‘상실’의 ‘기쁨‘이라니. 상실은 극복이나 대처의 대상이 아니었나. 상실해도 ‘괜찮다’가 아니고, 그러니까 상실해서 ‘기쁘다’니. 이 책은 순전히 제목 때문에 장바구니에 담겼다. 원제는 The Beauty of Dusk. 직역하면 황혼의 아름다움이 될텐데, 이런 제목은 매력이 없다. 여기서 'dusk'는 ‘나이듦’과 ‘흐려지는 시야’를 의미하는 중의적인 단어로 쓰였지만, ‘황혼’이라고 번역했다면 단순 ‘나이듦’만을 떠올렸을 것이다. 어쨌든 제목이 마음을 끌었다는 얘기다. 50대의 잘 나가는 뉴욕타임즈 칼럼리스트인 저자 프랭크 브루니는 보통의 어느날 아침, 한쪽 눈에 이상을 느낀다. 진단 결과는 비동맥류성 전방 허혈성 시신경병증. 쉽게 말하면, 뇌졸중으로 인해 한쪽 눈은 곧 실명할 위기에 처해있고, 나머지 한쪽 눈에도 같은 일이 일어날 확률을 안고 살아야가 한다는 것이다. 때마침 9년 된 연인은 변심하여 떠나고, 아내 먼저 보내고 홀로 남은 아버지는 알츠하이머를 앓는다. 여기까지 읽었을 때, 솔직히 실망스러웠다. ‘아, 극복하는 이야기, 회복탄령성! 클리셰군.’이라고 생각했을 때, 저자는 이렇게 적었다. p40 클리셰로 보이는가. 그렇다면 앞으로 클리셰가 가득한 배가 기다리고 있으니 각오를 단단히 했으면 한다. 아무래도 그것들이 영 거슬릴 것 같으면 배에서 뛰어내리는 편이 나을 것이다. 그러나 클리셰가 클리셰가 된 데에는, 그러니까 어디서나 사용되고 오래가는 자명한 이치가 된 데에는 그만한 이유가 있다는 것을 새롭게 깨달았다. 클리셰는 진실의 아주 가까운 친척이고, 통찰의 보급형 유사품이다. 삶이 시다 못해 쓰디쓴 레몬을 내민대도 당신은 그것으로 레모네이드를 만들 수 있다. 이것은 내가 얻은 큰 배움이었다. 언제나 이웃집 잔디가 더 푸르게 보인다는 것도, 구름의 저편은 늘 은빛으로 빛난다는 것도, 밤은 새벽이 오기 전에 가장 어둡다는 것도 비로소 깨달았다. 계속되는 클리셰는 이렇다. 저자는 비슷한 상황에 처한, 혹은 더 어려운 상황에 처한 사람들을 만나 이야기를 듣는다. 사람들이 내보이지 않는 고통 목록을 적어 광고하듯 목에 걸고 다녔으면 좋겠다고 생각한다. 사람들을 나의 불행을 타인의 더 큰 불행과 비교하며 위안을 찾기도 한다. 타인의 고통을 위로하는 마음 안에 얼마간의 안도가 섞이는 것은 대게 표현되지만 않을 뿐이다. 좀 부끄러울 수 있지만 나쁜 방법은 아니다. 저자도 절체정명의 위기 앞에서 뻔하지만 증명된 방법으로 극복을 시도한다. 다른 관점으로 바라보고, 긍정할 요소들을 찾고, 이전에 보지 못했던 것들을 바라보는 연습을 한다. 세상에 공짜가 없다고 생각하는 나는, 하나를 얻으면 하나를 내려놔야한다고 생각해왔다. 다 가질 수 없다고 생각했다. 그것이 세상의 이치라고. 의아한 것은 하나를 잃으면 다른 하나를 얻을 수도 있다는 생각은 해보지 못했다는 것이다. 다 가질 수 없는 것이 이치라면, 다 잃는 일도 없다는 것이 당연할텐데 말이다. 무엇인가 떠나간 자리는 비어있는 채로 고정되지 않는다. 사람의 몸이 그렇고, 삶이 그렇고, 인간 관계를 포함한 세상만사가 그렇다. 상실 이후의 삶이 전과 같은 순 없을 것이다. 어쩌면 그 구멍은 평생 메워지지 않을 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 살아가야 하는 삶에는 비워지는만큼 채워지는 아름다운 것들이 있다. 🎗️ #상실의기쁨#프랭크브루니#홍정인옮김#웅진지식하우스 #thebeatyofdust #FrankBruni#낭독#회복탄력성#신경가소성#완독#북스타그램#책스타그램#낭독스타그램
문제를 대하는 나의 태도를 생각해 봤다. 나는 확실한 회피형이고, 분명한 도피형이다. 상황을 읽는 기술도 문제를 회피하기 위해 다년간 쌓은 경험이 준 학습 결과다. . 그런데, 책은 문제적 상황과 마주하라고 한다. 당신이 마주한 상실은 당신을 다른 인생 길로 안내할 것이다. 마치 책은 삶의 전반전이 끝나기 십 분전, 얼마 남지 않은 전반전을 잘 마무리하고, 후반전을 준비하라고 말하는 것 같다. . 경험의 폭이 적은 나는 에세이를 읽을 때 깊은 감동을 느끼지 못한다. 아는 만큼 보이는 것처럼, 경험치 만큼 생각과 감동의 깊이도 다르다. 그런데 개인적 공감과는 별개로, 작가의 필력이 마지막 페이지까지 이끄는 책이 있다. 이 책이 그렇다. 그런의미에서 이 책을 추천하고 싶다. . 우리의 인생은 취약해 질 것이고, 점점 당연했던 것을 상실 할 것은 자명하다. 그리고 그 상실은 우리의 삶을 재배치할 것이다. 우리는 재배치된 삶에서 주어진 오늘을 살면 된다. 그것 뿐이다. . When I’m in the trouble, what did I effort to overcome the problem? After reading this book, I considered it. I was a type of person who I definitely want to evade and surely hope to hide from the trouble situation. I suppose that I‘m a shrewd person for which would be trouble situation or not. If it can be called an ability, I think I have a skill. . However, the author said that you’d better face when an ordeal hit you. And you would loss something from the ordeal, but it’s not ending and it will lead you to the other way. It’s like when you are under the soccer game, the first half will end ten minute later, and then suddenly someone tells you should end the first half on a high note, and you have to prepare for the second half. . Come to think of it, I’m not a lot of experience compare to others, so I think I’m less touching from essay books. I agree with that it will be different depth touching and thinking depend on your experience such as you can see as much as you knows. Regardless of my feeling about book, there are a book that is written by incomparable writing skill, and the force of the author’s writing style can lead the readers to the ending the book. So did this book. That’s why I recommend this for you. . We are getting weaker and weaker than now, no wonder we will loss obvious things. Frank Bruni's memoir THE BEAUTY OF DUSK is a mix of memoir and reportage set in the aftermath of a stroke that left him blind in one eye and at risk of losing his sight in the other. In some ways, this book is the inverse of Kate Bowler's EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON: AND OTHER LIES I'VE LOVED, which was a book brave enough to declare that sometimes terrible things happen to people and there is no sense or meaning to be found in any of it. And yet both books are true, I think, as Bowler's own extraordinary body of work—born out of her experience living with cancer—makes clear. Not everything happens for a reason, but—as Bruni demonstrates with his own experiences and through sharing those of others and also the science of neuroplasticity—human beings have extraordinary capacity to adapt and learn and change and grow in response to limitations and challenges. He wrote: "Late last month, it published a long article defining a new problem: More baby boomers and Gen Xers are living alone than forebears of their age did, and that apparently poses physical, psychological and financial challenges. Born in 1964, I’m the fumes of the boom. I live alone. And reading the article, I suddenly felt like some cautionary tale. Last week came another article: “Who Will Care for ‘Kinless’ Seniors?” It noted, with alarm, that “an estimated 6.6 percent of American adults aged 55 and older have no living spouse or biological children.” I’m 58. I have no spouse, no children. That makes me kinless by the article’s definition. Luckless, too, by the sound of it. I’m being tough on The Times, and I’m half-kidding. Both articles were important. They rightly expressed concern for older Americans who don’t have the resources or the kind of extended family that I do. They’re at risk. We should attend to that. But the articles nonetheless reminded me that in an era that exhorts everyone to respect the full range of human identity and expression, there can still be a whiff of stigma to living uncoupled in a household of one. There’s puzzlement over it, pity for it. Surely, you didn’t choose this. Possibly, you brought it on yourself. ... Google it up read. -- On the other hand, there is a myth in the media, especially the awful cliche-packed LGBTQ movies out of Hollywood, that everyone who's gay is a part of a big, warm, non-kin, family with a drag queen matriarch. I loved Frank Bruni’s The Beauty of Dusk so much AND I have a kid looking at colleges, so I had to pick up his other book next. ✨Memoir Monday✨ THE BEAUTY OF DUSK On Vision Lost and Found by Frank Bruni Frank Bruni is a brilliant, accomplished writer. I’ve been a fan since he was the food critic for the NYTimes years ago and wrote his previous memoir, Born Round. I was thrilled for him when he became an Op-Ed writer for the paper in 2011—he’s smart and has great insight into much more than restaurants. He then wrote a book about the mania that is the college admissions process, Where You Go is Not Who You’ll Be, which furthered my admiration. Frank returned with another memoir earlier this year, a book born of hardship. In the prime of his life and career—he had been writing for the Times for over 25 years, was a frequent guest on CNN and a professor at Duke, and was in a committed, long-term relationship—he awoke to partial loss of vision in one eye, due to a stroke that ceased blood flow to that eye. He was rendered permanently and functionally blind, with the possibility of sight loss in his other eye also hanging over him. The Beauty of Dusk is a gorgeous and moving meditation of Frank’s journey to self acceptance, optimism, and embracing what he has. Modeling perseverance and vulnerability with grace, Bruni documents his life navigating new-found disability. Family, friends and others who have endured similar challenges became lifelines as he confronted the sadness, anxiety, fear, a breakup, and his own judgment of himself, all triggered by his affliction. Aging parents were thrown into the mix and there were days overcoming his unwelcome changes felt insurmountable. But Frank began to see the world through a new lens. Rather than wallowing in his pain and radically altered circumstances, how others handled physical hardships became a source of fascination and inspiration to him. What were the gifts in changed circumstances like his? How Bruni comes to terms and transcends his loss is a magnificent exploration.
