Band-winged Wingwaver (𝘊𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘹𝘺𝘴 𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘦) | Suffolk, UK | June 2023 . Yesterday morning I had no idea that Band-winged Wingwavers existed. Then this little chap advertised its presence by doing a little dance on a handrail, and honestly I think my life has been enhanced a bit. A bit of Googling revealed not only the identity of my new fancily-patterned acquaintance, but that this is a fairly localised species. It seems that the extensive reedswamps and brackish marshes on Suffolk are one of the strongholds for this lovely little fly. Presumably these habitats provide lots of decaying plant matter for the young to eat, though despite the name 'urtica' they don't seem to be associated with nettles. ACHTUNG, doch eher Bohrfliege ! Korrektur folgt … Am Pfingstsonntag wurde uns folgende Darbietung geboten, dazu noch im eigenen Garten ... Ich kannte diese Tierchen bisher nur theoretisch, und das auch nur beim Namen ! Es sind wohl Pfauenfliegen*, die 2006 das erste Mal in Deutschland nachgewiesen wurden. Ursprünglich stammen sie aus Nordamerika. Die Männchen vollführen mit ihren Flügeln diese „Tänze“. Es waren drei Fliegen gewesen, ich weiß nun nicht, ob die dritte am Rande ein dazugehöriges Weibchen gewesen ist, die diese Vorstellung aufmerksam verfolgt hat. Die Lebensweise habe ich gerade erst nachgeschlagen. Diese Fliegen entwickeln sich im morschen Holz und ja, an genau dieser Stelle liegt definitiv sehr altes Totholz, welches schon in sich zusammenfällt. In sowas ist eben echt Leben drin ! Totholzstapel, alte Baumstumpen, etc. einfach stehen lassen. So viele Insekten nutzen diesen (Kleinst)Lebensraum. Käferlarven entwickeln sich darin oft über Jahre und wenn sie schlüpfen, hinterlassen sie wiederum hohle Gänge, die dann wieder neu besiedelt werden, z.B. von Wildbienen, Grabwespen und vielen anderen. Es gibt in Deutschland scheinbar zwei Arten dieser Pfauenfliegen, Callopistromyia annulipes und Callopistromyia strigula. Anhand von Internetfotos sehe ich keine großen Unterschiede. Die erste Art wird deutlich öfter, bzw. fast nur angezeigt, wenn man nach „Pfauenfliege“ sucht. Da sie maximal so 5mm groß werden, ist die Bildqualität dieser Ausschnitte von Handyaufnahmen mehr schlecht als recht, aber bei bewegten Bildern ist das nicht sooo schlimm wie bei Fotos ! I found a new-to-me species yesterday, flaunting its tiny beauty on the edge of a rhododendron petal. Callopistromyia annulipes postures and struts (swipe), moving its wings, which are raised vertically and pointed forward, in a rowing motion. Its resemblance to a peacock's tail is enhanced by blue reflections, so its common name, the peacock fly, is very suitable. Only about an 1/8 inch, it is a species of picture-winged flies and is native to and widespread across North America. It has recently been introduced accidentally to Europe, and is known from Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, Czechia, Austria, Belgium, Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Croatia. C. annulipes often can be seen displaying its outstretched wings on newly fallen trees or logs. Seen from behind, even a bit tattered, the beautiful transparent wings of the common picture-winged fly (Delphinia picta) look like a stained-glass window. But its appearance becomes a bit bizarre from the front (swipe), with a proboscis that looks as if it is wearing a gas mask. This fly feasts almost solely on rotting vegetation, and when it regurgitates its food, it looks like it's blowing a tiny bubble with its mouth. Fly-day Friday! (Or should it be Friday Fly-day?) I was lucky enough to visit the US in 2018 and 2019 I saw some really interesting critters. These were all discovered in the absolute piece of heaven on Earth that was my in-laws garden in Irvington, NY. These little fellas are picture winged flies, and the best way to see them is in action so you can see the peculiar snout like arrangement they have going on. 1.) First spotted, June 2018 2 & 3.) I apparently have delicious limbs, June 2019 4.) Can’t tell if they’re courting or having a territory dispute. Strange fact, courtship of picture winged flies sometimes involves one or more of the partners blowing a bubble from their mouth. One group that I think is underappreciated for its diversity is Diptera, the flies. We're mostly associated with dipterans through the members of the group we love to hate: houseflies, gnats, horseflies, and mosquitoes. But Diptera has been estimated to contain potentially a million species, so it's not all just blood suckers and meal ruiners (if you're weak). I ended up breaking out my camera while at work for these photos of a black onion fly. They belong to the family Ulidiidae, the picture-winged flies. Black onion flies, as could be guessed by the name, associate with both wild and garden varieties of Allium. Uncoincidentally, I happened upon this one in a decent-sized patch of Allium. There are three generations in a year, one of which will overwinter to emerge in the spring. The other two generations hatch, develop into maggots that feed on onion bulbs, pupate, emerge in their adult forms, and mate, all within a couple months. Unsurprisingly, most links on black onion flies focus on their pest status, which appears to be largely inconsequential. Despite their ubiquity in gardens across the US, and the vast distribution of picture-winged flies, their life cycle still isn't fully studied. Antlered Flutter Fly (Toxonevra superba) - This is a species of flutter fly in the family Pallopteridae. Some of its common names are trembling-wing, waving-wing and flutter-wing flies. It is a widely distributed but rare fly, likely due to its size which is about ⅛″ to ¼″ (3 to 6 mm). I could hardly find any information about it. This fly likes moist, shady places and adults are usually found on flowers and low branches of trees and shrubs. Larvae may feed on plant material, or they may prey on the larvae of bark beetles, or both. The males extend and vibrate their wings, a behavior that gives the family Pallopteridae its common name. It likes to wander around slowly, raising and lowering its wings every few seconds to show them off. *All photos are my own.
