I don’t think we even mean to wander sometimes. My kids know full well that when we stop at a store, despite my time crunch and strict shopping list, I still might get pulled into the orbit of some cute little item, forgetting for a moment about my intended purchase. It’s like my homing beacon gets jumbled and attached to a new destination. What about my journey to Jesus? Am I steady in my course to return to Him? Or do I get distracted by side quests? I find a lot of comfort in a couplet found in the hymn Come Thou Fount: Let Thy goodness like a fetter Bind my wandering heart to Thee It is because of the goodness of the Lord, his mercy and grace, that we can become bound, attached, secured, sealed to him. I want to go where he goes. As we go together, I know he will lift me up to higher places than I ever could have reached on my own. God’s idea of strength and man’s idea of strength are opposite one another. The Lord told Paul, “My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Having learned this lesson, Paul could then say, “When I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). It is true that God’s strength is made perfect in weakness. Otherwise, it would not be God’s strength, nor would He get the glory. That is why throughout the Old Testament God ordered the leaders of Israel to reduce the size of their armies, or He announced in advance the time and place of conflict and which side was going to win. God wanted the faith of man to be placed in Him and not in human armaments or physical strength. In our own lives, God wants us to be broken in spirit so that He can make us strong at the broken places. Man likes to place his security in missiles and armies, but the world now has more nuclear weapons and more men under arms than ever before in history. Have all of these weapons, all of these armies brought more security to humanity? On the contrary, they have brought less security because man will still not trust in God. Isaiah said, “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (40:31). This is the kind of strength God is prepared to give us if we will only ask Him for it. Do you have this strength? You can have it. Just ask! Wings Of Eagles (2016) ⭐️⭐️ IN SHORT: Eric Liddell, gold medal winner at the 1924 Paris Olympics, returns to China where he was born, eventually finding himself in a prisoner of war camp during World War II. The story of athlete Eric Liddell is well known from the 1981 movie Chariots Of Fire. Wings Of Eagles takes up the story from there as Liddell returns to China where he spent his earliest years. At first it is a story of him helping those needing healthcare, education and food. As World War II starts and China is invaded by Japan he finds himself placed in a prisoner of war camp where resources are getting more and more scarce and life hangs by a thread. ~ It is good that someone has decided to tell the story of the rest of the life of Eric Liddell as it is a tale of courage, compassion, faith and dedication. These values are infused throughout the movie. However, and regrettably, the telling of the story lacks vibrancy and seems to drift along rather than having any momentum especially in the period when war has broken out. God gives us our purpose and plan but no timelines. Maybe to provide us an opportunity to lean into Him and draw our strength in our faith as we wait on Him. Remember the Israelites, they grew weary, their spirits were darkened as they allowed despair to settle in their souls. We may grow weary but our source is our Lord, that is why we must draw close in the waiting. Surrendering our full trust and confidence in God is important because we learn lessons, obedience and patience. Take a look at what we can expect in Isaiah 40:31 “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Alternatively, when we take matters into our own hands we cause undo stressors, reflect on Sarah and Abraham. They decided to help God but God’s plan cannot be altered, rather we witness the unnecessary stress/results of their actions. In the waiting After studying for a few years, I started working for a GPS mapping company where I taught, mostly elderly travellers, how to upload the maps to their computer and GPS. It taught me a lot of patience. I mean a whole lot. The kind of patience where you have to teach the customer where the start button on their computer is - kind of patience. And so naturally I thought I had patience. Until I had kids. That taught me a whole new level of patience. And all the parents agreed. Throughout the years I’ve prayed and waited on things. Some have come to fruition and some, well, let’s just say, God gave us free will, and what a beautiful thing that is. As I find myself in yet another waiting season I feel my patience getting tested and tried like never before. I have wrestled with God at 2am, cried, pleaded, surrendered and repeated it all over. Waiting is hard. Patience really is a virtue. Although I feel that my season of waiting is coming to an end, I have found comfort in this scripture. ‘But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.’ - Isaiah 40:31 He is certainly renewing my strength daily, even hourly. Maybe you’re waiting for something big. Maybe it’s a spouse, or a baby. Maybe you’re waiting to purchase the right house. Maybe even a job. Maybe you’re waiting on salvation for a family member. Waiting is hard, but take comfort in the knowing that He will renew your strength. Therefor do not grow weary in the time of waiting. Surrender your dreams and hopes to Him. 📷 This sunflower took weeks, actually more like months, to grow and finally bloom, but the reward of waiting was oh so sweet. I even had neighbours comment that the sunflowers on the corner brighten their day. Waiting is so worth it.
