Many thanks to @netgalley and @orangeskyaudio for the complimentary audiobook copy of Glory Be by Danielle Arceneaux I had such high hopes going into this book after seeing positive reviews from both: @thereadingchemist & @bookitqueen I usually love books that both of these terrific Bookstagrammers love, this time I have to announce an: #UnpopularOpinionAlert: I DNF’d at 42 percent. I couldn’t get around being bothered by the opening scene (and others) which I know are meant to be funny, but nobody who has ever worked in the service industry is gonna find belittling a barista in training to be entertaining or think “oh what a cranky lady, isn’t she relatable” and that’s what the author is going for. Being a barista is HARD. I’d like to see the MC, Glory go behind the counter and whip up a coffee drink without using the training manual that the new barista is using. I usually LIKE a cranky character - there are plenty of ways to let us know a character is a curmudgeon, but this wasn’t it. I don’t want to hang out with anyone (that isn’t meant to be a villain) who disparages servers or baristas, etc... - to me that’s how you let me know a character is sans morals and innate goodness. Many thrillers I’ve read do this to great effect. Then there’s Glory’s daughter (who is entering the first stage of divorce) who’s justifying why it’s totes fine to cheat with her married love interest-because his wife just doesn’t understand him/treat him well enough. *Big Eye Rolling* The cliche was cliche-ing so hard. And y’all, I could not. There are many, many plots and subplots…TW for dog fighting, bee attacks, illegal gambling…the suicide or murder of a nun, drug addiction, illegal drugs, illegal gambling, hoarding, divorces, cheating/affairs, environmental law…it’s a lot a LOT. Not every book works for every reader, and I do urge you to check out Dr. Toya & Cayla’s reviews for their very different takes on this one, the first book in a series. ❓What is the last book that didn’t live up to your expectations? Možná se k tomuhle příspěvku trochu hodí #unpopularopinionalert, ale oficiálně prohlašuji, že: MILUJU BÝT TĚHOTNÁ! 😄 A to i přes to, že si stále pamatuju ty týdny v prvním trimestru, kdy jsem měla žaludek jako na vodě a ztratila se mi veškerá radost z jídla 🙏🏻 (a otevřeně tímto děkuji @healthy_by_cerna za tvou cennou konzultaci ♥️) I přes to, že jsou momenty, kdy bych vyplakala tuny slz. 🤭 I přes to, že to bylo těhotenství poměrně neplánované a přišlo tím pádem dříve, než jsme čekali. ♥️ Zkrátka i přes to, že to vždycky není sluníčkový 🌞, otevřeně se přiznávám, že si užívám všechny ty špatný i dobrý dny. 😊 Užívám si sledovat změny, které ve mně toto těhotenství iniciuje, a to především ty niterný♥️ Užívám si sledovat svoji prvorozenou dceru Elí, jak se mění z jedináčka právě na prvorozenou♥️ Užívám si zkrátka každý den…. Cítím se žensky, zranitelně, křehce, probouzí se ve mně nová něžnost.. ♥️ Užívám si zároveň i to napojení na tohle miminko, ten vnitřní klid… To, že nepotřebuji žádný potvrzení zvenčí (lékařská společnost), abych věděla, že se všechno děje přesně, jak má. A že miminko roste, je zdravé,.. 🥰 Je to pro mě moc hezký období. Je tak hezký, že ač bych si pro to asi musela hledat nového otce, protože ten aktuální už má teď pocit, že má o jedno dítě navíc, než plánoval… 😅 (ale i to je samozřejmě legitimní pocit, jak u mužů, tak u žen) Tak si v tom všem omámení aktuálním stavem dokážu představit, že to za 5, 6, 7 (..) let absolvuji ještě jednou… Představa, že všechny tyhle změny prožívám naposledy, je pro mě fakt nepředstavitelná 😱 Tak já jen tak… věřím, že ač je spoustu žen, které zažívají v těhotenství ty nejhorší dny, týdny, měsíce života z mnoha životních i zdravotních důvodů. Věřím, že je i spoustu těch, co si těhotenství taky užívaj ♥️ Přijímám to samozřejmě s pokorou, ještě vůbec nevím, jaký bude porod, šestinedělí, všeobecně první rok… třeba mě to přejde 😆 Ale teď je to tak. 🚨Unpopular opinion alert🚨 This book was literally all over the bookstagram and literally I had to get my hands on this one. It had so many amazing reviews over the bookish community. But to my disappointment, this was not my type of book. I had a lot of issues with this book which I am not going to highlight in here, but yes had very high hopes on this, and I was left disappointed. I felt that the plot of the book was okish. Desperate mother trying to find son, under truth behind his disappearance is a common plot for a lot of books. I would like to say that I was one twist towards the end which had me surprised to the core, but overall the book ending was not as good as I thought would be after reading the bookstagram reviews. I brag last month I did a money mindset-reset with one of my clients, where she was like "I can't make money" and this week she put out an offering and called in $13,200 of sales within 3 days! ~ thirteen thousand dollars within 3 days ~ And when I say she couldn't make money, I mean she had been trying for years, and getting into debt and struggling so hard that she gave up on her business completely... #UnpopularOpinionAlert 🚨 Ok so I know you don’t really need *another* review of this bookstagram favorite, but I have a lot of thoughts that I need to unpack! This book should’ve been everything I love in a story (and is scarily similar to my own life). The main character works in publishing (me), has a deep love of New York City (also me), and has a close relationship with her sister (same but x3). There’s even a character who’s identical to my husband—a Cornell engineer who now works in construction for a family company (he’s not the main love interest so a little besides the point but I’m still shook that she basically wrote my husband!!). But there was something I can’t quite put my finger on that kept this book from being a slam dunk for me. Maybe it was the fact that there wasn’t as much “will they or won’t they” as I was led to believe or as @emma_not_watson_reads mentions in her review, we’re never actually *shown* Nora being a high powered career woman/shark a la Sandra Bullock in The Proposal, we’re just told about it. I’m definitely in the minority here so take my review with a grain of salt but I’m curious, do you usually agree with bookstagram favorites or find yourself not always loving them? PS This is also my post for #CampKneadToRead’s Summer Nostalgia prompt. Does anything make you think of childhood summer more than a bowl of watermelon?!

There is no quick fix. 💘 There is a lot of noise out there in the social media world around mentors claiming you can shortcut your way to success and achieve the results they currently have (input $$$ revenue, lifestyle etc) if you just follow their methodology. And by doing this you can avoid the pain they faced along the way. It sounds something like: “Let me help you get to where I am without any of the sacrifice or hardship I experienced along the way…” Sounds sensible right? 🤔 Of course we want that!! It speaks directly to our biochemistry. The human mind is wired to avoid pain at all costs. We are wired to move away from pain and towards pleasure. So these promises sound so enticing. Who wouldn’t want to arrive at an incredibly successful, fulfilled, abundant life without any discomfort along the way?? I truly believe that it’s sensible to check out the footsteps of someone who has walked the path before you. It’s useful to have a map of where you are heading. I myself work with mentors and guides and know first-hand that tapping into their knowledge shortens timelines and has been a vital component in my success. BUT what if learning to embrace any discomfort experienced along the way is a necessary part of the learning process.🌟 What if in avoiding the discomfort we lose valuable lessons and the resilience we would otherwise have developed. 🌟 What if being in the discomfort is fundamental to the joy that we experience when we come out the other side?🌟 ✨Let’s stop making discomfort wrong. ✨Let’s stop making it something we should avoid at all costs. ✨Let’s instead prep ourselves to receive its valuable lessons. Once we stop fighting and avoiding discomfort, we remove the tension. We have more compassion. Our nervous systems can relax. And if it does appear we’re equipped to move through it so much faster. Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney ‼️UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT‼️ This is a DNF for me. After I read Normal People, I was not impressed. I saw a lot of mixed reviews about it, but truthfully it wasn’t my cup of tea. After countless rave reviews for BWWAY, I wanted to give Sally Rooney another chance. Unfortunately, this book was also incredibly disappointing. I will say, I admire Sally Rooney’s writing. It contains so much depth and it truly feels like she pours her entire soul into her writing. I just don’t enjoy the content or style of her books. They are just not my taste, and that’s okay. Let me know if you feel the same way about this book, or if you feel this way about any book!!👇🏻

🚨UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT:🚨 Do you ever see a book all over with rave reviews & it makes you want to get the book asap? How bad does it suck when you buy into the hype & the book falls completely flat? #EmpireofPain - So many have said this massive book read quickly & that it totally holds your attention. I would disagree. It’s biographical & historical...and boring. It doesn’t have the pace of other narrative nonfiction books (like Bad Blood) that kept me glued to the pages. Instead, I found myself skimming, and then skipping, so many parts. Maybe it’s because I already have some background knowledge about Big Pharma and/or maybe Patrick Radden Keefe isn’t for me (I DNFd Say Nothing), but this one just didn’t work for me. #CryinginHMart - I know, I know. This has all the makings of a book I would absolutely eat up - mother loss, grief, and cancer - but I felt completely disconnected during my entire reading experience. Something about the author’s writing made the whole thing feel forced, and while I’m in no position to evaluate a person’s relationships or experiences, it just didn’t connect with me. It’s obviously something about the book because this was the second time I picked this one up hoping it would work. The first time I tried it, I blamed it on the timing (it was around Mother’s Day), but it was just as much a struggle the second time around. I also don’t think I’m a fan of “foodie” books (I DNFd Save Me the Plums). I’ll definitely proceed with caution from here on out. #TheHouseintheCeruleanSea - I was pretty uncomfortable with this book from the very beginning. I almost DNFd based on the name of a character alone. Lucy, short for Lucifer and the son of the devil, was a hard concept for me to get behind. I definitely think it’s a personal thing, but I just don’t do well with any sort of glorification of the devil, and while some may argue I missed the point, I don’t think I did. Also, based on the cover, this is a middle grade book, but the content felt more YA and I also felt the allusion to a developing romantic relationship was a bit upper level. I would have been uncomfortable had my child read this…and I actually bought it for her!
📙Book Review-dopehri by Pankaj Kapur ( Translated from Hindustani by Rahul Soni) Published by @harperperennial My Rating: 3/5 ⭐ #unpopularopinionalert 'dopehri' felt like a 90+ pages Long Short Story, not a novella. Read it in 60 minutes flat without skipping a single word. ⭐The author, Pankaj Kapur is an illustrious actor, and we know he has an impeccable command over the Hindi language. Probably, this was what triggered the great expectations from this little book. I really wish I'd read 'dopehri' in Hindi instead of English. While reading I could imagine the magic of the storytelling in Hindi, but the transliteration killed the joy for me. Literal translations sound so funny, like on pg. 50 '...his banian stretched to accommodate a fifty-two-inch chest.' In Hindi, that idiom would beautifully capture the jest of the moment, but in English it makes no sense! ☀️ 'Dopehri' is a Hindi word which means 'afternoon'- when the sun is bearing down with all its heat. The idea of 'Winter afternoons' however evoke emotions, and that is what I expected from the book as I began to read. 👵🏽Amma Bi is an elderly widow who lives alone in her deserted Lucknow Haveli. Every afternoon, at precisely 3 o'clock, footsteps are heard outside but she's unable to see who it is! It terrifies her so much that she considers moving to an old-age home, but finally takes in a lodger instead, a young woman named Sabiha. Amma Bi's motherly instincts are harvested by Sabiha from Jaunpur (Amma Bi's mother's village), and Jumman- the household help is also infatuated by her. When Sabiha finds herself in trouble, Amma Bi comes to her rescue. I would have loved the story more if the author had let it steep and flow into more details of the old- world Lucknowi lifestyle and charms. Felt like the storytelling just whizzed through, gliding over the Lucknowi Haveli only for the sake of giving Amma Bi a premise. It felt as if the mystery and spook quotient that was building up at the start was deserted mid-way and the story stepped into a terribly simplistic by-lane whichwas developed into the main-street by the end of the story. Another Wednesday, another #unpopularopinionalert. Not sure who needs to hear this but you don’t need a flurry of clothes made of hemp and bamboo to practice sustainable fashion. Any system that doesn’t include EVERYONE would not work and will always be elitist. So how do you embrace slow fashion & sustainability? 1) Mend, alter or repurpose what you have. 2) Unlearn the stigma around preloved clothes and shop second hand. 3) Rent clothes for special occasions. 4) Hand wash or use a mesh laundry bag as it prevents shredded micro plastics getting into our water systems. 5) Swap clothes you don’t need. @wearenuw and @swishupuk are great places to do just that (use my code on the bio for Swishup). 6) #restyleandrewear your wardrobe. Unpopular opinion alert.… I hate most holidays. I always have and I wonder if I always will. Like, I don’t care for any of them… Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day. I’m *trying* to come around about Mother’s Day and Father’s Day now that we have Tommy (I’d give myself a six out of 10 on effort this year). And don’t even get me started on Halloween. If that could just go away, I wouldn’t miss it. Ok, fine… I did enjoy dressing up Tommy this year as Bob Ross and walking to three houses in our neighborhood. I can still get behind MLK Day, Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day because they’re about honoring others’ sacrifices and service, but other than that, I’m all for a holiday-less calendar year to be completely honest. 😬 It’s not that I’m a curmudgeon or anything. I’m really a kind, fun person who loves people (I promise!!). But I can’t stand the forced gatherings and intense expectations around holidays in general. One month ago we got the news - phase 2 of re-opening was about to start, and photographers were officially given the "ok" to get back to work. I've only been back behind my camera for part of that time, and you might have noticed that outside of my IG stories, I've almost all but disappeared from posting... And honestly, I'm not even sorry 😜⠀ ⠀ I went from being excited to re-open, to feeling overwhelmed pretty quickly. I had sessions to reschedule, new regulations to implement, and my own personal anxieties to deal with - how was I going to go back to work in the middle of a pandemic when I live that #chronicillness life?! ⠀ I know a lot of people can relate. Trying to do anything 'normal' just doesn't feel the same anymore, and I'm trying to find a way to turn it into a positive thing. So over the last month I eased back into re-opening, and took the time to really enjoy getting back to doing what I love. I've been evaluating what worked in my business pre-pandemic and what really didn't, what kinds of things were serving me and my clients and what I was hanging onto because that's what I always did or thought I had to do... ⠀ ⠀ #unpopularopinionalert⠀ ⠀ Just because someone says there's a rule to social media algorithms about posting every day, doesn't mean you have to. Just because someone said that "hustle" looks like an overfilled, non-stop schedule doesn't mean that's the only way to succeed. And just because it's what everyone else is doing, doesn't mean you have to do it too. ⠀ ⠀ One thing I wish I had learned so many moons ago, is that owning a business is not a "one size fits all" kind of jam. You can shape it to look however you want it to. There was so much about pre-pandemic life that I didn't want to go back to, work and otherwise, and I made it my goal, that when "this is all over," I was going to make the changes to make sure I didn't go back to those old ways.⠀ ⠀ So far, so good, and I'm putting it out into the world to hold me accountable to keep it that way 💁♀️⠀ ⠀ 📷 by @emilysotiphotography

Mariah Carey who? 🎁 Call me crazy but I think Take Off Your Pants and Jacket is a Holiday album. I mean, you don’t put a song like “Happy Holidays, You Bastard” if you didn’t want this to be a Christmas classic!! In all honesty though, this album encapsulates angst. And really, what time is more angsts than the holiday season? After watching all my favs on Disney + this week, I was sent into a nostalgia coma and that’s everything early 00s related, aka listening to Blink on 🔂 ⠀⠀ Of all the Blink-182 albums out there, this one is by far my favorite. It’s got the classic Blink sound (you know, with DeLonge’s wonderfully whiney voice that makes you wonder is it “head” or “yead”) but it also reminds me so much of The Cure. And while can’t go wrong with any song on Take Off Your Pants, my personal favorite is the perfectly Friday-I’m-in Love-sounding ‘Story of a Lonely Guy’. I remember listening to ‘First Date’ before an actual first date, and ‘Please Take Me Home’ and ‘Every Time I Look For You’ just remind me of listening to them when I was younger. ⠀⠀ Tell me your favorite Blink song! ⬇️
I think that my dog's facial expression in the second picture sums up some of my reading experience here - I concede that this book and I just weren’t a good fit for each other. I was initially lured by the promise of some Gothic suspense and the comparison with Jane Harper's THE DRY, which is one of my all-time favourite gritty Australian crime novels. I wasn't prepared for romance (ugh)! Why hadn't anyone warned me about that???? . . At some point, my cynical mind coined the story as The Bachelor with some weird Gothic murders thrown in, which no one seemed particularly disturbed or cut up about. I had some major issues with credibility here which I won't go into. Towards the end, I felt that the author was trying too hard to fit in as much weird stuff as possible – there were cases of mistaken identity, a few ritualistic murders, mental illness, a psychopath on a killing spree, witchcraft, things that go bump in the night ... too much, TOO MUCH! . . However, saying that, I can fully appreciate how DEVIL’S LAIR will be a good fit for readers who are a) less picky, and b) love a rural romance set in an atmospheric setting with some crime thrown in. There is a bit of murder and suspense, but in a non-confrontational manner that is more easily digestible for readers who shy away from graphic violence. I really enjoyed the Tassie setting, especially the creepy old house, which the author really brought to life here. . . To sum it all up, I concede that DEVIL’S LAIR and I just weren't a good match - that's life! I suspect that many lovers of gritty Australian crime will struggle with some of the same elements that made my eyes roll back in my head like a Chucky doll, leading to the consumption of several paracetamol to quell the ensuing headache. Well I finally finished ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and can we just say dystopian fiction is definitely not my thing. 😆At least this one was readable, unlike #ThePower by #NaomiAlderton which I could not finish. #unpopularopinionalert I don’t really get the attraction of this book. I love uplifting reads - this is graphic and brutal. I suppose I get the cult appeal - it’s grim and atmospheric which is in a way intriguing. I love the set up .. the costumes, the strangely titled shops and the lingo ( #nolitetebastardescarborundorum ) but I just don’t enjoy reading about man’s inhumanity to (wo)man. I know that’s the whole point in this cautionary tale. I think I dislike reading books like this because they depict this ghastly world which should never happen but sadly things like this do happen (to some extent) - I found it cruel and depressing to read. I’m genuinely interested in why everyone loves this book - is it because it is disturbing and shocking?? I read to relax so books like this aren’t really what I’m after...On the plus side I know now there’s no rush for me to read #TheTestaments ! So. I started this book as the kids were going to bed and stayed up really late finishing it. Clearly, it was a page turner. It was written well. Kya is an amazingly resilient and intelligent character. But. #unpopularopinionalert I don’t think the book rose to the level of hype that is surrounding it. I think a book with unlikable characters and a sad storyline without a sense of humor or quirk is just not a book for me. The best thing I did for my creativity, productivity, energy levels, sleep health, and overall happiness last month was to quit cold turkey (in the middle of the 5th season of a series I was binging, no less!) . And binging it was. Maybe you have a healthier relationship with TV. Maybe you can resist the intentionally-designed-to-be-extra-addictive features like auto playing the next episode before the credits are even done. Maybe you can watch just one episode a night and *wait* a whole 24 hrs (or - unimaginably - 7 days!) to find out what happens next. . I can’t. Maybe someday. But today is not that day. And I LOVE tv. And we are in a golden age of tv, there’s so much good creative smart stuff to watch for sure. But after watching hours of tv because “I need a break”, I just feel more drained. I never feel RE-energized or RE-fueled. . Whereas if I read a book? Same “lost in a fantasy world” enjoyment but somehow refreshing, not draining. Why is that, I wonder? . And if I create something with my hands instead? No contest. Hands down the most replenishing, energizing + relaxing (how can it be both?! it’s magic!!) way to spend my time. . So, here’s to a July of more making, more writing, more storytelling, more playing, more experimenting. . And no more Netflix. . . . . ... Or Hulu. Or Amazon prime video.
