Weight loss is simply about burning off more calories than you intake for a sustained period of time. 1. 20 WEEKS TO TRAIN- Depending on your starting skill level, allow yourself at around 20 weeks to train. This is a good rule of thumb. Unlike a 5K where you can wing it, even experienced runners need about 5 months to go from zero to race day. If you run distance consistently, then you may be able to start with a base and require less time. 2. REST DAYS ROCK- Rest days are the most important days in your training regimen. This is where all your work is solidified. 2 rest days a week is ideal. 3. MARATHON PACE- The goal for the first one is the finish line. After that if there is a specific finish time goal, use long runs once a week to maintain your desired marathon pace. Keeping that minute-per-mile pace as you add miles to your long run each week will ensure you the clock says exactly what you want it to say at the finish line. 4. TRAIN THE COURSE- Whichever course you choose, train for the course terrain, the city's weather that time of year and the course layout (out and back, loop around the city or on your way home the entire time (like Boston). This takes some of the mental challenge out of race day. 5. SEEK SUPPORT- Find support whether it is an occasional running buddy, a Facebook group, a coach or someone to pick you up at Mile 18 (where the real race begins). Whatever type of support will get you to your finish line. LIKE EVERYTHING IN LIFE... Have you been for your first mammogram yet? How often do you go? I am setting up a series of health routines to ensure I am controlling my what I can. Check ups can catch a potential nasty early, often saving us, then saving us cash and saving the system a bunch of resources. I went for my first colonoscopy last week ๐Ÿ˜ all was good ๐ŸŽŠ and the experience was pretty chilled. Far less traumatic than I thought it would be. I was recommended to have a colonoscopy as I started to get closer to 50. The doc said I was all good so only should come back when I am 60!!!! What defines a health crisis?. As a nutritional therapist there is a pattern that I often see when I work with people. Most of us live a life consisting of little habits that weโ€™ve put into practice for so long itโ€™s developed into behaviour. From the foods we eat to the amount of physical movement we do, our passions and hobbies and what we navigate towards when we are trying to deal with stress, it all adds up and greatly influences our health, or lack of. The real health crisis is not the fact that people experience illness. We live in a highly stressful and toxic world and it is impossible to not feel the effects of it in one way or another. The crisis happens when we do not tune into our body's needs and we actively reach for things that prevent our body from doing what it was designed to do, such as ultra processed foods, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, poor sleeping habits, on-going stress and a lack of meaningful relationships. With this as our foundation we increase our dependency on a healthcare system that is already on its knees and in many cases can offer us nothing but symptom relief. Choosing to prioritise health is not a guarantee that we will never experience any adverse health conditions but it does set us up to deal with those situations far better than if we spend year upon year neglecting ourselves and then putting the full weight of responsibility for our wellness into the hands of the healthcare system. This is the reality we are currently living in and it is a model that is not working. A few small changes can make a big difference in one persons health over time, and if we collectively commit to taking better care of ourselves and making better choices, these changes can have a massive impact on our public health, enabling us to use society's resources more efficiently. 1 BREAK IT UP- Don't be intimidated by the whole climb. Divide the hill into smaller, more manageable sections. Focus on conquering each section one at a time rather than staring up at the entire peak. Focus 10 feet in front of you! 2 SHORTEN YOUR STRIDE- Lengthening your stride uphill is a recipe for burnout. Take shorter, quicker steps to maintain efficiency and leg speed. 3 DON'T DRAIN THE TANK- Hills can be tough! There's no shame in walking some or all of it, especially if it helps you maintain a good pace and avoid burning out. Run when you can, walk if necessary. 4 LEAN INTO IT- While hunching over is a no-no, a slight forward lean from the hips can help you power uphill. Imagine your body angled slightly forward, but your core engaged to keep your back straight and posture strong. 5 DON'T FORGET TO BREATHE- Hills demand more oxygen. Focus on deep, controlled breaths from your diaphragm to keep yourself fueled and your muscles working effectively. I started my bodybuilding journey in December of 2021 where I weighed 257, which at the time was my heaviest. I was morbidly obese in 2000โ€™s when I weighed at 310 lbs at my lifetime heaviest. Iโ€™m a gastric bypass patient and lost 110 lbs within that year but slowly gained it back, along with a few health issues the last few decades. As of April 2024, Iโ€™m about 60lbs away of my goal weight and 5 dress sizes. Iโ€™m very proud of my current accomplishments and continuously strive to reach my goal of competing in 2025. I have decided to join a bodybuilding organization and learning their rules for the competition. Each organization has their own guidelines as to what they find aesthetic. I hope to give valuable information that can help you and share with your family and friends. My goal is to be build a supportive Fitness Community because our Health is our Wealth.
