Yesterday I attended my first-ever pride parade. This is somewhat odd, given that I grew up I a rainbow / queer family in the 1980s and the 1990s. Yet, I was never introduced to the pride events, since in my home region Turku they were organised only 2014 onwards. There were other public demonstrations and events, but my family was not active in these. I, as a 1980s queerspawn, witnessed queer lives, love, and caring more quietly. In the 1990s my queer family visited people's homes and hosted family dinners. As a kid I accompanied my father who met his friends in the only gay bar in town in the weekend afternoons, when the bar functioned as a cafe with dramatically less beer but with the same bears and posters. In the 2000s and the 2010s I lived my life as a queerspawn without paying much attention to this fact. During those years in Finland we saw some progress in legislation concerning queer rights, while there were disappointments too. It wasn't until my father passed away when I turned to my roots and started to realise how much they have (obviously) shaped my existence. While for me queerness has always been "normal" and engraved in my ways of knowing this world, unfortunately in societies at large LGBTIQA+ people are still stigmatised, marginalised, and thus made invisible. Pride parade is a visible intervention. This year the theme of the Helsinki pride week was joy & riot. I take joy in witnessing 100 000 people marching for equal human rights in Helsinki. I uphold the riot by just being a person with a queerspawn identity. Day 20/30 of #consciousenneagramchallenge •• One of the most important things every practice needs to have, that most people forget about, is a reason. A why. A real motivation. •• These three humans make up so much of my motivation. To be honest, when I was solely working on myself for the sake of myself, I got bored. The thought, “I’m enlightened enough,” slowly snuck into my thinking. •• But let me tell you, being in a REAL loving relationship is hard, and it’s even harder when both you and your partner are committed to personal growth (aka calling each other out on your shit). And then parenting is beyond hard, and being an 8 and a step parent makes for a special concoction of trigging in all the deepest ways for me. •• So, I certainly am not “enlightened enough” for this job, but damn do I want to be. Danielle and I have hit a nice stride in our relationship, but to be totally honest, I feel like a failure in the parenting world more days than not. •• I love my kids with my whole heart and I want to show up and be the best possible version of myself for them. Most days, though, I can really only see how my type is getting in the way, how I’m not showing up the way I want. This is why I practice. I practice so each day I can be a better parent to these beautiful children, so I can set an example of what it looks like to live a life fully and intentionally. •• On days when your practice feels far away, what why do you connect with?
