I stood at the edge of a crop field when I suddenly noticed this small hare leveret down the tramline, chewing on the crops. I approached slowly and quietly, getting close enough to capture the image. I got down low and fired a burst of shots. I particularly like this one because of the facial expression on the hare as it munches on the crop.' Congratulations @steveallcockphotography! Chased in by rains and wind and low grey clouds that scud the skies, moping like down-trodden teenagers. They come smuggling summer under their wings, hidden in the bubbling notes that dwell in their scarlet throats and those navy-tinged feathers still storing winter sun. But everyone knows, of course, that just the one does not a summer make. Especially when, despite what the clocks and calendars tell us, we are locked in the spikes of a blackthorn winter. But people notice their presence, they stop whilst walking the dog to watch as the first sail overhead. People pause, key in door lock, to stare skywards at the streamers they've not seen in a while. Silver-spotted Skippers herald the end of the butterfly year, still flying as August turns into Autumn 🍂 This dainty little chalk grassland butterfly is named after its distinctive silvery white wing patches that the other 7 British skipper species don't have. As adults, all skippers will visit flowers for nectar but their caterpillars really benefit from your grassy areas. This is because the caterpillars of 6 of our Skippers need to feed on grass, with this particular species needing the short-growing grass called Sheep's Fescue. ‘Flies are friends, not food’ 🙋🏼♂️ is not something you would ever hear in a peat bog full of carnivorous sundews. These utterly spectacular creatures hold the keys to a door that takes you through to the more gruesome side of nature… These ☝️ are leaves, believe it or not. They belong to Round-leaved Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia). They’re covered in rather attractive short, red tentacles that are every bit as beautiful as a dew-laden grassland at dawn. But. It’s a trap. (Don’t worry, not for you dear reader, unless you’re a fly). Those innocent-looking droplets of liquid are a gloopy, sticky, viscous glue from which small insects are afforded no chance of escape. Once glued in place, their struggling alerts the plant to their presence via a series of chemical reactions. And like Bruce the shark, when the sundew senses movement it only has one thing on its mind: ‘I’m having FLY tonight!’ *🪰 Slowly, steadily, the sundew rolls its leaf up. Slowly, steadily, the fly is asphyxiated. The sundew then begins preparing its meal, releasing a cocktail of digestive enzymes that dissolve all the good, nutritious, tasty parts into a root-wrigglingly delicious fly soup 🤤 Once the sundew has slurped down its dinner, absorbing it through the leaf, it unrolls its trap again, ready for dessert - mosquito mousse, perhaps… Gruesome. But undeniably awesome. Unexpected Encounters in the Heart of Nature! 🌿☀️ This photo takes me back to a memorable moment from last summer when we made a spontaneous stop at a breathtaking spot. Little did we know, it was home to a colony of Arctic terns fiercely guarding their precious eggs hidden in the meadow behind us. 🐦🥚 As I captured this unique scene with my Sony 6400 and the Zeiss 16-70mm F4 lens, the Arctic terns, known for their protective nature, swooped down in defense. The dune’s answer to hanging baskets ✌️ Eeee what a find!! For Day 3 of @futures_night #Naturegram we visited Braunton Burrows, a big sand dune system on the north Devon coast. It was *brill* 😌 This place is known for its nature and in June it’s one of the top sand dune sites for plants in the country. Even in late September there was HEAPS of stuff to see. So I quickly slipped into plant hunting mode, eyes sweeping across the short, sandy turf speckled yellow with Lesser Hawkbit. It was a warm, sunny day, and we pottered around the dunes, enjoying the sunshine after several soggy bike rides. The disturbed sandy ground was home to some beautiful annual plants. There was lots of pink Common Stork’s-bill, fluffy lilac Hare’s-foot Clover and some of the smallest Viper’s-bugloss I’ve ever seen, their electric-blue flowers still easy to spot in the surrounding vegetation. As we began climbing a sandy bank, Lucy stopped and pointed. There at our feet was a little yellow pansy, a tiny mimic of those gaudy flowers you might find in a hanging basket outside a pub. It was a Dune Pansy. A DUNE PANSY! We have three wild pansy species here in the UK: Field, Mountain and Wild Pansies. Dune Pansy (Viola tricolor ssp. curtisii) is a subspecies of Wild Pansy that’s adapted for life on sandy soils. Sand dunes - notoriously one of the most hostile places for a plant to live - make the perfect home for this little creature. What’s super cool about this is that this short stretch of North Devon coastline is literally the *only place* in the whole of SW England where this lovely little plant is known to grow. The only place! We found a few of them, sometimes on their own, sometimes gathered in little groups on sandy banks. It’s only the third time I’ve ever seen one, buzzing!!

At this time bears are entering their hyperphagia phase at this time (essentially, extreme eating time), but did you also know that during hyperphagia their metabolic rate skyrockets by a whopping 50%? Botanical carnivory is one of the most gruesomely intriguing things about nature. It’s COOL and fascinating and horrifying and I just love it 🤌 This particular insect-muncher is called Pale Butterwort (Pinguicula lusitanica). I spotted it lurking in a cushion of Sphagnum, just waiting for little midgies to let down their guard, take a break from biting me, and rest on their leaves. A butterwort’s leaf is natural flypaper, you see. Each plant has a rosette of pastel green leaves covered in teeny tiny, sticky, gloopy glands. When a midge lands and gets stuck, it triggers a response and these glands begin secreting digestive enzymes. At the same time, the cells underneath the insect lose their internal pressure, so they shrink, allowing the leaf to close over its catch and cover it with even more enzyme-releasing glands. These enzymes dissolve the insect into a pool of yummy nutrients. Once it’s digested its prey, the butterwort guzzles up all those tasty midge salts and nitrates, then settles back to wait for its next meal. Without doubt a slow and horrible way to die. It’s grizzly, it’s unapologetic, it’s nature at its coolest 🙌 Bent down low to the ground, I was being bitten to death by midges, but found comfort in the idea that this butterwort might soon be feasting on a midge that was full of my blood. Have you heard about the plant that’s SO badass that the devil was like nah that’s too much, need to stop that one? Arran was covered in Devil’s-bit Scabious (Succisa pratensis). It was present on every walk, on every verge, in every damp grassland and boggy headland. While cycling along the coastal road the other day, we came across a sea of it, spotting the characteristic purple scabious haze that had settled over the grassland where it gently sloped down to the shingle. The blooming of this graceful wildflower in August and September is one of the great mass-flowering events of late summer. As July turns to August, the bulbous flowerheads of blueish purple buds expand, swelling like blackberries coming into season. They build anticipation over several weeks, slowly working towards flowering. It seems to take forever, but eventually, after weeks of watching and waiting, some threshold is reached, the floral dam breaks, and hillsides and grasslands are suddenly washed with scabious purple. This was Devil’s-bit in full swing. We hopped off our bikes and joined the carder bees and hoverflies greedily obsessing over the tangle of purple. The smell of this scabious is savoury and aromatic - it reminds me a lot of frying onions (which as well all know is one of the world’s all time best smells). That scent is medicine for my soul. I sniffed and snuffled, inhaling deeply, crawling from plant to plant, breathing in that delicious smell and quickly becoming lightheaded 🥴 Devil’s-bit Scabious is a real healer, for the body too, as well as the soul. Over the centuries, it’s been used for every kind of medicinal ailment you could imagine. Coughs, fevers, bites, boils, bruises, swellings, worms, dandruff, pimples, cuts - even the plague. You name it, Devil’s-bit was probably used to treat it. Pretty badass plant, right? It was actually SO effective at curing people that it supposedly fell foul of the devil, who bit away the end of the root out of spite, envying its usefulness to humans. To this day, the root of Devil’s-bit Scabious comes to an abrupt halt, truncated, as if gnawed off in a fit of devilish jealousy 😈

Salty-skinned, wind-whipped, sun-kissed and absolutely exhausted in the best kind of way 😌 I’m just back from a week’s holiday and plenty of not-so-Scottish weather on the Isle of Arran ☀️☀️, hiking up mountains, wild swimming, crunching along shingly beaches and cycling up boggy hills, all the while plant hunting to my heart’s desire. I’m so tired (it feels like I’ve done more cycling and walking and swimming and scrambling this week than the rest of the year combined 🥴😌🚴🏼♂️), but it’s the BEST kind of tiredness. The kind you feel after getting up early for sunrise walks, fitting in *one more* sea swim, climbing up high again for just one more view. It’s been a refreshing, deep, much-needed reset for the mind and soul. No work, no emails, no social media, no laptop, no WhatsApps, no Netflix. Other than using my phone to take photos (because who WOULDN’T want to take photos of sundews and quillworts 🤷🏼♂️), I’ve had an entirely screen-free week and it’s been *heaven*. I have loads of cool plants to show you, but, for now, here’s a pic of me hanging out with some beautiful Alpine Clubmoss (Diphasiastrum alpinum) at the top of some big old hills. We’d climbed ALL the way to the top but I still spent ages sat staring at the ground. Did you know there are tons of shore birds just 15-20 minutes from Boise? Blacks creek is teeming with soooo many right now, including a bunch of great egrets. I don't know what make them so great though, they're super hard to expose for. Anyway, if you love killdeer, sandpipers, various grebes, coots, egrets, lesser and greater yellow legs, short-billed dowitchers, black-necked stilts, and many more, you should head out there. I've photographed 4 different owls out there also and other interesting birds like thrashers, who look like they drank too many energy drinks. And that list is just the tip of the iceberg for this habitat. 🐦🦆🦢 Happy Friday!

Whether it's lounging on rocks or frolicking in meadows, they like to enjoy the warm weather! Additionally, marmots have got some serious pipes, and they use them as their secret weapon. When danger lurks, marmots unleash sharp, loud whistles to send out an SOS to others. Man it's been a week. This is just the topper on the cake. I'm piggy-backing off my last post about how sometimes being a wildlife photographer, or even just a person who walks a lot out in nature you might see things like this. I know some accounts are rainbows and butterflies, which is awesome. Who doesn't love those things? Puppies too. But I came across this a couple of days ago and I'm not here to sugar coat the venn diagram where humans and wildlife intersect. Sometimes it looks like this. Or it's a snapping turtle making lunch of a mallard (I won't post those photos). This is a juvenile heron with fishing gear hooked into its mouth and a rock tied to the end of the line. Yes, a rock. I'll post something a little less wuh wuh wuh in my next post. I promise. Just keeping it real here.

Summer has been beautiful on our patch this year, and it’s been lovely to visit all our favourite spots, and shoot and record a range of species that call it home. The rewilding initiative has certainly helped with butterfly, hoverfly and bee numbers in areas that they’re usually scarce. I’ve been bitten, stung, and accidentally backed my bum into nettles countless times tracking down my subjects 😆 but it’s been a lot of fun.
