Happy 53rd anniversary to this amazing prog album!! Yes's 3rd studio album - The Yes Album!! Original 1971 copy It was the band's 1st album to feature guitarist Steve Howe, who replaced Peter Banks in 1970, as well as their last to feature keyboardist Tony Kaye until 1983's 90125. The band spent mid-1970 writing and rehearsing new material at a farmhouse at Romansleigh, Devon, and the new songs were recorded at Advision Studios in London in the autumn. The album was the 1st by the band to feature all-original material. While the album retained close harmony singing, Kaye's Hammond organ, and Chris Squire's melodic bass, the new material also covered further styles including jazz piano, funk, and acoustic music. All of the band members contributed ideas, and tracks were extended in length to allow music to develop. Howe contributed a variety of guitar styles, including a Spanish laúd, and recorded the solo acoustic guitar piece "Clap", live at the Lyceum Theatre, London. The album was a critical success and a major commercial breakthrough for Yes, who had been at risk of being dropped by Atlantic due to the commercial failures of their 1st 2 albums. It reached No.4 in the UK and No.40 in the US. "I've Seen All Good People" is a suite of 2 tunes. Anderson wanted the piece to start quietly and develop, leading into a large church organ sound, before moving into the funky 2nd movement. The band had difficulty recording the initial "Your Move" section, which was resolved by making a tape loop of bass and drums, over which Howe overdubbed a Spanish laúd. At last there they are, a post about #ELP, chose the album which for me contains their absolute pinnacle, #tarkus, released 1971. Well for those who are following me for some time probably could have felt or read in between the lines. I’m not to keen on #emersonlakeandpalmer, though of course as a #progrock fan, have a great part of their discography and for some time back then was listening to it quite a lot. Interest faded quickly though and my fav albums are not the one the regular ELP fan should choose and those regarded best I don’t like so much. Maybe best proof these often called examples of prog for some reason are not quite my cup of tea. There is one big exception and that’s the epic title track of this, their 2nd album. An epic of massive proportions having all three bringing topnotch performances and which still has a lot of ‘feel’ and emotion. It’s the composition where everything by the three very talented musicians comes together. Awesome superb piece. The virtuoso main theme where #keithemerson goes all the way, the warm emotional strong voice of #greglake during the sung parts, and the spectacular drumming by #carlpalmer. Yeah shout out to him, it was his drumming on this epic that really left me in awe. Like it is one 20mins solo, though only to underscore the brilliant composition. For me Tarkus is the one track by ELP I set in between the great prog epics as made by their colleague prog heroes. Superb piece. Okay, we flip over the vinyl. Six short songs. Great variety in style. From funny to straight forward to ‘prog rock n roll’, things #thenice did now brought by a far much better band, greatly produced by #eddieofford, though in itself not so much going forward. Nice and great songs. Yet for me, must say, a bit mediocre after the grandiose Tarkus epic. Bought the album set in a single cover without, as I learned later, the original gatefold. Sadly missing the inner sleeve. As a total the album not the absolute highlight as the title track in itself is. Cos as said, that’s the one for me, and enough legitimation for the trio to have existed and bringing us this superb piece of music. An early 20 mins epic prog masterpiece. . .

On This Day 1949 (18.05.1949) Keyboard player Rick Wakeman is born in London. After making his name as a session musician, he joins Yes in 1971. Richard Christopher Wakeman (born 18 May 1949) is an English keyboardist, songwriter, producer, television and radio presenter, actor and author. He is best known for being in the progressive rock band Yes across five tenures between 1971 and 2004 and for his solo albums released in the 1970s. Born and raised in West London, Wakeman intended to be a concert pianist but quit his studies at the Royal College of Music in 1969 to become a full-time session musician. His early sessions included playing on "Space Oddity", among others, for David Bowie, and songs by Junior's Eyes, T. Rex, Elton John, and Cat Stevens. Wakeman became a member of The Strawbs in 1970 before joining Yes a year later, playing on some of their most successful albums across two stints until 1980. Wakeman began his solo career in 1973; his most successful albums are his first three: The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1973), Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1974), and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (1975), all concept albums. Steve Howe - Mood for a Day Yessongs is the first live album by the English progressive rock band Yes, released as a triple album in May 1973 on Atlantic Records. After completing their Close to the Edge Tour in April 1973, the band selected live recordings between February and December 1972 on their tours supporting Fragile (1971) and Close to the Edge (1972) for a live album release. They were then edited and remixed with their producer and live sound mixer Eddy Offord. Three tracks feature original Yes drummer Bill Bruford while the remaining tracks feature his replacement, Alan White. Yessongs received a mostly positive reception from music critics, though much of its criticism was directed at its sound quality. However, the album was a commercial success for the band, reaching number 7 on the UK Albums Chart and number 12 on the US Billboard 200. In 1998, the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling over one million copies in the United States. Released 50 years ago in Canada: ‘Yessongs’ a 3-LP live set, which was my first Yes album. I believe some of their now classic songs are done better here than in the studio: I prefer this uptempo ‘Close to the Edge’, the manic fury of the extended bass solo piece ‘The Fish’ and I always need to hear new kid on the block Alan White’s phase-shifted drum fill that kicks in the electric half of ‘All Good People’. Poor Alan had just replaced Bill Bruford who quit just as the logistics of their ambitious world tour fell into place, leaving Alan only 3 days to learn the Yes canon. And it’s not exactly 12-bar blues here, is it? Actually Bill is still heard here on three songs recorded in 1972. Yessongs has been criticized for its murky sound quality. Yes were fortunate that Eddie Offord, who meticulously engineered the studio albums that spawned all of this material was running the concert soundboard for them. But in hindsight, perhaps Eddie would have been more helpful overseeing the recording process. Over the last decade, Steven Wilson has remixed all the 1971-74 Yes studio albums, but sadly overlooked ‘Yessongs’. He did a particularly brilliant job removing the layers of sonic sludge that I didn’t realize were preventing ‘Aqualung’ from sparkling as it deserves. If the same Wilson Touch is ever applied here, it will be Prog nirvana. However, there is now a 7-LP box of alternate live takes from earlier 1972 concerts in pristine audio quality. I wonder if Yes was trying to outdo Tull’s fold out ‘Thick As a Brick’ newspaper with the quad panel Roger Dean art gallery album cover you see here? Yessongs Have to be honest here. I’m not entirely certain that today is the day. But I think it is. I noticed @rockstuffrecords was celebrating it, so that’s good enough for me. Today. Possibly. This classic live triple album turns 50. I once was asked if I’d ever bought a record just for it’s cover artwork. Yessongs was probably as close as it ever got. 5 Roger Dean classic pieces. Escape, Arrival (twice), Pathways, Awakening. Interestingly not one in-concert photo anywhere on the cover. These came in a separate tour programme style insert containing plenty of live shots from Yes’s 1972 shows. For sure this is a very cool album cover package. A true thing of beauty. And then the music. Yes at their very best. Playing live and sounding great. My personal favourite has to be Side 6. But I do enjoy playing through all 3 records and reliving that classic, creative Yes era. Although Alan White had just joined the band, I love that they left a couple of Bill Bruford tracks on the album as well. And with this summer’s Jon Anderson Close To The Edge Tour in mind. It’s good to hear all three tracks played live in the same year as the studio album had been released. I still get goosebumps Side 1, Track 1 when the excerpt from Firebird Suite kicks in. Not a bad effect from a fifty year old album. So hopefully I’m celebrating on the right date. Some good old 1984 #neoprog: the studio debut #thesentinel by Scottish band #pallas. Set in one of the most beautiful album covers ever, by #patrickwoodroffe. A concept album about a futuristic #atlantis. Sort of, as the original intent was to put their much live played complete #atlantissuite on the album. Due to pressure by their record company EMI, who were investing in a possible #prog revival and coupled them to legendary #progrock producer #eddieofford, also some shorter tracks had to be included. Thus on the original album the suite is only presented partly. The ‘92 CD rerelease has the complete suite. Well and what do we got. It’s prog indeed. Bombastic, majestic, pretentious, sentimental, glorious. It’s all there, a larger than life concept, epic sized compositions, moog soloing, slowly developing themes, even a deep speaking voice telling parts of the story to set the atmosphere in an almost overly dramatic way. On the edge of corny. And must say, in places, it works. Always get touched as in #riseandfall the voice tells about the dome sinking into the ocean and a majestic slow theme rises, above which the guitar solo starts. A cliche, though cliches have their way. It’s young male adult romantic SF fantasy. Is it a good album? Yeah I guess, as for sure it has its flaws, not all compositions work, the singing not always strong enough. It’s been done before and in a better way. Yet it has this naive charm I like so much about neoprog. Reminding me about the time I was 17 and was discovering all this prog music which became so important to me. For me the album and sympathetic band will always be linked to the first #syminfo double concert at the #paradiso Amsterdam, 1986, where together with #IQ they gave an enthusiastic show to the 500 biggest prog fans in the Netherlands. Remember vividly all singing aloud the end phrase of the Atlantis song… “All the world now join hands as one, the first time since the world has begun”, …and yeah we did! The world for a moment a perfect place in front of the legendary stage, steaming with energy, bombastically brought to live by this young Scottish band. A great night out. . . #pallasband #iqband
BOTH SIDES NOW 45RPM FEATURE: Yes "Into The Lens (I Am a Camera)"/ "Does it Really Happen?" (Atlantic Records 1980) It's no secret that 1980's "Drama" is my favorite Yes album. In many ways it points to the future sound of both Yes and the supergroup Asia (featuring two ex-Yes members from this line up Steve Howe and Geoff Downes) Now at the time it was sacrilegious to replace a lead singer in a band (common place now) so Jon Anderson's departure was met with people scratching their heads? What will Yes do?? Enter the Buggles Vocalist/bassist Trevor Horn and Downes were a duo with hip credentials as both writers and in Horn's case, producer. The new wave energy they brought to Yes is reflected on the album and sparked the rest of the guys (Howe, Chris Squire and Alan White) to their most assertive playing in years. "Into the Lens" isn't my favorite track on the album, and the single mix is extremely truncated. It does have some interesting chord changes and rhythmic interplay that typifies classic Yes, but the B side "Does it Really Happen?" Is one of Yes best songs period. An absolutely stellar bass line from Squire mixed with great hard rock guitar and very modern for the times keyboard flourishes. This song ROCKS. We'll be serving this 45 up hot on Sunday! A Better Land Brian Auger’s Express 1971 Sometimes you have a crush (musically speaking) on an artist, and then you want to get all their albums, right? And then you get one that you think it’s gonna be amazing and it will change your life, but then you listen to it and it’s like meh... well, that happened to me with this album, which I believe it was the first one under the name of Oblivion Express. At first I expected something closer to “Second Wind” or “Straight Ahead”, albums which are more influenced by the jazz rock of that time. However, “A Better Land” is more hippie-ish rock with more acoustic driven compositions, specially on the first side. So at first was a little disappointing for me, to say the least. But now after some listenings, I am starting to appreciate it more and more. Actually, I find the second side of the LP damn good! And some songs like “Trouble”, “Women Of The Seasons”, “Fill Your Head With Laughter” and the more jazzy oriented title track are solid songs. Yes, the record may go more into the layback side but if you give it a try will eventually catch you. And, I’m on that group of people who adore Brian’s playing and believe that he can’t record anything bad or mediocre. Not his best but still quite enjoyable. May the shining sun influence on my opinion? Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express 1971 To me, Brian Auger is one of those artists that never let me down. Doesn’t matter the record, his name is synonymous to good music and more importantly to excellent keyboard work. This one I believe is his second album under the name Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express, a project he put together to experiment deeper on the sounds of rock and jazz. This record has a darker aura compared to the ones that came after. Songs like “Dragon Song” or “Total Eclipse” are excellent jazz rock tracks or I should say rock jazz? The power of the riffs of Barry Dean on bass and Jim Mullen on guitar is very prominent all throughout the record. And the ambiance and soloing that Brian can produce with the Hammond and all sorts of keyboards are astonishing. In conclusion, a phenomenal work! Relayer. Released today 48 years ago. This is the album that truly kicked off my obsession, at times over-obsession, with Yes and probably with music generally. I bought the LP between Christmas and New Year 1974. It was rarely off my turntable when the tickets were out for the band’s Spring 1975 tour a few weeks later. By the time I’d seen Yes play at Newcastle’s City Hall I was completely hooked. I’ve maintained a soft spot for ‘Relayer’. Always love listening to it. Sobre las piezas en solitario de "Fragile" (1971) “Lo que teníamos era genial. 'Roundabout' era realmente buena, 'Long Distance Runaround' también funcionaba bien y 'Heart of the Sunrise' era excelente", dice Bruford. “Realmente descubrimos lo que podíamos hacer en ‘Heart of the Sunrise’ y fue absolutamente la base para lo que estaba por venir. Pero, ¿ves qué poco material teníamos? Eso es en parte porque YES tenían que estar juntos en una sala de ensayo en algún lugar para que todo funcionara y en parte porque siempre discutíamos (risas). Así que mi idea 'brillante' fue decir: 'Miren, todos, pueden tener YES para una canción'. Lo diriges, lo escribes, lo compones, lo conduces. Haz lo que quieras con los músicos. De esa forma tocaremos cuál es tu versión de YES’”. Fue una solución ingeniosa al problema, aunque no salió del todo según lo planeado, ya que Steve Howe y Wakeman optaron por producir pistas en solitario en lugar de utilizar a sus compañeros de banda. La adaptación de Wakeman de una pieza de Brahms fue una decisión de última hora cuando su solo propuesto, Handle With Care, tuvo que descartarse debido a una disputa editorial. Los contratos y las regalías también influyeron en el título de la pieza de Bill Bruford. “Relayer” 💬👉 - After Rick Wakeman’s departure, Jon Anderson (voc), Steve Howe (gtr), (keys), Chris Squire (bs) and Alan White (dr), recruited Swiss virtuoso Patrick Moraz (keys) to round up their progressive rock outfit Yes. This line-up released the band’s seventh studio album “Relayer,” co-produced by Eddie Offord, via Atlantic Records on November 28, 1974. Following the same format as “Close to the Edge,” the album contains three tracks, “The Gates of Delirium” on side one – of which the closing section, “Soon,” was issues as single –; and on side two “Sound Chaser” and “To Be Over.” - This is a second-hand copy of the initial print published by Topographic Music, distributed by Warner Bros. Music (K 50096). (The original mix is no longer available on vinyl.) Close To The Edge. What can there possibly be left to say about Close To The Edge? Consistently in every Prog fan’s top 10s surely? In 2019 Prog Magazine’s readers voted it No1 Prog album of all time. The first Yes album to feature Mr Dean’s iconic, classic Yes logo. The final Yes studio album to feature Bill Bruford’s drums. I still love playing this album, as I will today. I also love the live versions on Yessongs when Alan White had taken over on drums. At my first ever Yes concert in 1975, the title track plus And You And I were included on the setlist. The current Yes line up played all 3 tracks impeccably at the 50th anniversary UK tour back in June. I was lucky enough to be at the Newcastle City Hall show.
