Home Release Review: “Mean Girls” from EoM Contributor Mallory Moore. The original Mean Girls starring Lindsay Lohan (“Freaky Friday”), Rachel McAdams (“Game Night”), Amanda Seyfried (“Jennifer’s Body”), and Lacey Chabert (“Not Another Teen Movie”), was released almost exactly 20 years ago on April 30, 2004. Inspired by “Queen Bees and Wannabes,” a self-help book by Rosalind Wiseman, the film was written by SNL star and comedy queen Tina Fey (who also appeared in the movie as a high school calculus teacher named Ms. Norbury). In January of this year, “Mean Girls” found itself on the big screen once again, this time as a movie adaptation of the musical. After its digital and streaming release in early February, “Mean Girls” is now getting a 4K UHD release from Paramount — just in time for the 4K edition of the 2004 version. The “Mean Girls” 2024 disc includes over 30 minutes of bonus content, including three featurettes, an extended scene, a gag reel, a music video, and a sing-along. However, once you place “Mean Girls” 2024 on your shelf, you might never pick it up again. Mean Girls (2024) Vi la película con la mejor de las intenciones, pero no me terminó de convencer. Al ser un remake es lógico que habrán comparaciones y lamentablemente no hay ningún elemento en donde está versión destaque. Comenzando por la Regina George quien me pareció demasiado tosca en sus actitudes, ninguna me parecía natural y además no logré odiarla y amarla al mismo tiempo como a la de Rachel McAdams, solamente la odié. Cady en esta versión está aún peor que Regina, demasiado inconsistente, sosa y aburrida hasta cuando es disque mala. No sentí química entre Cady y Aaron, y sinceramente este Aaron me pareció patético y tonto. En cuanto a las chicas del grupo de Regina, les quisieron dar un contexto a su historia pero solo fue un intento barato que no llegó a nada. En sí nadie del elenco tuvo carisma, ni siquiera los actores que regresaron a interpretar a sus mismos personajes. El que la película sea un musical no es un problema para mí ya que los amo, pero ninguna canción logró impactarme o gustarme, hasta High School Musical tenía mejores canciones que esto. Sin contar con que algunas canciones no ayudaban a la historia y más bien estorbaban o no eran necesarias. Y por último, aunque la historia es la misma, la quisieron contar de forma diferente pero no les salió muy bien y en ocasiones la trama se sentía mal estructurada. Como positivo solo destacó que la actualización a nuestros tiempos de tecnología y redes sociales fue correcta; también las voces de las actrices son estupendas; y hubo algunas mejoras en la representación de los grupos estudiantiles, aunque en otras ocasiones si fueron muy estereotípicos como con el personaje de Janis. 🎬 MEAN GIRLS (2024) Puntuación: 7,5/10 ⭐️ Hace unos días por fin pude ver esta nueva versión de la mítica “Chicas Malas” y la verdad es que me pareció bastante entretenida y la sentí muy cercana a la película original 💅🏻 A grandes rasgos mantiene la esencia de la película de 2004, pero tiene pequeños cambios en la trama que la acercan más a la actualidad. De hecho, la historia sigue siendo entretenida y divertida, e incluso contiene algunas referencias, como la camiseta de agujeros que Regina pone de moda. Además, lo de que sea musical no le sienta nada mal y las canciones son bastante pegadizas 🎶 En cuanto a los personajes, la que más me gustó fue Janis, ya que es la más carismática y junto a Damian forman un dúo genial 🙌🏼 Sin embargo, la que se roba el show obviamente es Regina George. Ya sabemos que la abeja reina interpretada por Rachel McAdams es simplemente icónica e irremplazable 👑💋, pero en esta ocasión Reneé Rapp está a la altura y hace un muy buen trabajo 👌🏼 Aunque sí debo ponerle una pega y es que no se sintió taaan diva como la de Rachel. Seguindo a história do filme, o musical pôde tratar de forma mais lúdica o universo do drama adolescente com muitas músicas, e o filme de 2024 é uma adaptação deste musical. Basicamente um filme adaptando um musical adaptando um filme, com o roteiro da Tina Fey – responsável pela obra original de 2004. Partindo daí, precisa-se apontar o quanto é algo um tanto único da obra ter uma mesma pessoa assinando o roteiro das obras prévias. Há um certo apego com material e isso pode vir a evitar a coisa ser de fato algo novo, sendo apenas ecos da obra original. Em particular, não aprecio tanto as atuações ou então as músicas do musical da Broadway, mas acredito no mesmo ser responsável por aprofundar mais nos demais personagens fora a protagonista Cady (interpretada no filme de 2024 por Angourie Rice). I was curious to see how the new “Mean Girls” would compare to the original and well, it doesn’t… at all! This remake is very much its own thing and that’s exactly what I needed it to be. From start to finish, this film is a thrilling ride with numerous laugh out loud moments, catchy tunes and surprising cameos. Tina Fey, the creative force behind both the 2004 film and its Broadway adaption, returns to pen the script for this film and I think she does an exceptional job adapting the story for a modern audience without following it beat by beat. Most of the iconic sequences from the original film are either revamped or entirely omitted in this adaption and I actually respect that choice. I also think that the inclusion of colorful musical numbers from the Broadway show adds an extra dash of excitement to the film, setting it even further apart from the original. Another thing I like about this film is how it completely reimagines all the iconic characters from “Mean Girls” rather than creating weak imitations of them, which is usually the case with remakes. Angourie Rice’s Cady Heron is a winning protagonist that’s easy to root for and her transformation from nice to mean is far more believable and enjoyable than Lindsay’s ever was. To no one's surprise, Renee Rapp’s Regina George commands the screen every second she’s on it with her stunning vocals, dominating presence and unmatched swagger. Another standout among the young cast is Auliʻi Cravalho, who adds an irresistible charm to the previously annoying character of Janis and delivers the film's catchiest tunes. Jaquel Spivey is hilarious as the comic relief and Bebe Wood is suitably fetch as Gretchen but Avantika Vandanapu’s excessive overacting makes Karen annoying to an insufferable extent. Among the supporting cast, it’s also endearing to see Tina Fey and Tim Meadows reprise their roles as the respective teacher & principal from the original film. Ultimately, “Mean Girls” thrives because it strikes the perfect balance between paying homage to the original film, adapting the musical and carving out its own path. If you're gonna do a remake soon after the original, this is the best way to go about it.

Samantha Jayne & Arturo Perez Jr. In this remake/musical adaptation of the original movie, Mean Girls follows Cady Heron as she enters high school for the very first time and attracts the attention of the most popular girls in school, "The Plastics." Finding herself in their ranks, Cady struggles with maintaining her previous friendships and becoming as mean as the plastic clique she finds herself a part of. I was honestly pretty excited about this one. I am a fan of musicals and was aware of the Mean Girls stage play, but hadn't heard any of the songs before. I should of known there was trouble in the waters when I mistook Olivia Rodrigo's "Get Him Back" for a song in the movie. I eventually realized this (and subsequently became a bit of an Olivia Rodrigo fan), but still wanted to keep my surprises in check so I didn't listen to any of the musical's numbers. I wanted to give this movie a fair shot... ...And I was disappointed. The song numbers aren't very catchy nor are they very memorable - with the exception of like one or two. What I didn't like about these song numbers is that they felt like they just start out of nowhere. A scene will end and then fading in from black you start a song and dance number with no context or lead in. All of Regina's songs are one note and always sung in the slow sultry way when I would have liked some range. The movie serves mostly as a shot for shot remake of the original movie, which only serves to remind the viewer that the original movie is a lot better. Our lead doesn't sing the greatest and doesn't really carry the movie the way she should. The movie kind of leans on the idea that you've seen the original movie too, because a lot of things occur out of context, but if you've seen the original movie you'd understand why the characters are doing the things they are doing.

Empecemos por lo malo: sin duda lo peor fueron las actuaciones, te presentan una protagonista que no tiene gracia, tiene una actuación muy neutral, carece de emoción, de brillo, de carisma. No es la primera vez que la veo actuando y por eso me sorprendió que lo haga mal. Algo que también me molestó en cuanto a la actuación, más que nada de Reneé Rapp, fue lo mal que hacía el lipsync, la piba te está tirando una nota altísima con toda la voz y toda la emoción posible pero apenas abre la boca, sus gestos, la actuación facial no pega con lo que estamos escuchando, hasta un par de veces pareciera que su voz dice algo y sus labios dicen otra cosa. Bueno, eso me sacaba mucho de onda. Después, es la primera vez en mi vida, que yo, Flor, amante de los musicales, no soporte las canciones. Había canciones que iban y otras que por primera vez pensé 'uh loco, ya va a cantar otra vez' y ahi entendí lo que sienten las personas que miran musicales pero le molestan los musicales. Es que las canciones tampoco son buenas, las sentí muy genéricas, la única que me gustó y disfruté fue la de Halloween. En fin, el guion se sintió muy forzado, muy apresurado, se siente como un homenaje a la película del 2004 más que una adaptación del musical. Siento que esta película está pensada para la gente que vio la película original un millón de veces y no para el público general. Hay más cosas pero sino no me queda espacio para lo bueno, la puesta en escena me encantó, las coreografías, no solo de los actores, los cambios de escenario, los movimientos de cámara, se logró muy bien eso porque es muy de musical en vivo. Después, Janis, Damian y Karen se roban la película, son lo mejor de lo mejor, excelentes actuaciones, los que más entendieron a los personajes. Los cambios que hicieron en el guion me parecieron buenos, fueron buenas decisiones, me encanta como se juega con los cambios de relación de aspecto, las canciones de Regina parecen videoclips and i think that's amazing. The new Mean Girls is a very enjoyable movie, but because of some unfortunate choices, it largely pales in comparison to the original. The movie certainly has its moments. It's competently made and the humor is pretty good for the most part. I ended up really liking the inclusion of the music. The songs are catchy and the musical numbers are nicely staged, even if not particularly showstopping. My favourite songs from the soundtrack were Apex Predator, World Burn, Someone Gets Hurt and Not My Fault. The new cast is solid. #reneerapp does a great job as the new Regina George. #rachelmcadams will forever be iconic and irreplaceable, but Renée Rapp does manage to make her version of the character very likable. #angourierice is very good as Cady and #auliicravalho makes a big impression as Janice. #tinafey returns to reprise her role from the original and she's just as good as she was 20 years ago. I liked #bebewood and #avantika , but I felt like they never fully disappeared into their roles. I never saw the characters, I saw the actors pretending to be the characters. Despite the movie's pleasantness, there are problems that hurt it. The first is that this new version is way too similar to the original. It's pretty much an exact copy and when it does make changes, they are very small and pointless. The other problem is that the movie plays it way too safe. It lacks almost all the bite and edge of the original. It tries so hard to be politically correct and not to offend anyone that it becomes very bland and annoying. It's basically Mean Girls without the mean. I was also not a fan of the callbacks to the first movie. They're cute, but more often than not they feel forced and unearned. Overall, I had a good time with this version of Mean Girls. Hablemos de 'Mean Girls' (2024) de 1hr 52 min dirigida por Arturo Perez Jr. y Samantha Jayne en su debut directoral con el guión de Tina Fey, basada en el musical de Broadway del mismo nombre, que a su vez se basó en la película de 2004 de Mark Waters. No hace falta sinopsis porque si neta no ubican 'Mean Girls' vivieron debajo de una piedra o que? Este remake musical toma la historia de la clásica y excelente pelicula (hasta icónica diría yo) de 2004 mejorando ciertos puntos, haciendo un par de cambios que mayormente parecen apuntar a vender la cinta a una nueva generación y no aquellos que vieron la clásica. Reneé Rapp es una excelente Regina George que a mí gusto, queda mejor que Rachel McAdams, que que Rapp presenta más porte, más presencia, una excelente y preciosa voz, además de su evidente belleza física. Angourie Rice como Cady a diferencia de Lindsay Lohan (que hace un cameo) funciona pero tiene escenas que están horribles (una con cámara en mano horriblemente hecha) El resto de las Plastic funcionan bien, regresan tanto el director (Tim Meadows) y la profesora (Tina Fey), los que destacan aquí para mí son Jaquel Spivey junto a Auli'i Cravalho ¿Era necesario el remake? No realmente, de nuevo, esto va más para otras generaciones, con otro tipo de modas, tendencias y eso sí mucho uso de redes sociales (que es lo único que me disgusto) Ahora al ser un musical si es un tanto molesto que haya 5 min de diálogo y todo sea canción tras canción pese a la genial coreografía y excelentes voces, además la canción con la que se promocionó solo aparece al final y eso le resta. “Mean Girls” is a musical reimagining directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. I’m sure the stage musical is fine, but to spool this back up into a completely homogenized movie is an outright waste of time, money, energy, and talent. The new cast is largely pretty damn good and definitely capable of standing against the OG ensemble... if they had better material. It feels surreal to say this script is worse than the ‘04 film’s, but it somehow is despite being largely identical. The music is baaaaaad... like if “Glee” was even worse because they didn’t have pre-established hit songs to work off of. The direction doesn’t help - this is about as ramshackle as they come. There isn’t a single joke that lands here with more impact than what the film delivered 20 years ago. It’s kind of weird how this film centers Regina in all of the marketing material, and then totally sidelines her for the final act of the film, same as the original. But the producers know Renee Rapp is the bright star at the center of this universe, but can’t give her more than just a drugged up scene towards the finale? Like I said - a huge disservice to the talent on display. They never advertised this in the trailer or in any of the commercials, so I feel like people had no idea what they were getting into lol. I watched the musical when it came to town earlier this year, so I knew what to expect and they delivered.. for the most part! Most of the musical numbers were fab and some of the jams might've even found its way to my Spotify playlist lol. The cast was also quite strong with Renee Rapp, Auli'i Cravalho, and Jaquel Spivey being my highlights. BUT, Cady could've been casted much better because Angourie's vocals were sub par. Plus, I'm dumbfounded by the Aaron Samuel's casting choice because talk about a downgrade?! that's just my opinion though lol so if kids these days find Chris Briney hot, then to each their own. I also wasn't a fan of how they tried to make this more modern/mainstream by incorporating TikTokers into this because it felt too forced.
