My first visit to the Maconnais was to Macon La Roche Vineuse and Domaine Sylvaine & Alain Normand. Sylvaine met me in the bright airy lobby, and we determined that her English was far superior to my French, and she set about showing me the winery and taking me on a tour of the Maconnais by tasting their fresh, and delicious 2023 Chardonnay and Aligote offerings from tank! I love this. It not only saves wineries opening up bottles that might be wasted, but also you get to experience its flavor before bottling. Their wines are beautiful (more on that in a separate post!) I have enjoyed several bottles of their Macon-Roche de Vineuse and Bourgogne Blanc, the last few years.These are not flabby wines. They are precise, lively, with fresh fruit and a slight mineral backbone; often not what many people think about when they see the name ‘Macon’ on a bottle of wine. Sylvaine & Alain met in Oenology school back in Beaune. Alain is from the Loire Valley and Sylvaine from the Maconnais. Together, they ended up outside of Macon Roche de Vineuse with a sharecropper's agreement on old abandoned vineyards (approximately 13 ha) with cement tanks in an old stone barn In 2017, they built and moved into the new facility that makes their lives much easier! In 2009, Sylvaine inherited some vines in Solutre and Chaintre; and since the 2020 announcement of 19 1er Cru sites in Pouilly Fuissé, her Pouilly Fuissé from the lieux dits of Au Vignerais is 1er Cru! The philosophy of their domain is ‘less is more’. Vineyards will be certified Organic later this year, and in the cellar, there is no rush to bottle. Most wines are fermented and matured in tank, with exception of the Vieilles Vignes and Ier Cru Pouilly Fuisse (which sees barrel fermentation) They leave the wine in tank until just before the harvest of the next year, and so they never have to fine, and rarely have to filter. I met Alain briefly but did not get the opportunity to get a picture of him, so here you see Sylvaine, who was so welcoming and has such a warm and passionate personality! Restons sur la côte de Beaune avec un Savigny les Beaune blanc de 2018. Belle découverte ce domaine d’Isabelle Doudet. Troisième génération, ce domaine à commencé dans les années 30, au sein de Savigny. Une culture en lutte raisonnée, ce domaine dispose aujourd’hui de 13 ha de vignes. Une robe jaune pâle Un nez intense mielleux et vanillé Une attaque en bouche très ronde, des notes de fleurs blanche, une légère note d’abricot confit, d’ananas frais qui donne du peps avec cette pointe d’acidité très très fine. La fin de bouche est ronde et briochée. Plutôt une belle longueur ! Un très bon Savigny, une belle structure maîtrisée. Back to our tour of the best Chardonnays of the Finger Lakes—which is synonymous with saying some of the best Chardonnay in the world. I’ll do a full recap of our FLX vs Burgundy tasting soon, but because I just had one of the best tasting dinners ever at @kindredfare with @trestle_31 last night I wanted to post a special celebration of @nova_cadamatre_mw . All of her wines were amazing, but none more so than her stunning 2022 Chardonnay. This same Chardonnay performed very well in the event I hosted last week where our (future) Glen Hollow Chardonnay (currently @heronhillwinery Macri Vineyard) went up against some impressive white Burgundies. Both FLX wines were solidly in the conversation as bests of the night up against those from Meursault, Puligny Montrachet, and Chassagne Montrachet. Nova is doing a LOT of work on both coasts (and in the Midwest!) and everything I’ve had has been first rate. Rightly, we are very proud here of our European winemakers who have brought so much to this region, but Nova is one of the great American auteurs of wine that have made their homes here. Alice and Olivier de Moor's Bourgogne Chitry 2022 is an exciting white with still room to grow but nonetheless delicious to drink now. I had two so decided to open one of the bottles. With grapes grown on calcareous soils it has a fresh zippy side that is still balanced by some young apricots and nectarine and a nicely toned saltiness. Vinified with biodynamic practices with natural yeast, aged in large foudres to not overwhelm the oak impact and applying no filtration and fining; it gives a very fresh picture of quality Chablis style that i personally enjoy a lot rain or shine. With the heat finally touching Dutch soils it was a no brainer to pair it with a bright salad of nectarine, toasted almonds and straciatella.
