Brilliant deconstruction of the suburban dream/illusion, 40+ years before David Lynch created Blue Velvet. A stellar cast. A script written with a scalpel. And some of the best (because subtle) cinematography in Hitchcock's work.

An eye opening glimpse into life in an enclosed order of nuns in the early twentieth century. The discipline is superhuman. Audrey Hepburn gives an exceptional performance. Peter Finch is also really impressive. It was a good gig for actresses - there are legions of nuns, including Edith Evans, Peggy Ashcroft, Rosalie Crutchley, Mildred Dunnock and the lovely Irish actress Patricia Collinge. Hoy por primera vez voy hablar de una película de la leyenda alfred hitchcock, es tan raro que no halla hablado de algunas de sus películas porque me encantan jajaja. Para mí parecer estamos ante una de las mejores películas de hitchcock,dónde tiene la clásica medida perfecta de avance del suspenso, con muy buenas consecuencias mientras avanza la trama que explora muy bien en la psicología de los personajes, con un toque de humor que es muy importante porque aparte de darle naturalidad a la situación, tiene un punto de critica y se conecta muy bien con las secuencia de suspenso. Algo que se valora mucho de esta peli es que los personajes son diferentes lo que logra que la película tenga una mejor deconstruccion de trama y cada uno de ellos tiene punto de vista lo que le da personalidad. La película es una crítica a las clases sociales, aparte de esto nos muestra el pensamiento de persona normal sobre un criminal y retrata muy bien el narcisismo,el individualismo y la manipulación de este último,con una actuación de Joseph cotten (el criminal) intimidante!! A mí parecer es una obra maestra que debe ser más valorada y recomendada, por eso le traigo este post bien merecido!

In order to join her equally ruthless brothers in a scheme that is sure to gain her wealth and power, she uses her young, naïve daughter (Wright) to fetch her estranged, ailing husband who is living elsewhere. When she cannot convince her husband to give her the money, she sets forward a cunning plan which escalates. Bette Davis and William Wyler fought a great deal during filming. Disagreements ranged from Davis's interpretation of the character (Wyler thought she should be more sympathetic) to the appearance of the house (Davis thought it was far too opulent for a family struggling financially), to her appearance (Wyler thought her white makeup made her look like a Kabuki performer.) Staring Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotton as the two "Charlie's", Wright as the small-town girl who's excitement over a sudden visit from her beloved Uncle Charlie is short-lived when she begins to suspect he may be the 'Merry Widow' murderer. With great performances, especially the menacing one by Cotton who's character was based on real-life psycho killer Earle Nelson. Filmed on location in Santa Rosa, California due to wartime restrictions on set costs gave the film a more authentic visual quality. There's a shot early on of a waiving first responder that may have inspired a similar one in the opening of Blue Velvet, another film that explored the dangerous underbelly of the ordinary American small town. Though not as popular as some of the other Hitchcock films, it was often cited by the director himself as his favorite of his own films as well as Wright's of her own work. Personally I choose Vertigo and The Best Years of Our Lives, but there's no doubt in Shadow's greatness. Cinematography by Joseph A. Superb work by cinematographer Gregg Toland didn’t even receive a nomination. Davis was under contract to Warner Bros. at the time so producer Samuel Goldwyn offered to trade Gary Cooper, who was under contract to him, for a one-picture deal. Warners accepted and cast Cooper in Howard Hawks’ SERGEANT YORK (1941). This was the last of three films that William Wyler and Bette Davis collaborated on following their previous work on JEZEBEL (1938) and THE LETTER (1940). The film marked the screen debut of Teresa Wright, possibly best known for her role as Charlie in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic SHADOW OF A DOUBT (1943). Five letters that could define your entire life in both negative and positive way. Wanna know why and how? Then watch this underrated gem master William Wyler. It wasn't the first time then, but bringing an advanced level intellectualism in a regular genre like Family drama was definitely a first time thing for silver screen. Of course there were couple of other known classics but i personally found them overrated hence, The Little Foxes gets the crown. BETTE DAVIS! What a legendary actress she was. And what remarkable roles she had done. I mean sometimes those films were not that great but her performance always stood out. I am glad that The Little Foxes worth the level of her performance unlike some other underwhelming flicks of her with the same Wyler. The ruthless, moneyed Hubbard clan lives in, and poisons, their part of the deep South at the turn of the twentieth century. The film has some dialogues which may not hit you hard but leave you a small wound of poke whicch you'll remember later sometimes. It's a big philosophy about the world, the greedy people and the people who just stood and watched it all happening. There's lot which cannot be mentioned here to spoil your fun. Performances of all the actors are fine but that young cute girl Teresa Wright surpassed my expectations. I have seen some of her popular films which released later, but still she looked very matured. The writing is top notch and the credit surely goes to the original play but the addition of perfect cinematic sense deserves separate Praise. The only thing i hate about Wyler is his inconsistency, he had ups and downs and this was certainly among those Ups. Overall, a 2 hours burn but a smoke forever. Identical name and identical presentations. Uncle Charlie's arrival at the train station has one of those foreboding images of what will happen. An immense black smoke that comes out of the chimney of the locomotive serves to suggest the arrival of something evil to the town, Santa Rosa. Characters that attract attention such as the figure of the traffic policeman, Charlie's mother and especially his father (𝙃𝙚𝙣𝙧𝙮 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨) who together with a neighbor (𝙃𝙪𝙢𝙚 𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙮𝙣) are all the time fantasizing how they would carry out a perfect murder, a comic counterpoint to the real one-story drama, Charlie's suspicions that his admired uncle is a murderer. A journey from love to fear, from one feeling to another led by 𝙃𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙘𝙤𝙘𝙠 with a perfect staging and in which his typical descriptive tracking shots are not lacking, this time used to create tension. An example is the moment in which 𝙒𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 comes down the stairs with the ring that his uncle gave her, and that is the only carelessness on his part and the only proof of his guilt. Unforgettable is the moment when Uncle Charlie begins to reveal to his niece his true cards, his true personality. He describes the world as a stinky place full of pigs and hard to understand for such a young girl, a general disgust for everything around him and for people. A curious fact because he is not exempt from reason, the dilemma is that this vision of life, however true it may be, does not justify under any circumstances the murder of widows, whether they deserve it or not.
