After a staggeringly long day, I present a staggeringly beautiful sunset. On Tuesday, February 19th at 5:52pm (per a very helpful geotag – in my opinion, one of the most crucial tech innovations for an exhaustively persnickety spinner of yarns like myself), John and I decided to walk to World Showcase after riding the always enjoyable Test Track (and collaborating to design the most preposterous car imaginable in the ride queue, as is our custom). We had the path to ourselves as we made our way from Future World East to France to obtain what must’ve been our 10th Brie fondue served in a trés petite bread bowl. As we reached the Odyssey restaurant on our very own fromage odyssey, we stopped in our tracks to take in the spectacular gradient of sunset colors before us, and were able to catch the last bits of sun as it peeked behind the puffy clouds and timeless silhouettes of a few Epcot pavilions one last time before it dipped beneath the horizon for the evening. We gazed at the monorail beam sweeping dramatically above the water, gracefully intersecting with the elevated path below, and at its reflection on the surface of the placid lake underneath, the smallest uniform ripples on the water adding texture and movement to this otherwise tranquil tableau. While I’ve briefly touched upon how much we love Expedition Everest, I haven’t yet penned an Official Expedition Everest Appreciation Post™. Hold onto your crampons (just a bit of hiking humor), here it comes. John and I are roller coaster people. We love to ride them, we love to read about them, and we’ve amassed a significant amount of knowledge about manufacturers, statistics, and other engineering data that would bore much of the general population to tears. We’ve been lucky enough to ride some of the tallest, fastest, most thrilling coasters in the US, but Expedition Everest (with a relatively modest top speed of 50 mph) leaves most in the dust. The theming, as is to be expected, is top notch. The queue leads you through multicolored prayer flags and Tibetan bells into the office of a Himalayan travel agency, set in the fictional village of Serka Zong. Replete with artifacts from previous treks, the queue is an attraction in itself. It’s hard to conceive of the exhaustive research behind the myriad exhibits, each prop a letter-perfect addition to the masterfully realized story. The coaster trains, with their detailed vintage steam train motif, are so convincing, you don’t feel like you’re boarding a roller coaster – the experience is truly akin to embarking on a train journey. The ambient audio, set pieces, massive Yeti animatronic (who we believe with all our hearts will swipe at us murderously again someday) and staggeringly formidable mountain come together to create an experience that redefines just what a roller coaster can achieve. For proof of the special place this ride holds in our hearts, if you swipe, you can see the picture John’s had as his phone background for exactly 2 years, 10 months, and 26 days. As I’m posting around the brunch hour on Sunday, I figured that I would feature an edible trademark of the Disney Parks almost as legendary as the parks themselves – the classic Mickey Waffle. What can I say about the Mickey Waffle that hasn’t already been said? Not much – it’s common knowledge that the combination of Golden Malted waffle mix, signature Disney Mickey head waffle iron, and a pinch of Disney Magic makes for an experience you can’t find anywhere else. To state it plainly: It’s comfort food in a comfort place. If you’re harboring a bit of disbelief that you’re finally AT Disney World (something we always contend with on the first days of our vacations), all doubt flies out the window once you slather those tiny, crispy, golden Mickey heads in butter, douse them with breakfast syrup (a Canadian/Vermont maple syrup loyalist, even I will admit that there’s something extremely sentimental about the faux syrup in this application), cut into an ear, and take that perfect first bite. Served on a classic Walt Disney World paper plate (another trademark of the resort that never fails to induce WAVES of nostalgia) with a choice of breakfast meat or fruit (as healthy as we attempt to keep our breakfasts in order to maintain our energy for a day of pounding the park pavement, the Disney bacon is where it’s at), this simple breakfast is one of the first must-dos on every trip. Last night, John and I rang in 2022 in true mid-30s homebody style. As the clock struck 12, John was finishing a drawing, and I was planting peach trees (in Animal Crossing, that is). We toasted with a stiff peppermint herbal tea, and swiftly resumed our respective pursuits. Gumby slept through the entire night (and all the fireworks, thankfully), but don’t worry, we made sure to warmly wish him a happy new year the moment he woke up this morning. Given the recent literal and metaphorical last sunset of 2021, I thought it fitting to feature an actual sunset today. Apologies if that’s not a groundbreakingly creative concept, I was channeling my inner arboriculturalist into the wee hours of the morning, you see, and am admittedly not operating at 100 percent as I write this. This photo was taken at about six in the evening on February 18th, 2019, as John and I headed back to our room at Pop Century after a full-throttle day of park hopping, just so we could glam ourselves up before our first Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue dinner theater experience. We stopped in our tracks when we rounded the corner and saw this transcendent sunset come into view, showcased beautifully by the dormant winter trees, tranquil water, and dappled clouds so evocative, they could’ve come from the hand of Bob Ross himself. Admittedly, we didn’t get to stop and see too many sunsets on our honeymoon, given our “go-go-go/rope drop to park close/sleep is for suckers” pace, departing our resort at 6:30am at the latest and returning at 11pm at the earliest. We were able to get most of the EXTREME THEME PARK-ING out of our systems on our honeymoon (believe me, there’s a time and place for it…just not Every. Single. Top 3 reasons to catch rope drop at WDW: 1. Taking in an inimitable Florida sunrise on the bus ride to the park. 2. Being first in line for coffee en route to said bus. 3. Views like these. On Animal Kingdom days on our honeymoon in February 2019, as much as we loved Pandora and made countless trips there, we always headed to Asia first. Asia was far less busy first thing in the morning, and in our opinion, was a more civilized way to ease into the day (particularly before we’d had our second cup of coffee). Each morning, without having to fight our way through dense Pandora crowds, we always ended up right at the rope in front of the path to Expedition Everest (one of our top 3 rides of all time, no question). This view alone, a visual representation of the fun that lay ahead of us (and a reminder that behind that rope was a rare walk through an empty park), was worth every 5:00 AM alarm. On one of our last days there, we met the kindest Cast Member (Elise) manning the rope, and spoke with her for the better part of an hour. She raved to us about working for WDW (we’re all ears, so to speak, when someone wants to tell us about working for the Mouse), and about what it was like working in Animal Kingdom on Everest specifically. We chatted until she had to head to the ride to start it up for the day. After Everest opened, we strolled up to the attraction and hopped in the very short queue. We were flabbergasted (and BEYOND touched) when she found us in line and handed us these paper Fastpasses. We knew we couldn’t use them - we HAD to take them home to remind us of such an unforgettable morning. In this instance, our magical moment was so much more than the thoughtful gift Elise so kindly bestowed upon us.
