Last night was my first visit to the recently renovated & restored august @BrooklynParamount (where from the 1930s through 1962, jazz greats Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, & Miles Davis and rock & roll/R&B pioneers Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, Dion, Bo Diddley, & The Coasters performed) for Glasgow, Scotland's indie pop standard-bearers @BellesGlasgow, who delivered a sensational show (even a shaky start to "Sleep The Clock Around" ended in rousing triumph) that honored the venue's legacy in an 18-song (and 2 impromptu request snippets) set brimming with stylistic breadth from their nearly-30-year canon, with faves to deep cuts that play as a history of baroque '60s/'70s/'80s pop influences, to the delight of the merry dancing sold-out crowd of fans aged toddler to geriatric. It was my first time seeing Belle & Sebastian since sailing with them on the majestic @BoatyWeekender ⛵ (and my, at least, 10th time since a 1998 show at The Supper Club) and lead vocalist @MossBlown is still the consummate front man, singing sensitive lyrical bon mots while sashaying across the stage and into the warm embrace of the GA punters as the band sprinkled orchestral elements (🎻🎺 cello, recorder) amongst @StevieReverb & Bobby Kildea's indie 🎸 flourishes and @SareyPoppins (🎤 🎻) & @_Chris_Geddes 🎹 synthesizers, culminating in the ritual invitation of dozens of audience dancers to the stage to envelop the band for "The Boy With the Arab Strap" (even the exceptionally gracious venue crew were dancing and smiling in the photo pit). [Live Music In The T-Dot] Belle & Sebastian @ History w/ The Weather Station (April 29, 2024) • Indie Pop / Twee Pop / Indie Rock / Chamber Pop • Breaking News: Belle & Sebastian’s return to Toronto on Monday night has dethroned Thievery Corporation as the best show I’ve seen in 2024 (so far). Details to follow.... • I’ll be the first to admit that, up to now, my enthusiasm for The Weather Station’s progression from being the folksy solo outlet of Tamara Lindeman to a fuller band endeavor, has been lukewarm, despite the critical praise. However, witnessing her awesome opening set for B&S confirmed that, much like the idiots who bemoaned Dylan for “going electric”, I too had been, erm, an idiot. The band sounded wonderful; the brass, especially, was a nice touch, and Lindeman’s voice was like magic. I am happy to have been wrong. • It had been just under 5 years since Belle & Sebastian’s last visit to Toronto, and 14 years since I had seen them myself. But wow, did they ever put on a great show! Stuart Murdoch’s banter was in top form, quipping about our city’s pervasive construction (“this city...you’re still building it”) and giving in to the perception that they’re still considered “twee” although, even his wife acknowledges that he’ll never shake that image given his penchant for Winnie the Pooh paraphernalia. (Stevie Jackson gave the best response: “If anyone ever calls me TWEE I’ll beat him. With a flower!”) • As far as the music goes, it was a great mix of new and old (“there are some people of our vintage in the audience”), with personal faves “Like Dylan In The Movies” and “The Fox In The Snow” being highlights. Of course, the audience dance-off during “The Boy With The Arab Strap / Dear Catastrophe Waitress” was a joy explosion, as always, but, this time with Murdoch strolling through the audience, chatting it up with folks in the front row, and riding a scooter. My favourite moment was the unplanned inclusion of “If You’re Feeling Sinister”, thanks to the shouts of my new Brazilian acquaintance Alex. We owe you a pint, sir! Afterwards, another enthusiastic new acquaintance, Farah, asked me, “Are they ALWAYS this good?” Yes Farah...yes, they are. •

What a privilege to see @steviereverb play with #StuartKidd and some of his extraordinarily talented @bellesglasgow band mates in a small venue. @the_loft_uk are a cornerstone band for me and last night’s performance was a sublime experience. I felt like I’d been sucked backwards through a time portal to the Rock Garden in early 80s Covent Garden. In the mid 80s, no student disco was complete without the spin of a #loftband track.
