A PEARL HARBOR SURVIVOR’s story: Earl “Chuck” Kohler was only 17 years old when he was stationed at Pearl Harbor. He was working on Ford Island on that fateful Sunday morning (December 7th, 1941). He heard, and saw the commotion as the Japanese airplanes began their relentless attack on the un expecting Americans. They dropped bombs on his building, and he had glass blown into the back of his head.. he defied orders from his Commanding officer, as he bled profusely from his wounds and grabbed a .50 caliber machine gun.. He and another Sailor grabbed ammo, and mounted the gun on the wing of a PB4Y Privateer aircraft.. Chuck “gave em’ Hell” as only a farm boy from Minnesota knew.. he put some rounds through the fuselage and cockpit of a Japanese plane that was coming back for another straffing run.. in his words “’d rather Die Fightin’ than Die Hidin”. He is believed to be one of less than 20 Pearl Harbor survivors left in the World, more on his Amazing Story coming soon.. #pearlharbor #wwii #americasgreatestgeneration #usnavy #fordisland #ussarizona #ussnevada #ussmaryland #ussoklahoma #PearlHarborAttack #pearlharborsurvivor #worldwartwo

In late 1941, American forces and naval vessels at the naval base of Pearl Harbor would be struck by suprise from enemy ships and aircraft from the Empire of Japan, officially bringing the United States into World War II. It was during this attack that the lead ship of the Nevada-class of battleships and the last member of the class, USS Oklahoma, would be situated in the harbor at the same time of this attack. As the attack was happening, USS Nevada and Oklahoma would both be struck by a great deal of enemy fire resulting in both ships being sunk to the bottom of the harbor. USS Nevada herself would be salvaged, repaired and reactivated for service in the second World War. USS Oklahoma was sadly not as lucky as her sister, as she was to badly damaged from the attack to be saved. Primarily during and after World War I, the United States and nations alike would have to use their resources and experience to very efficiently and cost effectively to build up their naval fleet. This thought process became more important after the end of World War I, as nations were just trying to rebuild their infrastructure after the damage the war costed them. Many people will notice that the majority of the earliest versions of United States naval battleships were built in groups between two and four ships in total for a class, there was a very good reason for this decision to be made. In order to keep under certain budgets to build new ships, the Navy decided to reduce the amount of battleships completed for a class, which would also reduce the amount of ships that would later become obsolete because of their design. Classes like the Nevada-class were a perfect example of this. • • • • • What other types of American ships would you like to see? Will forever share this story about my great-uncle, Paul Harr, shared by his son, Ken: On December 7, 1941, Paul Harr aboard the USS Nevada at Pearl Harbor was moored at the head of battleship row and the only ship with enough room to manuever and get underway during the Japanese attack. As she headed down the channel, the Nevada sustained damage from several torpedo and bombs, and the decision was made to beach the ship. As the tide came in, the boat floated free and the ship was moved to Waipio Point next to a sugarcane field. A third wave of attacks was rumored to be on the way, so a gangplank was fashioned to the field below and the sailors hid in the sugarcane and issued WWI carbines and ammunition. Dad wondered if these old rifles still worked, and seeing a bird flying overhead decided to take a shot at it. After hearing the rifle shot, everyone started shooting and Dad said he hit the deck and covered up till a cease fire was called. Only shot he fired during the war. #family #ussnevada #pearlharbor #rememberpearlharbor

82 years ago on December 7th, 1941, the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy. The USS Nevada (BB-36), laid down in 1912 by the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, and commissioned in 1916 at the Boston Navy Yard. She served in both World Wars and was the only battleship present at both the attack on Pearl Harbor and the invasion of Normandy. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, Nevada was grounded after sustaining severe damage while attempting to escape the harbor. After several months of repairs she returned to action in 1943 before she was decommissioned in 1946. USS Nevada earned seven battle stars for her service and even survived a nuclear test. *** Image: Photograph of the battleship USS Nevada when she was based at the Boston Navy Yard during World War II, 1943. At the end of every naval vessels career, there are only a few different places these ships can end up, whether it be the scrappers, being turned into a museum, or in many circumstances, used for the testing of new weapons. In July of 1946, USS Nevada would be used for the Bikini Atoll Nuclear Test. She would serve throughout both World Wars and be a significant part of the United States during the Second World War for the protection of allied forces. In todays feature, she had been painted orange for nuclear testing. • • • • • What other types of American ships would you like to see? In order for the Japanese navy to inflict substantial damage to the ships that were stationed out of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, they would need to use torpedoes to cause irreversible damage to the hull of ships. The one problem that came into play was how they were going to be able to launch torpedoes into the harbor, without the torpedoes themselves hitting the shallow bottom. Designers would fix this issue with the help of wooden fins on the back of the torpedoes to make them stop closer to the surface, rather than diving deeper. With these new torpedoes and the use of aerial bombs, the Japanese navy would now be able to launch their strategic attack. These were just some of the weapons used on December 7th, 1941 to sink ships like USS Nevada. Built as part of a new line of battleships, USS Nevada would be the first of two total ships that was completed for the Nevada-class of standard battleships. March of 1916 would mark the start of Nevada's service to the United States. She would primarily operate in the western Atlantic and the Caribbean until mid-1918. Following her work in the first World War, she would be modified from 1927 to 1930 that included a new super structure and new anti-aircraft armaments. On the Morning of December 7th, 1941, she would be the only ship to get underway during the air attacks from Japan, but would have to be grounded due to damages sustained from the attack. She would eventually be rebuilt and fixed in time to see service in the second World War. With the surrender of Japan in 1945, she would become a target ship in 1946 for atomic bombs. • • • • • What other types of American ships would you like to see? We‘ve all heard of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, but who has heard about the USS Nevada and the Seven Patten Brothers? The Patten brothers, Clarence, Jr. (“Bick”), Myrne (“Ted”), Ray, Marvin, Allen, Gilbert, and Bruce all born in Lake City, Iowa, had all joined the Navy by 1940. At the time, it was the Navy’s policy to bring together brothers in service when at all possible, so by January 1941, the brothers were stationed together in the USS Nevada’s engine room. In September 1941, the seven Patten brothers were joined by their father, Clarence, who enlisted aboard the USS Nevada with his sons as witnesses. On the morning of 7 Dec 1941, Gilbert was waiting to buy toiletries from the ship’s store. Tiring of the line, he decided to come back later. Marvin was in a skiff going ashore for duty and Allen was eating breakfast. Roy, Myrne, and Bruce were below deck. During the attack, a bomb exploded where Gilbert had just been standing at the ship’s store, killing all those in line. A bomb struck near Marvin’s boat that was leaving for the shore. Alerted by a young cook that they were in fact being attacked, Allen and the rest of the crew belowdecks flew into action and helped the Nevada to be the first ship to open fire at enemy planes. All seven Patten brothers and their father survived the attack. In June 1942 the eighth Patten brother, Wayne, joined the Navy and the family continued to serve during WWII. They served aboard ships that were involved in the Battle of the Coral Sea, Battle of Leyte Gulf, and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. In 1942, the Patten brothers were completely separated for the remainder of the war, due to another set of brothers. The cruiser USS Juneau was torpedoed and all five Sullivan brothers were killed, because of this, the Navy changed its policy and no longer allowed brothers to be assigned to the same ship. The eight brothers’ and their father’s careers totaled 124 years of service to their country. When you’re 400 feet under the water in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in a submarine with 24 Trident C-4 missiles pointed at the Soviet Union, you need to find ways to have fun. Seeing how it was so popular last time, we thought we’d give you some more shots of USS Nevada painted orange. USS Nevada was painted orange for the atomic bomb tests called ‘Operation Crossroads’ in 1946. During the ‘Able’ detonation, a B-29 bomber dropped an atomic bomb on a fleet of ships to find out what it would do to naval vessels. The USS Nevada was the target ship for the test, so she was painted bright orange to be easily identifiable for the pilots. #navy #naval #ussnevada #battleship #submarine #aircraftcarrier #cruiser #destroyer #dday #omahabeach #utahbeach #ww2 #pacific #sherman #tigertank #tanks #ships #oppenheimer #usn #usnavy #royalnavy #wreck #shipwreck

At the time of their completion, the Nevada-class of battleships were among some of the United States most heavily armored ships with parts of them being as thick as 13.5 inches. Both USS Nevada and Oklahoma would serve in similar areas of operations during their careers including serving during the first World War where they would both be used in the Atlantic to protect convoys. It was between the first and second World War that both ships of this class would be modernized with an increase in anti-aircraft armaments, thicker armor protection and an altered appearance. Both ships would be sunk in December of 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Nevada would get repaired and get to see service into the second World War. On the other hand, Oklahoma would be to badly damaged to be saved after being hit with aerial torpedoes and would later sink while under tow in 1947. In commemoration of the Crossroads Baker test on July 25th, 1946, he's some info about USS Nevada (BB-36). Called "the greatest [battleship] afloat" by the New York Times, she served in both WW1 and WW2. Revolutionary design made her a huge leap forward technologically. During the battle of Pearl Harbor, she was the only battleship to get her engines running and get underway. Hit by a torpedo and as much as 10 bombs, her crew managed to ground her preventing a complete sinking and loss during the battle, earning the recognition of being "the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal and depressing morning". Quickly repaired and refitted, she supported landings at Attu, Normandy, Southern France, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Her guns were even replaced with barrels from USS Arizona, letting her get vengeance for her loss at Pearl Harbor. At Okinawa, she was hit by a Kamikaze sustaining even more damage that sunk more fragile ships. After the war, she was used as a target during the two bomb test series Operation Crossroads. Miraculously, she survived 2 atomic weapons attacks. Then, towed back to Hawaii, USS Nevada was used as a gunnery target by Iowa's 16in guns. Still surviving, she was torpedoed, and finally the toughest ship in US history sank beneath the waves. #UssNevada #Navy #pearlharbor #operationoverlord #crossroads

Even as world wars go, the U.S.S. Nevada was a resilient ship: It was the only battleship to get underway during the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, surviving bombs and torpedoes before the burning vessel was beached and later repaired. It trained its guns on German positions at Normandy on D-Day, and went on to support the invasions of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. At the end of the war, U.S.S. Nevada was selected as the central target for the first nuclear test at Bikini Atoll, where it survived a 23-kiloton aerial detonation (the bomb missed), as well as a second underwater detonation. Finally, on July 31, 1948, following a four-day naval gunfire exercise, the toughest ship of the Second World War was deliberately sunk in the Pacific by the U.S. Navy. - USN - NH&HC - National Geographic - Kristin Romey ⚓ Donations accepted. Operation Dragoon: German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel was right: “We must contain them on the beaches if we are to win this war!” He had realized that the Allies would have complete air supremacy over Normandy. We had air supremacy for the invasion of southern France in August 1944, during Operation Dragoon. We also had command of the Mediterranean Sea and the landings of Allied troops on the shores of the Riviera went much more smoothly than the landings in Normandy. The Nevada dueled with German 13.4-inch gun batteries defending the port of Toulon. These guns had been removed from French ships scuttled earlier in the war and emplaced in reinforced concrete bunkers. The efforts of the Nevada—which fired over 5,000 shells—and other ships made it possible for the troops of the French II Corps to seize Toulon. - USN - NH&HC - Charles T. Celebrating 4th of July - Pearl Harbor, Hickam & Ford Island!!! We've done this route many times over the years to mark Independence Day & to honor our history!!! Usually, We've had a service member give the talk as we stopped at the many historic sites along the way. This time it was my turn to do the talk, so I spent Sunday afternoon putting together my notes on 3x5 index cards. Man, there were a lot of sites including: the Ford Island Bridge, USS Utah, NOAA's IRC, the Seaplane Hangers, Pacific Aviation Museum's Ford Island Control Tower, USS Missouri, USS Oklahoma, USS Arizona, Pearl Harbor Shipyard, Hickam Field, PACAF HQ Bldg 1102, and Hickam Beach!!! Wow, what a great way to celebrate our history!!! Huge MAHALO to our DOD sponsors for getting us on base and keeping us coloring-within-the-lines!!! #thankyouforyourservice #4thofjuly #jointbasepearlharborhickam #tradewindcyclingteam #neverforgotten #pearlharbor #fordisland #hickam #ussnevada #ussutah #ussoklahoma #ussarizona #ussmissouri #fordislandbridge #pacafhq #hickambldg1102 #hickambeach #hickamafb #pearlharbornavalshipyard #phnsy @allisbliss @pamelaco.22 @ilgelatohawaii @bme.racing.hawaii @litoray @kfunasaki @tct_bob @js12hvfn @happyc92 @lmccarney @sharonkeith2 @malasalas @meredithmillswell @corypix @kylekolomona @chisholmcecile #luckywelivehawaii #shaka #noaairc #danielkinouyeregionalcenter #noaafordisland #pbycatalina #fordislandcontroltower #pacificaviationmuseum #rememberourheros🇺🇸 #admiralclareybridge

Battleship USS Nevada (BB-36) painted orange as a target ship for the Operation Crossroads Able Nuclear weapons test in 1946. After the war, Nevada was selected as a target ship for the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. To identify her as the target for the airburst shot Able, she was painted orange. Nevada survived the test and was determined to still be in an operable, if radioactive, condition. The second test, shot Baker, an underwater detonation, also failed to sink Nevada. One airborne observer reported the explosion actually lifted the ship clear of the water on an even keel. And although now dangerously radioactive, she was still considered to be only minimally damaged and still operational. Nevada was stored at Kwajalein until 1948 when she was towed near Oahu to be sunk as a target. On July 26, 1948, a powerful new explosive device was tested aboard Nevada, only to detonate without causing significant damage. On July 31, Nevada was to be sunk by naval gunfire from the modern battleship USS Iowa (16-inch guns) and three light cruisers (6-inch guns). First from 15 miles out, then just five, Nevada was pounded by gunfire, but refused to sink. Destroyers were sent into fire hundreds of 5-inch projectiles into Nevada, but when the smoke cleared, Nevada was riding proud and defiant. Finally, the decision was made to torpedo the ship and an Avenger torpedo bomber put a single torpedo into starboard side of Nevada amidships. Slowly at first, Nevada started listing starboard, then abruptly capsized and went down, stern first, in 2,600 fathoms of water 165 miles southwest of Pearl Harbor with her colors still flying. The toughness of Nevada was a vindication of, and a tribute to, the men who designed and built this fine ship. As the ship disappeared into the Pacific, a former crewman was heard to remark: “Certainly every man who ever served aboard her will be forever proud to say: “I served on the greatest of the great battleships, the USS Nevada, and a part of her mystique will always remain with me.” A fitting epitaph for Battleship Nevada. USS Nevda (BB-36) painted orange to serve as the main target of the Able nuclear test. In spite of the fact that this ship was the target the bomb was scheduled to explode in, the bomb fell about 1.000yds away from the ship, causing nearly no damage to Nevada. After this test she received another nuclear blast during Bake nuclear test. This time the bomb exploded about 90ft below the waterline. During these 2 tests conducted during the Operation Crossroads in 1946 multiple ships, including the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3), commissioned in the mid-1920s were sunk. It took more than 7 hours for Saratoga to sink after Bake nuclear test. Some war prizes were also included during the test, the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen from the German kriegsmarine and the Japanese IJN Nagato. #wwii #ww2 #ww1 #wwi #usn #usnavy #ijn #japanesenavy #kms #kriegsmarine #navy #nuclear #test #nucleartest #bomb #nuke #able #bake #battleship #bb #ussnevada #bb36 #36 #aircraftcarrier #cv #usssaratoga #cv3 #3 #prinzeugen #nagato
