In a world where technology moves faster than humans can keep up, rest has often been completely ignored, or even villainized. “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” is a common and yet dangerous saying. After quarantines and panic, illness and grieving, many people in our world who didn’t prioritize the importance of rest, quality time, and mental wellness are now starting to understand and demand these things. The importance of rest is underrated, especially by those of us who burn extra energy just trying to function in a world not built for us. It can be detrimental. We require rest, but we require extra rest, and in unique ways to our minds and bodies. While we would prefer an ideal setting and amount of time for rest, sometimes we have to create it in pockets of the day, in less than ideal conditions. Sometimes rest looks like creativity. Sometimes rest looks like crying in a bathroom stall. Sometimes rest looks like binging media. How many times has the absolute need for rest been judged and called “laziness” by others? Oh, if they only knew how empty the battery was in that moment… What does “rest” mean to you? What does it look like? What does it feel like? What do you want it to be? The topic is open to however you want to interpret and express it. We all need rest to restore ourselves. Without rest, just like food, air, or water, we cannot survive, let alone thrive. It's that you're destroying the peg." —Paul Collins Autism is still underappreciated and misunderstood in our society. We are different, not any less. This quote hit me like a ton of bricks. Almost all of us in the Autism community have felt that destruction, whether early diagnosed, late diagnosed, misdiagnosed, or late self-diagnosed. Cultivating a creative community for ourselves is a massive part of Aurtistic Zine's mission. That mission is also why the theme for the upcoming zine is "Rest." Submission call for Artists and Writers! Theme for this upcoming issue is "Rest." In these last 3 years, rest has come to the forefront more than ever in this fast paced, consumerist society. In a world where technology moves faster than humans can keep up, rest has often been completely ignored, or even villainized. “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” is a common and yet dangerous saying. After quarantines and panic, illness and grieving, many people in our world who didn’t prioritize the importance of rest, quality time, and mental wellness are now starting to understand and demand these things. The importance of rest is underrated, especially by those of us who burn extra energy just trying to function in a world not built for us. It can be detrimental. We require rest, but we require extra rest, and in unique ways to our minds and bodies. While we would prefer an ideal setting and amount of time for rest, sometimes we have to create it in pockets of the day, in less than ideal conditions. Sometimes rest looks like creativity. Sometimes rest looks like crying in a bathroom stall. Sometimes rest looks like binging media. How many times has the absolute need for rest been judged and called “laziness” by others? Oh, if they only knew how empty the battery was in that moment… What does “rest” mean to you? What does it look like? What does it feel like? What do you want it to be? The topic is open to however you want to interpret and express it. We all need rest to restore ourselves. Without rest, just like food, air, or water, we cannot survive, let alone thrive.
