Pregnancy Myth 101 You will discover so many myths when you start to find understand and find out about pregnancy & birth. This is one of my favourites that's often used to coerce someone to book an induction ( have experienced this with clients). To date there are no studies/evidence to state that your placenta will just stop working when you reach 40 weeks. Firstly how due dates are calculated is rubbish (you are unlikely to be pregnant on your first day of your last period) to start so your due date at 40 weeks is likely to be wrong. The placenta may go through a process of calcification between 39-42 weeks which is a part of the normal process of a full term placenta and has no clinical signs in a health pregnancy. Calcification during pregnancy prior to term can pose risks to baby and mother/birthing parent BUT it is not the the same as calcification process at full term which is considered a normal process. There is also no evidence to suggest that aging of the placenta is accountable for a small rise in still birth rates post 42 weeks. Conclusion, ask questions and do your research. If you are being told to book an induction due to the age of the placenta/stop working this will either be to coerce you to book an induction based on no evidence to date to support such reasons.
