One of our zone-pushing experimental plants, loblolly-bay (Gordonia lasianthus) is a native of the southeastern U.S. The range of this species closely follows the Atlantic coastline, but this clone, introduced by Chuck Weeks at Nurseries Caroliniana and named 'Swampy' by our friend Sean Hogan, is from a population near Aiken, SC at the cooler inland edge of the range. In cultivation elsewhere, it appears to exhibit improved cold-hardiness. Limeledge's plant has been maintained in a pot and brought inside to the teaching labs at @collegeofstrose in the beginning of January during the past two winters. It is clearly an underrated foliage plant; while it remains evergreen, some leaves turn scarlet before dropping, creating a very poinsettia-like appearance for a brief time. Later, many of the remaining leaves turn an attractive shade of deep burgundy and remain in that state through the winter. Our plant tends to flower in August through October, and they are delightfully fragrant as well as beautiful. As this species is both very soil-specific and questionably hardy at Limeledge, we have taken great care to find just the right location for it next to one of our trails. We plan to finally plant it in Spring 2024; with a little bit of luck, it will survive to greet visitors when we fully open in 2025! Here is a pic of my nature garden trail. It is protected by land conservation. If you notice the little white blossoms on the path in the forefront, these are Gordonia lasianthus blossoms, or Loblolly Bay. It's a slow growing evergreen and can grow up to 70 feet tall. I have dozens of them in the forest, but they are all very tall, so I didn't recognize a volunteer that ended up in my butterfly garden. I thought it was magnolia of some kind. I left it there because native plants are best. Yesterday, it blossomed, and it is indeed a baby loblolly bay. It's too close to the house and should be moved. The issue is that this tree hates to be moved and is extremely difficult to cultivate. So for now, I will leave it and decide later how and where to move it. There is lots of building happening in my county, and it upsets me when they bulldoze these beautiful trees. The pollinators depend on them. Last month, they took down a whole forest and put up storage units.š Loblolly is an old English word for porridge or thick gruel. Since this tree grows in bogs or thick mucky soil, it was nicknamed Loblolly bay by the English settlers. It likes a maritime swamp forest. This genus honors James Gordon (1728-91), a British nurseryman. The Latin name means "hairy-flowered." The flowers resemble camellias and, although, grow singly at leaf axils, they are concentrated at the branch tip looking like clusters. It's hard to get a good pic of the tall trees in blossom. šø So I went back for a third final time to Monroe Conservation Area. The other two times were so memorable that I had to try the last trail. I must say, I didnāt enjoy this trail. It was monotonous; I never actually got to the river, and I got very lost. The trail map is nothing like the actual trails. There are so many service roads or alternate paths that arenāt anywhere on the map. And then I got stuck on winding paths that took me the wrong direction in scrub areas where I couldnāt escape. Night was falling and I didnāt now how to get to my car. Two Loblolly bay trees (Gordonia lasianthus) grow in the arboretum, both blooming now. In the botanic garden, right along the trail near Bloomwood Rd., one stands approximately 30 feet tall, with blooms up high in the sun. Occasionally they fall and weāre able to enjoy them up close. The second tree was planted last winter, a large container-grown tree about 6ā tall that was purchased locally. It grows alongside the trail just downhill of the Magnolia-Azalea garden on the west side of the arboretum. Gordonia lasianthus is native to the Southeast, found in rich wet forests and savannas. It is in the tea plant family, Theaceae, and the large blooms resemble its distant relative, the camellia. Bees and hummingbirds are drawn to the rich nectar.
