A couple of stunners by the glass tonight, perfect to celebrate the end of a very long month and payday! Both are fitting for the bracing weather, providing central heating for adults. The La Bri Barrel Select Chardonnay 2020 from @labriswine Franschhoek, South Africa. Rich and elegant yet with a delicious freshness, layers of apricot and lemon zest. Grapes were handpicked from a single vineyard and fermented and aged in first fill barrels for 11 months. Mouth wateringly delicious. The Roero Nebbiolo Matteo Correggia 2020 from @giovanni.correggia.wine in Piemonte, Italy is showing beautifully. Layers upon layers of cherries, wild strawberries and violets with delicate and integrated tannins. This wine is perfectly structured with a lingering, slightly smoky finish. Superb value. A visit to Restless River is always a highlight; today’s was the launch of their latest releases, 2021 Ava Marie Chardonnay, Le Luc Pinot Noir 2020 & Main Road & Dignity Cabernet Sauvignon. We were welcomed with 2013 Ava Marie, a complex, still fresh 10-year old. Her younger sibling has tightrope minerally tension, restraining a powerhouse of flavour needing a good few years to emerge from its gordian knot. Three or four pickings from this 2ha vineyard focus on acidity, mouthfeel & flavour. Decisions on vinification are dependant on each picking. Always the focus is on reflecting the site. 2021 Ava is a thrilling wine, more Chablis than Meursault in style & a keeper. Le Luc has always been an individual, not reminiscent of other Upper Hemel en Aarde pinots but a pinot that makes one smile because it’s so chuffed to be different & very good. Maraschino cherry aromatics, richly textured but with an honest acid spine & unashamed tannins with satisfying savouriness. It’s easy to like. Main Road speaks clearly of its cool climate via bright, fresh cassis & a blackberry farewell. The structure is proper cab with close-knit tannins yet not overly intimidating & the are coated in ripe flesh. MR&D is one of my favourite cabs; 2020 is no exception. We were also treated to a vertical of this cab - 2013 - 2020; 2015, my favourite today, offers much enjoyable drinking now. Restless River fans should be very happy with these new releases, less so with the smaller quantities. I've been waiting for this beautiful bottle of Blaauwklippen Chardonnay 2022 🇿🇦 like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. It was last launched in 1993, when I was way too young to think about wine. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Pale yellow in the glass, the 2022 Blaauwklippen Chardonnay is a feast for the senses. Aromas of rich citrus, orange blossom, and yellow flowers dance out of the glass, with hints of peach and crème brûlée adding to the complexity. On the palate, the wine is fresh and acidity-driven, with a rich and creamy mid-palate. The finish is long and lingering, with a mineral core. It's a truly well-balanced and elegant Chardonnay, with complex aromas and flavors that will keep you coming back for more. But what really sets the 2022 Blaauwklippen Chardonnay apart is its versatility. It's a wine that can be enjoyed on its own, or paired with a variety of foods. It's especially good with richer dishes such as Thai and Indian curries, tuna steaks, and roasted chicken. So if you're looking for a delicious and versatile Chardonnay to enjoy, I highly recommend the 2022 Blaauwklippen Chardonnay. It's a wine that's worth waiting for. Fun fact: The Blaauwklippen wine farm is one of the oldest in Stellenbosch, founded in 1682. The name "Blaauwklippen" means "blue cliffs" in Afrikaans, and it refers to the ancient blue granite boulders that dot the landscape. @blaauwklippen

Playful hints of banana and lively lime add an extra layer of enjoyment, with a smooth and luxurious finish. And don't forget the subtle touch of oak that enhances the overall experience. How do they make it? They pick grapes at different sweetness levels. After crushing and skin contact, the juice settles, then goes into oak barrels. Some ferments naturally, others are started with yeast. Fermentation takes up to three months. After that, the wine rests on lees, gets sulphur, and ages six months in barrels before blending and bottling. This is one of my favourite South African Chardonnays ❤️

The delicious new 2021 release from @lelievansaron was named wine of the week by @jancisrobinson "This low-alcohol 2021 Chardonnay has all that I seek in a fine Chardonnay: an attractively mineral nose with both tension and fruit as well as real focus and balance that promise well for the future. I LOVE Chardonnay! And for those of us that are really into winter white wines this has got to be one of them!! 🍇-On the nose this wine is displaying a wide array of aromas but I get quite distinct notes of peaches, apricots and extremely fresh citrus with a nice balance of oak bringing vanilla and cinnamon almost leading me into apple crumble.(almost a combination of green apple skin and biscuit) on top of it all the palate is so different from the nose! 🕰 - I think this is a really generous wine as it is but has definitely got the freshness to lay down for another 3 to 5 years easily. It is best served between 7-12 degrees celsius and can be aged from 5-10 years. It’s World Chardonnay Day! One of the most versatile grapes, it’s believed to have originated in Burgundy but is now grown throughout the world. Chardonnay can produce a range of styles across both cooler and warmer climates/regions - from sparkling Blanc de Blancs or blended as a key component of Champagne, to lean and linear or rich and buttery still wines.
