I loved #tiborfischer’s #thethoughtgang when I first read it over 25 years ago. I revisited it with some trepidation as I did not want to tarnish one of my gods. The first paragraph is still one of the best and funniest ever written, and hooked me right back in. Perhaps I am getting a bit old, but I found that the madcap pace left me a bit out of breath, whereas previously it had left me breathless in an exhilarated way. However, it was lovely to read something that was so full of the joy of writing, knowledge and fun! Everything I have read recently has been about an ‘issue’ or has been too doom-laden - this was the perfect antidote. Perhaps the book was more appealing to the 20 year-old me, but revisiting it was like revisiting that youth. Zany, absurd, madcap and fun. Farsi scherzare all’infinito dalle irritanti note a margine di David Foster Wallace o correggere da decine (centinaia?) di pagine sproloquianti di Jonathan Franzen... è una conditio sine qua non diventare una persona migliore. Autoprescriversi una ricetta e autosomministrarsi una suppostona a base di grottesco e paradossale in dosaggio smisuratamente oltre il q. b., o sei Albert Hofmann o sei masochista. Se però vuoi proprio esagerare e guardarti dentro dentro, se realizzi di aver sentito la chiamata (domani da sobrio capirai se magari ti eri solo fissato) e di dover percorrere i gradini del grottesco e del paradossale come unica e giusta via per l’ascensione ascetica e la pura trascendenza... beh, sappi che di Ignatius J Reilly, ce n’è uno solo. E che La Gang del pensiero è Una banda di idioti che non ce l’ha fatta.

Lettura n 2 della serie "letture leggere di aprile". Questa volta ho optato per un Tibor Fischer fresco fresco di nuova traduzione, a 20 di distanza dalla lettura del libro che gli ha dato fama, plauso e un mucchio di premi: "Sotto il culo della rana". Tibor ha cambiato genere, questo sicuramente, non ci sono più gli aneddoti dell'Ungheria, delle persecuzioni e dei tentativi di fuga. Il registro attuale è assolutamente comico: seguiamo le vicende criminali dell'assurda coppia costituita da un prof di filosofia di Cambridge vecchio pelato e sovrappeso, e del compare che raccatta per strada, un ex carcerato senza un braccio e una gamba molto incline alla violenza e ai colpi di scena. Durante le rapine parlano di filosofia, e per questo si sono soprannominati "La gang del pensiero". Ci sono autori che dopo un inizio col botto perdono smalto. Mi sa che Tibor è uno di questi. La vicenda comica non riesce a brillare perché manca una vera e propria ossatura che la supporti, che faccia commuovere il lettore, che lo ancori alla storia.
