Toy Drive drop off!! 🎁🧸✨ And talk about #homelesshelpandreform !!! @upward_bound_house has an amazing program and is in my opinion an exemplary model of how transitional shelters should be operated in California and across the United States. It was my pleasure to be given a tour throughout the facilities by Laura Anderson the Director of Donor Relations. The center has a pantry full of food that has been donated by wonderful people and organizations. Here, residents of Upward Bound House can come shop for free once a week. There is also an on-site clothing shop where residents can also pick out garments free of charge. Solving homelessness is not an easy task. Giving families a roof over their head is a step in the right direction however, more needs to be done. Resources need to be provided so that people climbing out of being unhoused can prosper and get back on their feet for good. The Upward Bound House team also takes the time to help residents find stable jobs!! We are providing eye exams, prescription glasses (even progressives lense) and reading glasses to help those less fortunate see to be able to work, learn, earn and play. Vision is such a big part of our lives. Our NCL Westside Chapter-Wide Kick-Off meeting was a huge success! The afternoon was held at Temescal Gateway Parkway where our Patronesses + Ticktockers orchestrated a donation drive to collect essential pantry items to help homeless families as they transition into housing with our partner Upward Bound House. Former NCL Ticktocker, Police Sergeant Erica Aklufi, SMPD stopped by our event + talked with our members about communication skills to de-escalate situations + how to talk our way to safety. The Ticktockers broke out into groups where they had the opportunity to pick up a few self-defense moves + physical techniques from Dana Hernandez of Empowered by Dana! ~ food & folk ~ Courtney Guerra Cozy comfort food is an essential part of Holiday cooking but many of the ingredients tend to be heavy making us not feel so cozy after This Butternut squash mac and "cheese" recipe from @courtneyeguerra is not only comforting it is full of flavor and wont have you missing anything It also incorporates veggies from garden to table Visit @courtneyeguerra page for gardening tips & seasonal recipes and to learn about her community urban garden project with @the_ubh_farm Upward Bound House She also has a new show Global Farm on @tastemade second episode tonight Ingredients • 1/4 cup sliced onions or shallots • 2 cups chopped butternut squash • 4 cups stock (veggie or chciken) • 1/2 dry white wine • salt and pepper to taste Method • Slowly sweat onions add dash of salt continue until squash begins to soften • deglaze pan with white wine and reduce • add stock in parts • slowly let it reduce adding remaining stock • once squash is completely soft add to blender and blend until smooth & silky adjust seasoning • fold in squash with pasta Serve with lightly sauteed kale with olive oil , lemon & sea salt Enjoy !

This week, we are keeping with the theme of giving back❤️ My dear friend, @brittanyschmitt and I visited the Alexandria House🏡 to donate bags Brittany made that contain essentials such as shirts👚 leggings, flip flops, sunglasses😎 and tote bags! The bags also contain toiletries such as tooth brush, tooth paste, make up wipes, deodorant wipes, hair ties and chapstick🙌 We always LOVE💕💕 working the with the Alexandria House🏡 and supporting their mission of providing safe and supportive housing for women and children… Their neighborhood center is doing amazing things for the neighborhood and beyond by providing educational📚 and enrichment opportunities for the residents as well as the surrounding neighborhood🙌 Additional bags have also been sent to another charity the Shelton Wilder Group supports, Upward Bound House🏡 whose mission is to eliminate homelessness among families with children in Los Angeles by providing housing🏡 supportive services💪 and advocacy. In partnership with @kidsinneed, I have organized a school supply fundraiser to benefit @upward_bound_house in Los Angeles. Our goal is to raise money to provide 200 school-age children participating in Upward Bound House programs with essential supplies to help ensure their educational success. I sat down with Kristina Ortega, a mom of four and registered nurse, who tells us how #UpwardBoundHouse helped get her from living in a car with her family to a thriving with a career, her own apartment and future for her family.
