Took a side trip to a nearby slot canyon at Willis Creek near Bryce Canyon National Park. 4WD or AWD with high clearance recommended to get to this area. Luckily, there were no signs of rain or a thunderstorm that day, so there was a low risk for flash floods in the slot canyon. Aujourd’hui nous irons nous balader dans le Willis Creek slot canyon. La météo est orageuse et le ciel bien noir. Il est déconseillé de se promener dans les slots canyon en période d’orage. Une crue soudaine meurtrière peut surgir en quelques secondes même s’il ne pleut pas sur nous. C’est donc avec un peu de crainte que nous décidons de nous y engager. La veille (en juillet 2017) il y eu 9 morts en Arizona dans une rivière où nous nous étions arrêtés il y quelques années. This was our first time in the Willis Creek Narrows Slot Canyon (1st time in a slot canyon this narrow. Narrow = fun). Wear shoes that can get wet!!!! We hiked 3.2 miles total (it’s 4 miles total round trip), and we found a shaded flat rock to eat a light lunch (pack out all your trash). You are constantly jumping from left to right over water, so, even though the trail is easy, without much climbing at all, you have to pay attention and decide where to cross the water. I have short legs, my path was through it a lot 😌. Lots of shade and sun going through. We’ve never hiked anything like this and we give three thumbs up. Also, what does pic #3 look like to you???? Very dog friendly, our dog is not a super fan of water so I can just imagine us carrying him at some point). Now these are our kind of slots! We checked out the Willis Creek Narrows and got to experience our first slot canyons! We’re total and unashamed mountain lovers, but these slot canyons and desert formations are spectacular! It’s amazing to see what the force of Mother Nature is capable of! This area is a great option if you’re looking for some cool slot canyons without the crowds of more common places like Antelope Canyon or The Narrows. The trail is easily accessible with minimal elevation gain/loss, but you are crossing the creek in multiple areas (during our visit the water was only a couple inches deep and extremely manageable)! The area is located down a dirt road within the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument- the road was relatively well maintained with several Subaru and crossover SUVs parked at the trailhead. Please be aware of the weather as rainfall can quickly cause a dangerous situation if you’re in the slot canyons!

Looking for adventure off the beaten path is always a highlight when we travel, so spending a half day driving and exploring the backcountry below Bryce Canyon was a no brainer. Thankfully, our friend drives a pickup and has lots of experience driving trails, err very rough roads, so we made it back without incident. It was wonderful to look back across the valley to the edge of Bryce Canyon, and see part of the Grand Staircase-Escalante formation that stretches 241 km and includes Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyons. In fact, the bottom layer of rock at Bryce Canyon is the top layer at Zion, and the bottom layer at Zion is the top layer at the Grand Canyon. They are all part of the Colorado Plateau, a layer cake of sedimentary rock that has been uplifted by tectonic forces over the last 70 million years to elevations reaching up to 3,960 m. As it rose, faults fractured and offset the layers along its edges creating some of the marvels we see today. Our first destination, Grosvenor Arch(photo 3) is a rare and beautiful double arch carved by wind and water high atop a majestic cliff. Well worth the drive out to the middle of nowhere! Our next destination was the Willis Creek Slot Canyon Trail which proved more elusive to find when information entered into Google maps wasn’t specific enough…all part of the adventure and we found another cool spot with hoodoos! Again, well worth the drive to Willis Slot Canyon to hike the riverbed winding through narrow sandstone canyon walls carved by the sometimes raging river. Because the walls here are a harder composition of both Page and Navajo sandstone, and the sand grains are cemented with minerals such as calcite, silica or even iron, a slot canyon is formed rather than a wider riverbed. #coloradoplateau #grandstaircaseescalante #brycecanyon #grosvenorarch #williscreekslotcanyon #utah #landscapephotography #landscape

"I survived it, but I don't know how. And it still hurts like hell sometimes." This is your sign to do the thing. Whatever it is. For me, it was leaving. And the past 8 or so months have not been easy. Not for a second. But I did what I had to for me, and people will tell me I was brave or strong, but the truth is - I was neither. I was terrified and I had panic attacks nearly daily because I didn't know how to do it on my own. I'm so thankful I had my girls every step of the way, @nhaspeck @grebnietsadnama - I wouldn't be where I am without you ladies. But at some point, I realized I could rely on myself too. On the woman I was becoming. I could trust her again and she wouldn't fail me like she had so many times. I've grown. I've learned hard lessons. I've changed. I'm nowhere near perfect, and my journey isn't over yet, but I've come this far. This trip to Utah is the scariest thing I've done yet. Is it worth it? YES. But I fought, HARD to make this happen. And I questioned if I could so many times, or if I even should. Walking through this canyon today took my breath away... And made me reflect on just how far I've come. I'm not the girl I was, and never will be again. So this is your sign. Do it scared. Do it crying. Do it stressed out. Do it in the middle of a panic attack. Do it when you don't want to. Do it even though you don't know what comes next. Do the things that put you where you want to be. Where you need to be. The healing journey is not easy, nor kind... But it's worth it. We found a beautiful slot canyon located close by in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument called Willis Creek! We were intrigued by the colors and patterns on the narrow walls, the small waterfalls, hopping the creek back and forth and even the swimming lizards (Sagebrush Lizard) - what a cool little find!!

Day 43 (31/05/2023) - Somewhere on hwy 12 - Hiked Willis Creek Trail today (10km). Only blue sky in the forecast but as I was about to walk back in the canyon, dark clouds were looming over me. More were surrounding the parking lot. I’ll spend the night in Kodachrome SP campground (i don’t want to be on any back road when it’s pouring).
