This is the little sweetheart badger I crocheted for my 11 month old grandson as an Easter present !! I know it should have been an Easter bunny but I wanted you all to know how persecuted these poor animals are. All down to our cruel uncaring government who continues to avoid listening to all scientific research proving that badgers are not causing TB in cattle. They continue with this horrific badger cull particularly where I live in the South West of England. If we don’t fight to save our badgers, these incredible sentient beautiful creatures who have been living in our world for centuries will become extinct…. and cattle will still continue to spread TB with one another because TB is in the herd and until proper accurate testing is available and proper measures put in place to stop TB from spreading from cow to cow, the cows and the farmers will continue to suffer. Please Tory government listen to the facts and stop this senseless killing. #5MinuteScribbleChallenge Having an Insta pic dump today. I was away in Yorkshire for a week taking a break, now playing catch-up sharing scribbles. I've also managed to come back lurgy riddled (🫤), not feeling my best or with much energy, so most posts are more basic & lacking the usual informative stuff...but hey ho. This is the final one for today. Yesterday (7th Oct) was Badger Day, so obviously I scribbled a Brock! Historically suffering at the hands of badger baiters, they now are being scapegoated as the cause of spreading bovine TB in the UK. Our gov's knee jerk solution is to allow mass culling. Thousands of them are being killed despite scientific/expert reports showing they're not the main cause of issue & there are other more effective ways to control bTB, such as badger vaccination rather than killing...but more importantly shifting focus to the main cause cattle-to-cattle transmission with improved testing - better tests, mandatory annual & pre-movement testing for all cattle, more movement restrictions & rigorous biosecurity on farms. It's estimated that another 150,000 badgers will be culled by 2025. The League Against Cruel Sports is in support of the Badger Trusts call for a nationwide rollout of vaccination programme instead of culling. More info can be found on their websites. The finished Miss Brock, or 'Persecuted' as she is more formally known, in her new home, polished, shiny and I think you'll agree, pretty lush! I'm very pleased with her. The patience and skill of Phil the patinator has paid off as have the foundry staff who worked on her from mould making, to wax, to cast, to machining back to smooth, to patinating and to packing to send to my customer. As you can see, she is a very well behaved badger, and always keeps her claws off of the table, as all good badgers should. More photos of the patination of the Big Brock Persecuted. Here the Patinator Phil is pondering if anything else needs to be done before she is flipped over. The electric fan is there to cool her down as she is too hot to touch. We didn't want to damage those patinated pads and bum which is why she is sitting on a pair of gauntlets. Apparently, if you put a sculpture on a heat proof kevlar mat, the weave leaves a patterned imprint. We also considered the so called 'water soluble' ceramic fiber mat brought in specially, but I was not keen on that at all. Here's why the dairy industry is driving the badger cull 👇 Badgers have been blamed as the primary reason for bovine TB spreading in farmed cows - even though this has NOT been proven by science. Research has shown that 19 out of 20 incidents of infection are the result of the disease spreading from cattle to cattle. Farmers mix and trade infected cattle at markets and during transportation, which goes on to spread the disease to new herds - and of course disease spreads rapidly in factory farms where animals are crammed in so tightly. The early stages of the Big Brock patination and the original postcard image that started it all off, at the bottom of a Badger Trust calendar, by Richard Costins. Try as I might I could never find a photo of this pose taken from the front. For this reason those paws were moved to the left, to the right, lifted off of the ground and put back down again, until the bumps from the back were the same as the photo and I was confident all 4 paws were finally in the right place! Sorting through my badger images ready for the badger patination at the foundry tomorrow. Some of these images are by my greatly missed friend Daniel Belton, who died tragically young, but who had as close a bond with his local family of badgers as a human can get. As a result, his photographs capture rare moments of badgery cheekiness and glee, at snaffling a jam sandwich for the first time, (just imagine discovering jam for the 1st time in your life, when the best you got was the occasional blackberry), as well as the hillarious stunts he set up for them. Other photos in this pile were taken by other friends, still living, whilst their badgers are all dead, thanks to this evil and insane government and its so called 'badger cull' which is leaving vast areas of the UK with no badgers left at all, and creating ecocide via the badger trophic cascade. Sifting through these images, largely taken by people who knew their badger families from cubhood onwards and over several generations, is heartbreaking. Thanks to a late night conversation with the Cotswolds sculptors association I've now got an additional 24 hours to finish Miss Brock and get her to the foundry! Such a relief! VERY LAST SCULPTING DAY! Agggh! So much to do! Last chance to reshape, last day to polish! This will include compressing Miss B's crest using my gas pen and then finish sculpting the crest after repairs. Sorting out her ears and demarkating the stripe of white along their tops. Sort out her right eye using spray on stain remover and a fine brush. Finally I'll give her some whisker and eyebrow dents. So today's conundrum is: how many rows of muzzle whiskers do badgers have? Same badger different place! It's amazing what a change in perception it brings! Now I realise I need to sculpt in my kitchen so that I have a chair on wheels again. It makes it easier to push back from the table and assess better. I've had two breakthroughs last night so hoping for speedy progress today, as its my penultimate day of sculpting. Meet Dolly Parton This little lady got admitted yesterday after being found alone in the day with no sett in site in a busy dog walking park, so it wouldn't have been suitable to leave her. Inspector Charlotte lovingly brought her in. Badgers are extremely complex, even if you were to find an older 'eues open' mobile cub above ground and you may know the sett they came from, simply reintroducing isn't that straight forward there are complicated procedures for re-introducing. Dolly was pretty lethargic, covered in fleas and ticks, cold and quite small for her age so it was vital we started getting proper milk formula into her. It took some time to get her to latch onto the bottle (it must be so alien for her) but she managed it and within 24hrs she had improved so much ❤️ here she is today after her last feed before sending her onto the wonderful team at Folly Wildlife Rescue As we mentioned before, badgers are very complex and require expert care (if you ever come across please seek advice from your local wildlife rescue). She will be creched with other badgers her size which is the best outcome for her and released into an artificial Sett later on in the year all together. Well I left my tall sculptors turntable in Weymouth, by accident, so Miss Brock is now on top of my sewing drawers instead, so that I can access the underside. As the drawers are taller than my turntable I can polish more than I could see before, meaning less time upside down with her paws in the air. 2 of the claws shattered mid polish so that's 3 more to model out of milliput, and if I'm sensible, I'll do a spare this time as well. Making a start on Big Brocks eyes, getting the structure of the skull beneath, the brow and the muzzle to match. Not quite there yet but her left eye is nearly there and when it is I'll match up her right one to go with it. I've done a bit of a wavy mane to her left side, and that'll get more detail after she has had a spell upside down, sorting out her paws and undercarriage. Last night we realised it was time for our badger to bid farewell and make her way back to the wild. After a full examination at our fabulous vet and us having to inject her twice a day she made a massive improvement and was getting stressed in captivity. She was eating well and costing us a fortune in organic peanut butter! Those head scratching parts rotate and resolve them selves, but only by intensive observation at the same time.
