The final body of work in the exhibition, Smoke and Mirrors (2016), is presented in the last space of the gallery, serving as a definitive coda to the themes of the exhibition. This series changes visual gears once more, this time the works are rendered in charcoal and ink on paper. It’s taken me a time to post about Pat Hoffie’s exhibition ‘this mess we’re in’ at QUT Art Museum for two reasons. First, if I say something dumb Pat WILL tell me (Love you for this Pat, truly! 😅😂) But secondly, and more chiefly, the exhibition is so well timed to the current state of the world that it makes me want to go on a big rant about the current global shitstorm we’re living through, and anything I say won’t do either the works or the issues justice. So… I really think you should go see the exhibition if you’re in Brisbane. It’s beautiful, and quite ethereal in parts, and the works are way more impressive in real life than reproductions can capture. But also spend real time looking for the pop culture references layered within the disaster scenes, and what they reflect about society. And sit with your thoughts and emotions about all the ‘stuff’ that’s going on around the world right now, and how Sweet F. A. has changed since Pat started making these works. Maybe you’ll come out feeling reinvigorated to do something about the state of the world. Or maybe you won’t. Such is the actual mess we’re living in. Either way the exhibition is worth your time and contemplation, as is the accompanying publication, and highlights an artist whose been instrumental in building Queensland’s art scene over many years as a practitioner, academic and mentor 🧡

It’s day 4 of the #nnghalloweenvinyl tag and we’re focusing on girl power 🔌. I wanted to take this slot to highlight an artist that I’ve been completely won over by this year: PJ Harvey. It started with a Goodwill find of her 2000 album “Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea”. For the last two years, Arlo McKinley's music has been playing quite a lot at home. In fact, he has already taken over from other artists who are already classics in my vinyl rotation regarding the so-called 'americana' genre that can also be framed within country-rock, folk-rock or alt-country. Without having the impact that Zach Bryan has had, Arlo McKinley has given us two albums in the last three years that can easily be listened to one after the other. By that, I don't mean that they are very similar, but at no time does the quality drop. The first of them, 'Die Midwestern', could be considered the rawest of the two I'm posting today, even because it also goes a bit outside the musical style to inspect other terrains, as it happens in one of the most striking songs for its music as for its name, 'Bag Of Pills'.The album, based on storytelling in Ohio, describes personal relationships and musings about life, direct and indirect contact with drugs, as well as a certain anti-establishment spirit that does not appear explicitly in the lyrics of the songs. As for the second and most recent album, 'This Mess We're In', we can appreciate an evolution to a more melodic sound, or closer to the roots of the alt-country sound, always without lowering the level of quality, which, in my opinion, goes up a notch. The theme of the album continues to be based on the author's experiences, explained openly, but with a touch of optimism. In short, Arlo Mckinley has recorded two solid works that make him join my rotation of music of this genre, which plays so often on my turntable, on the other hand.
