Best Reissue (disclaimer: accompanying audio is a variation of the OG, but as close as we're gonna get in Instaland) Well very conveniently I picked this up at the merch table last night, graciously signed and annointed by Dave himself, and it fits today's challenge like a glove. If I remember rightly, it was only released on cd back in 1993 (correct me if I'm wrong, somebody), making this vinyl reissue extra special indeed. Resplendent in a double gatefold cover, with sleeve notes, lyrics, photos and other goodies to pore over, the sound is rich, warm, velvety and golden. I don’t post thaaat often anymore and I don’t mind how my feed looks all together, but you can bet your sweet butt that at least every 6th post is dedicated to Bruce @springsteen So, welcome to Boss-Time, Vol. 84 on this account.🙂 Today I picked the recent released „Best of“ compilation. Quite fitting choice for today imo since Bruce and the mighty E Street Band are back in Europe. Starting today! You lucky Cardiff people have the best time listening to hits, fan favorites and experiencing it together. I will have to wait a few weeks longer. Anyways, back to the release. Some thoughts. 1. Yes, I went all in and bought every variant. Black, Atlantic blue, highway yellow and red. There’s no difference except for the color. The look when I tell people is filled with disbelief and they definitely question my sanity. That’s alright with me. I don’t expect anyone to understand and I know I am part of the „Why are so many variants“ problem. I can assure you: There’s not one other artist which I‘d do this for. 2. We would have loved to get „Tracks2“ or the set of five unreleased albums, which Springsteen mentioned from time to time, but well, that’s not for me to decide. Every single song on here is already multiple times in my collection, but I wouldn’t miss a Springsteen release for the world. And it is quite calming I am not the only one (@melvitli ) 3. It is impossible to gather 18 songs and call it a Best of when you look into Springsteen’s catalogue. Yet, it will remain a mystery to me why „Girls in their summer clothes“ has made the cut. Perhaps cause summer’s around the corner or for a smooth transition to „Hello sunshine“. It has taken me far, far longer than I expected to spin the first 50 grams of this wool. It's an unusual project: I've had this pencil roving/unspun yarn in my stash for literally 25 years (originally part of a kit to knit a blanket but I don't know where the other two colours wandered off over the years.) I didn't want to knit it so I decided to spin instead. I'm going for "as thin as possible" and consistency, and my plan is to learn how to chain ply. I'm pleased with this first bobbin. #SundaySpins A lot of people have said this already, but let me add my voice to the chorus - it’s super-frustrating to buy a record that the artists expanded after pressing date. The teams around these artists should be doing more to respect the people paying money for the music. Seeing this happen two times in a month was a little much. I feel like we’d all rather wait a few more months for the physical release if that’s what they need, rather than buying the same album twice…or maybe that’s just me. This album absolutely slays, and it’s handily going to be in my top three for the year…but when I compare it to the absolutely STUNNING copy of Act I that arrived in my mailbox two years ago, it’s a deep disappointment. Singing (screaming) "Don't care what they have to say, you shouldn't listen to them anyways..." or "I've held back a wealth of shit, I think I'm going to choke..." gave words to everything I was feeling. The album's title track still sounds like recognition. It reminds you that everyone is hurting, and though their struggles may be different, they're just as hard. At this point, the album takes a turn into an almost theatrical quality. Metal Heart and Sex Is Not The Enemy are two of my favorite tracks on this album, not just because the message needs to be shouted from the roof tops but because they both feel so large. This is amplified by the thematic downturn the next track takes. The album comes at you in waves until you can't help but find yourself swaying with every ebb and flow. In the right conditions (ie. being an angsty 20 year old looking for something to stand for or against), this album can be everything. As a 38 year old woman, it feels like spending time with an old friend. This brings us to the second LP in this release... I can see why the songs weren't included on the album originally. They're all good, they're all Garbage, but they're not all Bleed Like Me. There is a distinct tone shift with the additional songs. It's like listening to a second album, instead of a second half of an album. Still, they hit me in that special place that all Garbage songs seem to hit me. It's a good reminder of the depth of talent in this band, not that anyone would question the talent of Butch, Duke, Shirley, or Steve... As a side note, I am loving everything about their cover of I Just Want To Have Something To Do.
