1261 Mud Slide Slim is nearly as good as its predecessor Sweet Baby James. Together these two albums are absolute classics in the early 70s, singer songwriter genre. James at the top of his game. This remastered edition from 2008 was cut from the original master tapes by Kevin Grey. You’ve heard You’ve Got A Friend a thousand times, but hearing this pressing is quite a revelation. James Taylor - Mud Slide Slim And The Blue Horizon released in April of 1971 - You've Got a Friend is the most familiar song on this album, but the rest is so good, although obscure to many non JT fans. Funny story, I bought this used a few months ago and there was still shake in the gatefold, if you know, you know.
This album was criminally slept on by me until last November. I had always toyed with idea of covering this whole album but never felt the drive to do so until a follower messaged me saying how he wore this album out in 1971. So, as a good person would (or insane) I covered the album. One thing I’m most proud of is that most of these songs were in less than three takes. With Russ Kunkel being one of my favorite drummers this was also an exercise to see if I could capture and ounce of his feel. All my records in a year part 376: James Taylor - Mud Slide Slim. James Taylor is my Mum’s absolute favourite, so consequently I have heard him a lot over the years and have a lot of affection for him and his music. This album is great - just faultless songwriting, and I love his style on guitar - clearly more than proficient, but never too flashy - he’s not one to show off, but does just what’s right to serve the song. Also includes one of his most famous songs, not written by him, but by Carole King - You’ve Got A Friend - it may be obvious, but it’s probably my favourite JT song (although oddly it was The Housemartins that first introduced me to this song!). As with a lot of albums around this time, I love how the artists cross over onto each other’s work like a big folk rock family tree - this features Carole King on a number of songs on piano, but also nice to pick out Joni Mitchell on background vocals as well. James Taylor is, as always, in fine voice.
