Empathy is being able to put yourself in someone else's shoes. I talk with so many moms who feel frustrated with those around them. Annoyed with others commenting on how they are choosing to parent, feeling alone in situations when you are looking for help from your partner, wondering how the "momfluencers" have it all together. When we look at the world from the perspective of those we are annoyed or frustrated by, we can begin to understand where they are coming from. This does not necessarily mean their behavior is acceptable or that you need to soften boundaries for them. It can, however, help us to be a little more gentle in setting our boundaries. If we understand why our parents are constantly asking why our kids don't clean their plate, we can address their comments in a way that might clarify our choices. If we understand why our partner shuts down in certain situations, we can help them come back to the moment and be more attentive to our needs. If we acknowledge that others have their own thoughts, feelings, and perspectives; we can start to shift our own perspective from, "why do they keep hurting me" to "it makes sense they feel that way" or "this isn't my stuff, it's theirs". AND with that understanding, we can still hold our own boundaries. The first time I heard this statement on the movie 'Good Will Hunting', it moved me so powerfully that I couldn't stop crying. It was such a release to hear those words. My Aunt taught me something a little while ago and it has kind of changed my life. . When thinking of others’ choices, paths, or beliefs, she said, “that is THEIR stuff.” Maybe I’m the only one, but I’ve fretted in the past about other people’s decisions for one reason or another and it’s exhausting. I have no control over that choice because it’s not MY stuff. It’s THEIR stuff. . I’ve been pondering this more than ever. And its not that I don’t want the best for people, in fact I think that’s why I fretted in the first place. I DO want the best for people, but it’s NOT MY STUFF to fret over or decide what “the best” is for them. It’s theirs. . In addition, never suppress a generous thought, promoting from God, or just a gut feeling when you feel the need to help someone or do something kind, and PLEASE, make that effort, but do it out of love and then let their “stuff” be theirs. . So, in thinking about all things going on in “your life,” take a second and just let go of the things that aren’t really YOUR STUFF. Focus on YOU and your stuff. Isn’t your stuff exhausting enough? . Life is challenging right now. Don’t make it more challenging by worrying about other people’s stuff. I am back from the shortest trips home. We are moving my folks out of the family home. So much stuff. So many emotions. So many memories for them. In the end, we were able to come up with a solution. They are going to rent a storage unit and anything that they cannot make a decision on goes to storage. This will help with paralysis that was setting in. My dad is a painter and there is a lot of artwork. We accomplished a fair bit in the 24 hours I was home. There is still so much to do.
