I love the Crystal Cove Perimeter Loop, since you really feel like your getting away from it all, and it has some spectacular view. I hiked up El Moro Canyon, to Poles, and on to Bommer Ridge. There were not too many flowers in bloom on the ridge aside from a few patches of Red Monkeyflower, and everblooming Bush Sunflower. It was getting late in the day, and I tried to pick up the pace as I turned right down Moro Ridge, jogging through the rolling hills. I passed by an empty backpacker camp, Upper Moro Campground, and then Lower Moro Campground. This is a great spot for testing out your gear, and backpacking skills. I ended my hike, by zig zagging down Cut Across Trail, as I descended into the canyon, just as the last light was filtering down through it. The streams were flowing, which is such a calming sound. I decided to do a bit of hiking and trail running around the Crystal Cover Perimeter loop. This is a trail I have come back to again and again, regularly for years. I love Crystal Cove since there are so many different routes to choose from. Today I was feeling like starting at El Moro Canyon, heading up Poles to No Dogs, taking it all the way to the ridge at Bommer, and descending along Moro Ridge. I started around 3pm, on a sunny and cool April afternoon. Being a Sunday, the park was fairly crowded. Driving through Laguna Beach on the way here, the town had tons of traffic. It felt like the first sunny weekend day we have had in some time, with all the recent rains. As I hiked along El Moro Canyon, I crossed over the rusty iron bridge, and past BFI, a super steep yet overgrown looking option for reaching the ridge. I was greeted by a bunny, standing by the sign. This was actually a sign of things to come, as I would see more bunnies today than I have ever seen before on a hike anywhere. As I hiked along, it was evident that a super bloom would not happen this year. Even the mustard, a wild invasive plant, was struggling to take hold. There were just a few wildflowers here and there. The new spring growth, looked to already be waning. I could hear the sound of water flowing, and sure enough the creek was flowing. In fact it was flowing over the trail at one point, something I don’t usually see in drier years. I knew the desert waterfalls of Anza Borrego could be flowing, with all the rain we had in the last couple days. I decided to check out Maidenhair Falls, located about 2.5 miles up Hellhole Canyon, one of my favorite spots for viewing desert wildflowers in the spring. I had never been to this waterfall before, and had no idea what to expect. I came to an green palm filled oasis, and the trail became rocky. I had to scramble up 6 ft boulders, and struggled to find my way. Plenty of hikers were astounded by these boulders. They were simply turning back, once the trail ended, and the scramble began. I decided to continue on, use my best moves, to make it through all this. After a bit of a scramble, I continued through a maze of brush, high grasses, and stream crossings for another .25 mile, to reach Maidenhair Falls. I had turned around, several times, since there were many confusing trails strewn about the canyon. I ducked through an opening in some vines, and there I was standing beneath a giant fern covered rock wall, with Maidenhair Falls cascading down in front of me to a shallow pool of water. My first stop on my trip to Anza Borrego was Henderson Valley Rd. which according to Anza Borrego State Park, has some of the best blooms to see, in addition to places like Yaqui Well, and Canyon Sin Nombre, in the south of the park. I took a trip to Anza Borrego last week to see the wildflowers before they faded away. There was plenty of desert beauty to see. But first I had to stop to check out the rock garden, heading down Montezuma Valley Rd to the desert floor. I passed through Ranchita with it's cow pastures, which is criss-crossed by the PCT, on the way. It's an area I hiked through on PCT Section A a year ago.
