“God’s goodness comes to us amidst the battle and dust of our own suffering, our own long defeat. God always arrives with healing. But he is humble and meek, a king who comes in through the back door of our hearts not to conquer and raze our imperfections away but to hold and heal us by the intimacy of his touch, his presence here with us in the inmost rooms of our suffering. The power of God is radically gentle, never rough with our needs or careless with our yearning. God is fixed upon the restoration of our whole selves and souls, not just the bits that everyone else can see. Yet the very tenderness of his power is something we sometimes treat as his weakness or cruelty because we crave a more visible result.” 🕯️ I reread This Beautiful Truth by @sarahwanders this past month, taking my time with it in the early mornings when light was dim and the house hushed. The first time I read it, I raced through it. This time I savored it slowly, a chapter at a time. Rarely have I read a book that spoke to me so much; that gave me so much hope. Sarah takes the most broken parts of our world, and gives us a God who sees, who understands, and who heals. I know those things about God already, but Sarah makes them feel real; touchable. She reminds us that God IS real, IS touchable, through the mercies he grants us of everyday beauties that we so often pass over. That we can literally “taste and see that the Lord is good” through the feasting of good food with friends, through the touch of a loved one,and through the endless beauty in and around us. 🕯️ I’ve been in a hard season, with some personal pain and longings that have gone unmet as of now. Reading through this book was a reminder that even though things are not happening in the time frame I would like, God is present, God cares, God weeps with me, and God offers me good things still. 🕯️ What are you currently reading? Let me know if there’s a book I need to add to my (never-ending) tbr! 🕯️ #thisbeautifultruth #sarachclarkson #christianbooks #theodicy #shirelibrary

Reflection: No, Not Like That By John Tillman A common objection to faith is that if God is all-powerful and all-good, how does he allow evil to exist? Habakkuk has his own version…He objects that God is not taking action. God says, “I’m already doing something about it. The Babylonians are on their way.” Habakkuk…“No, God. Not like that!” Perhaps Habakkuk just wanted a new king or a few judges replaced, but God saw deeper problems. God takes both justice and mercy more seriously than us. He knows better than us the costs of holding them both. In the parable of the tares in the wheat, Jesus implies that evil is more intimately bound up with us than we think. The tares cannot be pulled up without damaging the wheat. When we ask God to pull up weeds, he can see the weed's roots are tangled around our own. We must trust God when he chooses to address evil, whether it is in our hearts, in our institutions, or in our countries. More than anything else, let us stay in dialogue with God, as Habakkuk does. We don’t have to hold back our doubts, fears, or objections. Welcome to our #storyformedfridays book group where we’ll be helping you to nurture a story formed life for you and your family 📚 Our theme today is beauty, and there has been no other book as beautiful to me as ‘This Beautiful Truth’ by @sarahwanders “Beauty came and saved me- from darkness, from unbelief, from destructive despair, from the bad answers that obscured his [God’s] goodness, from the closed horizons of grief and this is the story I have to tell… It allowed me to understand my illness not as God’s inexplicable will for me, but as the evil he came to banish by his own presence.” ✍️ If mental illness is something you live with, or you are looking on as a beloved endures this kind of darkness, this book is for you. Sarah reminds us that, “God breaks into our darkness in a tangible way, teaching us to trust his love and to hope for healing”. She explores the undeniable truth that beauty can and will save the world; because Jesus is beauty Himself, a voice singing into our suffering, beckoning us toward restoration. Through beauty we don’t just “taste and see” that the Lord himself is good, but we behold the goodness as the body of Christ creates beauty, shows us the beauty of kindness of fellowship, and worships the truly beautiful in the midst of darkness. Sarah’s book is broken into two parts; ✨Part One: ‘The truth beauty tells’ Sarah’s articulate, vivid, and descriptive language captures something of the terrible battle that ravages a mind of one who is suffering with mental illness. She lends imagination to those who have not endured this devastating darkness; she gut wrenchingly makes it clearer for us to understand what our fellow broken souls endure. ✨Part Two: ‘The world it calls us to create’, reminds us that beauty is also found in the world itself, amongst the darkness and fear of the future. How has beauty impacted your life? As for me, my feet had almost stumbled, My steps had nearly slipped. Pride-set against the heaven-earth, I said, ‘How can we enter the Green Kingdom? Where is the way in its laws?’ The journey continues. I’m back with my project The Bright Fields, where I’m taking a Psalm a week and walking it through countryside with photography and poetry. Book III of the Psalms starts with Psalm 73, a clarion call for new thinking. It’s one thing to intellectually uphold a theodicy – an idea about God in the world that understands his redeeming influence (through a kind of black-and-white moralism). It’s another thing to live it. The ancient song-writer finds the living it to be fractured and fragile. In fact, something else is needed, something revelatory and something that deals with the human condition. It’s next week’s second half of the Psalm where the ice thaws, and from there the ‘living it’ is going to be my view for the whole of Book III – a close-up view of a new green law. #Psalm73 #photopsalter #ice #icecolumns #theodicy #Asaph

*REVIEW* A question everyone eventually asks, a strong position, a God-glorifying view. Scott Christensen with @prpbooks has served us well here in this volume. His larger book ‘What About Evil?’ has been edited and shrunk down to a more digestible package in this latest edition here. What is God’s relationship to sin? Since He is totally sovereign it is true to say that God was not surprised when Genesis 3 occurred. But while that’s true, what does this imply? Christensen, in these pages, guides us through what I think is the best view to take on this question, namely, that God ordained the fall for His glory, to make much of the glory of Christ. Many thanks to @prpbooks for sending me this copy to review and post. Anytime a robust academic work is made more accessible to a larger audience is a good thing. This is a great book and worth your careful consideration. Is There Purpose in the Pain? What is the purpose of your pain? These questions are tough to answer. Why? It is difficult to find meaning in life when you live with pain. But pain may just be a path to finding and fulfilling your divine purpose. We all experience pain and loss during our life. At the time, it can be difficult to understand the purpose behind it. God Uses Our Wounds to make way for us. We try to avoid pain, but God wants to use it. But God redeems pain and suffering for a greater and glorious good. He allows us to suffer to prepare us for our purpose. Join us in this study to see how God used the pains Joseph went through for his greatest glory. There are many times when serious illness takes people to the brink of their worldview and theology. Sometimes lives spent in safety, rewarded diligence, poise and comfort are confronted with immense loss of control where all the skills that served them well before fall flat. This, as much as any diagnosis or hospitalization, is part of the grief and disorientation. • Sometimes people discover new capacity in their relationship with their self, their God and their family and forge a new path to allow for their real experience. (God is a healer and it looks like I might be dying. I will hope for what I can and grieve what I can.) Sometimes people constrict and insist on applying their prior life to a foreign circumstance. (I am not doubting my miracle and therefore will not talk about Plan B or allow my children to be sad.) It’s hard to know who will be able to recalculate and who will not. Both are painful but from experience, the former adjustment requires less internal and relational dissonance. Turning into the skid protects so much. • I don’t know if this makes sense to anyone. I kind of wish none of us understood it. I believe we largely do the best we can with whatever we have at the time. If we have the privilege of not being ill, let’s practice being open, changing our mind and entertaining fewer absolutes. Maybe it will help us survive the most threatening losses. 💛 • • • #palliativecare #griefwork #emotionalcapacity #resilience #theodicy #theologyofsuffering #seriousillness #prognosis #hospitalchaplain

• Defeating Evil • In ‘Defeating Evil: How God glorifies Himself in a Dark World’, Scott Christensen explores the controversial & contentious subject of theodicy as he endeavours to show how the existence of evil is part of the grand story of what God is doing to restore all things. Christensen explains that throughout the history of Christianity, two opposing theological approaches to the subject of theodicy have been used in an attempt to best make sense of the darkness in a world that is governed by a good God. The two approaches being ‘The Free-Will Defense’ (Arminianism), and ‘The Greater-Good Defense’ (Calvinism). Christensen’s treatment of the topic is thoroughly Reformed, and therefore it comes as no surprise that he rejects ‘The Free-Will Defense’ on the grounds of it being predicated on a man-centred theology and therefore advocates for a theodicy of his own which slightly varies from ‘The Greater-Good Defense’ called ‘The Greater-Glory Defense’. The Greater-Glory Defense sees God using evil for a greater good as The Greater-Glory Defense does, but has a central emphasis on God’s ultimate purpose in creating the world as a “theatre to supremely magnify His glory”. Christensen explains how a proper understanding of God’s holiness, sovereignty and goodness are vital to establishing a biblical theodicy as these attributes fundamentally affect how we view God’s decrees & purpose for evil in the world. Chapters conclude with study questions and a decent glossary is found at the back of the book. While ‘What About Evil’ is the more comprehensive read, ‘Defeating Evil’ will appeal to a broader audience as it is the more accessible version in comparison, and would be a good book for anyone seeking a biblical rationale for the “problem of evil” whether they’re a believer or an unbeliever. I’d also recommend checking out Christensen’s podcasts/interview on this topic too. This book was sent by @prpbooks in exchange for an honest review. #defeatingevil #scottchristensen #prpbooks #reviewcopy #theodicy

This profound quote delves into the age-old philosophical conundrum known as theodicy, which grapples with the existence of evil in a world purportedly governed by a benevolent and omnipotent deity. It presents two possible scenarios: either God desires to eradicate evil but lacks the power to do so, or God possesses the power to eliminate evil but chooses not to. Both possibilities raise profound theological and philosophical questions about the nature of divinity, free will, and the problem of suffering. This quote challenges us to contemplate the complexities of existence and the mysteries of divine will, inviting introspection and exploration of our beliefs about the nature of good and evil, the human condition, and the ultimate purpose of existence.⁣ ⁣ #TheMillennialStoic #StoicismDaily #StoicPhilosophy

Is It Unspiritual to be Depressed? ☔️ Paul Ritchie I recently watched a reel here on instagram where a woman boldly declared, “Asking a depressed person how they could be depressed when the world is so beautiful, is the equivalent of asking an asthmatic why they can’t breathe because there is air all around them.” And while this was intended to be humorous (and I did crack a smile), it’s also absolutely true. And that’s why we NEED books like this one from Paul, who explains, “I want to draw on my own experiences and thoughts on issues related to depression and anxiety. I am coming from an evangelical Christian perspective and I want to show you how the good news about Jesus is good news for your mental health. I want to do something to take away the stigma and misunderstanding that surrounds mental illness, particularly in church circles.” ‘Loved by God in the Midst of Pain’ is the explanatory title of this book, and it captures the heart completely. Paul desires his readers to know just how fully and deeply they are loved by God, no matter their mental health condition, fears or will to live, what others around them might say, or even if their depression remains a hidden or unspoken of. There is so much freedom and comfort to be found within these pages, and two points which moved my heart to rejoice and be glad in the Lord were; 🌧️ Deep and dark seasons of depression are a season and do come to an end. If we can remember that we are not alone, and seek the help we need, often we will look back on those moments and be glad that we’re alive and that we didn’t die. 🌿Jesus felt deep anguish to the point of death when he was in the garden, but he did not sin. I had never connected the two! In this broken world where we can endure so much, our grief and trauma sometimes compounds to that point, and personally I’ve wondered whether I’m sinning in my pain because surely with the joy of the Lord I shouldn’t feel that way. But Jesus shows us that sadness and depression itself is not a sin. If you’re a person who struggles with mental health, or you desire to help those who do, this book is for you! Grateful for this gifted book @christianfocuspublications

There's something you may not know about me: I'm an ordained Christian pastor. I have been for two decades. This may be surprising for any of you not used to seeing women in ministry in this way, or to any of you who read this page and just didn't realize the person hosting it was from that background. Both are totally okay. I want to say that I have always wanted to keep this space open and meaningful to everyone. Grief is universal This isn't a Christian grieving page. It's a grief page, and all are welcome. But if you are a person of faith - which can include any religious understanding - one thing that is also universal is the struggle that can come with faith after we have had great loss. And we can feel really guilty with that struggle. We have too often been taught that questions, doubts or uncertainty make us bad people of faith. After all - isn't faith ABOUT believing even when it's hard? Sure. But that doesn't mean that we don't struggle with it. That we don't have questions. That we don't feel mad at God or find that we can't make sense of the things we once believed anymore. I've done a few podcasts about this book. This one is a little different - it really leans into questions of faith, theology and God. This one may not be for you, and that is okay. But if you are someone who has wondered how to make sense of God in the midst of your grief, this may be meaningful. Thank you @salvationistwomen for this conversation! Without this window of revelation opened up for the reader to look through, the suffering of Job—and thereby, suggestions as to the reasons for other human suffering—would forever remain a mystery. However, God condescends to humanity in an act of grace, and in the book of Job, lets man in on his secret councils (cf. Genesis 1:26-27). Yet, this structural device is only a small indication of what is more evidently revealed in the content of the book. #mystery #bookofjob #bible #epistomology #truth #goodness #beauty #knowledge #theodicy #theology #christianhumanism

Any old farts out there remember this one? Theodicy "Succumb" 7" on GWB Records (1994). GWB put out a few decent 7"s from little known/short lived Brit DM bands, most of which are available still without having to break the bank (most were limited to 1,000, which was pretty damn generous all things considered). . . . . #theodicy #succumb #gwbrecords #deathmetal #metal7inch

Imagine sitting at a table near C.S. Lewis and overhearing his conversations about prayer with his close friend. What you hear is not systemic theology, but observation, questions and revealing insights into Lewis’ mind, and devotional life. https://byfaith.org/2024/01/06/letters-to-malcolm-chiefly-on-prayer-by-c-s-lewis-book-review/ #CSLewis #BookReview #Culture #Discipleship #Faith #PaulBackholer #Backholer #ByFaith #ByFaithMedia #ChristianArticle #ChristianReads #LetterstoMalcolm #ChieflyonPrayer #Pray #Prayer #Praying #Theodicy #God #Jesus #Divine #ChristianBelief #Litergy #BibleStudy #Apologetics #MagdalenCollege #Classics #OxfordUniversity #CambridgeUniversity #SignatureClassics #TheKilns

The first thing people often wanted to do when I was first bereaved was cheer me up or talk me out of my deep despair — but I think lamenting with me, showing that they too were hurt by the loss, affirming that my lost loved one mattered, would have been the better path. #lament #lamenting #theologyoflament #theodicy #antitheodicy #theology #theopsychology #grief #griefjourney #emotionalfirstaid #mygodwhyhastthouforsakenme #mygodwhyhaveyouforsakenme

"A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?" -‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭20:24‬ I read The Chronicles of Narnia for the first time when I was about 13-14. Hello! My name is Danyka David, and I am a fourth year Huron student studying Psychology and Philosophy. I am very passionate about social issues and change, specifically involving Indigenous advocacy. I enjoy spending my free time volunteering or working on independent research in topics that interest me! For the 2023 CURL Conference I chose to discuss one of my favourite metaphysical debates: that if God exists, why does he allow evil and suffering to exist within our world. I hope you enjoy reading and if you want to discuss this idea further, my direct messages are always open! @danykawh1te Thank you!

We Are All Philosophers: A Christian Introduction to Seven Fundamental Questions by John Frame is a philosophy starter from a Calvinistic perspective. This is a short (~150 pages) book split up into two parts. The first part has the seven fundamental questions. Each chapter ends with a glossary of terms used in that chapter, and discussion questions. The second part has letters on philosophical topics, some of which were already covered in the previous chapters, so there are times it feels redundant. The first chapter asks, “What is everything made of?” In this chapter, Frame briefly goes over early Greek philosophers like Thales, Anaximenes, Anaximander, Aristotle, and Parmenides. This chapter includes things like atomism and how Democritus believed atoms moved in a single direction, while Epicurus believed the bumped around together. Frame then moves onto the 17th-19th century with Leibniz’s theory of “tiny minds”, Wittgenstein, then Holism, pantheism, and the real God. Frame's view of evil will make many readers squirm. In the second chapter, “Do I have free will?” after quoting Romans 9:14-24 Frame says, “… God does indeed cause sin and evil, though he rightly holds Satan and humans responsible for their wicked acts. This is certainly mysterious, and Christians should not apologize for the mystery. If God were not mysterious to us, he would not be God. To say that God causes sin troubles many people, but Scripture says this often, and we need to take account of that. God does bring about evil events…" (pg 33-34) The second half is an appendix of letters. I didn't like how some of the replies cross-referenced his other books and would have preferred to have direct quotes, since I don't own his other books. Regardless, I found many of the replies interesting, while I disagreed with many. 💜 Rachel #johnframe #philosophy #apologetics #calvinism #reformedtheology #theologymatters #christian #christianbookreview #christianbook #god #jesus #theodicy #christianbookstagram

The latest episode of (Re)thinking Faith is out now! This week I had the joy of being joined by my friend Jonathan Foster to take a deep, personal dive into the reality of grief. • Everybody has experienced grief in one way or another. Perhaps for you it was the loss of a loved one, the loss of a child, the end of a relationship, the loss of a community, or the death of God. Whatever it is, your grief is welcome here. • Often times when experiencing grief, well meaning people offer us silly and hurtful advice like “all things happen for a reason” or “God must have needed another angel”. Jonathan doesn’t offer trite and theologically problematic answers to our pain and suffering, but instead invites us into his own story of suffering and loss. • If you are looking for quick fixes and bullshit answers to your grief and suffering this episode is not for you… BUT if you want to take a deep and honest look at grief and pain and suffering and experience it together, with love, wisdom, and compassion then pull up a chair, grab a drink and let’s chat. • Enjoy.

The best way to discover the goal of Satan’s utterance is to compare it with God’s previous command. In the beginning, the Creator gave two commandments: The first was positive, the second negative (2:16, 17). He first created free space for humans, because He is the Guarantor of ultimate freedom: “‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden’” (vs. 16). Thus, God commands freedom. He created Adam and Eve as free moral beings; but in order for them to enjoy this freedom, to be happy and grow in a healthful environment, they needed to accept God-given borders and limits. This is why God gave the restriction in the second command: “‘you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (vs. 17). The gift of freedom presupposes choice and free will. Humans must always acknowledge that they are created beings. They need to cultivate their total dependency on God. God’s generosity was plainly explained—Everything I created is for you except one fruit. To ensure their freedom, Adam and Eve needed to respect their boundaries. Then and now, restrictions must be kept. Even in a perfect world, there are limits that must be guarded, for discipline is a crucial ingredient of life. Humans need to accept that they are not gods. By accepting limits, Adam and Eve were free; they had a safe space in which they could grow and develop their potential, true humanity, and the image of God in which they were created.—Jiří Moskala Click the link in our bio to read full article. . . #theodicy #cosmicconflict #sin #salvation #trust #Gen3 #adventisttheologicalsociety #adventisttheology #adventism #adventists #adventistchurch #seventhdayadventist #seventhdayadventism #sdachurch #sdatheology #adventisttheology #sda #seventhdayadventistchurch #sdachurch
