Look out! Look out! Pink elephants on parade! Here they come! Hippety hoppety, they're here and there, pink elephants ev'rywhere! Sorry, I take a trip back to my childhood every time I find these, and on THIS hike we found BOTH species of elephant's head. These are from Carson Pass in late August, within a few hundred yards of each other. The first is Elephant's head, Pedicularis groenlandica. Waving their little exserted stigmas like magic wands. The second is its evil sibling (see the evil looking eyes?), Little elephant's head, Pedicularis attollens, with the stigmas looking like snot on the tip of the trunk. #pedicularisgroenlandica #pedicularisattollens #IBrakeForWildflowers #wildflowers #nativeplants #wildflowerphotography #californianaturalist #californiawildflowers #californiawildflowerhikes #californianativeplants #calnatshare #carsonpasswildflowers #carsonpass #alpinecountywildflowers

Ok let’s get this party started. Starting from the Bridalveil Camp TH at @yosemitenps on July 19, heading to Turner Meadow for night 1. Kinda gray skies, and we got rained and thundered on for a couple hours. (1) In the pine forest, starting to see a tiny fraction of the plants and wildlife we’d eventually see. Oh look, Corn Lilies! Oh look, Goldenrod and Lupines! It got a bit crazy, and since then I’ve been trying to figure out what they all are. My spreadsheet has 165 entries so far. Mistakes will be made; input allowed. Spme plants I’m sure of, which is a relief to the brain. #veratrumcalifornicum #solidagoelongata (2) I’m going, oh geez, this Lupine thing is going to be a problem. All different ones than the Bay Area, and we saw at least six new ones. 😩 Gray’s Lupine I think. #lupinusgrayi (3) Whew, along Bridalveil Creek, at least I know it’s a Lily! Alpine/Sierra Tiger Lily, CA endemic. There ended up being millions to see, although in the “lower” elevations here between 7000-8000 feet a lot of flowers for all the plants were drying up. #liliumparvum (4) Oh look, butterflies- Fritillary of some sort. Only saw 5000 of these. (5) Shrooms grow big here. (6) Whoa! A Lousewort! I saw you three years ago at Mammoth! Bearded/Pine/Pinewoods Lousewort. In the Pine Woods. #pedicularissemibarbata (7) Ha! I know you, Smokey Mariposa Lily. Funny seeing them just one at a time, and only a few the entire trip, from this lowest elevation to the highest, on Buena Vista Peak. #calochortusleichtlinii (8,9) Now the rain stopped and we’re in the Burn Zone @californianativeplantsociety This went on for a few miles on the trail to Turner Meadow and beyond. There’s also a creek here, just wild. So many plants! Just a small sample with #rangerchick getting pics of Bog/Large-leaf Lupine, Common Yarrow, and the ubiquitous Fireweed. #lupinuspolyphyllus #lupinuspolyphyllusvarburkei #chamerionangustifolium #achilleamillefolium (10) We saw so many Little Elephant Heads this trip in wet meadows and along stream banks. Oh my goodness. #pedicularisattollens #pedicularisattollenssspattollens #buenavistaloop2021 #yosemitebuenavistaloop2021

Little elephant's head, Pedicularis attollens. Earlier this season I posted a picture of Big elephant's head, Elephant's head, Pedicularis groenlandica. Different shape of "ears", and the inflorescence is much hairier. Lots of these near Lake Tahoe in a high meadow, but they are just about finished for the year. #pedicularisattollens #placercountywildflowers #IBrakeForWildflowers #wildflowers #nativeplants #wildflowerphotography #californianaturalist #californiawildflowers #californiawildflowerhikes #calnatshare #californianativeplants

Elephant heads (Pedicularis attollens and Pedicularis groenlandica) and their many friends on a late July day.

This #pedicularis species, known as Baby Elephant’s Head Lousewort #pedicularisattollens, grows all over the higher elevation meadows below the volcanoes in #CentralOregon Louseworts are hemiparasitic, meaning they grow from a host plant, and can sometimes the can take on constituents of that host. Medicinally, louseworts are known for their mind-body relaxant effect. *Note: Awareness and studying of plant ID, constituents, and proper harvesting practices are needed before using plants as medicine. Also, Many louseworts are sensitive species. Some louseworts grow near toxic plants.* #bendOR #plantmedicine #nighthawknaturalistschool #beautifulwildflowers #cascadevolcanoes

Pedicularis attollens, commonly called little elephant’s head for a very obvious reason! I love seeing this mountain meadow dwelling Pedicularis! This genus is very diverse in mountainous and even arctic regions, ranging all over the northern hemisphere and all the way down to South America. Pedicularis (lousewort) is a really cool and diverse genus in the family Orobanchaceae. Most of these are root parasites of other plants, stealing water and nutrients, but not sugars from them. The flowers of a few species resemble the heads of an elephant! Here are 9 really cool Pedicularis species I found along the Pacific Crest Trail this year! 1. Pedicularis attollens (little elephant head) 2. Pedicularis contorta (coiled lousewort) 3. Pedicularis groenlandica (elephant’s head) 4. Pedicularis orinthorhynca (ducksbill lousewort) 5. Pedicularis bracteosa (towering lousewort) 6. Pedicularis densiflora (indian warrior) 7. Pedicularis racemosa (sickletop lousewort) 8. Pedicularis semibarbata (pinewoods lousewort) 9. Pedicularis howellii (Howell’s lousewort) this one has gone to seed, wish I saw it in flower! It’s rare in California too (CRPR 4.3)! #pedicularisattollens #pediculariscontorta #pedicularisgroenlandica #pedicularisorinthorhynca #pedicularisbracteosa #pedicularisdensiflora #pedicularisracemosa #pedicularissemibarbata #pedicularishowellii #pedicularis #lousewort #elephantheadlousewort #botany #plantdiversity #speciesrichness #botanist #botanizing #hiking #pct2019 #pacificcresttrail2019 #orobanchaceae #nature #wildflowers #cnps #californianativeplants #calflora #oregonnativeplants #washingtonnativeplants

Elephant Sisters: Pedicularis attollens & Pedicularis groenlandica.

9/8/2019, 2:11:53 AM

Happy #WildflowerWednesday to all my pachyderm peeps! Today's featured flower is a montane marvel known as little elephant's head (Pedicularis attollens). The zany zoological name is clearly a reference to the the drooping, ear-like petals and the spiral "trunks" of the individual flowers. Those who are familiar with Carson Pass might also recall that one of the mountains in the area is named Elephant's Back, and I found it amusing that I was photographing elephant's head beneath it. I'm sure I could have found the rest of the elephant parts in the vicinity with enough imagination, but I doubt any would be as gorgeous as this flower. . This photo is a focus-stacked composite of 46 exposures, photographed at lifesize under natural "light." I'm putting light in quotes because there really wasn't much of it once the sun had set behind Thunder Mountain. The first exposure was 1.6 seconds, and as the ambient glow diminished, I had to gradually increase the exposure time to 5 seconds - that's over 135 seconds total! Sorry, no behind-the-scenes shot this time. I still had a long night hike back through the forest, where there are (mountain) lions, and tiger (lilies), and bears, oh my! I managed to avoid them, but I did have a completely unexpected encounter earlier in the day. I was updating my photographic wildflower guide in the Carson Pass visitor center, when none other than @freethoughtspot tapped me on the shoulder and said hello! I had never met Jen in person before, but she has a kind soul and a unique photographic eye. Check out her work for a splash of color in your day! Cheers! . #smallworld #reallypatientelephant #littleelephantshead #pedicularisattollens #wildplants #nativeplants #cnps #californianativeplants #californiawildflowers  #wildflowers #wildflowerphotography #flora #floraphotography  #flowerpower  #sierrawildflowers #sierranevada #botany #botanicalphotography #magicmacroworld #carsonpass #eldoradonationalforest

I love a good common name, and this one is pretty dang good—little elephant’s head (Pedicularis attollens)! Do you see it?! Its lower two lateral petal lobes stick out like elephant ears, with two dark ‘eyes’ on the galea, with an extended beak resembling an elephant’s head with its trunk raised! S’cute. Also cool is the fact that some plants in this genus (like this one!), although having green leaves and the ability to photosynthesize and make their own food, also have modified roots called haustoria capable of stealing nutrients and water from adjacent plants making them partially parasitic (or hemiparasites). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The genus name, ‘Pedicularis’, given by Linnaeus in 1753, comes from the Latin word ‘pediculus’, meaning ‘lice’...which makes sense, since the other common name for plants in this genus is lousewort, which stems from the old unfounded belief that livestock grazing on the plant would get lice (singular: louse). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #plantfacts #Pedicularisattollens #lousewort #orobanchaceae #californianativeplants #desolationwilderness #wrightslake #eldoradonationalforest #sierranevada #botany #plants #flora #calflora #cnps #nativeplants #botanist #plantidentification #wildplants #botanizing #wilderness #plantid #plantsofinstagram #plantlife #plantsinfocus #plantphotography #plantlady #plantpeople #plantstagram #publiclands #itsallyours

From the Glen Lakes basin saddle viewpoint back to camp, #rangerchick is concerned about walking all over the meadows! You really can't avoid it, and we were careful not to make new use trails. 😇 Still all those Elephant Heads (or Little Elephant Heads? @hannahandplants think Pedicularis attollens or groenlandica), plus Lemmon's Paintbrush, #castillejalemmonii and some of those asters/daisy things we have to figure out. Oreostemma (tastes like Oreos) alpigenum? #pedicularisattollens

Pedicularis attollens. Little Elephant’s Head. In the Orbanchaceae family. Do you see the little elephant heads? This is Pedicularis groenlandica’s little sister. As cute as you are Pedicularis your ecology and habitat tells us that you’re one tough wildflower. This species loves moist mountainous habitats and is no stranger to high elevation. The elephant-like nose is part of the two lipped corolla and mimics an elephant, in fact its cuter than any elephant I know.

Contrary to folklore, baby elephants-head lousewort (Pedicularis attollens) and other louseworts do little to confer (or eradicate) infestations of lice in livestock. Old beliefs persist in nomenclature, for better or worse. #pedicularis #pedicularisattollens #wildflowers #oregoncascades #pnw #pnwonderland #exploregon #oregonexplored #latergram
