Rolling Stone ranked Babel number 11 in their list of the 50 Best Albums of 2012. The album was nominated for four Grammy Awards, winning Album of the Year at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. Its 12 tracks were penned by the band (swipe right for an excerpt from “I Will Wait”). Mojo magazine found it to be “more than just a decent nu-folk album,” but also “a great pop album.” Clash called it a “rip-roaring record” with catchy hooks and “not much depth,” but “some good tunes.” Davis Inman of The A.V. #mayvinylchallenge Day 17 (Day 16 MK II) Celebrate the maker: Label focus! It's not lost on me that yesterday's prompt was meant to recall what you were listening to at age 16. At 16 I was almost exclusively listening to artists on @toothandnailrecords and Solid State. Here are a few from my collection. It started with every installment of the #SongsfromthePenaltyBox compilations that BEC, Tooth & Nail, and Solid State put out regularly. Besides word of mouth, this was the greatest way to find new music. One song was enough to get me to buy the albums for a lot of the featured artists. Then it just became a matter of looking for the latest T&N artists, because they almost couldn't miss. So many great artists were on this label in the late 90s and early 00s. @thejulianatheory was probably one of my earliest obsessions. Keen eyes may spot a pretty rare LP cover, behind Understand This is a Dream. @anberlin 's Never Take Friendship Personal is an absolute masterpiece start to finish. I jumped at the chance to grab this on vinyl when it was released. @whatismae was a local favorite from my hometown and both of these albums are chock-full of memorable tracks. I was able to see all of these bands live except @copelandband (to my great dismay) and oddly @emeryofficial, even though they occupied my #1 spot in my play queue for a while. Not all of these records were recorded or pressed by Tooth & Nail, although all were released or distributed by them originally. I have several other albums from these artists after they moved on from the Indie label to others (sometimes major ones). I love that T&N has been releasing so many of the LPs from their catalogue in recent years and I hope to add many more to my collection. Special shoutout to @aaronsprinkle who has produced a ton of the absolute best music for T&N artists over several decades, including several of these. Day 675: Milemarker - Sex Jams 7”. I’ve said it before and it bears repeating - you cannot go wrong with a record on Bloodlink. This was actually the first Milemarker material I ever heard. It was cheap in a bin of singles and it was called Sex Jams so I couldn’t resist. This 7” and the Frigid Forms Sell LP are still my favorite Milemarker records. I didn’t get the Kraftwerk reference in the design at first, it would be a few years til I got that album. Now I appreciate it. I really wish I got to see this band during this time frame.

Welp, my original choice felt a little “too all the records”, for this, so perhaps that one will appear later... and adhering to the spirit... Day 14 of the #mayvinylchallenge — long time, no spin and random This album reminds me of a bygone time for me; I’m about 99% sure I purchased it before I made my way out to NC, and I’m pretty sure because two friends of mine said “Archie, Marry Me” was one of the best songs they’d heard all year, and nearly 10 years later, I still love it. And for this write-up, it’s raining pretty good in Raleigh and it’s sure making the dreary day seem a bit better. I like this record too; it’s twee, jangly, not exactly hi-fi production, charming, carefree with hints of shoegazey goodness, and sounds like it could have come out on one of those old labels like Slumberland, but maybe the more recentish iteration. Molly Rankin, the singer, love the way she can make her voice soar, it’s not whispery, and dshares equal space with the music. Other toe-tappers; Ones Who Love You, Next of Kin. Party Police is just as good as Archie, just maybe with a different mood, and maybe a better chorus. I like it. The fast, jangly Atop a Cake is also pretty good, and Red Planet is an interesting one as it’s got more electronics and kind of breaks the mood. The Paper Kites - Evergreen I’m so happy the first two EPs from this amazing band finally got the vinyl treatment, and on a beautiful pressing nonetheless. The Woodland and Young North EPs have always reminded me of summer so it was the perfect time as well. The Woodland EP just teleports me to a place with no worries in mind and not a care in the world and it just reminds me to be happy and present in the moment and that to be grateful for all of the things that led you to where you are, no matter the good or bad. Young North has the same feelings within it, but it feels more personal in some way with its stripped and laid back sound throughout the EP. These two EPs were such a perfect way to start off The Paper Kites wonderful career and I’m so so happy to own this, especially since this is the first RSD release I’ve been excited for in years! “And my love is yours But your love’s not mine So I’ll go but we know I’ll see you down the line And we’ll hate what we’ve lost But we’ll love what we find” @thepaperkites / @nettwerkmusic

there were some great UK/Irish indie bands in this late 90s/early 2000s era of music and one of those were JJ72 from Ireland. To me they always sounded a bit strange, but in the best way possible! Day 670: Lemuria - Big Gold Adults b/w Race the Germ 7”. Clear personalized vinyl with some silver stuff in it. I had heard Race the Germ before this, it was a digital bonus track for the Ozzy 7”. Big Gold Adults, I assume, is the sequel to Little Silver Children from the Ergs split. Or maybe this came first and the song on the split was written later, but got released first? Who knows! These songs are great and the packaging is super fun. I love getting outtakes on unique releases like this. I forget if this was a limited preorder or one of the “surprise” records Lemuria did. They would hold a preorder for a record but not say what it was. And then something amazing like this would show up. I think I got my Lemuria knit hat with this too, which I still wear every winter.

#mayvinylchallenge Day 11: Best Reissue I had the great fortune to be able to finally see @thedecemberists live at the beautiful @brooklynparamount last week. In all my years listening to them, I've never had a chance to see one of their shows. They haven't really toured much lately, but they're on the road supporting a new album coming out next month. (Go join the Youth and Beauty Brigade in a city near you!) I picked up this reissue of their first LP #castawaysandcutouts at the show, which is one I've wanted for a long time. Around the time The Crane Wife came out I really wanted to buy the original pressing of this and their sophomore album, but I could never afford to do it. And then they went out of print for a while [queue the FOMO and regret]. Collectors hate #reissues of hard to find titles. Fans love them. I couldn't wait to get home from the show and spin this beautiful 180g 2020 reissue from their march table. I was tempted to grab The Tain and Her Majesty as well, but I tried to practice some self control. (And I would have had to hold them all through the whole GA/SRO show 😂.) Three absolutely monumental records were released on this day 30 years ago. The Blue Album was the first CD I ever bought. I remember I bought it the year after its release while I was on a fishing trip with my best friend and his parents in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Because it was a tiny resort town, I paid $17.99 for it in 1995 😅. I don’t think there’s a record that’s had more staying power with me than this one. I will always come back to it. I didn’t become aware of SDRE or Sense Field until a couple years later (1997) when I was a freshman in high school. I was starting to get into the local music scene, and one of the my friends gave me a CD with a bunch of emo and pop punk tracks on it. Completely opened me up to everything I listen to today. Over time, these two records have also become mainstays in my rotation. Both Jeremy Enigk and Jon Bunch are easily in the top 5 of my all time emo vocalists. Day 10 of #mayvinylchallenge - a 10/10 record As I’ve been told, this record recently had a 35th birthday, which feels pretty wild. The Stone Roses’ debut is one that is rightly celebrated. Of course you know it’s good, the praise on this album is unanimous. I never really thought about why it’s good until, well, this assignment. But what is it about this record? There’s a whole lot of songs that just build and build, and take you higher and higher; every song is exciting, and full of hooks, and even the ones with the backwards music serve their purpose. The Stone Roses record feels like it takes a whole lot of music that came before it; you have the jangly melody of The Smiths, and also the jangly psychedelic harmony of The Byrds; and it dances; maybe they heard New Order making dance music mixed with more rock music, but this album dances in a different way; it shakes and grooves, and maybe there’s some of that edge from The Rolling Stones thrown in there. This album feels like a festival vibe baked into a slab of vinyl; the sun going down, crowds of people having a good time, and the substances are good. It all comes together to make a timeless classic that somehow sounds wholly original; like you can sort of hear the influences, but no one’s done it like The Roses since; I mean, Oasis felt like they got close; but less dancey, and snottier, and good for them. And plenty of other bands came in The Roses’ wake, influenced by them that took the ‘baggy’ thing in exciting directions. And they were the best and had the best songs; I Wanna Be Adored is one of the best openers - nothing like that build-up, the full I Am The Resurrection is the only way to close this, and everything else in between; the beautiful Waterfall, the joyous She Bangs the Drums - but I myself am a huge fan of Made of Stone and the gigantic feeling This is The One. #thestoneroses #stoneroses🍋 #ianbrown #johnsquire #reni #madchester #80smusic #altrock #iwannabeadored #coloredvinyl #vinyligclub #vinyloftheday #myrecordcollection #classicalbum #janglepop #indievinyl
Day 10: On Repeat - 10/10 Perfect Record Alvvays - Blue Rev #mayvinylchallenge hosted by @jennn_erator I considered going with one of the more established “perfect” records (Kind of Blue, A Love Supreme, Illmatic, Electric Ladyland, Wish You Were Here, etc.), but thought it’d be fun to pick the most recent of what I consider a 10/10 album. Blue Rev by @alvvaysband was released in October 2022, and the last record that I consider to be perfect. I guess only time will tell if it holds up over the long haul, but so far this record is an indie pop triumph. I love their self-titled debut and Antisocialites, so Blue Rev had massive expectations. It met and exceeded them, and represented a marked evolution in their sound. There was experimentation with different subgenres and textures to keep things interesting, but at the core sounded unmistakably Alvvays. The production is dense and layered, brimming with musical ideas to chew on. The interplay of different melodies between the various instruments and lead vocals takes your ear on such a thrilling ride – with lots of space left for bad ass guitar solos. And then the lyrics are expectedly excellent – Molly demonstrates such a mastery of the English language and melodic imagination. Songs on here can be clever and hilarious on one (who can resist lyrics that rhyme “Pomeranian spinster” with “Presbyterian ministers”???) and absolutely heartbreaking on the next. In my opinion, there are no bad songs on this record – it is virtually end to end catchy bangers. And the album seems to grow on me with repeated listens. - "What's Tonight to Eternity?" by Cindy Lee (2020) Having just released a contender for album of the year a month or so ago, we go back to 2020 for an album by Patrick Flegel's Cindy Lee persona that I discovered with my headphones in, sitting in the garden at night with the twinkling lights of candles illuminating the space around me. I'm a sucker for most things dreamy and oh boy is this dreamy, like "Blue Bell Knoll" by Cocteau Twins-dreamy but slowed way down and tinged with a lo-fi resonance that gives the whole album a feeling of having woken from a dream where the memory of it has instantly become distant and distorted. Patrick/Cindy's vocals are a mirage on the hazy horizon, a siren beckoning from just beyond the fog that one can never swim to. Glass Animals - Dreamland It’s beginning to really feel like summer here so had to spin this fantastic album, plus with a new one on the way, have to start preparing for it! Dreamland got me and a lot of people through Covid with it being released about a quarter through the pandemic and diving us into this new world both literally and figuratively. Everyone I know has heard Heat Waves off this album and somehow I’m still not sick of it, it just hits me right you know? Anyway, I love this album and all of the home video interludes throughout it really making this album feel like a narrative of past and present experiences. Grifters – Crappin’ You Negative. This killer indie rock album was released in 1994 on Shangri-La Records. The Grifters was part of the Lo-Fi scene that included Guided By Voices, Sebadoh, and Pavement. I think Crappin’ You Negative is their best album. The music is dark, noisey, catchy and rocking. I bought this on CD during that era, and then picked up the vinyl much later. THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS - THE AGE OF THE UNDERSTATEMENT (2008). “The Age of the Understatement” is the debut album by English supergroup @thelastshadowpuppets released on 15th April 2008 by @dominorecordco It was written between band co-frontmen Alex Turner and Miles Kane in 2006. It was produced in Paris and London by fellow member James Ford, featuring orchestral arrangements composed by Owen Pallett, and performed by the London Metropolitan Orchestra. “The Age of the Understatement” is a stylistic deviation from the indie rock sound found in Turner and Kane’s previous work with the Arctic Monkeys and The Little Flames, respectively. It mainly features genres that include Symphonic pop, pop rock, and baroque pop. It also draws influence from French pop and film scoresof the 1960s.
