I want to shout this from the rooftops!! We need to stop labelling children. ADHD, AUTISTIC, NEUROTYPICAL, NEURODIVERSE, ANXIOUS, SLOW, TRAUMA I see time and time again parents wanting a label to make sense of whats happening for their child. Every behaviour or response is seen as being problematic. What if we paused and looked at the environment? What if we paused to understand our child’s experience? What if instead of labelling and trying to put our children into a box, we just accept their diverse personalities? What if we just accepted that Allah swt created each of us unique with specific qualities, strengths and vulnerabilities… which is exactly what makes us HUMAN. What if we focused on how we can optimise the environment & create safe spaces to help our children succeed and fulfils their God-Given purpose- what would that look like? Just imagine how powerful it can be for children to be in environments which are designed to help them thrive and excel- not be limited and out in a box. Labels, spectrums and diagnoses criteria are man-made Even the label neuro- diverse tells people you are the different one and aren’t neuro-typical… which often makes children question themselves and why they are different or not ‘normal’ When the focus shifts from labels and putting children into boxes, to adults asking the question ‘what do I have to change about myself and the environment to best support my child’… This is when we see REAL Change. For more personalised support, DM ‘MUM’ and begin your journey to becoming an Emotionally Intelligent Parent. Disclaimer: I believe getting a diagnosis is important especially so children can access the right support. This post specifically refers to the over use and misuse of labels and diagnoses which can actually be harmful. #browngirltherapy #counsellinguk #muslimmentalhealth #emotionaltrauma #childhoodtraumasurvivor #innerhealingjourney #generationalwounds #emotionalregulationskills #managingemotions #regulatingemotions #consciousparentingtools #muslimmummy #raisingbelievers #muslimparentingtips #emotionalintelligenceforkids #emotionallyintelligentparenting #parentingmentor

Here’s how you start to grow as a parent! 🌱 You practice “I feel____” statements. 🧠Why? Because when you get intuned with yourself and how you are feeling, you really start to understand on a deeper level what’s really happening when you parent. 💛Our feelings are so important and true to us. Yes, I know people say... “your feelings arent real, or you are just over reacting.” 🛑BUT! Let me tell you, your feelings are important to listen to. They are the alarm bells or the noise that happens in response to something. 🌱What you are feeling is so important to KNOW and to be CURIOUS about. So practice with me!!! 🎤COMMENT below.…… ⬇️ Tell me something you FEEL right now as a parent. 🫂🗣️ - - This is not a substitute for therapy - - #raizparenting #humansraisinghumans #crianza #crianzarespetuosa #crianzaconsciente #crianzafeliz #latinamom #latinaparenting #latinaparentcoach #latinacommunity #latinxfamilies #healingfamilytrauma #generationalhealing #gentleparenting #gentleparent #mindfulparent #mindfulparenting #consciousparenting #consciousparents #regulatedparents #regulatingemotions

A post to honor the late Sue Johnson, founder and creator of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT). Sue Johnson’s work has had an immense impact on my work as a therapist and I greatly appreciate her contribution to the field and the wisdom she brought to the world of love and attachment. “The most functional way to regulate difficult emotions in love relationships is to share them.” -Sue Johnson Sharing difficult emotions in relationships can be challenging, but it’s essential for fostering understanding, trust, and intimacy. Here are 10 tips to help you communicate your feelings effectively: 1. Self-awareness: Before sharing, take time to identify and understand your emotions. 2. Choose the Right Time and Setting: Pick a time when both you and your partner are calm and free from distractions. 3. Be Clear and Direct: Clearly express your feelings using "I" statements to avoid sounding accusatory. 4. Listen Actively: After expressing your feelings, give your partner a chance to respond without interrupting. 5. Avoid Blame and Criticism: Instead of blaming or criticizing your partner, focus on your emotions and needs. 6. Use Non-verbal Cues: Pay attention to your body language and tone of voice. 7. Seek Understanding, Not Just Agreement: The goal is not necessarily to reach a resolution or agreement but to understand each other's feelings and perspectives better. 8. Practice Empathy: Try to put yourself in your partner's shoes and understand their feelings and point of view. 9. Take Breaks if Needed: If the conversation becomes too heated or overwhelming, it's okay to take a break and revisit the discussion later when both of you are calmer. 10. Seek Professional Help if Necessary: If you find it difficult to communicate effectively or if the same issues keep arising, consider seeking the help of a couples therapist or counselor. *This Instagram page is psychoeducation, and is not intended to be psychotherapy. *This page is not monitored 24/7 and if you are in crisis, please use the 988 Crisis Line #amyfifecounseling #communication #sharingfeelings #relationshiphealing #communicatinginrelationships #suejohnson #regulatingemotions

Has your child’s behaviour changed recently? Check your stress levels. This one realisation transformed my relationship with my daughter. So you know how I am a counsellor, teacher and have a degree in Psychology… and you would think with all that knowledge and experience I would be an awesome mum- WRONG!! It wasn’t until my daughter was 2 that I started realising- and seeing- the influence I had in shaping my daughters identity and sense of self When I would be stressed or angry- even when I didn’t verbalise it- she would start misbehaving and would not listen to anything I would say. When I was sad she wouldn’t want to play and just would come and sit with me. It was only when I was calm and regulated that I would see her happy and truly thriving. Truth is how your feeling and your stress response influences your child’s core beliefs and behaviours. That is not to say you can feel angry, stressed or anxious… it just means that being in a dysregulated state should not be your norm Children need to see a relaxed, authentic and free mum which then gives them permission to be the same. The freedom to express, play and simply be without worry or anxiety When we model how we shift between states (from stressed to relax) it helps children do the same and they dont remain stuck in their stress response and end up building an identity around that… this is what co-regulation looks like. What I wish I knew when I became a mum… What you say and how you speak to your child matters. Every single word. When we get angry, upset or frustrated sometimes we will speak before thinking and say things without really thinking But child absorb every single word and internalise it until that becomes their reality and what they believe about themselves. They internalise the critical words and this becomes a part of how they then see themselves. I am a nuisance. I am unwanted. I am unlovable. I am a problem. I just make everyone else life difficult. Perhaps mum/dad would be happier if I wasn’t around…. These become their core beliefs and the script they live life by. Don’t get me wrong- boundaries and discipline are important concepts children need to learn. Its just how are these being taught- through punishment and criticism or through compassion and love? WE are mothers raising BELIEVERS and I know that isn’t always easy when you are breaking cycles and figuring things out by yourself, especially in the times we are living in. Imagine this: A young boy, let's call him Alex, who's feeling overwhelmed after a tough day at school. But instead of bottling up his emotions, he feels safe to express himself openly at home. This safe space is not a coincidence. It results from his parents' efforts to create an environment where emotions are welcomed and understood. Recognizing his distress, they sit down with him, offering comfort and understanding. They listen without judgment as Alex shares his feelings, validating his experience. Fast forward a few years, and Alex has become a confident teenager. He's adept at managing stress, navigating conflicts, and communicating his needs in his relationships. ✨As parents, we should help our children embrace their feelings irrespective of gender. 👦🧒 📣Encouraging boys to express their emotions in a healthy way and offering them comfort validates their feelings and teaches them that it's okay to experience and express emotions. This can lead to greater emotional intelligence and resilience in the long term. 💕Feeling vulnerable should never be seen as a sign of weakness in our society, especially among boys. #mentalhealth #emotionalintelligence #regulatingemotions #parentingtips #parentinganak #parentingmalaysia #firststepchildclinic

As women, as mums we are shamed and judged for being neglectful and lazy whenever we prioritise ourselves. It doesn’t matter how much you do the rest of the time, taking a break is deemed unacceptable. When you are able to slow down and prioritise your wellbeing and rest without the guilt… that is an achievement to be recognised. It is growth. It is de-conditioning. It is breaking generational cycles. If you struggle with slowing down and resting then this is for you… Even if you feel a tinge of guilt or shame, push past that discomfort and remind yourself that your children don’t want a burnt out, exhausted mum. You can only be the best for them when you feel balanced internally. Delegate and ask for help no matter the season you are- you need to prioritise your health because no one else will. Yes, on Saturdays morning, I ask the kids to get ready... for French School!!! And it's no different...Cross that out! It's much worth than Monday to Friday school's day. Because they never fail to remind me that "I am an awful mum who is making them go to school one more day than their friends" 🪷 But, I get up earlier to meditate, and I remind myself that they will complain, and I have learnt to stop replying to the complaints. It doesn't mean I never shout... There are still some mornings when I have enough of repeating for the 10th times "Drop the toy/book/tablet and out your shoes on!"... Using short sentences with clear instructions will support understanding of what needs to be done. An example might be to tell them, first gather your clothes from the floor, then put them in the laundry basket and bring it to me. If your child has a limited working memory, then shorter instructions are less likely to be displaced by other information and they are more likely to be successful carrying out the instructions. Give simple directions. If there is a big task with many steps, help your child break it down into smaller simple tasks, so it will feel less overwhelming to them and they are more likely to begin the task, rather than avoiding it. When you are afraid of being vulnerable and showing parts of yourself that you yet haven’t accepted... then controlling behaviours become your go to coping mechanism. When you don’t accept certain parts of yourself, then its highly likely that at some point you were taught that those parts of yourself are not acceptable (by society, family, friends, education, culture, community)... so you learned to hide these parts of yourself. Whether that is being loud, being creative, angry, curious, sad, being outspoken, being out of the box, being the one that challenges the stereotypes We learn to reject our femininity, our emotions, our compassion, tenderness and sensitivity as shame was attached to these traits every time we displayed them We were taught to hide parts of ourselves which are actually the real essence of who we are as women, as nurturers, as mothers. The only way towards change and to let go of the control is to first embrace the authentic you and truly accept the parts of yourself that you have rejected for too long. #emotionalresiliency #muslimcounselor #poctherapist #emotionalempowerment #emotionalresilience #emotionalintelligencetraining #emotionalintelligencematters #browngirltherapy #emotionalregulationskills #managingemotions #HealingEmotions #EmotionallyAware #EmotionalWellness #nervoussystemhealing #nervoussystemdysregulation #regulatingemotions #regulatingthenervoussystem #emotionalgrowth #emotionalliteracy

The classic quote „walking on eggshells“ captures the feeling of tiptoeing around the sensitivities of someone who is easily emotionally triggered and unable to regulate their states and emotions. If they can’t regulate their emotions, we are almost automatically drawn into doing it for them, or we become a possible trigger for emotional upheaval that needs to be controlled or manipulated. Either way, we are drawn into an unhealthy entanglement, a codependency. And if you stay in such a relationship for too long, sooner or later you will be instrumentalized as an enabler and sidekick, just as children can become the emotional cushion or supporter for their emotionally dependent parents. This is the emotional dragon, an emotional lack of self-reliance where we lack the ability to appease our emotional states on our own. It needs to be fed and cared for, protected and skillfully kept asleep so that its anger or emotional intensity and neediness, which is hard to calm down, doesn’t get triggered. If you find yourself sneaking around someone like that, make sure you know your boundaries and take care that you don’t get drawn in by keeping the necessary distance. Find out what lies at the core of this emotional lack of self reliance in the upcoming posts. #emotionaldragon #emotionalimmaturity #trigger #walkingoneggshells #narcissism #narcissisticwound #emotions #tiptoeing #emotionallysensitive #regulatingemotions #consciousness #codependency #enabler #emotionalcushion #helper #dramatriangle

Fellow Mums…Losing your cool before 10am because… 😔 The kids are in more meltdowns than you can count on both hands 😔 And between housework, running your own business and NO-TIME-FOR-YOU, you’re absolutely exhausted? Yeah I was too… and the most heartbreaking thing was? I had made a vow that I would be the change to the trauma story even BEFORE my kids were born… But instead they felt so distant and I didn’t even actually enjoy them… 😔 And then I discovered a decluttering method that not only cut my cleaning time and put my housework almost on autopilot. But also helped me go from daily yelling 👉 to peaceful, connected parent I knew I could be! And I’ve created a free video training on just how! 👇 Link in bio!

Learning About Emotions 😃 This activity supports SEL( social emotional learning) by teaching children about empathy and understanding others’ emotions. They learn to consider how different emotions may be expressed and interpreted, promoting empathy and social awareness. Activity about emotions fosters a positive learning environment where children feel safe to explore and express their feelings. It promotes a culture of emotional literacy and openness to discussing emotions, which supports overall wellbeing. #regulatingemotions #learningmadefun #papilioryde

The terrible twos. Toddler tantrums. Meltdowns. These words have become associated with parenting children as they grow past what is normally considered “infancy” and become more exploratory and interactive. But have we ever stopped to consider how hard being a toddler is? How big, stimulating, scary, painful, and confusing the world is for such a small human? Breastfeeding and cosleeping are designed to make this transition smoother. A “tantrum” is often just a sign of overwhelm and disregulation. The oxytocin and serotonin release brought on by breastfeeding immediately calms and soothes a child who is struggling. This miraculous solution doesn’t just end when a child turns one. #extendedbreastfeeding #ecologicalbreastfeeding #naturalparenting #parentlikeamother #cosleeping #breastfeeding #toddlerparenting #tantrums #regulatingemotions

All emotions are important and valid!! Whether they’re “good” or “bad”, emotions can inform us of so much! So before we start labeling and trying to get rid of them, maybe we can approach them with curiosity instead!

They knew their conversation would be difficult, but its intensity caught them off guard. They were overwhelmed, frustrated and on the brink of tears, blaming each other for not understanding their perspective. Instead of reaching a middle ground, they were sad and felt isolated and disappointed. * During our conversation, my client realised this was a recurring pattern in her family. She felt the same about her mother and was now repeating the same situation with her daughter. “I want to change this”, she declared. At the beginning of our conversation, she expressed her feelings as sadness and anger. As we dug deeper into the details, we used Dr. Gloria Willcox’s Feelings Wheel to articulate more precise wording to describe the situation. In my experience, sometimes, overwhelming emotions may be triggered by past experiences that have kept you in unhealthy, negative patterns. When these emotions resurface, it is a great opportunity to rise above them, make peace with the past, and heal those wounds. However, healing takes time and a process that can’t be rushed, particularly if we haven’t learned to deal with our emotions in a healthy way. Here are some steps you can take to start your journey towards emotional healing: 🔹 Make a conscious decision to slow down and spend time with yourself, allowing your emotions to surface and be acknowledged. 🔹 Identify and name your emotions correctly,  going deeper than general words such as “okay,” “sad,” “happy,” “bad,” or “angry.” This process can bring a sense of relief, as it allows you to understand and acknowledge your emotions, putting you in control of your emotional journey. 🔹 Reach out, connect and seek support from others. You may realise you’re not alone in your journey. Remember, healing is a shared experience; part of the process is learning to open your heart to others. By taking these actions, you can start developing emotional intelligence. You’ll open up new avenues for growth and awareness. As you start integrating with your emotions, you’ll also be able to understand others and their emotions better, fostering deeper connections.

Understanding self-regulation is vital for navigating life's ups and downs and handling strong feelings. When teaching kids about self-regulation, it's key to start with co-regulation – supporting them through their emotions. For little ones, this might mean using a soothing voice, comforting expressions, or giving hugs. Kids feel emotions just like adults do. By practicing co-regulation, adults can model how to manage big feelings, until children are able to cope independently. We all need help sometimes! Got questions about co-regulation? Feel free to ask in the comments! We're here to help. #EmotionalDevelopment #ParentingTips #CoRegulation #SelfRegulation #RegulatingEmotions #BigEmotions #Parenting #UpperCanadaChildCare #Childcare #EarlyChildhoodEducation

FOLLOW for realistic parenting tips! If I had a catchphrase I think it would be… “How are parents supposed to just know stuff?” Like seriously, when I first rocked up in a classroom I’d had three years of training and other teachers holding my hands. Even then, I had people constantly checking I was doing it right and I only actually had those children for 39 weeks of the year, hardly a lifetime. And yet we expect parents just to take their newborn home and know how to deal with their tantrums 18 months later. Or be clued up on how to help them navigate friendship conflicts. Many parents, understandably, revert to the experience they had as a child. That is, until they realise that isolating a child whilst they’re upset doesn’t stop the behaviour happening the next time. It is okay not to know. We all need a little help in life sometimes. If you are a parent who wants to understand your child better, why they do what they do and how best to respond then hey, I’m Emma and I’ve got a real treat for you… This week I am opening up the first spaces for my live well-being webinar. This paragraph provides the context for the chapter which suggests that the advancement in technology, particularly phone based technology may deprive children of essential experiences and interactions that are vital for their cognitive, emotional and social development. It highlights the need for a balanced approach to technology use, ensuring that children have ample opportunities for free play, attunement and social learning in their formative years. My question is (and I hope that the next chapter will shed light on this) whether there is a direct correlation between lack of play and increased screen time on children's development? I'll be interested to read on... Do you agree? What do you think?
