Yes, they even had cameras way back then! 🤣 After a long sail there (and back again), I am happily looking forward to food (without the hefty price tag), a good wash (and no queue or feral children at the toilets), and my bed most importantly (complete with no generator sound all night!) Just finished Light Bringer and I can honestly say the Red Rising Series is the best series I have read in my life. I have yet to be as captivated, obsessed, enthralled (insert every adjective to describe: ‘In Love With’) by a set of characters, plot/plot twists, world building, you name it - as I have been with these books. It was devastatingly beautiful. It was an emotional process that has quite literally left me feeling like I need to tell everyone I know to read these books. Pierce Brown has created a masterpiece. I laughed, I cried (a lot), I felt like screaming, and I just couldn’t get enough. Dark Age by Pierce Brown (2019) After very much enjoying the Red Rising trilogy last year, I have started this year by working my way through the sequel series. Iron Gold is the first, set 10 years after the original trilogy, and introducing 3 new POV characters to sit alongside Darrow, the sole POV character of the original Red Rising saga. This proves for an interesting shift in storytelling, as we begin to see many of our heroes from the first three books from some more diverse and opposing perspectives, which really helps to further build the world these tales take place in. Dark Age is the second book of the sequel series, and it truly lives up to that title! At approximately 210,000 words, this is truly a beast, and the first 150 pages or so of very small print almost exclusively focuses on Darrow's front-line experiences of his war on Mercury. Lots of bloodshed, gore, and muck, you really feel the weight of this war coming off the page, and honestly, it was a struggle to get through this beginning portion of the book due to the sheer brutality and hopelessness of the situation. Thankfully, once we begin to shift focus a little onto the other parts of the story, the pace really begins to pick up and I found myself much more invested and excited to read on to find out where we were heading. The dour feeling and dark themes do continue into the rest of the book though, with some truly shocking moments, and this read will definitely test the mettle of its reader and torture your feelings for these characters. I have to say, though, it is absolutely worth persevering with, and experiencing the full impact of this book is something that will stick with me for a long time. 2.5/5⭐️ Dark Age by Pierce Brown 🌶️ - not spicy, but mature content in dialogue, violence, references to SA Well, I am finding myself once again disappointed. This instalment focuses so heavily on violence and battle that it took away from the rest of the plot. I’m pretty sure the book could have been half the length. I was also listening to the audiobook and it was hard sometimes to remember who was fighting who and where. I know the book is literally called Dark Age, but did it have to be THAT dark? Lyria had some amazing character development given she had so little page time. I still love her and Volga, I’m so glad they found each other and are buddies now. Sevro had very little page time which was disappointing. I also appreciated that Victra and Mustang got their spunk back in this book compared to the last. Darrow is still a wild card for me right now. I’m really hoping the next book will bring light as the title suggests! #bookstagram #bookreview #redrising #darkage #piercebrown
