Mikä on erikoisin paikka? Tai tapa katsoa leffaa? Movies 2024 - The Bubble (2022; directed by Judd Apatow) 💩 (The Turd) April Fool’s: One of our modern day great comedy writer/directors takes on moviemaking in the time of COVID. What could go wrong? I’ll be totally honest: I don’t know if this whole movie is as bad as the first 45 minutes are. I kind of checked out at that point. The movie still played and I found myself still looking up at the screen, but my mind wandered so many places as the movie continued for another hour-plus. Why did Pedro Pascal and Karen Gillian agree to this? What has happened to Judd Apatow? Everyone had to have been paid really well to do this, right? I found this thing to be as bad as bad can be, made even worse by all of the talent involved. There are people here who should know better and people here who, while they may not typically have the most discerning picking ability, they really just gave up when it came to choosing this. I want to say, too, that this isn’t the worst movie I have ever seen. Not even by a long shot. It is, however, amongst the most disappointing. With a concept, casting, and production team so promising, this execution is downright depressing.

At first glance, ‘Phantom of Paradise’ might strike you as an oddity that’s hard to embrace. Directed by the visionary Brian De Palma, this film is a peculiar concoction of horror, comedy, and rock opera that initially feels weird and uncomfortable. But give it time, and it will blossom into an experience you didn’t know you needed. magine the flamboyance of ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ and the gothic romance of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ colliding in a fever dream. That’s ‘Phantom of Paradise’ for you. It’s a bizarre and crazy film that’s as weird as it is magical. Movies 2024 - The Kissing Booth (2018; directed by Vince Marcello) 🌮 1/2 (1 1/2 tacos) April Fool’s: An adaptation of a popular YA romance finds it way to Netflix. What could go wrong? Dear filmmakers, please do me this favor. Don’t overload your film in the first twenty minutes. What I mean by this is that I want you to take some time to let your movie breathe, especially if it is a teen romantic comedy. If you hit us with bad jokes, zany expressions, terrible music, wooden performances, and all kinds of manic energy right off the bat, you run the risk of alienating your audience. I found myself desperately wanting to shut this movie off within the first twenty to thirty minutes. It is painfully cloying with so much overexaggeration that I felt like I witnessed the death of comedy. However, once this movie settles down and allows itself time to breathe, I do get why this may have been popular with younger audiences when it initially hit Netflix. There is a sweetness to it that is hard to deny. There is also a crazy horniness to this movie. I don’t know if I have ever felt as old as I did watching this movie. I was a little taken aback by it. I won’t judge it, as I was a teen once and my hormones did what they did. It just didn’t feel as blatant as it did here. Also… I found the Netflix ratings loophole as this feels like a PG-13 movie, but they drop two f-bombs pretty much back to back. This doesn’t impact my rating because I’m not a prude, but I did feel old watching this happen. Also, the ending sucked. Listen… Jacob Elordi is, like, nine feet tall. There is no way Joey King would have confused her best friend for Elordi no matter what costume or car. As a tall guy with a torso, no one will ever mistake me for someone shorter.

Movies 2024 - Pinocchio (2022; directed by Robert Zemeckis) 🌮 (1 taco) April Fool’s: A “live-action” remake of the animated Disney classic featuring one of America’s most beloved actors. What could go wrong? Pinocchio isn’t necessarily bad; it’s just painfully lazy and totally unnecessary. This is also another Disney “live-action” remake where a good portion of it is a CGI creation. Watching it, you can absolutely understand why this didn’t see a theatrical release. There are some alterations to the story near the end, which while it’s a nice tug on the heartstrings, it also feels a little disappointing. Why couldn’t the entire movie be so bold with its change-ups? Why did we have to be so beholden to the image and story that came before? Would a fresh take on Pinocchio have been so bad. I guess we can rest easy as Guillermo del Toro’s far superior version of Pinocchio released later the same year.

Movies 2024 - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978; directed by Michael Schultz) 🌮 (1 taco) April Fool’s: Two of the biggest music stars of the era — Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees — unite to pay tribute to The Beatles in a rock opera consisting of one of the greatest rock albums of all time. What could go wrong? When you decide a few weeks into production that your leads should not say any words of dialogue and opt to make the whole thing a rock opera, you know something has gone terribly wrong. Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees were some of the most successful musicians of the 1970s. Then this movie happened, and they were basically wiped from relevancy. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band finds its roots as an homage to the music of The Beatles, but somehow because the most bizarre hodgepodge of half-baked ideas. Drugs probably should have gotten a screenplay credit as this thing is as bonkers as you can get. It’s strange because it feels like the film was made for families, but I don’t see how any parent would feel comfortable taking a child to this cinematic hallucination. I almost feel bad for the likes of George Burns and Steve Martin for agreeing to be in this, but we all make bad choices every now and again. The biggest stumper of all, though, is how could anyone have seen this and think Across the Universe would be a good idea? Some artists’ music should just be left on their albums or covers. If the only thing to come out of this movie was the soundtrack, history would look at it very differently. Instead, a cinematic crime against humanity has been committed. The taco is for the soundtrack. This movie sucks.

“The First Omen,” a prequel to the iconic horror classic, manages to cast a shadow that is both familiar and freshly ominous. With a 3.5 out of 5-star rating, this 2024 film is a wonderfully crafted homage to its predecessor, meticulously designed to mirror the look and feel of the original. The filmmakers have paid close attention to detail, ensuring that the atmosphere and tension that defined the original are present, creating a seamless transition in the timeline. The ensemble cast is the film’s beating heart, delivering performances that draw you into every scene with palpable intensity. Each actor embodies their role with such conviction that you can’t help but be fully immersed in the unfolding drama. However, the film’s reliance on jump scares is a double-edged sword. While some moments will have you recoiling in your seat, others fall flat, failing to evoke the desired shock. This inconsistency is a minor blemish on an otherwise gripping experience. For a movie burdened with the colossal task of living up to its legendary namesake, “The First Omen” sticks most of the landing. It’s a commendable effort that respects its roots while striving to innovate, and though it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the original, it stands as a solid entry in the horror genre. Fans of the series and newcomers alike will find plenty to appreciate in this chilling prelude. #thefirstomen #horror #nelltigerfree #theomen #church #religion #movies #movie #film #movies2024 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmgeek #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #filmreview #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review #explore #explorepage #blogger #blog

Movies 2024 - Slender Man (2018; directed by Slyvain White) 💩 (The Turd) April Fool’s: A film adaptation of the massively popular Creepypasta story. What could possibly go wrong? Spoiler: Everything. It’s gar-BAGE! Oh boy. This was terrible. I’m not going to blame the cast. This is a situation where they were really just trying to make the most of what they had to work with. Unfortunately, what they had to work with was absolute trash. Slender Man is one of the least competent and coherent films I have ever watched. Instead of creating an interesting story about the infamous titular character, the film pieces together moments of shocking visuals and jump scares photographed with terrible cinematography. There is a scene at the end that uses some pretty interesting visual shocks, but it is at the end of this godawful mess of a movie, and it feels so disconnected from the story that it has been trying to tell. I remember having a conversation at one time with someone who said graphics are the most important part of a video game. I said it still takes a story or something interesting about the gameplay to make it matter to me. This movie is lacking the story and competency to make any of the interesting visuals effective. The dialogue doesn’t help anything either. At one point, two characters basically say the same two lines to each other back and forth. This reminded me of a recent discussion over why screenwriters don’t have their characters say goodbye at the end of phone calls. We know they will, so it is extraneous information that can be cut. Here, these terrible moments of dialogue could also be excised because it comes off as a complete waste of brainpower. There is another moment where a character asks another if anything weird has happened to them. The other character is about to tell the story of what happened when she was visiting her crush. The first character snaps at her for mentioning the guy, and no longer cares about this pretty important thing the other character was about to share. Just stupid writing, here.

Movies 2024 - The Boss Baby: Family Business (2021; directed by Tom McGrath) 🌮🌮 (2 tacos) April Fool’s: Sequel to the surprise “hit” that features babies with fully functioning minds. What could go wrong? I don’t know that I can fairly review this movie because I really am not the target audience for it. That’s a cop out response, to an extent, as a really good movie will be able to cross the quadrants and have something for almost everyone. The Boss Baby sequel undoes the first film’s ending by creating a distance between the grown up Templeton siblings, but it gives this new film an opportunity to pull them back together. There is a part of me that is a sucker for those kind of stories. And, to further cater to me, Jeff Goldblum does a voice of one of the new central characters. Right there, it’s not all bad. However, this film is just too silly in a wildly scatterbrained way for me to sink my teeth into it. As a huge fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, there is a scene that uses The Time Warp as background music. Rather than feeling excitement, I found myself scoffing and criticizing the choice. But I imagine kids would eat that scene up. My rating feels too high, but anything lower feels too low. I think there is definitely enough here for kids to really enjoy, and that has to be all that matters with this one. #movies #movie #film #cinema #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #filminstagram #filmstagram #movienerd #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #filmcommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #filmreviews #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review #hifromsd #movies2023 #southdakotafilmsociety #aprilfools #aprilfoolsmonth @letterboxd: 2.4 @imdb: 5.9 @rottentomatoes: 46%

Movies 2024 - Gods of Egypt (2016; directed by Alex Proyas) 🌮 (1 taco) April Fool’s: An action-packed adventure depicting the bonds and battles between humans and the Gods from the director of The Crow and Dark City. What could go wrong? Gods of Egypt is — straight up — just as bad as you’ve heard it is. I wish I could say that my biggest issue with the film is the fact that for a film called Gods of Egypt, this is a pretty Anglo-Saxon motion picture. We’ve got English, Scottish, and Danish in the main trio of leads. Looking out into the crowds of people, it feels like there is a lack of Egyptian representation amongst this cast. It’s also ludicrous to see how the story portrays the gods as they walk among humans. The idea is that they are much taller than regular people, but it doesn’t always work. In some sequences, it is downright comical while in others, the camera effects screw it up so they look the same size (which is also comical). It’s painful to say that this is from the same guy who directed The Crow and Dark City. Proyas has obviously moved beyond the gorgeous, gothic darkness of those films, but this one is just so messily shot and constructed that it feels amateurish. I feel bad for most of talent involved, as I know they have to be better than this (the late Chadwick Boseman CERTAINLY was). Still, it is worth the watch because there are wild choices made here that have to be seen to be believed.

“Civil War”: A Thrilling Dive into Journalistic Ethics 📸 Alex Garland’s latest film, “Civil War,” is a gripping exploration of truth, morality, and the power of images. Set in a near-future America torn apart by civil conflict, the movie follows four photojournalists as they navigate chaos and capture moments that will haunt them forever. 🔍 Key Points: Lee Smith’s Dilemma: Kirsten Dunst shines as Lee Smith, a seasoned photojournalist. Her lens captures both horror and hope, but at what cost? The film delves into the ethical struggles faced by war correspondents. No Easy Answers: “Civil War” refuses to take sides. Instead, it immerses viewers in the chaos, leaving room for interpretation. What is the price of truth? Stunning Performances: Dunst’s haunted eyes convey the weight of her profession. The ensemble cast, including Wagner Moura, adds depth. Imaginative World: Garland’s vision is both disturbing and eerily plausible. The tension lies not in choosing sides, but in surviving the chaos. Universal Themes: While the film mirrors America’s divisions, it transcends politics. Conflict, ethics, and the impact of images are universal concerns. 🎬 “Civil War” invites you to question, to feel uncomfortable, and to appreciate the bravery of those who document our world. 🌎✨ #CivilWarMovie #JournalismEthics #alexgarland #kirstendunst #movies #movie #film #movies2024 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmgeek #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #filmreview #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review #explore #explorepage #blogger #blog

I made it a goal to read five books this year, partially because I missed reading on a regular basis, but also partially because Arthur of @twocentscriticpod decided to hold me accountable for saying I wanted to read more. He invited me back on his show to talk about a book this time around, and tonight, I finished @alex.michaelides The Silent Patient. I won’t say too much about this book — you’ll have to check out the episode for that — but I really enjoyed this read and the last thirty pages got me to yell, “What the hell?!?” It’s tough because I love movies so much and want to spend as much extra time watching as much as I can, but man… it really was a blast reading this crazy mystery. Movies 2024 - Dragonball Evolution (2009; directed by James Wong) 🌮 (1 taco) April Fool’s: One of the most popular anime/manga of all time is adapted into a live-action film by a major American film studio. What could go wrong? I can understand maybe why kids would enjoy this movie. Especially kids who have never seen the television series. There’s a lot in here that resembles something people would call entertainment. The story line isn’t awful and some of this feels charming on a “my brain only works occasionally” level. However, to adults and people who love the anime, I can imagine this is as close to a pox upon humanity as one can get. I don’t have any attachment to the series, as I have never watched an episode and have very minimal knowledge of the world. Still, even I can tell there are problems here beyond just the casting (which… swing and a miss). Not every piece of animation needs to be turned into a live-action version (more on this later in the month). This film is certainly a dud worthy of its terrible reputation. I am refraining from giving this a turd because I did still find myself engaged, wanting to see what happened next. There’s also something to be said for a movie so bad you can’t help but be amused and entertained. Kudos for that, Dragonball Evolution, but I will never watch you again.

Nic Cage tries to be serious for a horror movie. He does horror well when he goes full Cage. This is not one of those times. This film tries to be too serious. It takes a lot of time trying to set up what it actually is. Is it a mystery? Is it a thriller? Is it a horror? Is it supernatural? Depending the act, it’s one of those. It just doesn't know it. We get poor attempts to get you with jump scares. Not a single one got me. The film doesn't draw you in enough that your are so engulfed that the jump scares work. Cage, you're better than this. Movies 2024 - Ricky Stanicky (2024; directed by Peter Farrelly) 🌮🌮 (2 tacos) April Fool’s: After the Oscar-winning success of Green Book, Peter Farrelly returns to his comedy roots, teaming with Zac Efron, fresh off high praise for his performance in The Iron Claw. What could go wrong? I hate that I liked parts of this more than I expected to. Most of this is still pretty bad. It’s the writing. There are lazy choices made and lazy jokes, making it feel like something that still belongs in the 1990s. Comedy has to evolve a little or feel beyond its time. That’s why things like Blazing Saddles, Monty Python, and The Jerk feel a bit edgy today, but still feel hilarious. They face forward. Ricky Stanicky faces backwards and it certainly suffers for that. It’s a disappointing outing for Zac Efron. I imagine this was filmed either before or just after The Iron Claw, so it’s a matter of release timing that this feels like a huge backslide for him. It’s hard to critique his decision to make this movie when comedies like this were typically his bread and butter. Still, he plays the straight man out of a group of four, which makes him far less interesting that usual. The highlight, though, is John Cena. His introduction is rough as are the immediate scenes that follow, but when allowed to be a character playing a character, he nails it. There is a genuine humor to him as well as a genuine tender heart that he adds to the core of the movie. Cena is at his best even in moments of this movie where it feels like everyone else on screen is actively trying to bring the project down. Cena doesn’t always do it for me onscreen, but there is something about his comedic timing that often plays really well.

Movies 2024 - Xanadu (1980; directed by Robert Greenwald) 🌮🌮 1/2 (2 1/2 tacos) April Fool’s: To capitalize off of her rising star, filmmakers cast Olivia Newton John to star as a muse in a musical ode to old Hollywood and the roller disco. What could go wrong? Xanadu is certainly a movie where the creative team behind it made some choices. From neon lighting, to ghostly visual effects, to causing audiences to truly wonder “Were people expecting roller discos to be a big deal?” it comes off as completely bonkers, while still being tame enough for general audiences. It is easy to see why producers would choose to center around Olivia Newton John playing a muse. Coming off of the success of Grease and her own music career while basically looking like a goddess, she could generate attention easily. Unfortunately, this movie lacks the stability of Grease and doesn’t capitalize enough on her vocal prowess. Even Gene Kelly feels a bit underutilized. His danicing sequences are great — he hasn’t lost a step — but he doesn’t get too many chances to sing either. I do almost feel sorry for Michael Beck. The Warriors is a piece of cinematic gold (though maybe not so much upon its release). I almost feel like studios were banking on him becoming a megastar. Beck is much better playing a tough guy instead of the romantic lead. He appears in more scenes than anyone else, and he just lacks that pull to reel in an audience here. It’s also interesting to me that in a musical, Beck’s character is not given any songs. Musicals, by nature, are a bit bizarre, but this one takes bizarre to a whole different level, even in the way the songs are delivered to the audience. Still… I couldn’t help but be a little charmed by this thing. Sure, I laughed at places I am sure I wasn’t supposed to laugh: the duel — and mash-up — between swing music and “rock and roll,” at the club was particularly hilarious. But I have to admit, I couldn’t look away. Xanadu definitely lives up to its reputation as a bad movie, but it is never an uninteresting one.

Movies 2024 - Heartbeeps (1981; directed by Allan Arkush) 🌮🌮 1/2 (2 1/2 tacos) April Fool’s: In order to get his dream project made — a film based on the life of his alter-ego, Tony Clifton — Andy Kaufman stars in a major studio comedy to gauge his box office drawing power. What could go wrong? Shocking news to come out of the bad movies I watched tonight: I liked them both. It doesn’t change the fact that they are bad, but I found quite a bit to enjoy in both of them, this one especially. Heartbeeps is mostly bonkers. Who greenlit this? I feel like there was very clearly someone at Universal who hated Andy Kaufman. There is no world in which this movie becomes commercially successful. It somehow feels like an ahead of its time piece of sci-fi storytelling, but also very much a product of the 80s. The robotics element feels incredibly dated, but once you get past the first few minutes and understand the world of the movie, there is a certain tenderness to it. Robots creating their own family and caring for each other? Pretty emotional stuff. If this movie were animated, I think it may have played better upon its release. As much as I am a practical effects guy, there is something about the robot make-up and costumes that are kind of unintentionally terrifying. Hard to get kids’ butts in seats for a family movie about robots if you’re horrified to look at them. I think this is a movie that could certainly find a cult audience. Again… that doesn’t necessarily make it good, but there is something charmingly earnest and bizarre going on here.

It’s a Guy Ritchie movie. He has a style and you can see it. Ritchie got to reunite with Henry Cavill and this time he looks like he’s having a lot of fun. Cavill knows he doesn’t have to maintain the Superman persona and it shows. He is here to get shit blown up. Alan Richardson goes from Jack Reacher to a one-man killing machine with a bow and arrows and a pair of glasses. He’s here to get a barrel of nazi hearts. Surrounded by a solid cast but not supported by a solid script. The film is fun and jokes are made. It mixes the humor in with the action, however we don’t get enough time with any one character to really feel who they are. This is based on real people. Why do we only get to know about their accomplishments after this mission? It is shallow at times. Come for the body count and not the emotional investment. #theministryofunglentlemanlywarfare #guyritchie #henrycavill #alanritchson #alexpettyfer #eizagonzalez #caryelwes #movies #movie #film #movies2024 #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmgeek #movienerd #cinefile #cinephile #filmreview #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review #explore #explorepage #blogger #blog

Movies 2024 - Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023; directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield) 🌮 (1 taco) April Fool’s: The classic children’s character, Winnie The Pooh, enters the public domain and a filmmaker leaps at the opportunity to turn him into a horror icon. What could possibly go wrong? It’s weird to me that this may be one of the toughest movies to review. It’s not good, but, despite aggressive online chatter to the contrary, there is some merit here. In my head, I think of the things I like, but instantly cut something else down with a criticism, and sadly, the word that keeps popping up is “lazy.” Don’t get me wrong: turning one of the most beloved characters in the history of literature and children’s entertainment into a bloodthirsty monster isn’t lazy, but doing so in a way that lacks a creative drive or spark is. The motivation of this story is that Pooh is out for revenge after Christopher Robin left him and the other animals to fend for themselves while he grew up. If the film did more with this idea, it could have been something far more creative. Instead, Robin is an offscreen hostage for the majority of the movie while Pooh and Piglet stalk a group of college girls with zero defining characteristics to help the audience tell them apart. The plot and characters become simply uninteresting. That may be the biggest sin of all — not the nightmarish change of a beloved character, but that the nightmarish change was a cool idea with a bland execution. I will say that the brief moments of gore are fun. In fact, the bloody viscera would be the main reason for the one taco. Winnie the Pooh slaps the skin off of someone’s face at one point. If that ain’t worth one taco… Murkily shot, poorly scripted, and nothing that makes this more than just a crazy idea to lure in audiences, Blood and Honey is as half-assed as they come. For those wondering why this doesn’t get a turd, by comparison, I found everything about Swept Away much more egregious than this.

Movies 2024 - Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997; directed by Jan de Bont) 🌮🌮 (2 tacos) April Fool’s: A sequel to the surprise smash action hit of 1994 featuring the returning breakout star of the first film, Sandra Bullock. What could go wrong? Shockingly not as bad as I expected, Speed 2 still fails to be the non-stop adrenaline rush that made the first film so successful. For starters, it takes awhile for things to really get going. There is certainly an attempt to kick things in to high gear right away, but a motorcycle-ice cream truck chase intercut with Sandra Bullock’s Annie attempting to get her driver’s license just lacks a certain punch. The other concern is that you certainly feel the absence of Keanu Reeves. We can debate Reeves’ acting skills back and forth until we’re blue in the face, but there is no denying the fact that he has a certain charisma. Jason Patric may have a better command of dialogue, but he doesn’t stand out here as a screen presence. It doesn’t help that he is paired with Bullock who, at her best, is damn near a magnet, stealing the audience’s entire focus anytime she is on screen. She is too good for this movie where it feels like she is even more of a damsel in distress than she was in the first film. This film could certainly be considered Willem Dafoe’s audition tape for the Green Goblin, as he is a bonkers villainous delight. He does, however, get hampered a few times by having to delivery truly wooden exposition-laced monologues. Along with those dialogue moments, some plot elements are laughable, which does add to the fun, but probably not for the reasons De Bont had in mind. De Bont definitely makes some directorial CHOICES. Some odd slow motion, weird blocking and camera angles, and returning characters that serve more as a wink to the audience than essential to the plot. The film also has a particularly cringeworthy moment here in 2024 as a teen girl lustily tells her savior that she turns 15 in a week. I get that in ‘97, maybe that was a raucous punchline, but 27 years later, it lands like a ton of bricks.

Movies 2024 - Swept Away (2002; directed by Guy Ritchie) 🌮 (1 taco) April Fool’s: Coming off two smash hits, UK wunderkind, Guy Ritchie, directs his then wife, pop icon Madonna, in a remake of a beloved Italian film. What could possibly go wrong? Oh. This really is that bad. Not in a fun way, either. Swept Away is actually pretty problematic in its badness. As someone who has never seen the original, I would assume the romance is handled with a little more nuance than beginning with an assault. Comparing this film to Fifty Shades of Grey is a huge stretch, but there is something to be said about consent in dominance as opposed to it being driven by frustration… even if Madonna’s upper class character lives up to every letter in the word “bitch,” in the film’s early-goings. Doesn’t make it okay. I would say that Madonna’s performance here isn’t as awful as critics made it out to be; the problem is that everything surrounding it (and every stitch of dialogue the queen of pop is given) is pretty godawful. There’s never a moment where the audience is genuinely given an opportunity to care for or relate to these characters. Sure, you can relate to a situation: who hasn’t had to deal with a “customer” who feels like they are so high above you on the socioeconomic ladder, they feel completely justified in treating you like shit? Even so, there’s still something so bland and mean in Peppe’s demeanor that it’s hard to find him charming. If you did find him charming, he quickly destroys those feelings upon arriving at the island. Swept Away is a bad movie. I do feel like Guy Ritchie never totally recovered from this, even if he did have some moderate hits that followed. His original movies seemed like lackluster parodies of the two that worked (Lock Stock… and Snatch), while his “big money movie” entries may have found audiences, but lacked anything deeper than big budget sheen. Ritchie’s career trajectory is a bit disappointing and this misstep is arguably a huge reason why.

4/4/2024, 3:04:12 AM

For April, I am doing a new challenge. I will be watching at least 20 “bad” movies. The spectrum of “bad” is so wide, so I am setting guidelines: the movie must 1.9 or lower on @letterboxd, below 4.9 on @imdb, or 29% or lower on @rottentomatoes. The exception to these ratings qualifications would be for movies that people greatly anticipated, but were ultimately disappointed by. Each review will begin with an April Fool’s concept question and then I will share my thoughts on the flick. There’s a good chance I may watch some stinkers, so brace yourself. I know I am. #movies #movie #film #cinema #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #filminstagram #filmstagram #movienerd #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #filmcommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #filmreviews #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review #hifromsd #movies2023 #southdakotafilmsociety #aprilfools #badmovies

Movies 2024 - Baby Assassins: 2 Assassins (2023; directed by Yugo Sakamoto) 🌮🌮🌮 1/2 (3 1/2 tacos) A step above the previous film, Baby Assassins: 2 Assassins still suffers from the same issues that make the first one an average, at best, action comedy. The two main characters are obnoxious and the road that weaves in and out of the plot is filled with plenty of meandering. This is probably more of a slacker comedy than an action film, but some of the comedic beats fail to generate the laughs I imagine they were going for. For me, this is because these characters just feel like their primary trait is immaturity. I’m getting old, so that’s on me. Where this movie does succeed, though, is in its action scenes, though I definitely wish there were more of them. It is so nice to watch a competently filmed and choreographed hand to hand combat scene. We’re not being bombarded with cuts and close-ups; we actually get to see the movement and impact of the fight. There is a fight halfway through the movie that is certainly played for laughs, but it still is a really enjoyable fight scene. The ending makes any of the less satisfying moments in the movie absolutely worth the watch as it is truly captivating. Even a brief head-scratcher of a moment leads to a fun pay-off. Saori Izawa moves with such fluidity that I would be willing to watch more of these movies just for more chances to watch her fight. Another fun thing about this sequel is that our villains have good chemistry. They’re a fun pair to watch. I felt like they had a better handle on the patter of the dialogue than the heroes did. I would certainly recommend this movie to fans of Asian action films. I would give the caveat that it does lean a little too heavy into the slacker comedy genre for my tastes, but the fights ultimately make it worth the watch. #movies #movie #film #cinema #moviereview #moviereviews #moviebuff #filmtwitter #filmgeek #filminstagram #filmstagram #movienerd #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #filmcommunity #podernfamily #filmreview #filmreviews #moviecritic #filmcritic #movielover #movieaddict #movieenthusiast #review #hifromsd #movies2023 #southdakotafilmsociety #babyassassins2

Watching The Greatest Showman (2017) on 4K Tonight! I think this is one of the best musicals ever made. It focuses on a few core things: great music, passion, and love. Believe it or not, I'm a softy at heart, and it doesn't really take much to get me. This movie really gets me. I was a big fan of Les Misérables, but after this movie came out, it moved to my top spot for best musical. The 80s captured the underdog spirit really well, and I grew up on those types of movies, and this movie has that spirit about it. It's about people who don't fit in and who dare to dream big and go against the grain. It's a reminder to never give up on your dreams, no matter what challenges you might face. Like I said, I'm a softy when it comes to stuff like this. Never Enough with Rebecca Ferguson is still stunning, and it sends a shiver down my spine listening that. An excellent cast too, Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, and Zendaya. Perfect. This movie has a bonus too; it's got a killer Dolby Atmos soundtrack. We got really lucky on this one because Disney was compressing the hell out of home mixes back then. Thankfully, 20th Century Studios went through a different department. The 20th century has always had good-looking transfers and excellent sound, so I'm thankful we have this one in such a good state. This was back in 2017, and I think it could do with a brand new encode, but still, it's a relatively good-looking disc. But the sound has zero compression; this thing goes hard! What's your favorite musical, and why? Let's check it out. #TheGreatestShowman #PhysicalMedia #Movies #FilmCollectors #MovieCollectors #MovieNight #HomeTheater #HomeCinema #CelebratingPhysicalMedia #FilmDiscs #NoStreaming #SayNoToStreaming #WatchOnDisc #MoviesOnDisc #MovieOnDisc #FilmOnDisc #FilmsOnDisc #WatchingNow #NowWatching #MovieCynic #FilmCynic #MovieCritic #FilmCritic #MovieTalk #MovieEnthusiast #FilmCommunity #Cinephile #2017Movie
