that I can work towards. Apparently as we age past our middle years, and pending good health, we do tend towards higher levels of self-reported “happiness” whatever that means to us. Where does your happiness reside? 🌸 Oh and dahlias.. that’s right.. who are we seeing here? The vase is full of seedlings from our breeding patch, most of these won’t make it to release, as they have “flaws” in terms of cut flower traits, but I’m enjoying them in this early part of the season when we don’t have many yet. As you swipe you’ll see that my “crazy little monster” that I’ve been posting about in stories and the Aus dahlia Facebook group.. it is increasing in petal count but still quite low. The 5th photo shows 2 different seedlings - just to show one that is in the same colourway as the little monster but much much better form. I know the majority are pushing for me to keep that crazy little guy, but just showing how we can get that lovely colour in something so much “better” already. But it’s ok, still growing in the patch and I promise even if I decide not to keep it I’ll make sure it doesn’t get composted. 🤪 🌸 But don’t forget about my question above - I’d love to hear what brings you your deepest state of happiness? ♥️

We took a rare break from the brewery to join #Diwali celebrations with some friends. The curries at dinner were amazing and this is what they whipped up for breakfast. At first we were thinking what are we eating. It’s like a curry for breakfast, our senses couldn’t compute, but it came together and was amazing. Much like kombucha, it doesn’t compute at first sip, especially if you’re used to a diet of sugar drinks, but when it clicks it clicks. It’s amazing!
