I was sitting on my porch in the quiet of the morning... the rain began coming down steadily.. ever so lightly. And I observed something .. I’ve noticed it before but it stood out to me again in this moment.. The birds were still singing!! In the midst of the rain, they continued their song! It was a joyful noise! It was a sound of peace in the midst of dreariness.. It reminded me of a time a few years ago ... The rain and wind had picked up... We had an amazing RedBud tree by our porch .. it formed a beautiful canopy, it was a place our girls loved to sit and rest. Many days they would play under it and climb it ... Sadly we no longer have that particular tree but on this particular day I remember as the wind and rain picked up a bird sought refuge under that canopy... and began to sing even louder ... under the canopy it was dry ... safe from the storm. It reminded me of our Lord ... He offers shelter and safety .. a canopy.. in the midst of the storm ... a place we are shielded from the buffeting rain and wind ... where, if we rest there, we can sing our praises even louder ... even in the midst of the storm!! If you are in a storm today … seek refuge in His presence. Psalm 91 tells us He will hid us under His wings and cover us with His feathers. It’s in His secret place we find peace and can continue to sing! I attached a picture of this tree and a video from this morning .. if you listen you can hear the birds in the rain. This past week was about rest. Men took the challenging step to pause, be still for 30 minutes, and draw close to the Father. It wasn't easy. Tonight, we gathered to worship and breakthroughs happened. Some found peace by inviting God into their storms, others let go of the fear of man and worshipped freely. And there were those who allowed themselves to be loved by God for the first time. Tonight, we celebrated as four men surrendered their lives to Jesus, realizing the power of inviting Him into their storms. Many times child of God, we try to figure out how God will or how we'll get ourselves out of the storm, Soon our body, and soul get overwhelmed and we go into depression. When we find ourselves in situations, conditions or circumstances that threaten our faith, peace and joy, if we have a healthy relationship with our Father, whether it's our relationship that's in crisis, or it's our businesses, maybe it's the children, or any other concerns; all we need do is go in humility to the Father and say to him, Father this is beyond me , this is more than I can bear, i don't understand a thing of what's going on, and definitely you know I can't survive this on my own. According to your word , I cast my cares on you, I know you care for and about me and I know your thoughts for me are of peace and not evil . Take this situation work it together for my good, how ever it pleases you, to your glory , grant rest and peace to my soul, my heart and mind . Thank you Father I know you've heard me, and you'll help me in Jesus name. Cast the burden on him and leave it there, don't go carrying it again, because you think or feel, he won't answer or he won't do it on your terms or in time . Leave it with him , receive his rest joy and peace by faith and continue to thank him for answers , his rescue, deliverance, healing ,provisions and salvation. Even if the situation doesn't appear to be changing. I tell you my brethren,God will surprise you. There's nothing too hard for him and nothing is impossible, only believe. OK, I get not everyone is comfortable singing because not everyone has been given this gift... BUT I challenge you to at least hum or gargle. Learning this explained so much to me. I have often been one to shut myself in my room, the bathroom, or go for a drive to crank music that connected with my current feelings. I'd sing my heart out... many times, I'd cry or even move vigorously, releasing anger. I'm almost embarrassed sharing that. 😳 I have had specific little songs I have sung with my kids that kept me focused and calm, or I have even sang quietly in the workplace, so I maintained my cool. Do you know anyone who hums or sings or whistles often? I do... this is a natural regulating activity that many people do as a simple sensory seeking practice. My 7yo sings and now whistles a lot. Most Saturday mornings, I go on a prayer walk as the sun is just starting to rise. And a few weeks ago, I was praying for peace and quiet. As I prayed for relief from my daily workload, I pictured open fields, empty beaches, a little cabin out in the Texas hill country. I imagined God relieving my stress and overwhelm by either removing my stressors and/or sending me on a little vacation. Maybe both!�� And instead, as I imagined sandy beaches and the lapping of water on the shore, the image was replaced with a picture of Jesus sleeping in a boat in the middle of a storm. See, the Bible tells us in Matthew 8 that Jesus was on a boat with his disciples when a huge storm rolled in. And that while the disciplines were panicking, Jesus was “sound asleep.” He calmed the storm for the disciples, of course, but what really struck me in that moment was that Jesus didn’t need the storm to end before he found rest. He didn’t need to be relocated from the storm to a quiet cabin in the hill country to find peace. Of course, we’d all prefer a quiet vacation, time to rest and heal and recover. And I believe we’ll get it one day! But in the meantime, maybe our storms don’t have to end for us to find rest and peace in the middle of them. Maybe we can connect with God, lay our storms at his feet for a few moments, and experience some sound sleep in the middle of the storm. “He will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day, and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain." I'll never forget when I was talking to one of my neighbors at my old house about autism and told him, "Chad has autism." He looked at me with surprise yet kindness said, "What? He doesn't look or seem like it." So often we go off of what we THINK autism should look like. I get a specific image in my head of those I have known in my life that very obviously have some form of genetic or intellectual disability. But in reality autism is a VERY large spectrum and each autistic person presents differently. Did you know identical twins can be born with autism and still present differently even though they are identical twins? I just learned this. Honest, I'm still figuring out how to navigate being married to an autistic man after 20 years and I'm definitely still figuring out being a mama to an autistic child. But Love knows no bounds. Today, I want to encourage you to reflect on what you have thought autism looks like. And then.... I encourage you to throw it out... my hope is that if we get rid of expectations, we can make room for all the gifts God provides through autism. Things are kind of scary right now. Look at all of the crazy things that people did and said in the run up to yesterday’s eclipse. Even if you knew nothing about all of the actual reasons to be worried in the world. the fact that people were having such unhinged reactions to an astronomical event (one that recurs somewhere on the planet every 18 months) is an unmistakable sign. And that’s before you get into personal crises or anything that’s directly impacting people. Of course, the people who were the loudest about the eclipse aren’t special. They were just venting their fears. For the rest of us – the ones who kept our anxieties to ourselves – the people who were spouting nonsense are just the canaries in the coal mine. Because things actually are kind of scary right now. So much has been upended. Or is in flux. We’re left wondering what will happen next. Trying to figure out what we should do. What to do? We’ve got some options. We can stare backward. Desperate to go back to something we thought was normal, something we took for granted. Clinging to how things were. Idealizing it, warts and all. Even though – truth be told – when we were in it, we did nothing but complain about it. We can stare forward. Desperate to control what we don’t understand. Trying to figure out what it all means like Nicodemus in today’s Gospel. In fear of a thousand ways that things could get even worse. Or never happen. Even though – if we’re honest – all we’re doing is making ourselves more and more miserable. Or we can be here. In the present. The only part of time that we can ever experience the way that God experiences all of time. The eternal present. Where everything is possible. Indeed, it’s the only time when anything is possible. The impulse that God has given you to reach out to someone who’s lonely? The only time you can do something about it is in the present. The spirit that God has put in you to help someone who needs help getting prescriptions or groceries? The only time you can do something about it is in the present. If you’re looking for the peace of God in all of this, it starts with things like that. [Continued at 1]

Do you ever take time to acknowledge areas of growth you’ve had and celebrate the good fruits of faith and sanctification in your life? Why or why not? I’m learning to and it has produced so much more gratitude and appreciation for the Father’s loving care in my life. Even in the hard. I had a realization the last few days… My family got hit hard again with a virus this past week and we’ve been pretty sick. To be honest, it seems we’ve been sicker on and off for the last few months than ever before. Constantly needing to cancel and change plans, which has been really disappointing. I’ve not been able to show up in my home and my business the way I want to. In the past, upsets like this to my schedule and plans would have been met with a lot of frustration, resentment, and even anger at times. I’d be a fixer, managing and taking care of everything and everyone without the ability to slow down and rest, unless I got so sick I was forced to. But I’ve learned to respond better. With grace and contentment in the midst of the chaos and inconsistency. I can slow down and rest with my family while taking care of them (and myself!) with more understanding and love. I’ve had this verse on my mind constantly over the past week: “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:11-13 Content in all circumstances. Including sickness and health. I have had so much peace this week, and I know that is 100% the Spirit working in me. I am truly in awe at the way He works in our lives to transform us more and more to be like Him.
