🐝A lot of us want to attract bees to our gardens, so it is useful to know that they are naturally attracted to plants in the blue-violet range - clever of them, as flowers in this colour range are known to produce the highest volumes of nectar 💫 Lavender, rosemary, salvia & echium are great examples. You can also attract bees 🐝to your garden by using flowers with splashy or concentric markings ( in plain speak, that means multiple circlular colour markings in their centre). Why? Because these are like a bullseye 🎯, providing a good visual target or landing spot for approaching bees. Osteospermum (cape daisy) is a great example of a plant with these markings. Flowers with open petals and upright stamens for 'easy access' (such as blue cornflowers & borage) are also popular with bees 😍. Another tip for encouraging bees to visit your garden is to plant these types of plants in large drifts or swathes (same thing), as this makes your plants a bit like an airport landing strip 👀, more easily spotted from above than a single plant. It's a low spreading perennial to 30cm with star-shaped golden yellow flowers from April to November. Chrysogonum virginianum has heart-shaped hairy leaves, above which the flowers are held. J - what’s one of the hardest things for me as a very very beginner beekeeper? The smoker! Because we aren’t going into the hive all the time, we don’t need to use the smoker unless we are performing a hive, hive beetle or varroa mite check. It is sometimes so annoying to get the smoker properly smoking and ensuring that it is cool enough to use on the bees! It is something that I feel will get better and more used to the more times we use it. Already we are noticing that if we use the paperbark off our paperbark tree in our yard that it is a better fuel/smoking source than anything else we have tried yet!

Back home after a brilliant week in Manchester for the RHS Urban Show. I got to play pub landlady at the Tip Inn Pub Garden and managed not to say anything too daft on live tv, but my no. 1 highlight was relocating the plants and planters to the Star Inn pub in Salford. The small pub is a cooperative, owned by over 100 people and looked after by some very hardworking locals, many of whom volunteer their time to keep it running. So much so that I didn’t get a chance to take any proper photos as it was being given a good spring clean! The community spirit of the pub was really inspiring, the perfect recipient of the competition held by @manchestereveningnews and @the_rhs I’m looking forward to visiting again and seeing it all settled and in bloom! Garlic is going in! Having limited luck, with rust often taking over, I am trying more hard neck varieties, including an early one. The beds are amended with blood and bone and dynamic Lifter or chicken/sheep pellets, and then kept weed free (as much as I have the energy for 🤷🏼♀️) I so wanted to tear out the zucchini, because at this point I’ve eaten way more than my fair share, but it’s still producing and looking ok. I cleaned up all the old leaves below the fruit, which has made some space for light and warmth and some garlic cloves! A bit of fossicking and I’ve found the odd good sized fat carrot to add to the dinner table (am looking to ferment some too). The creatures are loving the sunny days and the garden is loving the wee bits of rain we do get. I’m so pleased the bees have returned. Today was a very exciting day! The new bee hives were installed by @_beekindhives_. Matt has so much knowledge and passion in what he does and creates these very natural habitats for the bee’s which are not to satisfy peoples greed for honey but to create a successful sustainable environment for the bees to thrive. Which then in turn means that the thousands of plants and trees that we have installed at this project are pollinated for years to come. The hatch at the bottom means the bees can be checked and monitored safely without bee suits as they are not disturbed from above like a generic bee hive which is awesome. Evolution. Finally had a tidy up of the patio. I somehow always end up with about 300 pots of what looks like just soil (but is in fact just pots of soil that used to be plants that have now died!) and all the crap strewn across the ground. Got rid of a lot of it but still a way to go! It’s finally starting to take shape now that I’ve put some plants into the ground.
