I am always up for a musical or rock opera. This by far is one of the strangest I have seen since Repo! The Genetic Opera. Pretty sure the strangeness comes from the collaboration that is Leos Carax and Sparks. I can thank Edgar Wright for giving me the grip I needed on this film. If it weren’t for him doing a documentary on Sparks, I would have just been utterly confused in the musical style. The music that Sparks brings to this film does not hinder it. The performances from Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard, and Simon Helberg are fantastic. It sounds like a strange pairing with a musical but it works. Let us also not forget that this is a musical/rock opera about a comedian and an opera singer that fall in love, get married, and have a child. Now that isn’t the whole picture, but you get the start. Oh wait, the kid is a puppet throughout the film. Yea a puppet. The child in this CAN SING and I am not kidding. That kid was amazing. Go into this film with hesitation. This is not a film for everyone. Musicals are not for everyone. Puppets aren’t for everyone. You will either really enjoy this or really wonder what you did in your life to sit through this. Either way, it's an experience. #annette #adamdriver #marioncotillard #amazonprime #simonhelberg #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

I have wanted to see Hollywood provide us with a good noir for a while now. In a world of remakes, reboots, and rehashing; it’s just a genre that we don’t see often. I enjoyed the world that was created. Imagine a world where a city is underwater because global warming has taken its toll on the world. It sets an interesting stage for such beautiful sets. Though, the underlining premise of why the rising waters play part in the film is unnecessary. Had you removed the flooding from the story and tweaked two or three things, you would have never known. The biggest thing that drew me to this film other than getting something original was the cast. Jackman, Ferguson, and Newton are always on their game and this film is no exception. Though the cast was firing at 100%, I think the story is what pulls them down. Ferguson does a great job with her character but the character is so sloppy it’s hard to pin down who she really is. Yes, I know that plays into everything going on, but it just didn’t completely land. Give me voice-over Jackman any day. If you like semi-futuristic noir, then you will probably enjoy this. It has it’s problems but nothing that takes you completely out of the film. #hughjackman #rebeccaferguson #hbo #hbomax #reminiscene #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

I wanted to like this film more than I did. I did. It just felt so clumsy and so messy. I mean sure, messy can be good sometimes, I just don’t think this was one of those times. I like John David Washington. He looks like he gives 110% every time. Of course, there are times you need to sympathize with him but man it feels like he was cranking it up to eleven sometimes. Why was Alicia Vikander even in this? Talk about a waste of good talent. Her character was so throw away, you could have easily substituted anyone in this role. I think the bones to a good film were here and perhaps a couple more passes on the script could have helped. The talent was there but was completely mishandled. If you're a fan of John David Washington, give it a go. Just know this is not his best work! #beckett #netflix #johndavidwashington #aliciavikander #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

Wow. Why did it take them having to make a sequel to finally watch this film? First and foremost, Stephen Lang is a beast! But I digress. This is not my first run into a Fede Alvarez film. I stand by his remake of Evil Dead, and his visually bizarre yet wholly satisfying series Calls is fantastic. It's not news that Allah z has a style and knows how to tell a story. This is no exception. As I made the point before, Stephen Lang crushes in this and I cannot wait to see where we go from here. Lang does a great job of providing emotion, terror, sympathy, and excitement with very little dialog. He gives you the proof on screen why you never underestimate anyone. Alvarez brings back Evil Dead star Jane Levy who is enjoyable in this film. Now she plays the typical final girl so you tend to expect certain things to go in a certain order but overall she keeps us on our toes. Daniel Minnette comes in as an unsure character. He knows this thing might be too big for them but still goes with it. It's all about getting out of that friends zone. It doesn't end well. Minnette services the character. Nothing new comes of his character other than being the counterpart to Levy. This is a solid film. You will at times feel like you are forgetting to breathe. The tension rides high with this one. Between the acting, direction, and score, you are transported and are a part of these peoples lives. #stephenlang #janelevy #dontbreathe #horror #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

This had the makings and baseline for something great. And boy does it miss the mark. This is a swift 75 minutes. Oh but it will take you half of that to even get to the “spooky” stuff. The pacing of this film is just so chaotic, it’s mind blowing they can finish this up in such a short time. The premise of the spirit has the potential but then the make up makes you feel that the next door third grader helped put the make up on. The location was beautiful and had more character than our actual ghost or tourists. I started this wondering why there was no love for this when I started. By the time I was done, I felt I wished I had that time back. #theresort #horror #film #newrelease #instagram #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

Does this film bring anything new to the heist genre. Not really. It is a serviceable film. In true heist films you have a group of people coming together with various skills to take on what seems like an impossible task. Lets break into the most unbreakable vault ever created by man. Freddie Highmore is given the task of shouldering the film as the “engineer.” The one who is going to make the impossible, possible. Highmore does a good job with what he is given. We know he can sound smart but he just didn’t get the dialog to back it up. If you like heist films, you will probably enjoy this. If you want a lot of depth, it is kind of shallow. You see the twist coming. It’s not Ocean’s Eleven. #thevault #freddiehighmore #netflix #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

This film is definitely worth the watch. The two kids really do shoulder this film at their age. This is your typical kids get kidnapped and now they need to figure out how to escape and survive. There are a few things that are reminiscent of other horror films. Some may not like it, but the homage to The Shining was spot on. There are a couple good twists I did not see coming. I knew nothing of this film going into it. I do feel that the reason why these kids were being kidnapped was kind of unnecessary. Cant you just make the kidnappers crazy lunatics? Do you have to make them molesters? It felt kind of forced. For the sake of story telling, I am going to hope that some of the stuff that happens with these kids are written in the sense of “I’m a child and I panicked.” There were a few instances of me telling these kids through the television what they did wrong. Overall, honestly a strong kidnap and escape film. #theboybehindthedoor #shudder #streaming #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

I shouldn’t like this right? I mean it’s a Disney film based on a park ride. Are we going to have five installments of this as well? This film opens with Metallica. That’s right, Metallica. What in the hell am I in for? They use an instrumental and orchestrated version of Nothing Else Matters, and it works. Honestly where and when it is used, it works. In a portion piece. Weird I know. Casting is beyond amazing personally. Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson have great chemistry and I would love to see them work together again. Blunt’s character Lily is accompanied by her brother MaxGregor played by Jack Whitehall who is perfect as the fish out of water. Jesse Plemons and Edgar Ramirez are great villains. Ramirez totally has that Pirates of the Caribbean feel to him. Plemons just crushes. Overall this was way better than I expected it to be. The story had its moments but I think the cast made up for it. #junglecruise #dwaynejohnson #emilyblunt #jesseplemons #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

As like everyone else, I have a love/hate relationship with M Night. He can make absolutely great films and then there are the not so great ones. Old for me seems kind of in the middle. I am not familiar with the source material that this is loosely based on. We have a beach, some people of various backgrounds, and something weird going on. In true M Night fashion, we have our twists and turns. Most of these you can kind of see coming as well as what you knew just from the trailer. I do think there were some solid performances. I think Alex Wolff has a huge career ahead of him. I am not sure if this film will do anything for it. It almost feels like he did such a great job in hereditary that the studio thought, hey why not. Give me Rufus Sewell any day. I have enjoyed him since Dark City. The film gives you an interesting spin and I enjoyed how they ended it but it was hard to be invested in so many different characters. #mnightshyamalan #oldmovie #alexwolff #rufussewell #old #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

Interesting film. We get this film courtesy of France. Going in, I didn't know it was a French subtitled foreign language film. That being said, the subtitles were not distracting. Something I thought might be the case only because with a horror movie, you want to make sure you Dont miss anything. The Candyman reference is there in a sense. Summon a spirit by saying it's name a few times. It's been done. I do respect that this lore was based on actual Moroccan folklore. This did give us a bit of a fresh take. The actresses were fine. I probably liked the little brother the most. Most performances just seemed a bit to on the nose. That spirit when it gets angry is UGLY! Is it worth watching? Maybe. I mean if you have seen Candyman, then you kind of know how it is going to play out. Some of the kills are kind of cool. #shudder #kandisha #streaming #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

This film feels a bit of a mashup of genres. We get the sick family drama, we get the terrorists hijacking an airplane, and we get a vampire flick. The chemistry that this mother/son have is fantastic, especially towards the end. Sometimes it’s hard for child actors to hit their mark but damn if this kid crushes it. Are there parts of this that fee long and drawn out, yes! It could have been cleaned up in spots and you wouldn’t have lost anything. I got a real 30 Days of Night feel with the creature design and overall effect of the vampires. Overall it’s a good watch that keeps you wanting to see what happens next. It’s nice to Netflix bringing over the foreign films for us to experience. #netflix #bloodredsky #streaming #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

I love me some Tobin Bell but he really didn’t get to bring anything to this film other than that iconic voice. This film doesn’t feel much like a period piece set in the ‘80s. Sure. Some of the costumes and music put you there, but not for that, could you tell? I think this is only set in the ‘80s so you have justification for the rotary phone. If set in present day, these teenagers wouldn’t know how to operate it. A few jump scares and some good creepy make up but other than that just kind of there. #thecall #tobinbell #linshaye #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

I swear some people just like to nit pick everything. Is this film great? No, it has it’s problems. But you know what? I had a lot of fun watching it. I love seeing a kick-ass Kate Beckinsale. Like everyone else, I am reminiscent of the Underworld films and Crank. Can this be compared to Crank absolutely. At least in the vein of electro-shock style therapy. What is great about this film is it keeps pace and is short, sweet, and to the point. It doesn’t overstay it’s welcome. This film is beautiful to look at, especially the first act. I do think that the look took precedence over story telling. Most of the shots were stunning. Does it follow many of the horror tropes? Yes. But it really is in the title. It was enough to keep me engaged. I did feel invested in some of the characters, some others not so much. This is where the script was lacking. So many things that should have been ironed out. Yes, during the third act all I could see was Midsommar. Nobody will match Pugh, however Lutz puts up a valiant effort. #aclassichorrorstory #horror #horrormovies #midsommar #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

This film is fun. It has a lot of potential. I just think it had something and just didn’t stick the landing. For one, I have serious problems believing Lena Headey was Karen Gillan’s mother. Don’t get me wrong, she held her own but it just wasn’t as believable. Rounding out the heroins is Carla Gugino, Michelle Yeoh, and resident badass Angela Bassett. These ladies had some great sequences while also being ill used. They could been so much more. The set pieces are beautiful and the style is definitely noticeable. This film seemed like a bigger film than the director was ready for. If Chad Stahelski got his hands on the action pieces, this film would have crushed. Sorry to say but this guy really has created a good standard of which films are compared to. #netflix #gunpowdermilkshake #karengillan #lenaheadey #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

This film is a great conclusion to a great trilogy. I really hope that we get to see more like this from Netflix. This final chapter takes us back to 1666 where we get to see the origin of the curse and meet Sarah Fier. The film brings the cast of both previous installments to play their historical counterparts of the time. This is pulled of exceptionally well as I don’t think anyone really felt out of place. This really does become a two part film in that we get to see the origin in 1666 but then are pushed back to 1994 to show how what has been learned and how this will be used to break the curse. I would recommend this trilogy to anyone. #fearstreet1666 #netflix #rlstine #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

The best Friday the 13th I have ever seen. This is a solid camp slasher even with out the witchcraft elements. The witchcraft only adds to this story and makes it make sense. Solid cast. Sadie Sink crushes in this and shows that she can shoulder a horror film. I don’t think we have seen what she is even capable of. Emily Rudd and the rest of the cast are great as well. The supporting cast really lives in character stereotypes they were cast in. The soundtrack. Damn the soundtrack. This soundtrack is amazing. As someone who’s formidable years took place in the ‘90s, there was so much throwback. Now is this film perfect? No. Did it make me smile and did I have a good time watching this? Yes! The film absolutely oozes Scream vibes, especially right out the gate with the opening sequence. Sprinkle in a little Friday the 13th and maybe even a little Blair Witch lore. Honestly for what this is, being adapted from YA material, I think it’s executed for the most part pretty well. I enjoyed most of the characters and the odd story. It’s nice to see what feels like a semi-new take on a slasher flick. Lastly, that soundtrack is AMAZING. A pretty solid film with such a simple premise. Why does Hollywood try so hard? Knowing that great films like this exist tells me they are capable. These films are like if jigsaw had a competitive nature. I enjoyed this movie as much as I did it’s predecessor. The set pieces are beautiful and a lot of detail goes into each “game.” As this film ends, I do want to see where it keeps going. The fun thing about this franchise is that you really can go almost anywhere with it. This is what excites me. Returning characters serve well, especially in the final act. And I do question, if I didn’t see it, did it happen? I will say for being a “Tournament of Champions,” a couple characters do not get the justice they are deserving. Lastly, I want to yell at Sony! Who ever cut their trailer needs to be fired. The film only felt predictable due to seeing scenes in the trailer and piecing together the progress of the film! #escaperoom #escaperoomtournamentofchampions #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

I had a lot of fun with this. Is LeBron’s acting perfect? No but he is a basketball star, not an actor. He is better than Jordan. Yea. I said it. I go into this film enjoying the original even though it’s not great. This one hits on many of the same beats with its problems. These are problems I can honestly over look. I enjoyed the fact the gave us a new twist on how we are introduced to the Looney Tunes. And hey, these last couple of weeks of releases have all been about family and this is no exception. I really enjoyed the animation as well as the cameos both fictional and actual. The soundtrack to this just doesn’t have that same Jock Jams feel as the original, but still feels in place with this film. #spacejam #lebronjames #looneytunes #movies #movie #film #cinema #movies2021 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #cinefilecommunity #cinephilecommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review

Movies 2021 - 58. My Octopus Teacher (2020; directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed) 🌮🌮🌮 1/2 (3 1/2 tacos) Listen, I understand that we all have favorites during awards season and the natural response to cheering on our favorites is to lay into the competition. It is a sports mentality. However, since so many movie people aren’t necessarily sports people, we have to get our bloodlust out somehow. This year, what better victim that the simple, beautiful, haunting nature documentary My Octopus Teacher, a film about a man who kind of falls in love with an octopus.   Yes. That last statement is a bit misleading.   The film chronicles a man, Craig Foster, who feels as if his life is kind of disconnected from everything. Nearing rock bottom and looking for some kind of peace, he seeks solace in snorkeling. When he stumbles upon a young octopus, everything changes. For the next year, he visits the octopus every day, observing the creature’s behavior and challenges. He is there for the entire life cycle of this misunderstood creature, and that interaction changes his life forever.   My Octopus Teacher is a gorgeous study of the ocean and the life it holds. The color of the water and everything underneath pops. It’s not just the visuals that help to make this film gorgeous. There is a sentiment here that really hits home about appreciating animals and respecting and loving all of the creatures of the earth. Like Foster, many people form a stronger bond with animals than humans. For me, as much as I love the film, I do have two qualms with Foster’s stance. One, he calls one moment with the octopus the greatest day of his life. This seems to be a clear indicator that he doesn’t quite see his son in as favoring light as most parents do. Two, for someone who loves this octopus so much, Foster does nothing to save it from harm. Movies 2021 – 57. The New Mutants (2020; written by Josh Boone and Knate Lee; directed by Josh Boone) 🌮🌮 1/2 (2 ½ tacos) A group of teenagers with special abilities find themselves under attack. Trapped in this weird development/production/release limbo really did a number on The New Mutants, a hotly anticipated blend of superhero movies and horror. The film already had an uphill battle before it was even released. When it finally hit theaters, the world was in a global pandemic which meant that audiences certainly would not be flocking to see the film. Reviews were mixed, at best, which is completely fitting for this disappointing genre experiment that shows flashes of promise in the midst of its otherwise so-so execution. The New Mutants is set in the X-Men universe, featuring young teenagers who are just beginning to develop their mutant abilities. They are raw around the edges. Untrained. Unfocused. Uncontrolled. They are kept at a mental health facility to try to gain control of their powers and find their ways out of their grief and trauma. However, while kept under lock and key, a dark force threatens to destroy them. Had this movie stuck closer to the conceit of an X-Men horror film, I think it really could have been something special. However, when things changed and this had to become a bit more typical, it became just that. The New Mutants finds itself somewhere between the quality of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: Apocalypse. There are things here that work and are very entertaining (how cool is it to see Cannonball on-screen? Sure, he’s super emo, but it is still Cannonball!), but it never becomes the kind of superhero movie you feel completely connected to. Perhaps that is because this movie seems to wallow in half-swings. There are moments of horror. There are moments of superhero excitement. There are moments of emotional connectivity. The film, as a whole though, just feels about halfway there. The New Mutants isn’t completely devoid of entertainment. I did want to know what was happening and how it all was going to end. {{CONTINUED IN COMMENTS}}

Movies 2021 - 56. The Dissident (2020; directed by Bryan Fogel) 🌮🌮🌮🌮 (4 tacos) Documentaries that help illuminate a truth are some of the most exciting documentaries to watch. I knew of the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but I didn’t know the details of what had happened and the lengths to which the cover-up was attempted. Icarus director Bryan Fogel’s latest, The Dissident, is a thrilling and heartbreaking expose on how a journalist fighting for the truth fell victim to the murderous ways of a corrupt ruler. In Saudi Arabia, speaking out against the ruling structure of the country is seen as a treasonous act. Fogel clearly illustrates a history of oppression by the Saudi government against their enemies, a motive for why they would go after Khashoggi and other dissenting voices, a plan of attack, how it is carried out, how they attempted to cover it up, and how they got away with it (with what certainly seems like some assistance by 45 himself; if there wasn’t aide in the cover-up, there certainly was a slap on the wrist, followed by a weapons sale). I want to reiterate how important it is to remember that the actions of a government are not always a reflection of those governed. If a governing body acts against one of its people, this doesn’t mean that all of those governed are in favor of this. In fact, there are people actively trying to fight against it. That is the entire purpose of this documentary. Khashoggi was in vocal opposition to the Saudi government and he was killed for his words. People continue to fight, putting their lives on the line to speak out against a corrupt force of power. Perhaps, though, the will of the people will eventually lead to the kind of change needed and a deeper sense of freedom for those living there. #movies #movie #film #cinema #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #filmcommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #filmreviews #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review #hifromsd #movies2021 #southdakotafilmsociety #thedissident

TV SERIES 2021 - It’s time to catch-up with some quick TV reviews. I have watched a lot more television this year than in years prior. It’s kind of fun to play catch up on these series. There are some shows that are still in progress that I will review later (which is also a ton of fun in this new world of binge-drop and watch). Just know, I am probably a little more generous in my TV ratings. If a show hooks me and makes super excited to see where it is going to go next, it will probably get a high review. Let’s get started! 6. The Boys Seasons 1 and 2 (🥑; showrunner: Eric Kripke) The Boys is an absolute blast of abhorrence. What if superheroes were assholes? This series takes that ball and runs with it, making it a gory, vulgar delight. 7. Trying (🌮🌮🌮; showrunner: Andy Wolton) Trying is a fun, sweet-hearted dramedy about a modern couple looking to adopt. It has laughs and cries in all the right places. It has some lulls, but is overall effective. 8. The Morning Show (🌮🌮🌮🌮; showrunner: Kerry Ehrin) The Morning Show may hit audiences over their heads with a lack of subtlety towards its message, the cast does a phenomenal job of still bring the story to life with confidence and charisma. Billy Crudup steals the show. 9. Mythic Quest (🌮🌮🌮🌮; showrunner Rob McElheney) Mythic Quest is a super fun look behind the scenes of the gaming industry. It feels like a more A-story focused, slightly meaner-spirited cousin to Community. Of course I am in. 10. Warrior Seasons 1 and 2 (🥑; showrunner: Jonathan Tropper) From the writings of Bruce Lee, Warrior is so much my jam. Watching this now in a time where Asian Americans and immigrants are on the receiving end of racial persecution and violence, watching this group fight back feels oh so good. Great action sequences and engaging story help this series shine. {{CONTINUED IN COMMENTS}}

Movies 2021 - 55. Thunder Force (2021; written and directed by Ben Falcone) 🌮 1/2 (1 1/2 tacos) Two estranged friends become superheroes in a world where supervillains exist. I’ll keep this one short and... well... short. I will say this about the latest pairing between Melissa McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone: I did genuinely laugh a couple of times at a few of the jokes and it is — despite the low grade — far better than 2020’s pox upon humanity Hubie Halloween. Still, Thunder Force is a movie in need of a third party willing to tell McCarthy and Falcone when to say when. There are moments where you can feel the comedic snake bite its own tail and absolutely refuse to let go until it rips its scales and flesh to bloody bits. Moments play too long and with McCarthy and Falcone heading this thing, you know jokes will go too far past funny. The beginning of this film is almost uncomfortable to watch as McCarthy reaches for jokes like she is a three year old reaching for a cookie atop the refrigerator. For someone so danged talented, you hate to see it. Falcone is also a talented comic performer, writer, AND director. He truly is. He just needs a ruthless editor and maybe someone who yells, “Stop!” when McCarthy veers too far off course. I haven’t mentioned Octavia Spencer yet, who is doing the best she can with this. Same with Jason Bateman who makes the most out of sheer ridiculousness. Thunder Force is dumb and overstuffed, but I can’t hate it for making me laugh a bit. #movies #movie #film #cinema #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #filmcommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #filmreviews #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review #hifromsd #movies2021 #southdakotafilmsociety

Movies 2021 - 54. Quo Vadis, Aida? (2020; written and directed by Jasmila Zbanic) 🌮🌮🌮🌮 (4 tacos) A translator struggles to save her family and refugees from an invasion. You ever bump up the rating of a review because you accidentally gave one movie a half a taco higher you meant to? So as to keep Quo Vadis, Aida? at least on the same level as News of the World, I am rating it 4 tacos as I “enjoyed” it just a little bit more. Enjoyed, however, is not the right word. Quo Vadis, Aida? may compete directly with The Father as one of the most depressing movies of 2020. While of course the difference between the two is subject and storyline, Quo Vadis, Aida? has the advantage of a suspenseful, focused storyline that leaves audiences completely shattered.  Using the true story of the Serbian army invasion of the town of Srebrenica as starting point, Quo Vadis, Aida? follows Aida, a translator working for the UN to help shelter refugees. When the Serbian army attempts to crash the secured facility, Aida races against time to get her family to safety under the threat of violence.  Make no mistake, this film is a tough sit. With Aida being our eyes in the film, we really feel the stress and strain of her struggle. Every obstacle she faces. She is put through the emotional wringer and actress Jasna Djuricic feels on the brink of collapsing at any given moment. Somehow, she steels herself from one conflict to another. This is one of the best overlooked performances of the last year, without question.   Once Quo Vadis, Aida reaches its conclusion, the viewer feels completely drained. It is tough to accept that such atrocities are committed on this planet. To see them acted out and to feel the impact of them is almost a necessary exhaustion. It serves as a reminder of what cinema is capable of. While of course films can be entertaining and emotional, artistic expressions, they can also tell important stories from other parts of the world and help provide an understanding of what struggles humanity continues to endure.

Movies 2021 - 53. News of the World (2020; written by Paul Greengrass and Luke Davies; directed by Paul Greengrass) 🌮🌮🌮🌮 (4 tacos) A former soldier must take a young girl back home to her family. For most, comparing Paul Greengrass’s latest, News of the World, to the oft-maligned 1997 film, The Postman, might be an insult. But someone who actually enjoyed that Kevin Costner flick, it’s a very earnest compliment. Focusing on the storytelling and adventurous journey of Captain Kidd, Greengrass is able to tell a film that is both entertaining and emotionally connective.   Tom Hanks plays the good Captain as he travels the country, delivering the news from large publications to smaller town. Along the way, he encounters a kidnapped young girl whose captors have been killed. Kidd tasks himself with returning the girl to her only living relatives, but must face the treacherous settings of a post-Civil War United States to get her there.  Hanks is, of course, the glue that holds this thing together. You have to expect this kind of foundational performance from Hanks these days. He is, in my opinion, one of the most reliable performers working today who, while certainly comfortable in a particular niche, isn’t afraid to branch outside of that comfort zone for a role. Here, while Hanks certainly adheres to his “America’s Dad,” trademark, he is also given a gruff and tough exterior as a frontiersman who has fought through war and is forever changed because of it. Another stand out performance-wise is the great Helena Zengel as Johanna. It’s almost cliché to say that people are nervous about child actors in roles of great difficulty, but it is an understandable apprehension. Zengel, however, quickly eliminates any of that. She plays the role of kidnapped child emotionally stuck between two vastly different worlds to perfection. Her performance in this film is easily one of the best child performances this year, so much so that it is on the level of best supporting performer of all ages.  {{CONTINUED IN COMMENTS}}

In honor of today’s episode of Let’s Taco ‘Bout featuring @arlindapeacock, here is my rewatch review of... THE REHEAT 2021 - 15. Inception (2010; written and directed by Christopher Nolan) WILL IT GUAC? Not quite. Back in 2010, Inception was pretty much a cultural phenomenon. It showed the Christopher Nolan was capable of doing blockbusters that didn’t feature Batman. Not only that, it showed that he still had a knack for telling brain-bending tales. Just like everyone else, I absolutely adored Nolan’s trippy breakaway smash and everything it did visually. Over the course of the decade, however, I kind of fell off of it. Nolan’s ascent and his personal opinions on how movies should be viewed may have soured me, but also, with the amount of quality films produced throughout the decade, Inception wasn’t one that stuck with me as more than mere brain candy. Getting to rewatch it, though, for the first time in a few years, Inception proves to be a visual marvel. It is gorgeous to behold with stunning visual effects that absolutely hold up. The plot may get a little too trippy and twisty for its own good sometimes, but it is still an engaging watch. I made a comment that while the cast here does a really good job of telling the story, no one delivers a knock-out performance. I don’t think this is a slight against the film. I think in a movie like this, you need a reliable cast who is able to help tell this story effectively. Everyone here is doing just that, from Leonardo DiCaprio, to Joseph Gordon Levitt, to Elliott Page, Marion Cotillard, Ken Watanabe, and Tom Hardy. It’s partially because of this ensemble that Inception is still engaging over a decade later. Christopher Nolan may have already been on the map when Inception hit theaters, but its release made him a deserved, can’t miss, household name. In honor of today’s Let’s Taco ‘Bout with @chillwitcharles, here is my rewatch review of JFK: THE REHEAT 2021 - 14. JFK (1991; written by Zachary Sklar and Oliver Stone; directed by Oliver Stone) DOES IT GUAC? So close. To me, JFK is a pretty foundational part of my movie-loving history. It was one of the first real adult dramas I saw in theaters and it sparked an obsession for me. It may have been the first movie I watched that showed movies can be more than entertainment; that they can be informational and serve a purpose to help shed light on something of prominence. While perhaps the validity of a lot of the ideas expressed in JFK may be debatable, the core of what happened onscreen is based in fact: in 1968, New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison brought charges against a wealthy businessman that he aided in a conspiracy to assassinate President John F. Kennedy. The film became a cultural phenomenon and also helped get litigation passed to release secret government documents surrounding the assassination. I remember my love for this movie led me to writing my own book. Sure, it was a legal pad with pencil scrawls that basically was me copying paragraphs from books like “High Treason” or “On the Trail of the Assassins,” but it certainly felt like I was writing my own book to contribute to the conversation. For a fourth or fifth grader, I had lofty ambitions. Aside from nostalgia, the movie still holds up. Kevin Costner isn’t the best when it comes to nailing accents, but he portrays Garrison as a noble everyman, dedicated to uncovering the truth. The rest of the cast is a veritable who’s who of talent, including Tommy Lee Jones, Joe Pesci, Gary Oldman, Sissy Spacek, Kevin Bacon, John Candy, Donald Sutherland, Michael Rooker, Laurie Metcalf, etc, etc, etc. JFK may not still be regarded with the importance and reverence it was upon its initial release, but it is still an affecting drama that certainly calls into question a nation’s trust towards their government involving one of the greatest political tragedies of our time. Movies 2021 - 51. The Father (2020; written by Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller; directed by Florian Zeller) 🌮🌮🌮 (3 tacos) A father refuses help from his daughter as he ages and encounters changes to his health. Every awards season, there are a handful of films that instantly get categorized as “Oscar Bait.” I always think of these films as stuffy; ones that are either based off of a true story, or are a literary adaptation, or are focused on some kind of hot button medical, social, economical, or political issue. These films are usually well-acted and well-constructed, but more often than not, play it very safe. Despite some creative risk-taking, The Father still feels like an awards season bait movie. While I respected the story and ideas it attempted to convey, it still wasn’t something that struck a particular chord with me. Maybe that is because it still felt a bit too stuffy. Anthony Hopkins plays Anthony, leading a reliable and consistent ensemble in this drama about a man living with Alzheimer’s/Dementia. The way the film unfolds is fascinating as we seem to be experiencing life as Anthony sees it. To explain that any further would take away from part of the surprise of the film. It is a creatively ambitious method of storytelling that has obviously paid off for everyone involved. It is also bleak and haunting, at times making The Father a low-key psychological horror film. Still, though, while effective, something about this film still feels tedious and disingenuous. The performances feel like performances and for a 90-minute movie, this film feels like it goes on forever. I get that my opinion on this is quite to the contrary of most other film critics, but that usually seems to be the case with me come Oscar season. There is one that everyone loves that I struggle getting on board with. I wish I could bang the drum for Hopkins, calling this one of the greatest performances of his career, but I’m just not in that camp. I respect everything The Father sets out to do and just how personal and painful this film feels, but it isn’t one I feel the need to revisit or recommend to anyone outside of award season completists.

Movies 2021 - 50. Godzilla Vs. Kong (2021; written by Eric Pearson and Matt Borenstein; directed by Adam Wingard) 🌮🌮🌮 1/2 (3 1/2 tacos) King Kong must defend humanity from an angry Godzilla. After being thoroughly disappointed in 2018’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, I was slightly apprehensive when I learned the next film in the “Monsterverse” would be a King Kong/Godzilla mash-up featuring the two titans going head to head. However, when the trailer hit the internet, everything changed and I became super excited. While I do enjoy Godzilla, I have yet to be let down by a King Kong movie. Even the 1970s Dino De Laurentiis-produced, Jessica Lange and Jeff Bridges starrer is a real treat, and Kong: Skull Island is an absolute action-packed delight. While excited, I was still afraid. My fears were that it was an incomprehensible mess like KOTM, and not the fun carnage of Skull Island or even the sleek storytelling of 2014’s Godzilla. About an hour into Godzilla Vs. Kong, all of my fears were cast aside as the monster mega-battle provides a clear, coherent giant monster showdown that somehow allows you to care for AT LEAST ONE human character.  Godzilla Vs. Kong is set 47 years after the events of Skull Island, and five after King of the Monsters. Kong has been kept isolated in a Skull Island simulation, where he has been studied and sheltered from Godzilla, the lone surviving titan who serves to protect the Earth from further monstrous threats. Suddenly, without warning, Godzilla turns on humanity and begins attacking. Scientists believe that the only one who can protect the world from an angry Godzilla is the mythic Kong. And then the beasts battle.  {{CONTINUED IN COMMENTS}}

Movies 2021 - 49. Can’t Buy Me Love (1987; written by Steve Rash; directed by Michael Swerdlick) 🌮🌮🌮 1/2 (3 1/2 tacos) A nerdy high schooler rents a popular girl to pose as his girlfriend so he can also become popular. Of all of the 1980s movies I have seen, I am very surprised that I somehow I missed Can’t Buy Me Love all of these years. With Patrick Dempsey experiencing such a resurgence in popularity throughout the 00s, I figured this would have been something I bumped up my list. But you know how it goes. There are a ton of movies and new ones come out all the time. However, after a deep dive through the available comedies currently on HBOMax, I decided it was time to finally kickback and relax with Dempsey’s quest for teenage popularity. I am pleased to report that this movie was an absolute delight. Don’t get me wrong: there are things here that are completely cringe-inducing. From the liberal use of the “r-word” to Dempsey’s Ronald Miller becoming a gaslighting misogynist as soon as he has a taste of popularity, it is a pretty quick reminder that what played for laughs over 30 years ago doesn’t quite hit the same anymore. What does help the film, though, is that there are consequences for bad behavior. Characters work to change and be better, which may lead to an unrealistic resolution but still makes the film all the more entertaining for it. Can’t Buy Me Love thrives more on the chemistry between the members of the cast rather than their acting abilities. Dempsey is a joy, and so is the late Amanda Peterson, but the rest of the teenage ensemble is better as the sum of their parts instead of the parts themselves. Behaviors are exaggerated in only the ways they can in an 80s movie. Gestures and lines are over-delivered. Still, there is something charming about going back to this world. The movie is a funny look at high school living that actually has something to say about the cost of popularity and realizing who your friends actually are. I can now safely say that Can’t Buy Me Love deserves its place in the teen comedy pantheon of the 1980s.

Movies 2021 - 48. Bad Trip (2021; directed by Kitao Sakurai) 🌮🌮🌮 1/2 (3 1/2 tacos) Two friends take a cross-country misadventure on a quest for true love. While the concept behind Bad Trip may have been pulled off before – and better – that doesn’t take away from the fact that this recent film released by Netflix is still an entertaining time. It isn’t always just the pranks that make movies like this successful: it is the reaction of the witnesses around the performers. Here, watching people react in absolute shock and dismay at the things going on around them adds to the joy the film. We know how the performers can pull this stuff off. First, Eric Andre and Lil Rel Howery are famous, but not household names yet, so they can do these things and not be instantly recognized. Second, Tiffany Haddish is stunning, but adopting the guise of an escaped convict, she is almost unrecognizable and able to get away with some wild behavior. So with our three main stars, we can see how they can pull this off, but it is the extremes of their pranks that still make the audience scratch their heads in a “how did they do that?” fashion. Bad Trip is a perfect distraction movie that is funny and somehow both really stupid and really smart. It takes a lot of comedic cajones to pull something like this off and everyone involved seems to have those in abundance. #movies #movie #film #cinema #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #filmcommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #filmreviews #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review #hifromsd #movies2021 #southdakotafilmsociety #badtrip

THE REHEAT 2021 - 12. Borat: Subsequent Movie Film (2020; directed by Jason Woliner) WILL IT GUAC? Not quite. The return of Sasha Baron Cohen as Borat is a welcome one. When a gimmick has been played as frequently and to such notoriety as Cohen has played the Kazakhstani news reporter, you’d think maybe the jokes would become stale or harder to pull off. Instead, with the addition of Maria Bakalova as his disrespected daughter yearning for her father’s acceptance, and eventually for her own freedom, Borat 2 is as good as, if not better than the film that came before. As per usual, Cohen, with Bakalova, is able to show the parts of our culture we should be ashamed of, but over the last several years (if not last several HUNDRED years) have had the climate to be more public. Points of view are questioned and mocked, and satire is used to its utmost. Borat 2 is, without question, one of my favorite films of 2020 and its audacity helps keep the shtick of it all fresh and thriving. Movies 2021 - 47. Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021; written by Chris Terrio; directed by Zack Snyder) 🌮🌮🌮 (3 tacos) After Superman’s death, Batman attempts to unite super-powered individuals to prevent the world’s destruction. Well, it has finally arrived! The Snyder Cut has finally hit HBOMax and it did everything everyone expected it to: it changed the world. Ah, bask in its glory! Are the toxic fans gone? Was that a good enough smoke screen? The Snyder Cut of Justice League has arrived on HBOMax and, well, it is definitely a movie. I have to be honest; I am very torn on the existence of this thing. On one hand, I feel for Zack Snyder. During production of the film in 2017, Snyder lost his daughter to suicide, and stepped away from the project to mourn the loss. Joss Whedon stepped in to finish up the project and the results were uneven. Over the last few years, there has been a lot of revisionist history in regards to people’s reactions to the work. People who didn’t like it then really didn’t like it, but people who did like it started disliking it when behind-the-scenes antics started becoming public and Snyder expressed a desire to complete his version. Time for that second hand. It’s hard to be behind something that exists in part due to an undercurrent of toxic online behaviors. This isn’t to say that every Snyder Cut dreamer was rude and unbearable, but there was enough reported bad behavior to make it a nuisance for some and outright online abuse for others. With Warner Bros. greenlighting this project, it gave Snyder the chance to finish his vision, but at the cost of a company caving into the demands of a bunch of irate fans. In this era of entitled fans expressing themselves to a point where creative teams alter their storytelling plans, this can be an unruly precedent to set. But enough about the how and why this movie exists. The big question is, how is it? How great is the mythical Snyder Cut? The answer is an astonishing… meh. While a four-hour runtime allows for expanding backstories of characters, it also allows for a lot of self-indulgent excess. {{CONTINUED IN COMMENTS}}

Movies 2021 - 46. Jungleland (2020; written by Theodore Bressman, David Branson Smith, and Max Winkler; directed by Max Winkler) 🌮 (1 taco) Two brothers travel cross country to change their current, dire circumstances. There comes a moment when watching a movie where you pivot in your feelings. You can either feel yourself really sink in to what is happening and go along for the ride, or you feel yourself completely revolt against that moment, and emit an even deeper groan when things get worse. Jungleland is what happens when you take the poverty conflict and sports-themed determination of The Fighter and the seediness and unexpected crime of Boogie Nights, but filter it through the complete ineptitude of Troy Duffy. And yet, somehow, people were wooed by The Boondock Saints, too. There is talent a-plenty in this film, but only Jonathan Majors escapes completely unscathed. Mostly because he exits the movie after the first chapter. After him, Jack O’Connell seems to be the one with the lion’s share (clever) of the discernible talent. He is saddled with an under-developed character and told to be as mush-mouthed as possible through most of the film, but somehow he still comes out okay. This could be because both Charlie Hunnam and Jessica Bardon feel woefully out of place here. There’s something about the dialogue, plot, and their command of both that never really clicks into place. I have seen films before where the main characters continue to behave in frustrating ways, but here, for some reason those frustrations rub off of the characters and onto the actors themselves. Everything about this movie feels so inconsistent and all over the place. Plot threads are left to dangle, or come out of nowhere and serve no real purpose. There is an idea in here that could have really amounted to something, but I think a lack of focus really hurts Jungleland, making it something I struggled to finish.

In honor of my guest appearance on this week’s @backlot605: THE REHEAT 2021 - 11. Kramer Vs. Kramer (1979; written and directed by Robert Benton) WILL IT GUAC? No, but so close. Kramer Vs. Kramer is Marriage Story before it was cool. Featuring a younger Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep at the beginning of her skyrocket to stardom, this is a fantastic human drama about a family torn apart by divorce and a custody battle. At the time, this film was approaching the divorce/custody battle trope from a different perspective: that the father is the one left to raise the child and that he fights to keep custody of his son. I don’t know how groundbreaking of a story this is now, but it certainly doesn’t change the fact that here, it is done remarkably well. Strong performances all around help make it the classic that it is regarded as today. From Hoffman to Streep, but also from youngster Justin Henry to Jane Alexander to a very memorable bit with JoBeth Williams, the ensemble only adds to the greatness of this film. The debate may rage on for years as to whether or not this is truly the best film of 1979, but it definitely deserves classic status and its place in the pantheon of great American dramas. In honor of my most recent episode of Let’s Taco ‘Bout with @2kolsch, I present: THE REHEAT 2021 - 10. Rounders (1998; written by David Levien and Brian Koppelman; directed by John Dahl) WILL IT GUAC? Nope. Sometimes you see a movie at a younger age and you fall in love with it. Sometimes you see a movie at a young age and your friends fall in love with it, thus making you kind of like it, but mostly tolerate it because they have found a way to make it fun. I don’t know that I was ever anything more than lukewarm on Rounders, the 1998 film about the consequences of underground poker. I knew I liked Matt Damon and Edward Norton and that John Malkovich’s Russian accent was terrible and incredible all at the same time. I knew I rented it right away when it came out on video, but it was when my college roommates fell in love with it and watched it nearly every day that I actually kind of started liking it. Looking back on it, I can now kind of pinpoint what I didn’t like about this cult classic. Rounders is about toxic friendships and enabling people to commit toxic behaviors. Watching these friends and the people around them encourage their bad behaviors, I can see why it was appealing to me and my friends back then. But now, as an adult, I found myself wanting to chastise these men for the hell they are bringing with them. Sure, this is a film that has a large fanbase and has amassed quite the following since 1998. I think revisiting it and only being entertained by Malkovich’s KGB is enough to make me wait a few more years before taking this trip again. 🌮🌮TACO TUESDAY🌮🌮 The journey down memory lane continues with @2kolsch! Brad was one of my best friends in high school and the first collegiate go-round, and we hadn’t connected in years. Here, we reminisce about the good times, and laugh about how we barely survived the crazy times. A lot of great memories that I feel so removed from, but can still remember as clear as day. We then wrap things up with a very brief chat about Rounders, the movie that doesn’t quite hold up, but Malkovich’s KGB is still a show-stealer. 🚨LINK IN BIO!!!🚨 #movies #movie #film #cinema #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #filmcommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #filmreviews #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review #hifromsd #movies2021 #southdakotafilmsociety #rounders

Movies 2021 - 45. The Last Blockbuster (2020; written by Zeke Kamm; directed by Taylor Morden) 🌮🌮🌮 1/2 (3 1/2 tacos) After being the largest nationwide chain of video rental stores, Blockbuster Video has been reduced to one surviving location in Bend, Oregon. This needs be said right away to clear up any confusion or misreporting: The Last Blockbuster is not a Netflix movie. It was not produced by Netflix. It is an independent documentary that was released on disc and VOD last year. Because of how this business works, Netflix is now streaming this documentary about the downfall of the video rental industry and how one store is trying to keep that spirit alive. The Last Blockbuster isn’t a super deep dive into the world of the video rental business, but it is a nice trip down memory lane and a rightful celebration of someone trying to keep that joy alive. I do have to say that I was impressed that the documentary showed some of Blockbusters shadier sides. The takeover of the mom and pop video stores has been a blemish on the memory for even those who absolutely adored their weekly Blockbuster visits. They cover that here. Also, with Blockbuster being a family video store, there were certain films that could not be carried there. Despite coming off as a singular-minded asshole in the film, you have to understand why Troma’s Lloyd Kauffman would hold a grudge. But this is more a discussion of how this one store is still able to stay open than it is anything else, and I truly hope it can do so for years to come. There is a joy that comes from visiting a video store that can’t be matched by today’s streaming services and video on demand. Everything is available at your fingertips now, if you know what you’re looking for. There is less opportunity to stumble upon something based on what you were looking for being gone or just by a weekly shelf wander. The magic of the cover art is gone. It’s an experience that many will never get to have, and that is a shame. I am so glad that this sole Blockbuster exists and I hope that somewhere down the road, there is some kind of a revival. A trip to the local library just isn’t the same as one to the neighborhood video store

Movies 2021 - 44. Coming 2 America (2021; written by Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein, and David Sheffield; directed by Craig Brewer) 🌮🌮🌮 (3 tacos) THE REHEAT 2021 - 9. Coming to America (1988; written by David Sheffield and Barry Blaiustein; directed by John Landis) WILL IT GUAC? No, but it doesn’t have to. 🌮🌮🌮 1/2 (3 1/2 tacos) Eddie Murphy is a comedy icon. To have had the opportunity over the last few years to see him reclaim that title with people again realizing how great he is has been an absolute joy. His performance in My Name Is Dolemite helped open the door to a sequel to one of his best comedies, Coming to America. Coming to America is wonderful fish out of water movie that gave Murphy a chance to do something outside of the norm of what he had been doing up to that point: he played an earnest, good natured character. That’s not to say Murphy’s characters before this were mean, but they had some snark and sarcasm to them. Akeem does not. Murphy made the most out of it and helped create something iconic. The original Coming to America still holds up. Sure, there are some jokes here and there that are certainly best left in the 80s, but overall, the comedy and storyline help this movie feel mostly timeless. The first film also helped introduce Arsenio Hall to the mainstream, and looking back, I don’t think we appreciated that gift as much as we should have. Hall is great , and, like Murphy, plays multiple characters with such conviction and joy. The two make a great comic pair. To me, the worst thing about the sequel is the name. For those of us who still talk about movies, stressing the “2” in Coming 2 America feels ridiculous. The movie itself, however, is a lot more fun than the consensus seems to be stating. I got a lot of happiness getting to see these characters again. The fish out of water element for Akeem is gone and this time it is handed down to his son, Lavelle, played by Jermaine Fowler. Lavelle is the son born out of wedlock with Akeem never knowing he existed. But now that Akeem is becoming the ruler of Zamunda, he needs an heir. {{CONTINUED IN COMMENTS}}

Movies 2021 - 43. Black Bear (2020; written and directed by Lawrence Michael Levine) 🌮🌮 1/2 (2 1/2 tacos) A filmmaker retreats to the woods and interacts with a couple, but all is not what it seems. I don’t have too much to say about Black Bear as, sadly, I was not engaged by this film. I respect the craft of it and the performances, but there was enough connective tissue for me to give it much thought after it was over. The film is separated into two parts. In the first, something happens and everyone’s lives are affected by it. In the second, everything starts all over again, with the actors playing different characters in different relationships. Events happen differently. There’s no real rhyme or reason to this or indicator as to why this happens. You’re just expected to go with it. It’s hard to knock it for that choice because the film the sections are still well done and tell a story on their own. It’s the combination that leaves me feeling empty. Aubrey Plaza is great, as always, and shows that she needs more opportunities to lead a movie. Christopher Abbot and Sarah Gadon are also great. It’s just a movie that, while I know others enjoyed it, did nothing for me. #movies #movie #film #cinema #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #schmuckclub #movienerd #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #filmcommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #filmreviews #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review #hifromsd #movies2021 #southdakotafilmsociety

Movies 2021 - 42. The Forty-Year-Old Version (written and directed by Radha Blank) 🌮🌮🌮🌮 (4 tacos) With her 40th birthday just over the horizon, a playwright reinvents herself to rediscover her voice. On my 40th birthday, I wanted to watch something good. Something that would strike a chord. While so many of the particulars of The Forth-Year-Old Version including race and gender and post-success expectations will never be things I know of, the idea of trying to find your voice really hit with me. It hit so hard that this film catapulted its way onto my best of 2020 list and made me wonder why so many of us had never previously heard of the force of nature that is Radha Blank. Radha Blank plays Radha, a playwright on the cusp of turning 40 who is searching for her next success. She earned a taste of fame by writing a successful play, and is constantly working on creating her next gem. In the meantime, however, she teaches theater and is struggling. She is given an opportunity to write again, but it challenges her integrity. Out of frustration, she turns to writing rap music to express her frustration with the world and her place in it. Doing so helps her discover the strength to express all of the feelings and disappoint that have been building up within her. Radha Blank is amazing. She is not only the star of this film, but she handles to work behind the camera and on the page. There is so much going on in this film and Blank delivers everything she wants to say in a clear and effectively concise matters. She tackles what it feels like to feel creatively stuck, professionally stuck, dealing with grief, and getting older. She also tackles the pressure and expectations of being a Black artist in a field where the product is mass-consumed by white people. The stories can either be about the full on “historical Black struggle” but with a softened, highly filtered lens and maybe a song or two, or it can be about the “modern Black experience” with a friendly white person to help them through it. Movies 2021 - 41. Nine Days (2021; written and directed by Edson Oda) 🌮🌮🌮🌮 (4 tacos) A reclusive man conducts interviews over a period of nine days with human souls waiting to be born. As is often the case, it seems, I will watch a movie and instead of writing the review right away — like I should do — I wait weeks before putting my thoughts down to share with others. When this happens, I tend to forget the movies that leave little impact. Even movies I enjoyed, if they didn’t particularly resonate with me, the details of why I liked them seem to fade the further I get from them. Nine Days is the complete opposite of that. The further I get away from it, the more I love it. The higher I want my score to be. The sadder I get that this film still has not been released beyond the festival circuit and Independent Spirit Award Screeners. Nine Days is a soul-enriching wondrous journey. Simple in design, but emotionally rich in its construction, I find myself having to truly restrain myself from hyperbolic comments. It moved me that much. Nine Days finds Winston Duke as Will, a lonely man sitting in a house watching first person perspective video tapes of people’s lives. We come to find these videos are actually what people are seeing as they live their lives, the videographers those selected by Will to transition from a soul to a human. Here, a soul is either selected for life, or it disappears after nine days. When Will watches tragedy befall a soul he selected, he finds himself pondering the choices he’s made in his selecting process, just as more souls are about to begin that process. One of those souls, Emma, played by Zazie Beetz, shows a curiosity that challenges him to even further question himself. Nine Days isn’t necessarily a plot-driven movie, though, as an audience, you do care immensely about the story unfolding in front of you. Instead, it is this emotionally rich journey about what it is to be human. How did we get here? Are we like this from the very beginning? The film present an idea of what could be, and while the results are more melancholy than many would hope for, to this reviewer, it seems pretty perfect. {CONTINUED IN COMMENTS}

TV SERIES 2021 - 5. WandaVision (2021; created and written by Jac Schaeffer; directed by Matt Shakman) 🌮🌮🌮 1/2 (3 1/2 tacos) Wanda Maximoff and The Vision find themselves living in wedded bliss, though their lives seem to resemble the worlds of classic sitcoms. You know how cliffs kind of start with a plateau and then plummet downwards? My thoughts on WandaVision are akin to that, but with not as steep of a drop. Marvel’s first Disney+ series, WandaVision was a fascinating bit of experimentation. What started as an odd, unexplained homage to classic sitcoms that showcased a pivot to something fresh and innovative, became trademark Marvel, with a big bad, CGI battles, and a build towards what comes next instead of what is actually here. This pivot is a shame because over half of WandaVision ranks amongst some of Marvel’s best, most original onscreen work. WandaVision isn’t something you can dive too deep into without spoiling it. Wanda Maximoff and her partner, Vision, are living their lives in a different, ever-changing era, mimicking the worlds best known in classic television sitcoms. No one is really the wiser to this except for Wanda, and people outside Westview. You see, Wanda has taken over a town, controlling everyone’s mind and creating a sense of perfection for herself, which includes bringing Vision back to life after watching him die before her eyes twice during the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The hows and whys and other parties involved reveal themselves over the course of the season. When the series sticks to this general premise, with some flashbacks and side quests, everything is great. When it doesn’t, the series feels like squandered opportunity. {CONTINUED IN COMMENTS}

I failed to mention my disappointment over The Invisible Man’s omissions in the technical categories. Movies 2021 - 39. Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry (2021; directed by R.J. Cutler) 🌮🌮 1/2 (2 1/2 tacos) A look at the rising career of musician Billie Eilish. I have to say I completely respect Billie Eilish’s talent as a musician. Teamed with her brother, Finneas, Eilish has helped make today’s music far more interesting. Over the past several years, she has grown in talent and ability. I was a little disappointed when the next James Bond movie was delayed, not completely because of the film itself, but because Eilish’s theme song was released prior to the film’s continual COVID delays. It would have been a huge hit as it truly is a fantastic Bond song. It still has a huge chance of being a hit, but the delay certainly will have an impact. I say all of this as a cushion for the fact that I found Eilish’s The World’s a Little Blurry documentary to be kind of a drag. The access is unprecedented as we get a true peek directly into Eilish’s world, utilizing footage from home movies and phone recordings chronicling Eilish’s rising star status. The footage of that ascent, however, feels a bit unfocused. It also feels without a true sense of purpose. This is because there is just so much content; the documentary is entirely too long. With a reduction in length, there can be more of a narrative through line. I do feel, however, that the amount of content is definitely for fans. If you’re blasting Eilish’s albums on a regular basis, you’d want even more than the nearly two and a half hour runtime. Since I am an Eilish novice, I need a much more streamlined approach with a focused narrative. The World’s a Little Blurry made me feel my age. It certainly grew my respect for Eilish, her artistry, and her brother’s songwriting talents, but it also made me remember what that age feels like. Teen angst sure is something. It heightens every moment and the collision of emotions makes brooding a pasttime. That isn’t to discount the message of Eilish’s music as I think being able to relate to someone of your age while you are going through it is incredibly important. I just think for me, as someone older, the music is all I really need.

Movies 2021 - 37. Miss Juneteenth (2020; written and directed by Channing Godfrey Peoples) 🌮🌮🌮 (3 tacos) A single mother prepares her daughter for a Miss Juneteenth beauty pageant. Miss Juneteenth is a fine family drama that also serves as the big screen debut of filmmaker Channing Godfrey Peoples. Peoples is a fine filmmaker who adds depth and emotional resonance to film that in less skilled hands could be a made for TV movie. She also is graced with the presence of lead actress Nicole Beharie. Beharie is a truly special talent to behold. I think as solid as this film was, it is one I should have reviewed sooner. Outside of Beharie’s performance, there isn’t much that is standing out in my memory that makes this film truly exceptional. That isn’t to say it is bad, by any means. It is a movie worth watching that has a lot to connect with. Movies 2021 - 36. Nomadland (2020; written and directed by Chloe Zhao) 🌮🌮🌮🌮 (4 tacos) A widow who loses everything during the Great Recession embarks on a cross-country journey as a nomad. Nomadland seems to mark the mainstream arrival of filmmaker Chloe Zhao. Zhao’s last film, The Rider, was one of 2018’s best. Nomadland is just as worthy of that claim for 2020. Playing more as an emotional tone poem than an active narrative feature, Zhao’s latest is a journey through grief and attempting to navigate where life takes us. Nomadland finds acting great Frances McDormand delivering another wonderful performance as Fern, a widow from a work town that went dead. Her natural compass leads her towards the life of the modern, American nomad, someone who is always on the move, always looking for where life will take them next. Fern travels through Nevada and many other places, including South Dakota where she travels through the Badlands and takes up temporary employment at Wall Drug. Throughout her travels, she finds a community of like-minded people who have also let their hearts’ compass be their guide rather than setting down roots. While it may not have the most prominent of narrative arcs, Nomadland has a great emotional connective tissue thanks to Zhao sure-handed direction and McDormand’s excellent performance. McDormand’s characters of late have mostly felt full of spunk. Here, she definitely still carries that strength, but here there is a mournful vulnerability to her. Her presence carries the weight of the film and because we feel so locked in to her, we feel locked into the film. With Zhao’s output so early in her career, it certainly seems likely that she will have a slate full of masterpieces ahead of her. She creates thoughtful works that may be textbooks of technique, but it is how she connects that technique to truly heartfelt storytelling that will set her apart from many of her peers. Nomadland is quickly becoming the film to beat this awards’ season and I understand that completely. It is a quiet slice of life kind of film, but one that captivates the whole way through.

Movies 2021 - 35. I Care A Lot (2020; written and directed by J. Blakeson) 🌮🌮🌮 1/2 (3 1/2 tacos) A crooked legal guardian swindles the elderly out of their life savings. Rosamund Pike is one of the most talented, underappreciated actresses working today. I say this mere days after she won a Golden Globe for best lead actress in a comedy. I say this as buzz for her performance in this film continues to grow. I say this as people begin to appreciate her. Still, that it took people this long is kind of a crime. On the flip side of that, at least she is now getting the recognition she deserves. And the purpose of all of this is to say that as good as Rosamund Pike is in I Care A Lot, the ensemble as a whole here is what helps make this one of the most entertaining and electric films so far this year. I Care A Lot is an oddball film where there is no one to cheer for. All of the major moving pieces are various levels of scummy for various different reason. Pike plays Marla Grayson, a legal guardian to elderly people who the courts deem no longer fit to care for themselves. The problem is that they’re deemed no longer fit because Grayson and her partners, including her romantic partner, Fran, played by Eiza Gonzalez, have manipulated the system to rule in their favor so they swindle people out of their estate. When Grayson crosses paths with Jennifer Peterson, played by the incomparable Dianne Wiest, she finds she may have a true challenge on her hands. As already mentioned, Pike is phenomenal. She is playing at a level of cool and calculated that should make her a long-adored antihero. But she’s not an antihero. She’s not a hero. She is terrible. THE REHEAT 2021 – 8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990; written by Todd W. Langen and Bobby Herbeck; directed by Steve Barron) WILL IT GUAC? Nope, but we love it anyway! They are the world’s most fearsome fighting teens. They’re heroes in a half-shell… and they’re green. They’re names? More famous that most American presidents. Leonard. Donatello. Raphael. Michelangelo. Anyone who experienced childhood in the late 80s/early 90s instantly thinks of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when they hear those words and not the renaissance painters who inspired the names. Can you blame them? The Ninja Turtles were a cultural phenomenon. When the foursome hit the big screen, it was a highly anticipated cinematic experience. With the impact it made on my childhood, it is hard to really approach the Turtles’ first feature-length film with a critical eye. I love it too much. Re-watching it brought back so much joy and so many memories. It is an action-packed adventure that is filled with laughter and a surprising amount of emotion. As a kid who loved the cartoon, I remember being taken aback by some of the sadder moments. Still, though, the focus is justifiably set on the fun-loving, butt-kicking turtles. For people walking around in giant turtle costumes, the fight choreography is a ton of fun. The guys in the suits, coupled with the very talented voice actors and a great story really makes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles a wonderful family movie that is far more than just a fond trip down memory lane.
