The National Hangeul Museum's new special exhibition, "Dialect, Can't Resist!", marks the museum's 10th anniversary year by embracing the different dialects spoken across the region: "On the Korean Peninsula, these dialects can broadly be classified into six dialect zones: "Central dialect (Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Chungcheong, and western Gangwon)", "Southeastern dialect (Gyeongsang and eastern Gangwon)", "Northeastern dialect (Hamgyeong and Tongcheon in Gangwon)", "Southwestern dialect (Jeolla)", "Northwestern dialect (Pyongan and Hwanghae)", and "Jeju dialect (Jeju)". The "Korean language" in China and "Goryeo-mal" in Central Asia are also considered to be dialects of Korean within a broader context." In addition to highlighting the different regions' special linguistic characteristics through literary works and private correspondence, the exhibitions looks into the history of those dialects as well as the study of the Korean language over the last few centuries by Koreans and foreigners alike. "With the development of information and communication technologies and transportation, the blending of regions and cultures is accelerating, blurring the boundaries between dialects. Many people worry that dialects may disappear in the not-too-distant future. However, like living organisms, it is natural for languages to change their forms and sounds over time and with environmental shifts. Dialects are not 'immutable words handed down from the past' but 'vivid, living words that are active here and now.' Ryan Davis “Winter Coast” 2024 Oil on shaped canvas mounted on panel. 55 x 70 cm. “Placing the sea as a metaphor for the unknown I juxtapose the more traditional painting language with a modern twist with the manipulation of the canvas shapes and frames. My thought process behind this stems from our relationship with the rectangle. The rectangle is a symbol I see as something more than a basic geometric shape. Rectangles have become a symbol that follows us within our daily lives through mirrors, cell phones, tvs, etc.I see this as a mere redundancy that I want a break from. I have always been drawn to irregular, complex and changing environments.The canvas shapes take on images associated with the sea itself while interplaying their role within the painting and design. ARTIST NEWS: ELGER ESSER Elger Esser is currently featured in a solo-exhibition at the Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel, in France. "Elger Esser is a Franco-German artist born in 1967. He grew up in Rome and then studied at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. For 30 years, he has criss-crossed France, the coast and its regions, and composed a vast portrait of the country and its landscapes, from Cabourg to Biarritz via Giverny and Wimereux. The sites chosen by Elger Esser are landscapes full of historical and cultural remains. Desirable Fragrance Becky Cormack @photogenic_becky My project “Desirable Fragrance” looks into various perfume brands; highlighting their scents, themes and targeted audience in a commercial advertising style of photography. Looking into my two series of images portraits and still life, I have represented their products through props to show the scent as well as to compose my image. I have focused on capturing the bottles unique designs, including making the bottles stand out of towards my audience. Continuing, with my portraits, I wanted to represent how the targeted consumer may feel by wearing the perfume, such as Billie Eilish is an alternative style. It was important that I had my model looking confident in each style of perfume allowing my audience to create a feeling of power. On reflection, this project has been important towards my photography practice and skill set which I would like to do as a career. Choosing to create this project as a part of the AOP (Association of Photographer) Student Awards, lead me to be creative and free with my photography.
