It’s been a busy Easter Sunday 🐣🐰🥚🌼 ☀️ Fuelled with coffee from our local bakery ☕️ we took a wee road trip to Kinloch Rannoch where the phrase “the middle of nowhere” comes from! Taking advantage of the over 50s £17 return rail fare I plotted a route starting at Rannoch Station and walking through to Spean Bridge over 4 days. I was joined by friends Lorna and Claire. Our journey started on Thursday with the train journey from Glasgow to Rannoch Station. There was snow higher up on the hills but our low level route was clear. Ye ha. Within 15mins of leaving the station it started to snow and snow and snow. It didn't stop all day. We were soon walking in ankle deep snow. On reaching Loch Ossian, the Youth Hostel seemed inviting so we headed over to see if there was room at the inn. We were in luck. We had a great night with fellow hostelers and were treated to lots of luxuries like toasted hot cross buns, soft rolls, left over pasta and eggs for breakfast. Today, Friday was a leisurely day with a walk round the loch, keeping an eye out for a nice camp spot along the way. After leaving the hostel in the morning we made a short detour to Corrour train station just for a look. The snow was a lot deeper now as it had snowed on and off all night. We headed round the loch and were treated to spectacular views with the blue sky for most of the day. By the afternoon the snow was on again. Saturday was going to be our longest and hardest day. We left Loch Ossian behind and headed down to Loch Treig. This is where our good paths ended. For the rest of the day it was hard work crossing a lot of streams and bog with the ground conditions being hidden under a thick blanket of snow. My intention was to get to an MBA bothy, the Lairig Leacach, which would give us the option to get indoors and if we were in luck others would be there and have a good fire going. Our luck was in and the bothy was really busy. There’s train station cafés, and then there’s Rannoch train station café. Dippy eggs, spicy red lentil soup, breakfast baps and Scottish smoked salmon filled bagels to name a few of the options. I had midge cake, which is actually lemon drizzle with poppy seeds. What a find for those who hop on and off the train expecting nothing more than a dry sandwich. Per raggiungerla in auto dovrete percorrere la lunga strada che costeggia il Loch Tummel, a nord di Pitlochry ed oltre la Queen's View. Qui, in mezzo alla brughiera, la strada termina nel nulla: una mangiata di case, un hotel, una tearoom e la stazione ferroviaria. Nulla più! A piedi, partendo dalla stazione, si possono raggiungere le sponde del Loch Laidon, un piccolo lago dove a farla da padrona sono pace e tranquillità! We are really pleased to receive planning permission for this new woodland hut, after a lengthy planning process. Sited atop a small hillock in Rannoch, the cabin provides uninterrupted views east across the moor. The West Highland Line railway brings many people to the Rannoch area without the use of cars, and Rannoch Station is used as a base from which they can take the train to Fort William or Mallaig for a day out. However, this has brought with it a demand for somewhere to stay overnight, for which there are very few options at present. The new 2-berth cabin features a shower room, open kitchenette & living room, with rolling ladder access up to a double bed on the mezzanine level, making the most of the large volume space. Due to its tight position within the trees, the cabin will adopt sustainable ground screw foundations to make a light impact on the earth. Digging the drainage and water supply runs will make use of an air-spade to preserve the existing tree roots and direct services through existing clearings. A Red Deer Stag (Cervus elaphus) at Rannoch Station with Rannoch Moor in the background. This was a quick encounter with a beautiful majestic animal who decided to do a pose for me before turning and wandering off into the distance. This site is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Scientific Special Interest (SSSI) which provides this important habitat legal protection ensuring a positive safe future for Rannoch Moor. The site is classed as being in 71% in a favourable condition, with some work still required it is positive to see that 76% is in a favourable recovering condition. These habitats are an important feature of the Scottish countryside and all the Fauna that reside in them such as Cervus elaphus.
