🔴 THE PENNINE RALLY 🔴 DAY 4 •• Usha Gap to Colne •• Fri 9 June SO. MUCH. CLIMBING. We kicked off this monster day of climbing, heat and emotions with the infamous Oxnop Scar. It is as scary as it sounds. We walked. Rewarded ourselves with a lazy breakfast at Bakewell Café in Askrigg. Cam High Road. My favourite gravel climb of the Pennine Rally (3 miles of 5.5%). It went on and on, but in a good way, tapping it out and getting lost in the slow forward motion. I didn’t miss this checkpoint! Coffee @knacker71 and @outdoorprovisions noodles at the top feat. stunning panoramic views. Yaasss. A definite highlight. We followed the chalky white trails of the Dales Way, still up on high, before making the super fun descent down to Ribblehead Viaduct. The sun was warm and everyone was in good spirits. I stopped to take a photo and suddenly started crying. I was flooded with pure happiness, something I hadn’t really felt properly since Dad died. I then reflected that he would be proud of what I was doing, whilst also slightly bemused. Ice cream and snacks at Ingleton. Moor Lane Climb. Seriously. This steep piece of tarmac stole a small piece of my soul that I will never get back. It was 30 degrees which made it even more savage. I shouted a few sweary words to @louisvk at the top, and he smiled knowingly, insisting that I was enjoying myself, wasn’t I … I’m not sure everyone felt this way, but I thought Salter Fell was really cool. Very exposed, but the views were outstanding again. The rubble descent really tested our hot frayed nerves, but we were soon drinking beer in Slaidburn and starting the all-too-familiar process of deleting the hard stuff from our memories. I then left the others and started day five’s route, enjoying a further 25km onto Colne. Golden hour arrived as I hit Coal Pit Lane, the final gravel climb into the hills, and this section was absolutely magical. The fatigue miraculously disappeared, and I was wrapped up in the wonder of a really wonderful (but hard) day on the bike. Finished the day with a Chinese takeaway in my hotel at 10pm! 🚴🏼♀️ • 114km cycled ⛰️ • 2470m climbed ⏰ • 8.25 hrs ride time, 13.5 hours elapsed .

Glorious day out taking part in the @gloriousgravel Lancashire Gravel epic. Nearly 45 miles and 1500m of climb setting off from Gisburn forest. Some pretty quick tarmac descent some very steep tarmac and gravel climbs and a stunning 17km over Salter fell road. We even managed to finish just before the rain set in 😀. No time to clean the bikes but they did get a hose down before loading into the car. Hopefully get out on them tomorrow for a stint. ✨ The most magical moment on the Pennine Rally was on the evening of day four so it needs a separate post ✨ After a well deserved pint in Slaidburn with the others, Miles and I started the route for day five, another 25km to Colne. It was about 7.30pm and still really warm. The wind was gently rustling the trees, the flowers in the fields were all beautifully lit and their colours were popping, quaint little houses sat perfectly in their picture postcard villages, and despite everything dying around me (Wahoo, phone, lights, legs), I was just brimming with contentment. The number one value I appreciate most in life is freedom. After a conversation with @frikfrak74 a few months ago, I've realised that the thing I enjoy most about cycling is not just exploring and meeting new people, but it's staying out for hours and hours, sunrise to sunset and beyond. And bikepacking lets you do that. If you can pitch a tent... There is something all-consuming and fully absorbing about cycling in nature all day, and it definitely calms my nervous system. Second City Divide - Day 4 - Tan Hill Inn to Worsthorne This was definitely the hardest day. We were treated to an awesome valley along the River Swale before climbing Oxnop Scar Road and dropping into Askrigg. Climbing Cam High Road was made slightly harder by a roaring headwind, and after Danny lost (and then found) his Wahoo on the descent we met Carl at Ribblehead for a pub lunch. He had fixed his bike and was back for some more of the Second City Divide! Some stabby road climbs later and we were climbing Salter Fell in the dark. Carl's bike decided to break again at this point, and he had to go find a train station, again. A fine day, out in the wilds of Lancashire, exploring the old Roman Road, Salter Fell. Salter Fell's off-road trail uses sections of the old Roman Road running from Clitheroe to Lancaster, still visible in parts. The trail is both technical and fast in places, with sweeping views across the moorlands. It's about an hours ride from Manchester, excellent for a weekend ride out. Thanks for the recommendation @_keyser__soze an excellent trial!

gravel diaries >> 003 Parcours I should have known better. ‘Half of it looks pretty flat - should be some easy miles’ I said. Says here ‘it’s an a 3.5 out of 5’. We set out in the rainy mizzle towards Glastonbury Tor to ride just over 100km of tracks and trails around Somerset on Sunday with our friends @gloriousgravel. We never saw the tor through the cloud and rain but the route didn’t disappoint and dished out everything on the menu. Jagged rock gardens pummelling your arms, gnarly roots waiting to catch you out, bends that disappeared before you could grab the brakes, ruts that kept getting deeper until you could go no further, deep pools of mud soup, sinking sands where only fools would venture, swarms of horse flies waiting for their next meal, deep gorges to sap the remaining strength from your legs, and the famous Mendips hills lining up to challenge all-comers. There’s no such thing as a 3.5 out of 5 ride. We do not ride a number. Gravel Diaries 001 I had been thinking about doing some ‘gravel diaries’ to combine some of the best shots from recent adventures and some stories of the day. And then before I even got going feckin’ Instagram have pulled carousels. Harumph. No doubt all part of some evil Facebook ploy. So instead I am going to have to do it one picture at a time. The Forest of Bowland is a place I had neither heard of nor ever visited. I didn’t even know where it was until last week. If you imagine wide expanses of deserted moorland, wild winds, rugged fells, relentless hills, and rock garden trails you’ll be getting close. Oh and no Forest. At Ieast I didn’t see one. It’s pretty special and contains both the Pennine Way and the Salter Fell Way too. If you don’t know where it is. Look it up - it’s well worth the trip. As for my gravel diaries.
