Bopp. On 20FEB43 while on a photo reconnaissance mission near Zarzis, Tunisia the aircraft was damaged by ground fire. Lt. Wernicke made a successful wheels-up landing and evaded capture. The aircraft survived her landing in good condition and was deemed to be repairable. Mechanics of the USAAF 79th Fighter Group soon had her up on her landing gear and replaced the propeller. Markings have already begun to evolve. In the picture it can be seen how the aircraft bears the fuselage codes and squadron insignia of the 87th Fighter Squadron / 79th Fighter Group. Their 75mm short-barreled guns were excellent infantry support weapons, and their speed and reliability rendered effective assistance to the high-maintenance Tigers. By Christmas Day 1942 12 Tiger Is and 16 Panzer IIIs were in Tunisia, and after the occupation of Southern France and the rest of schwere Panzer-Abteilung 501 arrived, the twenty Tiger Is were slowly whittled down by offensive operations. By March 10, 1943 only six of the heavy tanks and twelve of the mediums are operational. Operation Market Garden was an Allied military operation during the Second World War fought in the German-occupied Netherlands from 17 to 27 September 1944. Its objective was to create a 64 mi (103 km) salient into German territory with a bridgehead over the Nederrijn (Lower Rhine River), creating an Allied invasion route into northern Germany. This was to be achieved by two sub-operations: seizing nine bridges with combined US and British airborne forces (Market) followed by British land forces swiftly following over the bridges (Garden). AK Cap. Here is my repro AK cap, professionally made to the exact specifications of the originals worn by Paratroopers during the post war years right up to the present day,but worn in much fewer numbers now. An original AK cap is very hard to come by nowadays, they were a private purchase item in the 1960s & 70s, I think they were sold somewhere in Aldershot. My one here is sporting a 2 PARA DZ flash, it was the norm to add Bn DZ flashes & sometimes company recognition flashes also, in the photographs you can see a lightning bolt on some caps which identifies the wearer as a member of Support Company. They are named AK caps after the German Africa Korps of WW2, British Paratroopers would take them from dead or captured Africa Korps soldiers to protect themselves from the North African sun. They were widely worn in the Aden campaign and pretty much anywhere in the world where the sun dictated the need for them. Over time the jungle hat became the favoured headdress to protect individuals from the sun, there are still a few members of the Parachute Regiment trying hard to re introduce this piece of historical headdress though. A pesar de la edad, conforme vamos desmontando, nos vamos dando cuenta que este modelo se hizo para lo que se hizo.
