A couple of crevice spiny lizards. @mistersceloporus has these things as a target for West TX which I think is absurd. They’re not even on my radar. All I know is these are the damn little buggers who constantly trick me into thinking I finally found something while shining a cut (I never do). All jokes aside, spiny lizards actually are pretty cool. For starters, they’re snake food, and their genus does happen to display some super unique and vibrant coloration! Our time in the #california desert also produced a handful of smaller species, ranging from Desert Hairy Scorpions (Hadrurus arizonensis pallidus) and Windscorpions (Eremobates pallipes) to specialized #desert #sqamates like the Mojave Shovelnose Snake (Chionactis occipitalis) and Western Banded Gecko (Coleonyx variegatus)! We also encountered various smaller #lizards during the day such as the Great Basin Fence Lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis longipes) and Desert Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus magister), both very interesting relatives of the much more brightly colored #granitespinylizard! The awkward forest lizard. 🫤🦎 If it could speak it would ask you where it is and what it's doing there. . Known as a crowned spiny lizard or crowned pricklenape. . Unlike most other members of the genus, this species prefers staying close to the ground where it relies on its camouflage to stay hidden. . If it wasn't for its camouflage the species would probably be extinct already. This animal was about as dumb as it looks.😅 It never tried to get away while I was photographing it and maybe only moved twice. Probably trying to rely on that camouflage too much. This little bastard scared the shit out of me. I went over to the reptile area to do some care maintenance tasks, and found him sitting to the side of his basking spot completely still. Usually he flees at the smallest hint of my approach. He did not flee this time. He was still and quiet, and when I touched him he felt chilly and there was no visible breathing. I texted my partner because I was absolutely certain that he was dead and I was in tears. While I was telling him about it, I reached in to pick Lizzo up and he moved a little in my hand. Long story short, it's been really difficult for my house to keep up with how cold it's been getting. Overnight a lot of areas of the house have been getting as low as 66°f in places. (So low that I'm running a oil space heater in the gliders' room to keep it warm enough for them.) Naim calmly texted me back, "Could it be brumation?" with a link to an info sheet on Western Fence Lizards. Of course, my first thought was, "I know what brumation is! I don't need an article!" But obviously I needed to be reminded because, while I was holding Lizzo, he started moving more, probably from the warmth of my hand. In my defense he has NEVER brumated before. I put him back on his rock, and he seems to be perking up. So I'm going to keep his basking spot on overnight while I try and find a thermostat to govern temperature for an overnight ceramic heat bulb. This is the first year that he's behaved like this, but he's 4 years old so it might just be that he hasn't really noticed the overnight chill until this winter season. Poor old man. Yoshi is slowly overcoming his shyness and allows me to approach his enclosure for short periods of time, whereas in the past, he ran to hide. Very cool. He has also been allowed to get closer to Zelda, although she seems to intimidate him. Usually, when he comes bobbing up and down with his bright blue chest, she chases him away from her basking spot. The past week, she has been allowing him to hang out in her area. A few months ago, I went on a road trip through the southwest of the USA with some friends. Welcome back, to another #WildlifeWednesday 🐻! Today we have a Granite Spiny Lizard 🦎(Sceloporus orcutti). These guys are identifiable by the spiny scales along their body, giving them a prickly 🌵appearance. The males will sometimes have beautiful coloring from blue-green to purple, as seen here in our photo. These lizards are active during the day ☀️from spring to fall and can usually be seen basking on granite 🪨 boulders. They are inactive during the winter, so you may not see them out right now. As a defense mechanism, these guys will bite and detach their tails to distract a predator so they have time to escape! But don’t worry, the tail will grow back overtime. They feed on small insects 🪲, small lizards, and at times fruit 🍎 and flowers 🌸. What is your favorite reptile? While walking my dog this afternoon we found a cute little buddy. He is so well camouflaged that we almost missed him! This lizard is the Western Fence Lizard and is the only Spiny Lizard found in Georgia. Usually they are not out at this time of year and are thriving in the warmer months, but with the weird 69° weather today he appears to be coming out for a bite. Fence Lizards like to sun bathe. These guys thrive on insects like spiders and tend to be found near/on trees or on the ground near trees. This little guy was found on the ground near a tree, and I did notice there was a little hole in the ground near him. Looking for a snack? 👀 Most likely since these lizards like to sit and wait for their prey and only attack at just the right moment. They are quick and cunning little beasties. That is why their lifespan is so much longer than a lot of other lizard species. Fence Lizards can range in color from the light brown seen here to gray or black. These lizards change their coloring to match their surroundings. During mating season the males have bright blue underbellies to attract the ladies. 🦚 And males tend to be a little smaller than females. I think this lizard we found is a male since male crossband markings are less prominent on their backs compared to females. I love finding and learning about the little creatures surrounding my home. God, thank you for filling this world with so many beautiful, tiny things. ¡Wtf con sus colores! Este macho de lagartija espinosa azul/ blue spiny lizard (Sceloporus cyanogenys) está increíble. Además, media alrededor de 30cm de longitud, de los cuales, más de la mitad era su cola. No está de más decir que es una lagartija completamente inofensiva y tampoco es venenosa. La vi mientras andaba pajareando en @fabricaelporvenir, aunque tuve que esperar a que decidiera salir unos minutos de una grieta en la que se escondía. She’s a Uromastyx ‼️‼️😱 meet and feel free to greet, Red Sonia! __________________ So here i am wondering… do you all *feel* the people/animals around you? Sometimes i come across some critter and I just have this feeling that they are meant to be in my care. The look in her eyes still to this moment says, “i really need someone.” It also looks like she’s tired… she’s had nowhere to hide and been living and EATING around the improper, dangerous, substrate (corncob bedding). I had to make her a quick enclosure with the little extras we had in the cabinet. I look forward to feeding and bonding with her more tomorrow. As soon as I left the local reptile shop with her it was like she was emptied of worry- she fell right asleep.
