These are Big Leaf Maple leaves I found yesterday on my property. All from the same branch and I didn’t see any others. Wild! Looks like a natural mutation that was probably similar to the mutation that started the entire genre of “Butterfly” Japanese Maples. Interesting, eh? Acer macrophyllum is the largest of all the Acer species. They commonly grow up over 70ft and can reach heights of over 150ft in perfect growing conditions. The current record holder is a specimen in Oregon is 119ft tall and has a crown spreading over 91ft. It’s Woody Plants Wednesday, nature lovers! Today we’re taking a look at Populus angustifolia, commonly known as Narrowleaf Cottonwood. This tree can be found in riparian areas at 4000 to 8000 feet elevation in western North America, from Alberta in Canada all the way south to Sonora in Mexico. It's a slender tree whose branches grow upright into a narrow pyramidal crown, reaching heights of up to 50 feet. The lance-shaped leaves are at least twice as long as they are wide, with finely toothed margins. Like the Fremont Cottonwood with which it readily hybridizes, the bark starts out smooth, pale yellow-green and becomes gray and deeply furrowed with age. Male and female flowers grow on separate trees as catkins and are wind pollinated between March and June. Its fruits are capsules enclosing multiple seeds, each with a tuft of long white hair (“cotton”) that helps with wind distribution. Abundant seeds are produced every June or July, but they live only a few weeks and need to land on wet, sandy soil in full sunlight to get established. The dense, spreading root system formed by these trees make them excellent at erosion control and stream bank stabilization. This cottonwood (genus Populus), which is a member of the willow family Saliaceae, is easily mistaken for a willow (genus Salix) due to its narrow leaves and similar habitat. Our favorite iNaturalist observation from the Mogollon Highlands this week was this Antelope milkweed in bloom, found in Sedona, AZ by user jenna40559. Milkweeds (genus Asclepias) are extremely important plants to pollinators -- check out the native bee enjoying this one's nectar! -- especially Monarch and Queen butterflies which use them as host plants. The plant bleeds a milky white sap that is toxic, and eating these plants as larva gives Monarchs and Queens their toxicity that protects them predators. Antelope milkweed gets its name from its seed pods that resemble antelope horns. It’s Woody Plants Wednesday, nature lovers! Today we’re taking a look at this beautiful native tree that is currently blooming right outside of our building – Robinia neomexicana, aka New Mexico Locust. This tree is found in the understory of conifer forests throughout the Southwest, typically growing alongside Gambel oak. New Mexico Locust grows as a shrub or tree up to 30 feet tall, and its reddish branches are well-protected with many pairs of stiff prickles. It’s a member of the pea family Fabaceae, and typical of that family, its alternate leaves are pinnately compound. Its pink flowers have banner, wings, and keel petals and grow in clusters at the ends of branches. Its fruits are legume pods containing four to eight seeds which are poisonous to humans. Like many members of Fabaceae, New Mexico Locust is an important nitrogen fixer, through the symbiotic relationship its roots form with soil bacteria. It readily sprouts from root crowns after forest fires and thus plays an important role in ecological succession, shading new Ponderosa Pine and fir seedlings from the intense sun. Its extensive root system makes it an excellent plant for erosion control. It is the larval host plant of the Funereal Duskywing and Golden-Banded Skipper butterflies. Scarlet Globmallow (𝘚𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘦𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘢) Used medicinally & ceremonially. Scarlet Globmallow was used to treat pain by chewing the plant into a poultice to cool & heal wounds (often the root of the pant) medicine for pregnant women, an infusion of the plant to ease swelling, drying the plant into a powder to dust on sores, this plant was also known to be used as lotion for skin ailments, a tonic to improve appetite, & treatment for hydrophobia. The Navajo was known to refer to this plant as “medicine plant with gummy roots”.
